Abstract:A novel self-healing zwitterionic hydrogel was, for the first time, designed and prepared by integrating 2-ureido-4[1H] pyrimidinone (UPy) units into the macromolecular chains of a zwitterionic polymer. The prepared UPy-containing zwitterionic hydrogel can autonomously repair occurring incisions or cracks within 1 min at room temperature without the need for any stimulus. The ultra-fast self-healing zwitterionic hydrogel provides a new pathway for constructing smart materials for both experimental research and industrial production. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Super-tough and rapidly self-recoverable multi-bond network hydrogels facilitated by 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidone dimers

Abstract:Multi-bond network (MBN) hydrogels contain hierarchical dynamic bonds with different bond association energy as energy dissipation units, enabling super-tough mechanical properties. In this work, we copolymerize a protonated 2-ureido-4[1 H]-pyrimidone (UPy)-contained monomer with acrylic acid in HCl solution. After removing excess HCl, UPy motifs are deprotonated and from dimers, thus generating an UPy-contained MBN hydrogel. The obtained MBN hydrogels (75 wt% water content) exhibit super-tough mechanical properties (0.39 MPa to 2.51 MPa tensile strength), with tremendous amount of energy (1.68 MJ/m3 to 11.1 MJ/m3) dissipated by the dissociation of UPy dimers. The introduction of ionic bonds can further improve the mechanical properties. Moreover, owing to their dynamic nature, both UPy dimers and ionic bonds can re-associate after being dissociated, resulting in excellent self-recovery ability (around 90% recovery efficiency within only 1 h). The excellent self-recovery ability mainly originates from the re-association of UPy dimers based on the high dimerization constant of UPy motifs

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels have been studied by many researchers via multiple cross-linking approaches including physical and chemical interactions. It is an interesting project in multifunctional hydrogel exploration that a water soluble polymer matrix is cross-linked by combining the ionic coordination and the multiple hydrogen bonds to fabricate self-healing hydrogels with injectable property. This study introduces a general procedure of preparing the hydrogels (termed gelatin-UPy-Fe) cross-linked by both ionic coordination of Fe3+ and carboxyl group from the gelatin and the quadruple hydrogen bonding interaction from the ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) dimers. The gelatin-UPy-Fe hydrogels possess an excellent self-healing property. The effects of the ionic coordination of Fe3+ and quadruple hydrogen bonding of UPy on the formation and mechanical behavior of the prepared hydrogels are investigated. In vitro drug release of the gelatin-UPy-Fe hydrogels is also observed, giving an intriguing glimpse into possible biological applications.

Abstract:Injectable polymeric hydrogels with self-healing property are extremely appealing in biomedical applications for the reason that they could be transplanted via direct injection, which causes minimal invasion to human body. This work presents a novel injectable hydrogel based on strong interaction of quadruple hydrogen bonding from ureido pyrimidinone ( UPy) moieties. A new monomer ureido pyrimidinone-diisocyanate-2-hydroxyethyl-methylene acrylic ester ( named UPy-NMA) carrying UPy moiety is synthesized for the first time and copolymerized with acrylamide to prepare hydrogel copolymer ( PAU). The hydrogel is prepared by dissolving corresponding copolymer into deionized water under certain conditions. Mechanical property of prepared hydrogel is measured by rheometer and the results show that the developed hydrogel display excellent self-healing ability as well as outstanding injectable property. In addition, adequate pore size of hydrogels from scanning electron microscopy also hints that the fabricated hydrogel can provide an intriguing glimpse for potential applications of tissue engineering.

Abstract:The development of hydrogels possessing both excellent self-healing and mechanical properties in hydrogel science due to their tight relationship with the many potential application scopes is of great significance. Herein, a novel class of polyurethane (PU) hydrogels with intermolecular quadruple hydrogen-bonding interactions were designed and fabricated by the copolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate end-capped urethane ether prepolymer (PU-PEGMA) with 2-(3-(6-methyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-yl)ureido)ethyl methacrylate (SCMHBMA) bearing the 2-ureido-4-pyrimidone (UPy) unit. The effects of the SCMHBMA content on the self-healing behaviors and mechanical properties of the PU hydrogels were investigated. The results indicate that the fabricated PU hydrogels can autonomously and rapidly repair occurring incisions or cracks at ambient temperature without the need for any stimulus and possess high deformability under both tensile and compressive stress and strong recoverability upon removal of stress, thus exhibiting outstanding self-healing, elasticity, robustness and toughness. The presence of UPy units in PU macromolecular chains is a decisive factor endowing the PU hydrogels with these characteristics.

