Abstract:At present, researchers all over the world focus on the methods to prevent and cure osteoporosis. Many reports have shown that bovine milk and its basic proteins, and bovine colostrums (BC) and their extracts have positive effects on bone growth of human beings or experimental rats, such as increasing bone mineral density (BMD) and promoting calcium absorption. However, to our best knowledge, the effects of acid proteins from BC (BCAP) on bone properties have not been reported, and the effect on the potential hazard on blood lipids of rats has not been reported. This study investigated the effect of BCAP on bone loss in aged ovariectomized (OVX) rats and the hemobiochemistry parameters (HP) in serum. Forty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats of clean grade were ovariectomized and another 12 rats received a sham operation. The OVX rats were randomly separated into four groups, i.e. OVX control, OVX low dose (0.04 g·d−1), OVX medium dose (0.20 g·d−1), and OVX high dose (0.40 g·d−1). BCAP were applied in rat diet for 12 weeks and the rats were gavaged once a day. The effects of BCAP on HP, calcium content (CC), and BMD of femur were determined using biochemical analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results showed that BCAP could increase the femur weight/length. CC of femurs in rats with BCAP were significantly higher than those of shamoperated group and model control group. BCAP increased the BMD of femur. However, BCAP at a low dosage exhibited higher activity than that at a medium or high dosage. BCAP had no particular effects on the HP of rats. It is concluded that BCAP at dose < 0.04 g·d−1 can prevent osteoporosis caused by bone loss due to estrogen reduction in OVX rats, and BCAP (0.04–0.40 g·d−1) has no potential hazard on blood lipids of rats under present experimental condition.

Abstract:Scope: Milk basic proteins and bovine colostrum extracts have preventive effects on osteoporosis. However, the effects of bovine colostrum acidic proteins (BCAP) on properties of bone have not been reported. This study investigated the effect of BCAP on the prevention of bone loss in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Methods and results: Forty-eight 3-month old female Sprague-Dawley rats were OVX and another 12 rats underwent a sham operation (Sham). The OVX rats were randomly separated into four groups, i.e. OVX control, OVX plus 2 mg/day BCAP, OVX plus 10 mg/day BCAP, and OVX plus 50 mg/day BCAP, and were gavaged once per day for 12 wk. The effects on bone mineral content, bone mineral density, microarchitecture and biomechanical properties were determined. The bioactive ingredients in BCAP were isolated and identified. Results showed that BCAP increased the bone mineral content and bone mineral density of the femur in a dose-dependent manner. Scanning electron microscope observation and mechanical testing further confirmed the positive effects of BCAP. These positive effects attribute to the fact that osteopontin, lactoferrin, epidermal growth factor and insulin-like growth factor-2 are the dominant proteins in BCAP. Conclusions: BCAP (2-50 mg/day) could prevent osteoporosis caused by bone loss in OVX rats.

Abstract:Colostrum basic protein (CBP) is a trace protein extracted from bovine colostrum. Previous studies have shown that CBP can promote bone cell differentiation and increase bone density. However, the mechanism by which CBP promotes bone activity remains unclear. This study investigated the mechanism of the effect of CBP on bone growth in mice following dietary supplementation of CBP at doses that included 0.015%, 0.15%, 1.5%, and 5%. Compared with mice fed a normal diet, feeding 5% CBP significantly enhanced bone rigidity and improved the microstructure of bone trabeculae. Five-percent CBP intake triggered significant positive regulation of calcium metabolism in the direction of bone calcium accumulation. The expression levels of paracellular calcium transport proteins CLDN2 and CLDN12 were upregulated nearly 1.5-fold by 5% CBP. We conclude that CBP promotes calcium absorption in mice by upregulating the expression of the calcium-transporting paracellular proteins CLND2 and CLND12, thereby increasing bone density and promoting bone growth. Overall, CBP contributes to bone growth by affecting calcium metabolism.

