Abstract:The epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its receptor (ErbB) family have been shown to be involved in cell differentiation, proliferation and migration. EGF family members are expressed in the tear constantly and ErbB is expressed in ocular surface tissues. EGFR activation and subsequent intracellular signaling are required for corneal wound healing. They are important for the maintenance of the integrity of the ocular surface. The purpose of this review was to provide an overview of the role of EGF in the healing process of corneal epithelial cells after trauma.
