Abstract:Time-dependent wave packet method has been developed to calculate differential cross section for four-atom reactions in full dimension, utilizing an improved version of reactant-product-decoupling scheme. Differential cross sections for the title reaction were calculated for collision energy up to 0.4 eV. It is found that the differential cross sections for the reaction are all peaked in the backward direction. The majority of H(2)O is produced in the first stretch excited state, with a large fraction of available energy for the reaction going into H(2)O internal motion. As compared in a previous report by Xiao et al. [Science 333, 440 (2011)], the differential cross section at E(c) = 0.3 eV and the differential cross section at the backward direction as a function of collision energy agree with experiment very well, indicating it is possible now to calculate complete dynamical information for some simple four-atom reactions, as have been done for three-atom reactions in the past decades.

Abstract:Full quantum-state resolved differential cross-sections of the H*(n) + o-D2 → HD + D*(n′) reaction have been measured for the first time using the Rydberg H-atom time-of-flight method. Experimental results show that the angular distributions of HD product rotational states show a strong preference for forward scattering. This result is considerably different to that predicted by full quantum mechanical calculations on the corresponding ion–molecule reaction, suggesting that the ionic core and Rydberg electron coupling cannot be neglected in the Rydberg H-atom reactive scattering with D2 and, therefore, that the Fermi independent-collider model is not valid in describing the dynamics of Rydberg atom reactions with molecules.

Abstract:We present accurate differential and integral cross sections for the H + O2 --> OH + O reaction obtained on a newly developed ab initio potential energy surface using time-independent and time-dependent quantum mechanical methods. The product angular distributions near the reaction threshold show pronounced forward and backward peaks, reflecting the complex-forming mechanism. However, the asymmetry of these peaks suggests certain nonstatistical behaviors, presumably due to some relatively short-lived resonances. The integral cross section increases monotonically with the collision energy above a reaction threshold.

Abstract:The authors report accurate quantum mechanical studies of the O+OH reaction on the improved Xu-Xie-Zhang-Lin-Guo potential energy surface. The differential cross section was obtained at several energies near the reaction threshold using a time-independent method. The dominant forward and backward peaks in the angular distribution are consistent with a complex-forming mechanism, which is also confirmed by the extensive rotational excitation in the O2 product. However, the asymmetry of these peaks suggests a significant nonstatistical component. The initial state (upsilon i=0, j i=0) specified integral cross section, which was calculated up to 1.15 eV of collision energy using the Chebyshev wave packet method, shows no energy threshold and decreases with the increasing collision energy, consistent with the barrierless nature of the reaction. The resulting rate constant exhibits a negative temperature dependence for T>100 K and decays as the temperature is lowered, in qualitative agreement with available experimental data.

Abstract:Converged differential and integral cross sections are reported for the H + O2 --> OH + O reaction on an improved potential energy surface of HO2(X2A'') using a dynamically exact quantum wave packet method and Gaussian weighted quasi-classical trajectory method. The complex-forming mechanism is confirmed by strong forward and backward scattering peaks and by highly inverted OH rotational state distributions. Both the quantum and classical results provide strong evidence for nonstatistical behavior in this important reaction.

Abstract:The initial state selected time-dependent wave-packet method was extended to calculate the state-to-state integral cross section for the title reaction with H2O in the ground rovibrational state on the potential energy surface of Yang, Zhang, Collins, and Lee. One OH bond length was fixed in the study, which is justifiable for the abstraction reaction, but the remaining 5 degrees of freedom were treated exactly. It was found that the H-2 molecule is produced vibrationally cold for collision energy up to 1.6 eV. The OH rotation takes away about 4% of total available energy in the products, while the fraction of energy going to H-2 rotation increases with collision energy to about 20% at 1.6 eV.

Abstract:Accurate measurements of product state-resolved angular distributions are central to fundamental studies of chemical reaction dynamics. Yet, fine quantum-mechanical structures in product angular distributions of a reactive scattering process, such as the fast oscillations in the forward-scattering direction, have never been observed experimentally and the nature of these oscillations has not been fully explored. Here we report the crossed-molecular-beam experimental observation of these fast forward-scattering oscillations in the product angular distribution of the benchmark chemical reaction, H + HD → H 2 + D. Clear oscillatory structures are observed for the H 2 ( v ′ = 0, j ′ = 1, 3) product states at a collision energy of 1.35 eV, in excellent agreement with the quantum-mechanical dynamics calculations. Our analysis reveals that the oscillatory forward-scattering components are mainly contributed by the total angular momentum J around 28. The partial waves and impact parameters responsible for the forward scatterings are also determined from these observed oscillations, providing crucial dynamics information on the transient reaction process.
Fully Differential Cross Sections for Electron-Impact Excitation-Ionization of Alignedd2