Bovine Colostrum Supplementation Improves Bone Metabolism in an Osteoporosis-Induced Animal Model

Abstract:Osteoporosis is characterized by bone loss. The present study aims to investigate the effects of bovine colostrum (BC) on bone metabolism using ovariectomized (OVX) and orchidectomized (ORX) rat models. Twenty-seven-week-old Wistar Han rats were randomly assigned as: (1) placebo control, (2) BC supplementation dose 1 (BC1: 0.5 g/day/OVX, 1 g/day/ORX), (3) BC supplementation dose 2 (BC2: 1 g/day/OVX, 1.5 g/day/ORX) and (4) BC supplementation dose 3 (BC3: 1.5 g/day/OVX, 2 g/day/ORX). Bone microarchitecture, strength, gene expression of VEGFA, FGF2, RANKL, RANK and OPG, and bone resorption/formation markers were assessed after four months of BC supplementation. Compared to the placebo, OVX rats in the BC1 group exhibited significantly higher cortical bone mineral content and trabecular bone mineral content (p < 0.01), while OVX rats in the BC3 group showed significantly higher trabecular bone mineral content (p < 0.05). ORX rats receiving BC dose 2 demonstrated significantly higher levels of trabecular bone mineral content (p < 0.05). Serum osteocalcin in the ORX was pointedly higher in all BC supplementation groups than the placebo (BC1: p < 0.05; BC2, BC3: p < 0.001). Higher doses of BC induced significantly higher relative mRNA expression of OPG, VEGFA, FGF2 and RANKL (p < 0.05). BC supplementation improves bone metabolism of OVX and ORX rats, which might be associated with the activation of the VEGFA, FGF2 and RANKL/RANK/OPG pathways.

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of milk basic protein (MBP)'s on bone mineral density (BMD) and hemobiochemical indexes in normal and ovariectomized (ovx) rats.METHODS48 female Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomized and another 12 rats received a sham operation (sham). The ovx rats were randomly separated into 4 groups: ovx control, ovx low-does, ovx media dose, and ovx high-dose while 44 normal SD female rats into 4 groups: normal control, normal low-dose, normal media-dose, and normal high-dose. MBP at 10, 20 and 30 mg/(kg x d) were applied in rat diet for continuous 90 days. BMD (at proximal, middle of diaphysis, and distal end) and bone mineral content (BMC) was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiomery. In addition, serum total protein (TP), total cholesterol (CHO), glucose (GLU) were determined.RESULTSThe bone density and mineral composition at distant end of femur in low-dosage BMP group were significantly higher than those in normal control group, while no significant change of bone density was observed with MBP treatment in ovx groups. Total serum protein level and albumin level were significantly higher in MBP treatment groups than those in normal control group.CONCLUSIONMBP at 10 mg/kg bw significantly elevated femoral distant-end bone density, as well as the total blood protein level and albumin level in normal rat. However, similar effect was not observed in ovx rat.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of milk basic protein (MBP) on bone metabolism in normal and ovariectomized (Ovx) rats. After 10 d recovery period, the Ovx rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: control, low-dose, medium-dose, and high-dose MBP group. Another 44 normal female rats without ovariectomy were also divided into 4 groups as above. The MBP dosages for each group were respectively 0, 10, 20, 30 mg/kg bw. All rats were i.g. administered for 90 d. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the femur (at proximal end, middle of diaphysis, and distal end) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in vivo. The amounts of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus were analyzed by ICP-AES. Results BMD at distal end of femur was significantly higher in normal low-dose group than in normal control group while no significant effect was observed in Ovx MBP groups. As for the amounts of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, there were no significant differences among normal experimental groups and also among Ovx experimental groups. However, some variations in the level of those minerals were observed. Conclusion MBP at 10 mg/kg bw significantly elevated BMD at femoral distal end in normal rats, while no similar effect was observed in Ovx rats. Besides its influence on bone minerals, there may be another mechanism involved in its effect on bone metabolism.
Effects of Nutritious Yak Bone Powder on Rat Bone Density and Serum Biochemical Indexes

