Abstract:A series of functional cation-regulated isopolymolybdate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, Na2H2[Mo4O12(C8H17O5N)2]·10H2O (1), Na2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·10H2O [M = Cu, 2; Ni, 3; Co, 4; Zn, 5; Bis-tris = 2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2″-nitrilotriethanol], and (NH4)2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·6H2O (M = Zn, 6; Cu, 7), were synthesized and characterized toward advanced molecular catalyst design. Compound 1 is a covalently bonded adduct, and its self-assembly process can be probed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Compounds 2-7 are polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrids containing classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations with Bis-tris ligands. All of these compounds showed remarkable catalytic effects for selective sulfide oxidation. To the best of our knowledge, compound 5 presents the best catalytic activity so far among the reported hybrid materials with common easily synthesized small-molecule POM clusters and also exhibits outstanding reliability. The conclusion of the catalytic effect is drawn from the results that Zn-based compounds have better catalytic effects than other transition-metal-containing compounds and the compound constructed by Na+ has higher catalytic activity than that constructed by NH4+. The mechanism studies show that the improvements of the catalytic performance are caused by the synergy between classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations. ESI-MS data and UV-vis spectra revealed that the POM anions can form intermediate peroxomolybdenum units during catalytic reaction. Further, the combination of the substrate thioanisole with complex cations was characterized by NMR experiments and UV-vis spectra. Thus, a new synergistic mechanism of anions and cations is proposed in which the activated thioanisole is used as a nucleophile to attack the peroxomolybdenum bonds, and this provides a new strategy in the design of reliable POM-based catalysts.

Abstract:The functionalization of polyoxometalates (POMs), especially with an amino group to yield organonitrogenous derivatives of POMs, is an efficient approach to the enrichment of their structures and the diversification of their properties for various applications. The mechanism for the formation of organonitrogenous-derivatized hexamolybdates was explored by investigating the monofunctionalization of the [Mo6O19]2- ion with methylamine using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The calculations show that the direct imidoylization of hexamolybdate with methylamine is both kinetically and thermodynamically unfavorable. However, this imidoylization was found to take place readily in the presence of dimethylcarbodiimide (DMC), for which the free-energy barrier was calculated to be +32.5 kcal?mol-1 in acetonitrile. Moreover, various factors controlling the efficiency of the imidoylization were examined. The calculations show that [W5MoO19]2- has a relatively lower reactivity than [Mo6O19]2-, and that the imidoylization of [W6O19]2- is an unfavorable process. With respect to the effect of carbodiimides, it is found that the catalytic activity is directly proportional to the electron-withdrawing effects of the substituents. As to the reactivity of R?NH2, the computation results indicate that the free-energy barriers of the substitution reactions are linearly correlated with the basicity constants (pKb) of the amino groups. It is noteworthy that the introduction of the proton dramatically decreases the free-energy barrier of the imidoylization of [Mo6O19]2- catalyzed by DMC to 24.3 kcal?mol-1 in acetonitrile.

Abstract:The hexamolybdate cluster has been functionalized with fluorine-containing aromatic amine by the DCC (N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide) dehydrating protocol and two novel mono-functionalized arylimido derivatives of hexamolybdates bearing the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group and trifluoromethoxy group, (Bu4N)2[Mo6O18(≡NAr)] (Ar=o-CF3C6H4) 1 and (Bu4N)2[Mo6O18(≡NAr)] (Ar=p-OCF3C6H4) 2 have been synthesized by improved method. Complete assignments were achieved for the title compounds by elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR, UV/visible and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The preliminary herbicidal activity test indicated that they have some herbicidal activities.

