Remarks On Hyperbolic Relaxation Systems

Abstract:This talk is concerned with basic structural properties on hyperbolic relaxation systems. One of the main conclusions is that non-(strongly) hyperbolic conservation laws do not admit linearly stable (in the sense of Lax-Richtmyer) relaxation approximations. Moreover, we point out that the stability of a relaxation system cannot be judged merely by the dissipative-ness of its modified equation resulting from the classical Chapman-Enskog expansion. In addition, a similar non-existence remark is made for hyperbolic initial-boundary-value problems which are not well-posed in the sense of Kreiss.

Abstract:When a hot system cools down faster than an equivalent cold one, it exhibits the Mpemba Effect. This counterintuitive phenomenon was observed in several systems including water, magnetic alloys and polymers. In most experiments the system is coupled to the bath through its boundaries, but all theories so far assumed bulk coupling. Here we build a general framework for boundary coupling relaxation and show that the Mpemba effect persists in these cases. Surprisingly, it can survive even an arbitrarily weak couplings. An example is given in the Ising antiferromagnetic chain.

Abstract:Douskos & Markellos (2006, A&A, 446, 357) first reported the existence of the out-of-plane equilibrium points in restricted three-body problem with oblateness. This result deviates significantly from the intuitive physical point of view that there is no other force that can balance the combined gravitation in Z direction. In fact, the out-of-plane equilibrium in that model is illusory and we prove here that such equilibrium points arise from the improper application of the potential function.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Phys. Rev. E 67, 012201 (2003)] proposed a new interpretation of the collective dynamics in liquid metals and, in particular, of the relaxation mechanisms ruling density fluctuations propagation. At variance with both the predictions of the current literature and the results of recent inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, ST associate the quasielastic component of the S (Q,omega ) to the thermal relaxation, as it holds in ordinary adiabatic hydrodynamics valid for nonconductive liquids and in the Q-->0 limit. We show here that this interpretation leads to a nonphysical behavior of different thermodynamic and transport parameters.

Abstract:Y. Gossuin et al. in their Comment on "Structure-Correlated Magnetic Resonance Transverse Relaxivity Enhancement in Superparamagnetic Ensembles with Complex Anisotropy Landscape" [ Langmuir 2023, DOI: 10.1021/acs.langmuir.2c03428] put forward certain concerns about the proposed relaxation dependency hypothesis described in our work [ Langmuir 2022, 38 (36), 11087-11098.]. In this reply to their comment, we would like to express the justification of our considered hypothesis in the complex geometry of nanosystems in order to overcome the raised concerns of MR-relaxivity dependency on such complex landscape of anisotropy.

Abstract:To date,there is no consensus as to whether the sediment angle of overwater repose is bigger than that in submarine condition,whether the angle of repose increases with the increase of sorting coefficientηof non-uniform sediment,and whether the angle of repose equals to that of surface friction of sediment.Experiments were carried out with cohesionless heavy sediment on angle of repose with the natural accumulation method and angle of surface fric-tion with the tilting method.The results show that the angle of overwater repose is bigger than that in submarine con-dition,and the angle of repose does not increase with the increasing of sorting coefficient monotonously but with the decreasing of asymmetry coefficient S of non-uniform sediment within the same median diameter D50.It is also shown that the physical pictures of the angle of repose and the angle of the surface friction are quite different and the differ-ence value is noticeable,which is ignored by most textbooks related to river dynamics and aeolian physics.
