Abstract:The interaction of square-planar metal complexes through space is of fundamental interest and relevant for the potential cooperative catalysis of two metal complex sites. In order to elucidate gold/gold, gold/porphyrin, and porphyrin/porphyrin interactions in the formal oxidation states +III and +II (after reduction) and in the excited triplet state after light excitation, a Pacman bis(gold(III)) complex [Au2(DPD)][PF6]2 with square-planar face-to-face gold(porphyrin) moieties has been prepared and characterized. Absorption and luminescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and EPR spectroscopy on [Au2(DPD)]n+ and a mononuclear reference are complemented by DFT and TDDFT calculations.
Gold tripyrrindione: Redox chemistry and reactivity with dichloromethane

Abstract:The identification of ligands that stabilize Au(III) centers has led to the isolation of complexes for applications in catalysis, gold-based therapeutics, and functional materials. Remarkably, the tetrapyrrolic porphyrin macrocycle supports the coordination of both Au(III) and Au(II) centers. Herein, we report the coordination of gold by tripyrrin-1,14-dione, a linear tripyrrole with the scaffold of naturally occurring metabolites of porphyrin-based protein cofactors (e.g., heme). Tripyrrindione H3TD2 binds Au(III) as a trianionic tridentate ligand to form square planar complex [Au(TD2)(H2O)], which features an adventitious aqua ligand. Two reversible ligand-based oxidations of this complex allow access to the other known redox states of the tripyrrindione framework. Conversely, (spectro)electrochemical measurements and DFT analysis indicate that the reduction of the complex is likely metal-based. The chemical reduction of [Au(TD2)(H2O)] leads to a reactive species that utilizes dichloromethane in the formation of a cyclometalated organo-Au(III) complex. Both the aqua and the organometallic Au(III) complexes were characterized in the solid state by MicroED methods, which were critical for the analysis of the microcrystalline sample of the organo-gold species. Overall, this study illustrates the synthesis of Au(III) tripyrrindione as well as its redox profile and reactivity leading to gold alkylation chemistry.

Abstract:The preparation, characterization, and photochromic properties of a mononuclear gold(I) complex (1oo) with two identical DTE-acetylides and a dinuclear gold(I) complex (2ooo) with both DTE-acetylide and DTE-diphosphine are described. Both gold(I) complexes exhibit multistep and multiple photocyclization/cycloreversion reactions. Particularly, four-state and four-color photochromic switch is successfully achieved for the dinuclear gold(I) complex upon irradiation with appropriate wavelengths of light. In contrast, fully ring-closed form is unattained through multiple photocyclization for the two corresponding model organic compounds coupling with the same DTE units as gold(I) complexes but without gold(I)-participation. It is demonstrated that coordination of gold(I) ion to DTE-acetylides exerts indeed a crucial role in achieving stepwise and selective photocyclization and cycloreversion reactions for both gold(I) complexes, in which the coordinated gold(I) atom acts as an effective "barrier" to prohibit intramolecular energy transfer between multi-DTE moieties.
C-H Acidity and Arene Nucleophilicity As Orthogonal Control of Chemoselectivity in Dual C-H Bond Activation

Abstract:We discovered a cooperative gold/silver catalysis mechanism in the oxidative cross-coupling reaction between 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene and N-TIPS-indole, using DFT calculations. A silver(I)-catalyzed CMD mechanism is responsible for the C-H activation of 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, and C-H acidity determines the chemoselectivity. A gold(III)-catalyzed S(E)2Ar mechanism is responsible for the C3-H activation of N-TIPS-indole, and arene nucleophilicity determines the chemo- and regioselectivity. The orthogonal chemoselectivity control provides a mechanistic guide for dual C-H activation reactions.