Abstract:Three novel mono-functionalized arylimido derivatives of hexamolybdate bearing the strongest electron-withdrawing nitro group, (Bu4N)(2)[Mo6O18( NAr)] (1, 2 and 3), have been synthesized for the first time by an improved reaction of octamolybdate ion and 3-nitroaniline hydrochloride, 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline hydrochloride and 2-methyl-5-nitroaniline hydrochloride respectively with DCC (N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide) as a dehydrating agent. Complete assignments were achieved for the title compounds by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, UV/visible and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The preliminary antitumor activity test indicated that the title compounds have some effects on the cellular growth inhibition of K562 cells.

Abstract:A series of aliphatic organoimido derivatives of hexamolybdate based on amantadine, namely (nBu4 N)2 [Mo6 O18 (NC10 H15 )] (1), (nBu4 N)2 {cis-[Mo6 O17 (NC10 H15 )2 ]} (2), (nBu4 N)2 {trans-[Mo6 O17 (NC10 H15 )2 ]} (3), and (nBu4 N)2 [Mo6 O16 (NC10 H15 )3 ] (4), was synthesized in reasonable yield by dehydration with N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC). They were characterized by IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. The spectral and structural similarities and differences between monosubstituted, cis-disubstituted, and trans-disubstituted organoimido derivatives were elucidated and may provide guidance for related work on organoimido-functionalized Lindqvist-type polyoxometalates. In addition, trans-disubstituted and polysubstituted derivatives containing aliphatic organoimido ligands have not yet been reported, and the crystal structure of the trans isomer may lead us to a deeper understanding of disubstituted derivatives. Furthermore, proliferation and morphology of MCF-7 cells were studied with compound 1. The present results show that the DCC-dehydrating protocol could be an efficient approach to covalently graft bioactive ligands such as amantadine onto POMs and enhance their application in clinical cancer treatment.

Abstract:Organoimidoylization of Polyoxometalates (POMs) can dramatically modify the electronic structures of POMs and gives rise to novel “value-adding” properties of the POMs for promising material applications including photo-electronic transformation and catalysis. To date, the preparation of multi-functionalized organoimido derivatives of POMs is generally conducted under strict condition and is time-consuming with limited yields. Herein, a series of regioselective polyorganoimido derivatives of POMs, ocatant - [Mo 6 O 13 (NAr) 3 ( μ 2 -NAr) 3 ] 2 − (Ar = phenyl ( 1 ), p -methoxyphenyl ( 2 ) and p -ethylphenyl ( 3 )), were synthesized with high selectivity and in good yields via a general and highly regioselective synthesis method, called as the one-octant synthesis protocol. The reaction was monitored by ESI-MS and the as-prepared products were studied by ESI-MS, IR, UV-Vis, EA, 1 HNMR, single crystal XRD analysis and DFT calculations. The one-octant synthesis protocol here may serve as an idea method to design novel nanoscale POM-based organic-inorganic multi-functional hybrids.

Abstract:Three Phe and Tyr derivatives, 2-amino-3-(4-aminophenyl)-propionic acid (AAP), 3E-[5-(2-amino-2-carboxyethyl)-2-methoxyphenyl]-acrylic acid (AMPA) and 3-(4-aminophenyl)-2-(carboxymethyl-amino)-propionic acid (ACP) have been chosen as the ligands to construct four kinds of novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (five structures). These structures are, [Cd(II){(R)-AAP}(Py)(H(2)O)](ClO(4)), (R)-1; [Cd(II){(S)-AAP}(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4)), (S)-2; [Zn(2) (II){(R,S)-AMPA}(H(2)O)], (R,S)-3; [Zn(2) (II){(R)-ACP}(Py)(3)](ClO(4))(2), (R)-4; and the inversion twin of (R)-1. Rational design to adjust the "depth" and the "width" of ligands can mediate the size and the shape of the grids of these 2D layers. Additionally, among these compounds, three pure chiral coordination polymers are obtained, owing to the inducement of chirality by the modified amino acids. This property makes them potential NLO materials.

