Abstract:When it was discovered in the 1970s as a ubiquitous protein, ubiquitin, a 76-aminoacid peptide, had no assigned function. It was not until later that ubiquitin was found to be a necessary cofactor in a vital cellular process: the degradation of proteins. Work by Avram Hershko, Aaron Ciechanover, and Irwin Rose (for which they received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry) showed that the covalent attachment of ubiquitin provide proteins with a tag that dispatches them to the proteasome, the main cell degradation machinery (Ciechanover 2012). Subsequent work, has revealed that ubiquitin belongs to a broader family of ubiquitin-like proteins that can modify not only protein stability, but also subcellular localization and function. In the following years, ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifiers were found to have a profound influence on all aspects of plant life. Indeed, about 6% of the plant genome encodes for ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like related components ( Vierstra 2009). The articles and reviews in this Special Issue of the Journal of Integrative Plant Biology provide an update on our knowledge of this protein modification system in plant biology. The canonical Ubiquitin-Proteasome System (UPS), in which proteins are first ubiquitinated and then degraded by the proteasome, has been involved in the regulation of almost all plant hormones, including auxin, gibberellin, ethylene, jasmonic acid and abscic acid. The UPS is also involved in the regulation of developmental processes such as photomorphogenesis, flowering time, self-incompatibility, gametogenesis and biotic/abiotic stress responses. Recently, an increasing amount of evidence has implicated the UPS in additional developmental processes, such as the regulation of meristem formation and maintenance (Di Giacomo et al. 2013). Further indications of the function of the UPS pathway in gametophytic and embryo development are provided in this issue by Wang and coauthors. These authors found a critical role of the anaphasepromoting complex/cyclosomesubunit 1 (APC1) in both female gametogenesis and embryogenesis in Arabidopsis (Wang et al. 2013). Previously the same group also found that four closely-related RING-type E3 ligases are involved in pollen mitosis II regulation (Luo et al. 2012).