Abstract:We examine fully differential cross sections for 176 eV electron-impact dissociative excitation-ionization of orientated D-2 for transitions to final ion states 2s sigma(g), 2p sigma(u), and 2p pi(u). In previous work [Phys. Rev. A 88, 062705 (2013)], we calculated these cross sections using the molecular four-body distorted wave (M4DW) method with the ground-state D-2 wave function being approximated by a product of two Dyson 1s-type orbitals. The theoretical results were compared with experimental measurements for five different orientations of the target molecule (four in the scattering plane and one perpendicular to the scattering plane). For the unresolved 2s sigma(g) + 2p pi(u) final states, good agreement with experiment was found for two of the five measured orientations, and for the 2p sigma(u) final state, good agreement was found for three of the five orientations. However, theory was a factor of 200 smaller than experiment for the 2p sigma(u) state. In this paper, we investigate the importance of the approximation for the molecular ground-state wave function by repeating the M4DW calculation using a better variational wave function for the ground state.

Abstract:We report quadruple differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of H2 with simultaneous excitation of the + H2 ion which will immediately dissociate. The alignment of the molecule is determined by detecting the emitted proton. The first measurements of this type were recently reported (2013 Phys. Rev. A 88 062705). Here we report measurements with much better angular resolution using the COLTRIMS method. Experimental results are compared with molecular 4-body distorted wave calculations and reasonably good agreement between experiment and theory is found.

Abstract:State-to-state differential and integral cross sections for the title reaction were calculated using an exact wave packet method on a recently developed ab initio potential energy surface of the first excited state HO(2)(Ã(2)A'). The calculation results indicate that the reaction is dominated by highly rotationally excited OH products scattered in both the forward and backward directions, consistent with the formation of a long-lived HO(2) reaction intermediate. However, a statistical model was found to overestimate the integral cross sections, due apparently to dynamical bottlenecks. In addition, a unique feature in the OH + O exit channel potential promotes rotational excitation of the departing OH product by exerting a torque force. The role of the title reaction in high temperature combustion is also discussed.
Differential Cross Sections for the H + H2S → H2 + SH Reaction: A Full-Dimensional State-to-State Quantum Dynamics Study.

Abstract:We utilized the time-dependent wave packet approach to compute the first full-dimensional (6D) state-to-state differential cross sections (DCSs) for the title reaction with the initial nonrotating H2S in the ground and the (100) and (001) vibrational excited states. It is found that the fundamental symmetric and asymmetric stretching excitations of H2S exhibit almost the same influence on the DCS, but unlike the H + H2O → H2 + OH reaction, they greatly increase the vibrational excitation of both the H2 and SH products. The hot vibrational state distributions of H2 are consistent with the prediction of product energy disposal by Polanyi's rules for an early barrier reaction. Because the incident H atom reacts strongly with both the ground and excited S-H states, the large populations of product SH(v2 = 1), which are very close to the relative reactivity of the initial S-H(v = 0) state, can still be explained by the local mode picture for H2S and the nonreacting SH bond's spectator nature.

Abstract:We present both experimental and theoretical results for the dissociative ionization of ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}$ molecules induced by electron impact. Cross sections are determined in the molecular frame and are fully differential in the energies and emission angles of the dissociation fragments. Transitions are considered from the $X$${}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{g}{}^{+}$ electronic ground state of D${}_{2}$ to the $2s{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{g}$, $2p{\ensuremath{\pi}}_{u}$ and $2p{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{u}$ excited states of D${}_{2}{}^{+}$. The experimental results are compared to calculations performed within the molecular four-body distorted-wave framework to describe the multicenter nature of the scattering process. The cross sections reveal a dramatic dependence on both the alignment of the internuclear axis with respect to the direction of the projectile momentum and on the symmetry of the excited dissociating state which is energetically resolved.

Abstract:Using the time-dependent wave-packet approach, we calculate the first fully converged state-to-state differential cross-sections for the H + HOD(vOH = 1-4) → H2 + OD reactions on a highly accurate neural network PES. It is found that, unlike the loss of memory effect observed in the product distributions for low vibrational excitation reactions, high initial OH vibrational excitation significantly influences not only the product vibrational distribution but also the angular distribution. Furthermore, for the H + HOD(vOH = 3,4) reactions, the total integral cross-sections maintain the pronounced oscillatory structures in the J = 0 probabilities at low collision energies, which originate from the prereactive van der Waals resonances. Notably, the product angular distributions exhibit forward-backward peaked behavior at these energies, akin to those observed in the complex-forming system with deep potential wells. This is attributed to the much longer lifetimes of these resonances compared to those of conventional transition state resonances.