Abstract:Bi-alkylimido functionalization of hexamolybdates has been developed and several novel di-substituted alkylimido hexamolybdates with n-butyl, cyclohexyl and tert-butylamines as the imido-releasing reagents have been synthesized in reasonable yields. Their structures have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, and ESI mass spectrometry. Moreover, the structures of [Mo(6)O(17)(NCy)(2)](2-) and [Mo(6)O(17)(NCMe(3))(2)](2) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. It is notable that the compound (Bu(4)N)(2)[Mo(6)O(17)(NCy)(2)] crystallizes in polar space group Fdd2 with potential ferroelectricity. In addition, theoretical investigation of the reactivity and regioselectivity of bi-alkylimido functionalization has also been conducted. The calculation results show that more energy is required for the bi-functionalization process than for the mono-substitution process, and that the cis-bi-functionalization is the kinetically favored process while trans-[Mo(6)O(17)(NR)(2)](2-) is the thermodynamically favored product.
Amine-Tagged Fragmented Ligand Installation for Covalent Modification of MOF-74

Abstract:MOF-74 is one of the most explored metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), but its functionalization is limited to the dative post-synthetic modification (PSM) of the monodentate solvent site. Owing to the nature of the organic ligand and framework structure of MOF-74, the covalent PSM of MOF-74 is very demanding. Herein, we report, for the first time, the covalent PSM of amine-tagged defective Ni-MOF-74, which is prepared by de novo solvothermal synthesis by using aminosalicylic acid as a functionalized fragmented organic ligand. The covalent PSM of the amino group generates metal binding sites, and subsequent post-synthetic metalation with PdII ions affords the PdII -incorporated Ni-MOF-74 catalyst. This catalyst exhibits highly efficient, size-selective, and recyclable catalytic activity for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. This strategy is also useful for the covalent modification of amine-tagged defective Ni2 (DOBPDC), an expanded analogue of MOF-74.
Tosylation of Alcohols: an Effective Strategy for the Functional Group Transformation of Organic Derivatives of Polyoxometalates.

Abstract:Recently, the organic functionalization of polyoxometalates (POMs) has drawn increasing interest, and an easy and effective route to achieve organic derivatives is of great importance. Herein, the first reported synthesis of a tosyl ester derivative of the polyoxometalate (Bu4N)2[V6O13{(OCH2)3CCH2SO3C7H4}2]·2.5CH3CN (compound 1) was performed by using DMAP as an activating reagent and triethylamine as an HCl scavenger. The tosyl ester was transformed into an azide or halide group by using sodium azide or sodium bromide, respectively, as the nucleophilic agent. Two derivatives of POMs, (Bu4N)2[V6O13{(OCH2)3CCH2N3}2]·4CH3CN (compound 2) and (Bu4N)2[V6O13{(OCH2)3CCH2Br}2] (compound 3), were easily obtained. All the compounds were structurally and compositionally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, UV-Vis spectroscopy and TGA. This work provides a new route for the functional group transformation of organic derivatives of polyoxometalates.

Abstract:The incorporation of reactive functional groups onto the exterior of metal-organic cages (MOCs) opens up new opportunities to link their well-defined scaffolds into functional porous solids. Amine moieties offer access to a rich catalogue of covalent chemistry; however, they also tend to coordinate undesirably and interfere with MOC formation, particular in the case of Cu 2 paddlewheel-based MOCs. We demonstrate that tuning the basicity of an aniline-functionalized ligand enables the self-assembly of a soluble, amine-functionalized Cu 4 L 4 lantern cage ( 1 ). Importantly, we show control over the coordinative propensity of the exterior amine of the ligand, which enables us to isolate a crystalline, two-dimensional metal-organic framework composed entirely of MOC units ( 2 ). Furthermore, we show that the nucleophilicity of the exterior amine of 1 can be accessed in solution to generate a cross-linked cage polymer ( 3 ) via imine condensation.