Abstract:Objective: To investigate effects of the mixture of ultrafine yak bone powder, casein phosphopeptide (CPP) and inulin on rat bone density and serum biochemical indexes. Method: Fifty Wistar female rats with about 90 ± 10 g body weight were divided into 5 groups at random, namely control group (normal diet), experiment group NO.1 (fed the diet containing 50% ultrafine yak bone powder plus 10% CPP plus 40% inulin), experiment group NO.2 (fed the diet containing 50% ultrafine yak bone powder plus 20% CPP plus 30% inulin), experiment NO.3 (fed the diet containing 50% ultrafine yak bone powder plus 30% CPP plus 20% inulin), and experiment group (fed the diet containing 50% ultrafine yak bone powder plus 40% CPP plus 10% inulin). All the diets for the five groups contain 10 ±1 g calcium /kg. Results: Compared to the control group, the bone densities of four experiment groups rise by 23.48%, 20.0%, 21.74% and 18.26%, respectively. There are no statistical differences (p0.05) in contents of AKP and TG, the CHO content of experiment group NO.2 is significantly lower 9.82% than that of the control group (p 0.05), and there are no statistical differences (p0.05) in contents of K+ and Na+ in serum as well, but compared to the control group the Ca+ contents of four experiment groups decline by 47.1%, 12%, 14.49% and 8.29%, respectively. The serum Clcontent of experiment group NO.2 is significantly lower than that of the control group and other three experiment groups (p0.05). Conclusion: Nutritious yak bone powder may improve bone density and there are no adverse effects on the serum biochemical indexes.
[Effect of the whey basic protein on bone mineral density].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To examine the effects of the whey basic protein on bone metabolism of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and healthy mid-aged women. METHODS:Forty-four female SD rats were randomized by weight into four groups of eleven rats each and fed 10 mg x kg BW(-1) x d(-1), 20 mg x kg BW(-1) x d(-1), 30 mg x kg BW(-1) x d(-1) of whey basic protein and control diet was given respectively by intragastrically injection for 90 days. Bone mineral density of femur was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in vitro. Sixty-three health women [(37.9 +/- 4.3) years old] were randomly assigned to treatment with placebo, 30 mg whey basic protein per day or 60 mg whey basic protein per day for 24 weeks. The bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar vertebrae L2-LA, femoral neck and right calcaneus of each subject were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at 0 and the 24th week of treatment. Serum bone specific alkaline phosphatase and N-telopeptide (NTX) were measured at 0 and the 14th week. RESULTS:The mean BMD value of the distal end of the femur in 10 mg x kg BW(-1) x d(-1) whey basic protein group was significantly higher than that of the control group at the end of the trail. But after treatment by doses of whey basic protein used in the study, there were no differences between the control group and others groups on bone mineral density in the human trail. CONCLUSION:Whey basic protein should enhance the bone mineral density of the rats' femur and no obvious effect was detected in the human trail.

Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of soy isoflavones combined with calcium and bone collagen on bone mineral density(BMD)and biomecthanics in ovariectomized(OVX)rats.Methods Female rats except sham group were ovariectiomized.All rats were administered with different diets for 12 weeks.BMD and indexes of biomechanics were detected in grouped rats including OVX,sham,low dose combination,middle dose combination,high dose combination and calcium carbonate groups.Results The combination could significantly increase the BMD and some indexes of biomechanical in the ovariectomized rats.Conclusion The combination can increase the BMD and improve bone biomechanics and benefit postmenopausal osteoporosis(PMOP).