The experiments were performed using an advanced reaction microscope specially built for electron-impact ionization studies. Abstract:We have recently examined electron-impact ionization of molecules that have one large atom at the center, surrounded by H nuclei (H2O, NH3, CH4). All of these molecules have ten electrons; however, they vary in their molecular symmetry. We found that the triple-differential cross sections (TDCSs) for the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) were similar, as was the character of the HOMO orbitals which had a p-type “peanut” shape. In this work, we examine ethane (C2H6) which is a molecule that has two large atoms surrounded by H nuclei, so that its HOMO has a double-peanut shape. The experiment was performed using a coplanar symmetric geometry (equal final-state energies and angles). We find the TDCS for ethane is similar to the single-center molecules at higher energies, and is similar to a diatomic molecule at lower energies.

Abstract:A combined experimental-theoretical study is performed to advance our understanding of the dynamics of the prototypical tetra-atom, complex-forming reaction OH + CO → H + CO2, which is also of great practical relevance in combustion, Earth's atmosphere, and, potentially, Mars's atmosphere and interstellar chemistry. New crossed molecular beam experiments with mass spectrometric detection are analyzed together with the results from previous experiments and compared with quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations on a new, full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES). Comparisons between experiment and theory are carried out both in the center-of-mass and laboratory frames. Good agreement is found between experiment and theory, both for product angular and translational energy distributions, leading to the conclusion that the new PES is the most accurate at present in elucidating the dynamics of this fundamental reaction. Yet, small deviations between experiment and theory remain and are presumably attributable to the QCT treatment of the scattering dynamics.

Abstract:Experimental and theoretical triple differential cross sections for intermediate-energy (250 eV) electron-impact single ionization of the CO2 are presented for three fixed projectile scattering angles. Results are presented for ionization of the outermost 1 pi(g) molecular orbital of CO2 in a coplanar asymmetric geometry. The experimental data are compared to predictions from the three-center Coulomb continuum approximation for triatomic targets, and the molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) model. It is observed that while both theories are in reasonable qualitative agreement with experiment, the M3DW is in the best overall agreement with experiment.

Abstract:We present new experimental and theoretical cross sections for electron-impact single ionization of Xe and Xe ions, and double ionization of Xe , Xe and Xe ions for collision energies from the respective ionization thresholds up to 3500 eV. The calculations use the fully relativistic subconfiguration-averaged distorted-wave approach and, partly, the more detailed level-to-level distorted wave method. We find that, unlike in previous work, our theoretical cross sections agree with our experimental ones within the experimental uncertainties, except for the near-threshold double-ionization cross sections. We attribute this remaining discrepancy to the neglect of direct-double ionization in the present theoretical treatment.

Quantum Wavepacket Method for State-to-state Reactive Cross Sections in Hyperspherical Coordinates

Abstract:We present theory for calculating state-to-state differential cross sections (DCS) of triatomic reactive scattering in hyperspherical coordinates using a quantum wavepacket method. The adiabatically adjusting, principal axes hyperspherical coordinates proposed by Pack and Parker [J. Chem. Phys. 87, 3888 (1987)] are applied, which deal with all arrangement channels equivalently, allowing the analysis of the products in all three arrangement channels with one main propagation. The propagated wavepacket is analyzed by projecting it onto the product ro-vibrational states at a fixed, asymptotic radius, R, of the corresponding Jacobi coordinates; thus, the channel-specified S-matrix elements can be calculated by matching the projections with the boundary conditions in the Jacobi coordinates. For numerical demonstrations, state-to-state DCS of the H + HD (v0 = 0, j0 = 0) reaction and state-to-state reaction probabilities of the O + O2 (v0 = 0, j0 = 0) reaction and the F + HCl (v0 = 0, j0 = 0) → HF + Cl reaction for zero total angular momentum are presented. The second order split operator method and the Chebyshev polynomial expansion method were applied to propagate the wavefunction. The relative numerical efficiencies for calculating the state-to-state information of triatomic reactive scattering using the hyperspherical coordinate and the reactant Jacobi coordinate are discussed.

Abstract:The authors report a detailed quantum mechanical study of the state-to-state dynamics of the O+OH(vi=0, ji=0)→H+O2(vf,jf) reaction on an accurate HO2(X2A″) potential energy surface. The scattering dynamics was treated using a reactant coordinate based Chebyshev real wavepacket method with full Coriolis coupling. A total of 84 partial waves were calculated in order to achieve convergence up to the collision energy of 0.17 eV. The differential cross section is near forward-backward symmetric, consistent with the complex-forming mechanism. The O2 product was found to have a monotonically decaying vibrational distribution and highly excited and inverted rotational distributions, also consistent with the formation of the HO2 intermediate. These quantum mechanical results were compared with those obtained in earlier quasiclassical trajectory and statistical studies and it is shown that the statistical theory gives a reasonably good description of the product state distributions despite its inability to predict the total reaction cross section.