Abstract:Using two transition metals to simultaneously catalyze a reaction can offer distinct opportunities for reactivity and selectivity when compared to using single-metal catalyst systems. Creating dual transition metal catalytic systems is complicated, however, by challenges in predicting compatible reactivities and designing turnover pathways for both metals. In this Account, we describe our development of dual-metal catalysis reactions involving gold and a second transition metal. The unique rearrangement intermediates accessible through gold-only catalysis, which exploits the soft Lewis acidity of Au(I), make gold an attractive partner for dual-metal catalysis reactions. Because of the complexity of achieving simultaneous turnover of two catalysts and predicting compatibilities, our approach has been to first gain a fundamental understanding of the reactivity of the two metals with each other, both in stoichiometric and monocatalyzed reactions. To this end, we have investigated the combined reactivity of organogold compounds with palladium, nickel, and rhodium. We narrate the intricacies of turning over two catalysts simultaneously and thereby illuminate the valuable role of fundamental studies in identifying the optimal conditions to promote desirable two-metal reactivity and compatibility. Transmetalation, redox reactivity, and new mechanisms for dual-metal catalytic turnover were probed from this standpoint. We have applied the knowledge gained through these studies to the development of reactions that are dual-catalyzed by gold and palladium, as well as nickel- and rhodium-catalyzed reactions of organogold compounds. More broadly, these new reactions expand the reactivity available to catalytic organogold intermediates via trapping and functionalization reactions with other transition metals. Our investigations reveal strategies useful for designing dual-metal reactions with gold. First, the versatility of gold as a transmetalation partner suggests that many potential methods may exist to intercept catalytic organogold intermediates with a second transition metal. Second, ligands on both metals should be selected carefully in order to prevent catalyst deactivation. Finally, reactions must be designed such that any oxidative steps involving the second metal outcompete undesired reactions with redox-active organogold compounds. We believe that the application of these principles will allow for the design of a diverse set of dual-catalyzed functionalizations befitting the wide variety of gold-catalyzed transformations already established.

Abstract:A simple one-pot two bond-forming reaction for the rapid construction of cyclometalated gold(III) complexes with fully π-conjugated tetradentate ligand is reported. The coupling of the bifunctional gold(III) precursor with the bifunctional aromatic compound has led to the formation of two regioisomers with either C- or N-coordination. Through monitoring by high-throughput high performance liquid chromatography, the regioselectivity of the reaction has been effectively tuned toward the formation of a single isomer, allowing easy separation of the metal complexes. The structures of the complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography, and the photophysical, electrochemical, and electroluminescence (EL) studies have been carried out. Computational study has been performed to provide insights into the nature of the excited states. Isomeric effect has been shown to have a significant influence on the EL behavior of the organic light-emitting devices.

Abstract:A series of luminescent dinuclear gold(I) complexes with different crown ether pendants, [Au(2)(PwedgeP)(S-B15C5)(2)] [S-B15C5 = 4'-mercaptobenzo-15-crown-5, P(wedge)P = bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane (dcpm) (1), bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) (2)] and [Au(2)(P(wedge)P)(S-B18C6)(2)] [S-B18C6 = 4'-mercaptobenzo-18-crown-6, P(wedge)P = dcpm (3), dppm (4)], and their related crown-free complexes, [Au(2)(P(wedge)P)(SC(6)H(3)(OMe)(2)-3,4)(2)] [P(wedge)P = dcpm (5), dppm (6)], were synthesized. The low-energy emission of the mercaptocrown ether-containing gold(I) complexes are tentatively assigned as originated from states derived from a S --> Au ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition. The crown ether-containing gold(I) complexes showed specific binding abilities toward various metal cations according to the ring size of the crown pendants. Spectroscopic evidence was provided for the metal-ion-induced switching on of the gold...gold interactions upon the binding of particular metal ions in a sandwich binding mode.
Syntheses of Triangular Gold Complexes and Their Applications in Hydroamination Reaction

Abstract:Triangular all-metal complexes have aroused our research interest due to their unique structural and properties. Herein, through the facile reduction of mu(3)-oxo complex [mu(3)-O(PPh3Au)(3)]+BF4- (1), we synthesized and isolated the triphenylphosphine stabilized triangular tri-gold complex [(PPh3Au)(3)]+BF4- (2) for the first time (yield=90 %). Both complexes showed interesting photochemical sensitivity to temperatures and solvents. The cyclic voltammetry of these complexes showed one single oxidation process in CH3CN. These tri-gold complexes (2 mol % based on the complex itself) were further applied in the catalytic hydroaminations for substituted phenylacetylenes with anilines and gave the corresponding imine products with great catalytic reactivity and regioselectivity without aiding any promoters or additives. When the loading of the tri-gold complexes was decreased to 1.0 mol%, 95 % and 97 % of conversions were obtained using 1 and 2, respectively. When further decreased the catalyst loading to 0.5 mol% in preparative scale, 83 % and 80 % of isolated yields were achieved, respectively. This method presented great significance for the syntheses of a series of imine-containing pharmaceutical intermediates even in preparative scale. Moreover, the investigations of catalytic mechanisms of this reaction indicated that these tri-gold complexes played important roles as efficient pre-catalysts in hydroaminations.