Abstract:Objective:To study the effects of biological calcium carbonate(B-CaCO3) and calcium carbonate(CaCO3) on osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats.Methods: The rat model of osteoporosis was induced by ovariectomy.Having been fed with B-CaCO3 and CaCO3 for 12 weeks,the concentration of alkaline phosphatase in bone(b-ALP) was measured by colorimetric method.The concentration of estradiol(E2) in serum was measured by competitive radio immunologic method.Bone mineral density(BMD) of femur of rats was determined by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry(DEXA).Biomechanical characteristics of femur were measured by three point bending test.Results: The BMD of femur of rats and femur weight were increased.The resistance of bending and compression of femur of rats was enhanced,and B-CaCO3 can increase the BMD of distal femur remarkably.Conclusion: Both BCaCO3 and CaCO3 had antiosteoporotic effects on ovariectomized rats, and B-CaCO3 has much more effect on osteoporosis than CaCO3.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To identify the influence of enzymatic cattle bone, enzymatic fish bone and ultrafine-enzymatic cattle bone on apparent calcium absorption rate and bone density in rats.METHODS:Female SD rats were randomly divided into 9 groups with 10 rats in each group, and were fed with low- and high-enzymatic cattle bone diet, low- and high-enzymatic fish bone diet, low-and high-ultrafine-enzymatic cattle bone diet, low- and high-calcium carbonate diet and low calcium control diet for 13 weeks. The calcium content of the low and high experimental groups was 500 mg/100 g and 1000 mg/100 g, and the calcium content of the control group was 100 mg/100 g. 3-day calcium metabolic experiment was conducted by the end of the 3rd week. Bone density was assayed by the end of the 13th week.RESULTS:The apparent calcium absorption rate was related to the calcium content in diet in a range of 60.69% -65.84% in the low dose groups and 34.00% - 44.06% in the high dose groups. The apparent calcium absorption rate in experimental groups was obviously lower than that in the low calcium control group (P < 0.05). Bone density of rats in enzymatic cattle bone, enzymatic fish bone and ultrafine-enzymatic cattle bone groups were obviously higher than that in calcium carbonate group at the same calcium content in diet (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS:According to the results of calcium apparent absorption rate and bone density, enzymatic cattle bone, enzymatic fish bone, ultrafine-enzymatic cattle bone, and calcium carbonate could be used as sources of calcium.

Abstract:This study assessed the effect of cow milk (CM) and sheep milk (SM) consumption on the micro-structure, mechanical function, and mineral composition of rat femora in a male weanling rat model. Male weanling rats were fed a basal diet with a 50% reduction in calcium and phosphorus content (low Ca/P-diet) supplemented with either SM or CM. Rats were fed for 28 days, after which the femora were harvested and stored. The femora were analyzed by μ-CT, three-point bending, and inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The addition of either milk to the low Ca/P-diet significantly increased (p < 0.05) trabecular bone volume, trabecular bone surface density, trabecular number, cortical bone volume, and maximum force, when compared to rats that consumed only the low Ca/P-diet. The consumption of either milk resulted in a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in trabecular pattern factor, and cortical bone surface to volume ratio when compared to rats that consumed only the low Ca/P-diet. The results were achieved with a lower consumption of SM compared to that of CM (p < 0.05). This work indicates that SM and CM can help overcome the effects on bone of a restriction in calcium and phosphorus intake.

Abstract:Calcium deficiency is prone to fractures, osteoporosis and other symptoms. In this study, sheep bone protein hydrolysates (SBPHs) were obtained by protease hydrolysis. A low-calcium-diet-induced calcium-deficiency rat model was established to investigate the effects of SBPHs on calcium absorption and intestinal flora composition. The results showed that an SBPHs + CaCl2 treatment significantly increased the bone calcium content, bone mineral density, trabecular bone volume, and trabecular thickness, and reduced trabecular separation, and changed the level of bone turnover markers (P < 0.05). Supplementation of SBPHs + CaCl2 can remarkably enhance the bone mechanical strength, and the microstructure of bone was improved, and the trabecular network was more continuous, complete, and thicker. Additionally, SBPHs + CaCl2 dietary increased the abundance of Firmicutes and reduced the abundance of Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobiota, and promoted the production of short chain fatty acids. This study indicated that SBPHs promoted calcium absorption and could be applied to alleviate osteoporosis.

