Abstract:Coupled oscillators can serve as a testbed for larger questions of pattern formation across many areas of science and engineering. Much effort has been dedicated to the Kuramoto model and phase oscillators, but less has focused on oscillators with variable amplitudes. Here we examine the simplest such oscillators -- Stuart-Landau oscillators -- and attempt to elucidate some puzzling dynamics observed in simulation by us and others. We demonstrate the existence and stability of a previously unreported state which we call a ``phase chimera state.'' Remarkably, in this state, the amplitudes of all oscillators are identical, but one subset of oscillators phase-locks while another subset remains incoherent in phase. We also show that this state can take the form of a ``multitailed phase chimera state'' where a single phase-synchronous cluster of oscillators coexists with multiple groups of phase-incoherent oscillators.

Phase Wave in a Cellular Structure

Abstract:Phase waves and their stability in a cellular pattern is discussed from a viewpoint of experimentalists. When the cellular pattern exhibits oscillatory instability, rich phenomena can be observed. The prototype experimental system is the electrohydrodynamic convection of a nematic liquid crystal in which a two-dimensional cellular pattern of convection exhibits limit cycle oscillation. We observe localized target pattern of wave fronts emitted from a self-organized center. The localized structure has a life cycle: it arises from a uniform state, grows and collapses by nucleating defects at its center. They are created by a phase instability through the coupling between the oscillatory mode and the underlying cellular pattern. We experimentally determine coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations as well as phase equations derived from them, and we confirm that the equations quantitatively describe the instability. We also discussed mechanism and process of collapse of target which are closely related to a turbulent nature of defects in the cellular pattern.
Phase synchronization in small-world networks of chaotic oscillators

Abstract:Small-world networks are highly clustered networks with small average distance among the vertices. There are many natural and technological networks that present this kind of connections. We study the phase synchronization of small-world chaotic oscillator networks in this paper. We find that for Rössler oscillator networks, in the synchronous regime, the oscillation phases are locked, while the amplitudes vary chaotically. We further show the dependence of phase synchronization on the network coupling strength, the product of the shortcuts-adding probability and the number of chaotic oscillators, as well as the maximal frequency mismatch.

Abstract:Systems of dynamical elements exhibiting spontaneous rhythms are found in various fields of science and engineering, including physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, and mechanical and electrical engineering. Such dynamical elements are often modeled as nonlinear limit-cycle oscillators. In this article, we briefly review phase reduction theory, which is a simple and powerful method for analyzing the synchronization properties of limit-cycle oscillators exhibiting rhythmic dynamics. Through phase reduction theory, we can systematically simplify the nonlinear multi-dimensional differential equations describing a limit-cycle oscillator to a one-dimensional phase equation, which is much easier to analyze. Classical applications of this theory, i.e., the phase locking of an oscillator to a periodic external forcing and the mutual synchronization of interacting oscillators, are explained. Further, more recent applications of this theory to the synchronization of non-interacting oscillators induced by common noise and the dynamics of coupled oscillators on complex networks are discussed. We also comment on some recent advances in phase reduction theory for noise-driven oscillators and rhythmic spatiotemporal patterns.

Abstract:The appearance of transient ordered phases in phase separating processes is discussed in terms of thermodynamics and illustrated by a computer simulation. It is revealed that during decomposition of a binary homogeneous disordered phase into a mixture of ordered and disordered phases, a transient ordered phase may appear which has a different structure type than that of the equilibrium ones. Abstract:An ensemble of uncoupled limit-cycle oscillators receiving common Poisson impulses shows a range of non-trivial behavior, from synchronization, desynchronization, to clustering. The group behavior that arises in the ensemble can be predicted from the phase response of a single oscillator to a given impulsive perturbation. We present a theory based on phase reduction of a jump stochastic process describing a Poisson-driven limit-cycle oscillator, and verify the results through numerical simula- tions and electric circuit experiments. We also give a geometrical interpretation of the synchronizing mechanism, a perturbative expansion to the stationary phase distribution, and the diffusion limit of our jump stochastic model.

Abstract:We design a system of phase oscillators that is able to produce temporally periodic sequences of patterns. Patterns are cluster partitions which encode information as phase differences between phase oscillators. The architecture of our system consists of a retrieval network with N globally coupled phase oscillators, a pacemaker that controls the sequence retrieval, and a set of patterns stored in the couplings between the pacemaker and the retrieval network. The system performs in analogy to a central pattern generator of neural networks and is very robust against perturbations in the retrieval process.