Abstract:Three novel rigid-rod conjugated organic-POM hybrids (1, 2 and 3) containing pendant amino terminus, with different rod lengths and different substituents on the rod, have been respectively synthesized via one-pot reaction of hexamolybdate and the corresponding aromatic diamine (for 1 and 2) and reaction of octamolybdate and the corresponding aromatic diamine dihydrochloride (for 3) with N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as a dehydrating agent. These complexes have been characterized by UV/Vis, IR, 1H NMR, ESI and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The influences of the rod length and substituents on the properties of these compounds have been systematically investigated, which provide necessary information for further preparations of complicated hybrid materials via reactions with pendant amino groups.

Abstract:The syntheses of the neutral molybdenum imido alkylidene N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes of the general formula [Mo(NAr)(CHCMe2Ph)(NHC)XY] (Ar = 2‐tBu‐C6H4, 2‐CF3‐C6H4, 2,6‐Me2‐C6H3, 2,6‐Cl2‐C6H3, adamantyl; X, Y = OTf, OC(CF3)3, OCH(CF3)2, OC6F5, SC6F5, 2,5‐bis(pentafluorophenyl)phen‐1‐yl) bearing electron‐withdrawing NHCs (1,3‐dimethyl‐4,5‐dichloroimidazol‐2‐ylidene (IMeCl2), 1,3,4‐triphenyl‐1,2,4‐triazol‐5‐ylidene (TPT)) are reported. Complementary, the corresponding cationic molybdenum imido alkylidene NHC complexes of the general formula [Mo(NAr)(CHCMe2R)(NHC)X+ B(ArF)4‐/Al(OC(CF3)3)4‐] (R = Me, Ph; B(ArF)4‐ = tetrakis (3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate) have been prepared. Aiming at tungsten oxo complexes, reaction of [W(O)Cl2(CHCMe2Ph)(PMe2Ph)2] with AgI.IMeCl2 followed by the addition of lithium terphenoxide yields [W(O)(CHCMe2Ph)(IMeCl2)(DPPO)2]. For comparison, [W(O)Cl(CHCMe2Ph)(IMes)(OSi(OtBu)3)] was prepared via reaction of [W(O)Cl2(CHCMe2Ph)(PMe2Ph)(IMes)] with KOSi(OtBu)3 [W(O)(CHCMe2Ph)(IMeCl2)(DPPO)(Et2O)+B(ArF)4‐] (DPPO = 2,6‐diphenylphenoxide;) became accessible via reaction of [W(O)(DPPO)2(CHCMe2Ph)(IMeCl2)] with anilinium B(ArF)4‐. The structural peculiarities of selected complexes are reported. Benchmark ring‐closing metathesis and homometathesis reactions revealed that the neutral complexes bearing weakly coordinating NHCs such as IMeCl2 and TPT possessed only moderate activity, which could, however, be improved by preparing the corresponding cationic metal alkylidene complexes.

Abstract:A novel naphthylimido derivative of hexamolybdate, (Bu4N)(2)[Mo6O18N(Naph-1)] ( 1), was synthesized for the first time by the reaction of octamolybdate ion and 1-naphthyl amine hydrochloride with DCC (N, N,-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide) as a dehydrating agent. The ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum shows the lowest energy electronic transition of 1 occurs at 383 nm, which is dramatically red-shifted compared to that of [Mo6O19](2-) and other monosubstituted phenylimido hexamolybdates reported in the literature. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry studies on compound 1 show the reversible reduction wave at - 0.53 V, which is cathodically shifted relative to that of [Mo6O19](2-). Another interesting characteristic of 1 is that the cluster anions form supramolecular 1D chains via C- H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonding interactions.

Abstract:By addition of excess acid into the reaction mixture, a series of organically-derived Anderson-type polyoxometalates, {[R1CR2(CH2O)2]CrMo6O18(OH)4}(3-), with diols as the ligands are reported herein. Such a diol functionalization mode not only works for some specific triol ligands but also can readily be extended to the diol ligands, which will greatly enrich the species of alkoxo-derivatized Anderson POM clusters.