Abstract:Scope: Osteoporosis poses a health challenge especially for postmenopausal women. This study aims to explore nutritional strategies to counteract bone demineralization in ovarierectomized (OVX) rats. Methods and results: OVX rats (n = 49) are fed with one of six different diets, where two different calcium sources (dairy calcium or calcium carbonate) are provided alone or in combination with either inulin (5%) or lactose (0.5%). In addition, a calcium-deficient diet is included. Calcium supplementation increases intestinal concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and the abundance of fecal Acinetobacter and Propionibacterium. Accompanied with these effects, rats fed with calcium-fortified diets have higher bone mineral density, bone mineral content and femur mechanical strength, lower serum levels of bone markers, and lower expression of calcium absorption-related genes (transient receptor potential vanilloid type 6 (TRPV6), calcium-binding protein (CaBP) compared with control. Inulin supplementation results in a markedly increased production of intestinal SCFAs, a decreased intestinal pH, an increased abundance of Allobaculum and Bifidobacterium, and an increased expression of Trpv6. Inulin and lactose show beneficial effects on spine bone. Conclusion: Calcium modulates gut microbiome composition and function. A pronounced effect of inulin on metabolic activity in the gastrointestinal tract is evident, and lactose supplementation decreases jejunal pH that might be associated with slightly enhanced bone mineralization.
Sheep bone collagen peptide ameliorates osteoporosis by regulating RANK/RANKL/OPG signal pathway

Abstract:Sheep bone collagen peptide (SBCP) has attracted attention due to its potential effects on bone health. This study aims to explore the bone protective effect of SBCP in the presence of estrogen deficiency. Ovariectomized (OVX) female rats were given different dose rates (0, 0.68, 2.05, 3.40 g/kg BW) of SBCP for 8 consecutive weeks. At the end of the treatment, the serological indexes and tibial mineral content were measured. The microstructure and morphological changes of femur bones were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) staining. Femur bones were harvested for determination of expression level of RANK, RANKL, OPG by molecular biological techniques. 3.40 g/kg BW SBCP treatment decreased the PINP and β-CTx levels but increased the tibial calcium and phosphorus contents significantly in estrogen deficient rats. Expression of RANK and RANKL decreased however expression of OPG increased in the bone of estrogen deficient rats which received 3.40 g/kg BW SBCP with greater effects than SBCP-M and SBCP-L treatments. SBCP helps to overcome the adverse effect of estrogen deficiency the bone and thus this nutriment could potentially be used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of rats sera containing Benefiting-bone Capsule (BBC) on the cell proliferation of skull osteoblast in neonatal SD rats.METHODS:Forty female SD rats, aged 12 months, were randomly divided into 4 groups including N.S. group, low dosage, middle dosage and high dosage BBC group, the sera were obtained at different times. MTT method was used to determine the effect of BBC on osteoblasts proliferation.RESULTS:The MTT value reached its highest point 1.5 hours after oral administration (P < 0.05). MTT of high dosage BBC met the maximum value with the concentration of 25% (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS:The rats sera containing BBC can promote proliferation of osteoblast.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of soybean peptide calcium on apparent calcium absorption rate and bone mineral density of rats.Methods Totally 50 male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups at comparable body weight:the low calcium control group,calcium carbonate control group and 3 groups with low,medium and high dose of soybean peptide calcium(SPC).Rats of each group were fed with designed forage.At the end of the fourth week of the feeding.calcium metabolic experiment was performed for 3 days and the apparent calcium absorption rate was calculated.Three months later,the left and right femurs of the rats were stripped to assay the bone calcium and bone density.Results Apparent calcium absorption rate of the calcium carbonate control group was 69.9 ％,which was lower than medium(82.6 ％) and high doses(77.4％) of soybean peptide calcium groups(F =31.371,P=0.000,0.001).Compared with the low calcium control group,rats with medium and high doses of SPC had obviously increased levels of weights(F =3.150,P =0.010,0.002),bone mass(F =3.195,P =0.015,0.002),calcium content (F=4.506,P =0.004,0.001)and bone mineral density of midpoint (F=6.185,P =0.006,0.000) and far end of femur (F =6.081,P=0.027,0.000).Despite of the weight index (P＞0.05),the high dose of soybean peptide calcium group also had the same results as the calcium carbonate control group (P=0.046,0.024,0.013,0.001).Conclusions Soybean peptide calcium can promote the apparent calcium absorption rate and increase the bone mineral density.
Effects of Sheep Bone Peptide-Chelated Calcium on Calcium Absorption and Bone Deposition in Rats Fed a Low-Calcium Diet

