Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative B-H/C-H cross coupling of monocarborane anions with alkenes is reported, allowing for the first time the isolation of selectively penta-alkenylated boron clusters. The reaction cascade is regioselective for the cage positions, leading directly to B2-6 functionalization. Under mild and convenient conditions, styrenes, benzylic alkenes and aliphatic alkenes are demonstrated to be viable coupling partners with exclusive vinyl-type B-C bond formation. Multiple subsequent transformations provide access to directing group-free products, chiral derivatives and penta-alkylated cages. The five-fold coupling, combined with the latter reactions, represents a powerful methodology for the straightforward synthesis of new classes of boron clusters.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of allylic alkyl ethers with organoboron compounds through the cleavage of the inert C(sp(3))-O(alkyl) bonds is described. Several types of allylic alkyl ethers can be coupled with various boronic acids or their derivatives to give the corresponding products in good to excellent yields with wide functional group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity. The gram-scale reaction and late-stage modification of biologically active compounds further prove the practicality of this synthetic method.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed Kumada coupling of aniline derivatives was developed by selective cleavage of aryl C-N bonds under mild reaction conditions. Without preinstallation of an ortho directing group on anilines, the cross-coupling reactions of Boc-protected aromatic amines with aryl Grignard reagents afforded unsymmetric biaryls. Mechanistic studies by DFT calculations revealed that the nickel-mediated C-N bond cleavage is the rate-limiting step.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the growing interest in the remote functionalization of alkenes for it offers a strategy to activate the challenging C-H bonds distant from the initiation point via alkene isomerization/functionalization. However, the catalytic enantioselective isomerization/functionalization with one single transition metal catalyst remains rare. Here we report a highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed remote C-H bond borylation of internal alkenes via sequential alkene isomerization/hydroboration. A chiral ligand featured twisted pincer, anionic, and non-rigid characters is designed and used for this transformation. This methodology, which is operationally simple using low catalyst loading without additional activator, shows excellent enantioselectivity and can be used to convert various internal alkenes with regio- and stereoisomers to valuable chiral secondary organoboronates with good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:A palladium-catalysed aromative benzylic allylation and allenylation of benzyl chlorides with allyl and allenyl pinacolborates is described for the first time. The reactions proceed smoothly in the presence of a bidentate phosphine ligand to afford normal cross-coupling products in good yields. This novel synthetic procedure exhibits good tolerance for various electron-withdrawing and -donating functional groups linked to aromatic rings and is also well tolerant of sensitive functional groups such as NO 2 , CF 3 , CN, and COOMe. The utilisation of a bidentate ligand and heating are essential to transformation. The DFT calculation results reveal that wide-bite-angle bidentate ligands are beneficial to the formation of an η 1 -benzyl- η 1 -allylpalladium intermediate and that the normal coupling is thermodynamically favourable.

Abstract:The combination of a Pd(0) source and a phosphoramidite ligand promotes a formal allylic cross‐coupling between alkylidenecyclopropanes (ACPs) and boronic acids to yield synthetically appealing 1,1‐disubstituted alkenes. Remarkably, the reaction proceeds both under neutral and basic conditions, and works with both aryl‐ and alkenylboronic acids. DFT calculations suggest that the reaction entails a C‐C activation/protonation mechanism instead of a hydropalladation pathway, such as has been proposed for other metal‐promoted hydrofunctionalizations of ACPs.

Abstract:The Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction of unsymmetric 1,3-disubstituted secondary allylic carbonates with arylboronic acids has been developed in a wet solvent under a base-free system to afford allyl-aryl coupling products in a high level of isolated yields with complete regio- and E/Z-selectivities with good to excellent chemoselectivities. The coupling reaction of optically active allyl carbonates gave allyl-aryl coupling products with excellent enantioselectivities with inversion of the stereochemistry. This coupling method was successfully applied to the synthesis of (S)-naproxen.

Abstract:Pd-II-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp(3))-H cross-coupling of free carboxylic acids with organoborons has been realized using either mono-protected amino acid (MPAA) ligands or mono-protected aminoethyl amine (MPAAM) ligands. A diverse range of aryl- and vinyl-boron reagents can be used as coupling partners to provide chiral carboxylic acids. This reaction provides an alternative approach to the enantioselective synthesis of cyclopropanecarboxylic acids and cyclobutanecarboxylic acids containing -chiral tertiary and quaternary stereocenters. The utility of this reaction was further demonstrated by converting the carboxylic acid into cyclopropyl amine without loss of optical activity.

Abstract:Unprecedented palladium-catalysed regio- and stereo-selective coupling reactions of homoallenylboronates with (hetero)aryl iodides, allyl bromides and alkynyl bromides in aqueous solution were successfully developed. The corresponding 1,3-dienes, skipped dienes and conjugate enynes were obtained as products, respectively, in high yields and with specific stereoselectivity. Therefore, the homoallenylboronates were potentially powerful and flexible "platform" molecules to form the complex 1,3-dienyl compounds.

Abstract:Herein, we report a copper-catalyzed C-O cross-coupling of N-methoxy amides and arylboronic acids for the synthesis of aryl-N-methoxy arylimides. The fully selective O-arylation of the N-methoxy amides is found to be greatly prompted by the inexpensive and commercially available CuI. The reaction conditions tolerate a variety of functional groups and promote different reactivities depending on the electronic and steric properties of the distorted substrates.

Abstract:Aldehyde decarbonylation is a vital chemical transformation in the synthesis of natural products. Nature accomplishes this process through a family of decarbonylase enzymes, while in the laboratory, harsh transition metals and elevated temperatures are required. Herein, we report a mild aldehyde decarbonylation reaction that exhibits exclusive selectivity for ortho -aldehydes during a tandem nitrile boronic acid cross-coupling reaction. A wide substrate scope is displayed that includes regioselective removal of the ortho -aldehyde from phenyl boronic acids in the presence of meta - or para -aldehydes. A mechanistic investigation of the observed regioselectivity for ortho -aldehydes by density functional theory (DFT) calculations shows that the CO ligand extrusion is energetically more favorable for the ortho position as compared to the para position. Abstract:Efficient palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of alpha-diazocarbonyl compounds and arylboronic acids or aryl halides have been developed. The reaction proceeds smoothly for a range of diazo compounds, boronic acids, and halides. The coupling reaction conditions tolerate various substituents on the aromatic rings of the substrates, such as chloro, fluoro, acyl, oxo, ester, and nitro groups. This coupling reaction constitutes a novel access to alpha-aryl-substituted alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Mechanistically, palladium-carbene is supposed to be the key intermediate; its formation is followed by migratory insertion of an aryl group to the carbenic carbon of the palladium-carbene complex and subsequent beta-hydride elimination. Kinetic isotope effect (KIE) data measured for intra- and intermolecular competition experiments suggest that beta-hydride elimination is not involved in the rate-determining step.