Abstract:The increasing preference for minimally invasive surgery requires novel soft materials that are injectable, with rapid self-healing abilities, and biocompatible. Here, by utilizing the synergetic effect of hydrophobic interaction and quadruple hydrogen bonding, an injectable supramolecular hydrogel with excellent self-healing ability was synthesized. A unique ABA triblock copolymer was designed containing a central poly(ethylene oxide) block and terminal poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) block, with ureido pyrimidinone (UPy) moieties randomly incorporated (termed MA-UPy-PEO-UPy-MA). The PMMA block could offer a hydrophobic microenvironment for UPy moieties in water and thus boost the corresponding quadruple hydrogen bonding interaction of Upy–Upy dimers. Owing to the synergetic effect of hydrophobicity and quadruple hydrogen bonding interaction, the obtained MA-UPy-PEO-UPy-MA hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing properties, and injectable capability, as well as superior mechanical strength, and therefore, it holds great promise in tissue engineering applications, including in cell support and drug release.

Abstract:Hydrophobic stearyl methacrylate (C18) was captured into sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles and self-assembled nanoparticles of an amphiphilic polyurethane macromonomer PU-HEMA were prepared, and they were used as a physical crosslinker and a multifunctional covalent crosslinker, respectively. A reaction system containing acrylamide (AM), the C18 in the micelles and the self-assembled PU-HEMA nanoparticles was designed for constructing chemically and physically double-crosslinked network (CPDN) hydrogels. The prepared CPDN hydrogels have a tensile elongation at break of at least 1400% and can rapidly and fully recover their original shapes in compression experiments, exhibiting superior stretchability and resilience. In addition, the CPDN hydrogels possess a remarkable self-healing behavior and strong self-healing ability even at ambient temperature without the need for any stimulus or healing agent. The novel strategy developed in this study to construct highly stretchable, resilient and self-healing polymer hydrogels is simple yet extremely versatile, thereby opening up a new avenue for the construction of desired functional CPDN hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:Constructing dual or multiple noncovalent crosslinks is highly effective to improve the mechanical and stimuli-responsive properties of supramolecular physical hydrogels, due to the synergistic effects of different noncovalent bonds. Herein, a series of tough physical hydrogels are prepared by solution casting and subsequently swelling the films of poly(ureidopyrimidone methacrylate-co-stearyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid). The hydrophobic interactions between crystallizable alkyl chains and the quadruple hydrogen bonds between ureidopyrimidone (UPy) motifs serve as the dual crosslinks of hydrogels. Synergistic effects between the hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds render the hydrogels excellent mechanical properties, with tensile breaking stress up to 4.6 MPa and breaking strain up to 680%. The UPy motifs promote the crystallization of alkyl chains and the hydrophobic alkyl chains also stabilize UPy-UPy hydrogen bonding. The resultant hydrogels are responsive to multiple external stimuli, such as temperature, pH, and ion; therefore, they show the thermal-induced dual and metal ion-induced triple shape memory behaviors.

Abstract:Conventional wound healing materials suffer from low efficiency, poor mechanical strength, and nontunable properties. Responsive hydrogels are appealing candidates for tissue engineering. Herein, we developed a double-cross-linked hydrogel system composed of hyperbranched PEG-based polymer, comprising pre-cross-linked acetal structure and numerous terminal acrylate groups, which can form hydrogels in situ and can be further strengthened by UV irradiation. The hyperbranched glycidyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate polymers (HB-GMA-PEGs) were first synthesized via in situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (DE-ATRP). A series of pre-cross-linked materials were achieved after postfunctionalization. The material can absorb a high amount of water to form hydrogels, and the gel stiffness was evaluated in detail before and after UV irradiation. The in vitro cytotoxicity experiments were conducted with the resulting materials and have demonstrated their good biocompatibility. The results indicate that this type of hydrogel with high water uptake capacity has appealing potential as a responsive biomaterial for wound closure.
Self-healing polymers with PEG oligomer side chains based on multiple H-bonding and adhesion properties

Abstract:In an attempt to prepare polymers able to function as self-healing materials, a quadruple hydrogen-bonding ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) moiety was introduced to polymer systems. Low crosslinking materials based on hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) containing 10% of UPy moieties were synthesized, and their thermal and rheological properties were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and a rotational rheometer. The hydroxyethyl group and a PEG oligomer with high molecular polarity as side chains provided high surface energies and adhesion properties. The fastest self-healing of these polymer films can be achieved within 20 min. The adhesion strength tests via the tensile mode revealed the potential of these self-healing polymers in application as adhesives.