Abstract:Sheep bones, as the main byproduct after sheep slaughter, are rich in proteins, but their utilization in deep processing is relatively low. Currently, calcium deficiency is a common health issue that can lead to metabolic bone diseases. Peptide calcium chelate is considered a superior substance, having a significant effect on improving the absorption and utilization efficiency of calcium in the human body. This study used sheep bone byproducts as the raw material to prepare sheep bone peptide-chelated calcium (SBP-Ca) and its structure was characterized and analyzed in depth. SBP-Ca was supplemented in a low-calcium diet to assess its effects on calcium absorption and bone formation in a rat model experiencing calcium deficiency. The results showed that under optimal preparation conditions for SBP-Ca (peptide-calcium ratio set at 1 : 1, pH maintained at 7, temperature set to 45°C, and duration of 60 min), calcium could chelate with sheep bone peptide (SBP) at the sites C=O, -NH2, and -COOH sites, forming a structurally dense SBP-Ca with a chelation rate of up to 89.24%. In rats fed a low-calcium diet, SBP-Ca significantly improved the rat femoral diameter, dry weight, trabecular bone structure, bone density, and bone volume fraction ( P < 0.05 ). A decline in serum alkaline phosphatase levels ( P < 0.05 ), elevation in bone calcium content, and a rise in serum osteocalcin levels ( P < 0.05 ) were observed. Furthermore, morphological studies on bone tissue suggest that SBP-Ca has the ability to restore trabecular bone structure. In conclusion, SBP-Ca has been successfully prepared as a novel calcium absorption promoter. By improving the bioavailability of calcium, bone formation was facilitated, demonstrating a significant application value in the prevention of calcium deficiency disorders.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of Benefiting-bone capsule(BBC) on bone mineral density and the levels of CGRP and SP in plasma and bone tissue in ovariectomized rats,and to further explain the mechanism of BBC on preventing and treating osteoporosis.Methods 40 SD rats were randomly divided into four groups:sham-operated group,model group,BBC low-dose group and high-dose group.After ovariectomy 1 w,BBC groups were given by intragastric administration with different doses of BBC and model group was given with normal physiological saline.After 12 w,the change of bone mineral density were observed,the levels of CGRP and SP in plasma and bone tissue were measured by ELISA.Results Compared with sham-operated group,BMD of model group was decreased significantly(P0.01),the levels of CGRP and SP in serum and bone tissue were also decreased significantly(P0.01).The bone mineral density in BBC low dose group and BBC high dose group was significantly higher than that of model group(P0.01),the levels of CGRP and SP in plasma and bone tissue was significantly higher than those of model group(P0.01),but still lower than that of the sham-operated group(P0.01).Conclusion BBC can regulate the levels of CGRP and SP,which may be one of its mechanisms of anti-osteoporosis.
Strontium-Calcium Coadministration Stimulates Bone Matrix Osteogenic Factor Expression and New Bone Formation in A Large Animal Model

Abstract:Strontium (Sr) has become increasingly attractive for use in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis by concomitantly inhibiting bone resorption and enhancing bone formation. Strontium shares similar chemical, physical, and biological characteristics with calcium (Ca), which has been widely used as a dietary supplement in osteoporosis. However, the effects of Sr-Ca coadministration on bone growth and remodeling are yet to be extensively reported. In this study, 18 ovariectornized goats were divided into four groups: three groups of five goats each treated with 100 mg/kg/day Ca, Ca plus 24 mg/kg/day Sr (Ca + 24Sr), or Ca plus 40 mg/kg/day Sr (Ca + 40Sr) and three untreated goats fed low calcium feed. Serum Sr levels increased 6- and 10-fold in the Ca + 24Sr and Ca + 40Sr groups, respectively. Similarly, Sr in the bone increased four- and sixfold in these two groups. Sr-Ca coadministration considerably increased bone mineral apposition rate (MAR). The expression of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) was significantly upregulated within the Ca + 40Sr treatment group; tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-agr; expression was significantly downregulated in the Ca and Ca + 40Sr groups. The results indicate that Sr-Ca coadministration increases osteogenic gene expression and stimulates new bone formation. (C) 2008 Orthopaedic Research Society. Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