Abstract:Decanuclear and pentanuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes of phenanthrene- and dibenzothiophene-based diphosphine ligands were synthesized and characterized. Unprecedented stimuli-induced reversible transformation between decanuclear and pentanuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes was observed, which could be readily monitored by NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy in solution. Remarkably, the decanuclear gold(I) sulfido complex (Au10-LPh) was found to show a highly reversible transformation process, which is stable for over 10 successive cycles in solution. The stimuli-induced reversible transformation behavior of the gold(I) sulfido complexes was found to depend on the P-P bite distance of the bidentate phosphine ligands.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of two dinuclear and five tetranuclear gold(I) complexes bearing the 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine diphosphane ligand (DPPMPY) are herein reported. The reaction between the dinuclear complexes, DPPMPY(AuCl)2 (1) or DPPMPY(AuBr)2 (2), with 1 or 2 equivalents of Ag salts yielded five tetranuclear gold(I) complexes, DPPMPY2Au4X2 (3-7), differing in the terminal ancillary ligands (X = Cl, Br, acetonitrile) and the counter ions (SbF6- or BF4-). The structures of complexes 1, 2, 3, and 5 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The Au⋯Au distances found in complexes 3 and 5 are in the range of aurophilic interactions and the arrangement of the Au atoms varies from a linear arrangement in complex 3 to a zigzag arrangement in complex 5. The photophysical characterization of the compounds was performed both in solution and in the solid state. Very high emission quantum yields were observed for the acetonitrile complexes 4 and 6 in the solid state. The use of this family of gold(I) complexes as catalysts for lactone synthesis via oxidative heteroarylation of alkenes was investigated and yields up to ca. 65% were obtained. Dicationic halide complexes 3 and 5 showed a slight enhancement of the yield of the catalytic reaction, indicating that there is no influence of the counter ion employed on the reaction outcome. Luminescence techniques have been also used to follow the progress of the catalytic reaction.

Abstract:Two gold (I) complexes 1 and 2 were designed, synthesized and structurally characterized by NMR, IR as well as elemental analysis. Fluorescence studies show that the two compounds exhibit very weak photoluminescence in pure organic solvents (dimethylsulfoxide or N,N-dimethyl formamide), enhanced fluorescences are observed after the addition of water, which indicate that the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics of these complexes. The solid-state fluorescence of complexes 1 and 2 can be significantly increased by grinding the solid samples. The recovery of the fluorescence intensity of these ground powders was detected after exposure the samples to organic solvent vapors. This phenomenon suggested the reversible mechanochromism behaviors of comounds 1 and 2. The powder X-ray diffracton (XRD) results displayed the morphology transition between the crystalline and amorphous states before and after the grinding of the sample. The AIE and reversible mechanochromism characteristics of complexes 1 and 2 made them can be potentially used for "smart" materials.
Origins of unique gold-catalysed chemo- and site-selective C-H functionalization of phenols with diazo compounds.

Abstract:In past decade, gold revealed more and more unique properties in carbene chemistry. It was disclosed in our recent communication (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 6904) that gold carbenes have unprecedented chemo- and site-selectivity and ligand effect toward the functionalization of C-H bonds in phenols. In this full article, we report a comprehensively combined theoretical and experimental study on the mechanism of the insertion of gold carbenes into C-H and O-H bonds in phenol. It significantly revealed that the ligands have an important effect on C-H insertion and the reaction proceeds through a pathway involving the formation of an enolate-like intermediate. Moreover, two water molecules serving as a proton shuttle are believed to be the key issue for achieving chemoselective C-H functionalization, which is strongly supported by the DFT calculations and control experiments. It is the first time that a clear explanation is given about the prominent catalysis of gold carbenes toward C-H functionalization based on a theoretical and experimental study.
Dinuclear gold(I) pseudohalogen complexes bridged by a ferrocenyl bisphosphine ligand: synthesis, structure, and reactivity toward isothiocyanate