Abstract:We report here a supramolecular hydrogel displaying a wide array of dynamic desirable properties. The key is using an ABA triblock copolymer containing a central poly(ethylene oxide) block and terminal poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNI-PAm) block with ureido pyrimidinone (UPy) moieties randomly incorporated. Rapid hydrogelation is triggered upon increasing temperature above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the supramolecular copolymer, where PNIPAm segments dehydrate and assemble into micelles, which subsequently provide hydrophobic microenvironments promoting UPy dimerization to grab polymer chains, thus forming hydrogen-bonded cross-linking points. The supramolecular hydrogels demonstrate fascinating shear-thinning, self-healable, thermo-reversible, and injectable properties, which allow withstanding repeated deformations and 3D construction of complex objects. Mesenchymal stem cells mixed with the hydrogel and injected through needles remain highly viable (>90%) during the encapsulation and delivery process. With these attractive dynamic physical properties, the supramolecular hydrogel holds great promise to support cell or drug therapies.

Abstract:The research on self-healing polymers has been a hot topic. The encapsulated-monomer/catalyst, supramolecular self-assembly and reversible or dynamic covalent bond formation are the prevailingly adopted strategies. The alternative of irreversible covalent bond formation is, however, to be further developed. In this contribution, self-healing hyperbranched poly(aroyltriazole)s of PI and PII sharing such mechanism were developed. The polymers were synthesized by our developed metal-free click polymerizations of bis(aroylacetylene)s and triazide. They are processible and have excellent film-forming ability. High quality homogeneous films and sticks free from defects could be obtained by casting. The scratched films could be self-repaired upon general heating. The cut films and sticks could be healed by stacking or pressing the halves together at elevated temperature. Thus, these hyperbranched polymers could find broad applications in diverse areas and our design concept for self-healing materials should be generally applicable to other hyperbranched polymers with reactive groups on their peripheries.

Abstract:Abstract First of all, we will provide a brief background on the self-healing hydrogels we produced which are suitable for the complex environment of nature. In this paper, disulfide bonds and acylhydrazone bonds can be combined in SH-WPU and hydrogen bonds existed in PAMAM. And the hydrogel can achieve self-healing under acid, alkaline, neutral or light environment.Self-healing for 1 h, 24 h and 48 h, the self-healing efficiency is 31.58%, 49.84% and 87.35% respectively. This effect achieved the desired effect and the repair effect is more obvious than previous research results. The hydrogels have potential applications in the field of biomaterials.

Abstract:Hydrogels are polymeric materials that have a relatively high capacity for holding water. Recently, a double network (DN) technique was developed to fabricate hydrogels with a toughness comparable to rubber. The mechanical properties of DN hydrogels may be attributed to the brittle sacrificial bonding network of one hydrogel, facilitating stress dispersion, combined with ductile polymer chains of a second hydrogel. Herein, we report a novel class of tunable DN hydrogels composed of a polyurethane hydrogel and a stronger, dipole-dipole and H-bonding interaction reinforced (DHIR) hydrogel. Compared to conventional DN hydrogels, these materials show remarkable improvements in mechanical recovery, modulus, and yielding, with excellent self-healing and self-gluing properties. In addition, the new DN hydrogels exhibit excellent tensile and compression strengths and possess shape-memory properties, which make them promising for applications in engineering, biomedicine, and other domains where load bearing is required.

Abstract:The preparation of polymers with high self-healing ability is conducive to environmental protection and resource conservation. In the present work, two kinds of polyurethane (PU) elastomers were prepared: the one containing flexible end blocks (polypropylene glycol) and the other containing flexible end blocks and 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) groups that can form reversible quadruple hydrogen bonds. Both of the two PU elastomers have self-healing ability. At low temperatures the PU without UPy groups exhibits stronger self-healing ability, while at high temperatures the PU with UPy groups has better self-healing function. The difference can be attributed to the combined effect of segmental mobility and reversible network strength. Based on molecular simulations, we further observed that the self-healing behaviors are affected by four factors: healing temperature, reversible interaction strength, reversible interaction site density and segment diffusion ability.

