Abstract:Objective To assess short-term trends and the need to monitor intraocular pressure (IOP) changes immediately after intraocular injection of bevacizumab for retinal neovasularization disease. Methods A total of 18 eyes of 13 consecutive patients including 10 cases of neovasular aged-related macular degeneration (12 eyes), 3 cases of diabetic retinopathy (6 eyes) diseases received a single bevacizumab intravitreal injection of 1.25mg at 0th week, 6th week and 12th week. Intraocular pressures were measured before injection, immediately after injection at the time of 5min, 30min, 1h and 2h.Results Take 0 week as an example, the mean intraocular pressure was increased remarkably at the follow-up time of 5 min, 30min, 1h, [(18.7±5.4) nan Hg, (18.1±5.3) mmHg, (17.3±5.4) mmHg] compared with those before injection [(14.6±4.1) mmHg, t values were 2.81, 3.45, 2.63 respectively, P<0.05].However, the mean intraocular pressure at 2h (15.6±5.8) mmHg shows no significant difference comparing with the value before injection (t=0.15, P>0.5).During a total of 48 injections, 41.7% IOP value at 5min is higher than the normal value (IOP>21mmHg), and the percentage decreased to 22.9% at 30min.Nevertheless, 85.4%, 91.7% of IOP value returns back to normal at lh, 2h respectively. Conclusions Elevations in IOP immediately (5min) after intravitreal injections are common, but are transient during the treatment of intravitreal injections of bevacizumab for retinal neovasularizafion disease which indicates that 2h could be taken as the monitoring short term IOP time point for the out-patients.