Abstract:Ferrocenyl bisphosphine-bridged dinuclear gold(I) complexes containing CF 3 COO as a pseudohalogen ligand were synthesized from the corresponding halides using CF 3 COOAg. The sequential treatment of gold(I) trifluoroacetates with aqueous NaN 3 afforded the corresponding ferrocenyl bisphosphine-bridged dinuclear gold(I) azides. Isolated gold(I) pseudohalogen complexes were characterized through IR, NMR and X-ray crystallography. The characteristic IR absorption bands of ν(CO), ν(CF), and ν(N 3 ) were at 1690, 1190, and 2040 cm −1 , respectively, corresponding to the gold(I) trifluoroacetates and azides, verifying gold(I) pseudohalogen formation. The molecular structure of [Au 2 (η 1 -CF 3 CO 2 ) 2 (μ-dippf)] (dippf = 1,1'-bis(diisopropylphosphino)ferrocene) through X-ray diffraction showed intermolecular Au⋅⋅⋅Au interactions with close contacts between molecules. The crystallographic images illustrate the polymeric chain of bis(phosphino)ferrocenyl gold(I) formed via intermolecular Au⋅⋅⋅Au bonds and layered packing arrays. In contrast, the molecular structures of [Au 2 (η 1 -CF 3 CO 2 ) 2 (μ-dtbpf)] (dtbpf = 1,1'-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)ferrocene) and Au 2 (N 3 ) 2 (μ-dippf) showed intramolecular Au⋅⋅⋅Au aurophilic interactions, but the structures of [Au 2 (η 1 -CF 3 CO 2 ) 2 (μ-dcpf)] (dcpf = 1,1′-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ferrocene) and Au 2 (N 3 ) 2 (μ-dppf) revealed no direct interaction within the dinuclear gold(I) system. Gold(I) azides gradually react with isothiocyanates (allyl, ( S )-(+)-1-phenylethyl, and benzyl) to afford the corresponding gold(I) tetrazole-thiolates [Au 2 X 2 (μ-dippf)] or [Au 2 X 2 (μ-dtbpf)] (X = S[CN 4 (Y)]) (Y = allyl, ( S )-(+)-1-phenylethyl, and benzyl) via dipolar cycloaddition of the isothiocyanates into the Au-N 3 bond.

Abstract:We herein describe the use of a gold complex with a naphthalene-di-imide-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NDI-NHC) ligand, which was used as a photocatalyst for a variety of reactions. Due to the presence of the naphthalene moiety in the ligand, the complex can be used for the photogeneration of singlet oxygen, behaving as a photocatalyst in the endoperoxidation and peroxidation of cyclic and acyclic alkenes, and also in the selective oxidation of a simulant of sulfur mustard to its related nontoxic sulfoxide. The same complex was used as catalyst for two model oxidative C–C coupling reactions, namely, the coupling of aryldiazonium salts with alkynylsilanes and with mesitylene. These two catalytic reactions are a good indication that the (NDI-NHC)-Au(I) complex can behave as an effective dual metallophotoredox catalyst but with the particular feature that both the photosensitizer and the metal catalyst are contained in the same compound, thus constituting a very rare type of a “two-in-one” metallophotoredox catalyst. The participation of the Au(I)/Au(III) couple in the catalytic process was demonstrated by the isolation of a Au(III) complex, which was obtained via a self-photoactivated photoredox reaction.

Abstract:The control of excited states and related emissive properties of gold(III) complexes mainly depends on the modulation of intramolecular electronic interactions among gold(III) metal center, chelating ligands and/or peripheral groups. However, luminescent gold(III) systems based on intermolecular electronic interactions have never been explored. Here we report a series of proof-of-concept gold(III) exciplexes using a simple gold(III) complex, AuDPPy, as an electron acceptor. The emissive properties of gold(III) exciplexes can be regulated by combining AuDPPy with different donors. Inspiringly, these gold(III) exciplexes have donor-dependent emission mechanisms: dominant phosphorescence or dual radiative channels of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and phosphorescence. Consequently, these gold(III) exciplexes deliver green-to-red electroluminescence with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of up to 10.1%. More importantly, using these gold(III) exciplexes to host multi-resonance TADF emitters results in narrowband yellow, orange, and deep-red electroluminescence with high EQEs of 23.5%, 24.4%, and 27.4%, respectively, competitive to the highest values for gold(III) OLEDs in similar color gamut.
Catechol/o-Benzoquinone Exchange at Gold(III)

Abstract:Although gold(III) chemistry has tremendously progressed in the past 2 decades, gold(III) catecholate complexes remain extremely scarce and underdeveloped. Upon preparation and full characterization of P^C-cyclometalated gold(III) complexes, we serendipitously uncovered an intriguing catechol exchange process at gold(III). Electron-rich catecholates turned out to be readily displaced by electron-poor o-benzoquinones. DFT calculations revealed an original path for this transformation involving two consecutive Single Electron Transfer events between the catecholate and o-benzoquinone moieties while gold maintains its +III oxidation state. This catechol/o-benzoquinone exchange at gold(III) represents a new path for the exchange of X-type ligands at transition metals.

Abstract:Gold redox chemistry holds the promise of unique reactivities and selectivities that are different to other transition metals. Recent studies have utilized strain release, ligand design, and photochemistry to promote the otherwise sluggish oxidative addition to Au(I) complexes. More details on the reductive elimination from Au(III) complexes have also been revealed. These discoveries have facilitated the development of gold redox catalysis and will continue to offer mechanistic insight and inspiration for other transition metals. This review highlights how research in organometallic chemistry has led to gold redox catalysis, as well as applications in materials science, bioconjugation, and radiochemical synthesis.