Abstract:The novel self-healable waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) with the synergistic reversible units of aliphatic disulfide bonds and quadruple hydrogen bonding have been successfully prepared. The ureidopyrimidone (UPy) functional motifs were introduced into polymer backbones of polyurethane, where also placed the reversible disulfide bonds. The quadruple hydrogen bonds of UPy groups endowed the material a strong physical cross-linking network, which provided a superior Young's moduli of 140 MPa. The features of dual dynamic structure could also produce a relatively low active energy of 36.1 kJ/mol, resulting in a good self-repairing efficiency of 94 % under a mild condition. Furthermore, the influence of self-healing time and different repairing temperature on the healed performance was also systematically investigated. In order to describe the self-healing progress of multiple dynamic units, a physical model was used to study the evolution of self-repairing efficiency with variable healing time, indicating that quadruple H-bonding and disulfide bonds predominantly supported time dependent reconstruction of physically crosslinking network to recover the original mechanical property.

Abstract:Multi-bond network (MBN) which contains a single network with hierarchical cross-links is a suggested way to fabricate robust hydrogels. In order to reveal the roles of different cross-links with hierarchical bond energy in the MBN, here we fabricate poly(acrylic acid) physical hydrogels with dual bond network composed of ionic cross-links between carboxyl-Fe3+ interactions and hydrogen bonds, and compare these dually cross-linked hydrogels with singly and ternarily cross-linked hydrogels. Simple models are employed to predict the tensile property, and the results confirm that the multi-bond network with hierarchical distribution in the bond energy of cross-links endows hydrogel with effective energy-dissipating mechanism. Moreover, the dually cross-linked MBN gels exhibit excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 500 kPa, elongation at break ~ 2400%) and complete self-healing after being kept at 50 °C for 48 h. The factors on promoting self-healing are deeply explored and the dynamic multi-bonds are regarded to trigger the self-healing along with the mutual diffusion of long polymer chains and ferric ions.

Abstract:While it is challenging to simultaneously achieve both high mechanical performance and self-healing ability within one polymer hydrogel network, we, herein, synthesized a novel class of hydrogels based on a combination of chemical and dual non-covalent crosslinks via micellar polymerization of 3-isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl isocyanate, end-capped by 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (IPDI-HEMA), with acrylamide (AM). The prepared hydrogels were demonstrated to possess a tensile elongation at a break of at least 1900%, a fracture energy of 138.4 kJ m(-3), and remarkable self-healing behaviors (e.g., a strong self-healing ability achieved at ambient temperature without the need for any stimulus or healing agent). The multiple crosslinks developed in this study for one polymer hydrogel network are significant steps to construct the desired functional hydrogels with excellent self-healing and mechanical properties.

Abstract:In this work, diamine chain extenders containing disulfide bonds are reacted with triisocyanates to yield dynamic chemical cross-links based on exchangeable disulfide bonds. The polyurea system with dynamic bonding shows drastic decline of storage modulus and very short relaxation times above 150 degrees C so that this polymer exhibits typical dynamic properties, e.g. self-healing, recycling and hysteresis loop recovery. The introduction of disulfide bonds dominates the thermal stimulated dynamic properties, since the control samples without disulfide bonds have longer relaxation times even at high temperatures. Interestingly, presence of disulfide bonds leads to the decline of hydrogen bonding strength which can result in their easier dissociation and subsequently easier topological network rearrangement. In addition, almost complete reversibility of the hydrogen bonding is observed from temperature-dependent Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, which reveals the important influence of hydrogen bonding on dynamic properties. Thus, Hydrogen bonding dissociation is an indirect reason of dynamic properties, while exchange reaction of disulfide bonds is the primary cause. The results may deepen our understanding of the role of hydrogen bonding in the dynamic materials. In addition, the available commercial raw component, operational feasibility and simplicity constitute a great advantage of the so-prepared dynamic polyurea system, i.e. an effective step to implementation of industrial applications and recycle the nonbiodegradable crosslinked polyureas.