Higher-Order Network Interactions through Phase Reduction for Oscillators with Phase-Dependent Amplitude

Abstract:Coupled oscillator networks provide mathematical models for interacting periodic processes. If the coupling is weak, phase reduction -- the reduction of the dynamics onto an invariant torus -- captures the emergence of collective dynamical phenomena, such as synchronization. While a first-order approximation of the dynamics on the torus may be appropriate in some situations, higher-order phase reductions become necessary, for example, when the coupling strength increases. However, these are generally hard to compute and thus they have only been derived in special cases: This includes globally coupled Stuart--Landau oscillators, where the limit cycle of the uncoupled nonlinear oscillator is circular as the amplitude is independent of the phase. We go beyond this restriction and derive second-order phase reductions for coupled oscillators for arbitrary networks of coupled nonlinear oscillators with phase-dependent amplitude, a scenario more reminiscent of real-world oscillations. We analyze how the deformation of the limit cycle affects the stability of important dynamical states, such as full synchrony and splay states. By identifying higher-order phase interaction terms with hyperedges of a hypergraph, we obtain natural classes of coupled phase oscillator dynamics on hypergraphs that adequately capture the dynamics of coupled limit cycle oscillators.

Topological phase locking in molecular oscillators

Abstract:The dynamics of molecular-scale enzymes and molecular motors are activated by thermal noise, and driven out-of-equilibrium by local energy dissipation. Because the energies dissipated in these systems are comparable to the thermal energy, one would generally expect their dynamics to be highly stochastic. Here, by studying a thermodynamically-consistent model of two coupled noise-activated oscillators, we show that this is not always the case. Thanks to a novel phenomenon that we term topological phase locking (TPL), the coupled dynamics become quasi-deterministic, resulting in a greatly enhanced average speed of the oscillators. TPL is characterized by the emergence of a band of periodic orbits that form a torus knot in phase space, along which the two oscillators advance in rational multiples of each other. The effectively conservative dynamics along this band coexists with the basin of attraction of the dissipative fixed point. We further show that TPL arises as a result of a complex, infinite hierarchy of global bifurcations. Our results have implications for understanding the dynamics of a wide range of systems, from biological enzymes and molecular motors to engineered nanoscale electronic, optical, or mechanical oscillators.

Here we show that non-reciprocity leads to time-dependent phases in which spontaneously broken continuous symmetries are dynamically restored. We illustrate this mechanism with simple robotic demonstrations. The resulting phase transitions are controlled by spectral singularities called exceptional points<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03375-9#ref-CR21">21</a>. We describe the emergence of these phases using insights from bifurcation theory<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03375-9#ref-CR22">22</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03375-9#ref-CR23">23</a> and non-Hermitian quantum mechanics<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03375-9#ref-CR24">24</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03375-9#ref-CR25">25</a>. Our approach captures non-reciprocal generalizations of three archetypal classes of self-organization out of equilibrium: synchronization, flocking and pattern formation. Collective phenomena in these systems range from active time-(quasi)crystals to exceptional-point-enforced pattern formation and hysteresis. Our work lays the foundation for a general theory of critical phenomena in systems whose dynamics is not governed by an optimization principle.

Abstract:The slow dynamics of nearly stationary patterns in a FitzHugh-Nagumo model are studied using a phase dynamics approach. A Cross-Newell phase equation describing slow and weak modulations of periodic stationary solutions is derived. The derivation applies to the bistable, excitable, and the Turing unstable regimes. In the bistable case stability thresholds are obtained for the Eckhaus and the zigzag instabilities and for the transition to traveling waves. Neutral stability curves demonstrate the destabilization of stationary planar patterns at low wavenumbers to zigzag and traveling modes. Numerical solutions of the model system support the theoretical findings.

Abstract:A large part of biological collective behaviors involves motional formation patterns like migration, vortex, aggregation, etc., in three-dimensional space, but the phase transition principles among these patterns still remain a dilemma. In this letter, by tweaking the vision range of the particles in a minimal collective motion model, phase transitions are observed among gas-like, crystal-like, and liquid-sphere–like patterns. Significantly, the increase of noise magnitudes will destroy the moving direction synchronization of gas-like and crystal-like phases, but not the liquid-sphere–like phase. By contrast, three sub-phases of migration liquid-sphere, vortex liquid-sphere and aggregation liquid-sphere emerge by slightly increasing noise magnitudes. This study sheds some light onto the forming mechanisms of 3D motional patterns of abundant biological groups. These insights could be expected to enable tuning the collective motional formations of multi-unmanned systems or robots by simply tweaking a few dynamical parameters as well.

Abstract:Instability is the main challenge in simulating dynamic phase transitions. For a van der Waals fluid, we introduce low order dissipative mechanisms with discrete Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) models, including a relaxation model. In one and higher space dimensions, numerical results demonstrate the complexities of dynamics. While eventually a good separation of phases is reached, interesting wave patterns are observed at an earlier stage.
Phase synchronization between collective rhythms of globally coupled oscillator groups: noisy identical case

Abstract:We theoretically investigate collective phase synchronization between interacting groups of globally coupled noisy identical phase oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Using the phase reduction method, we derive coupled collective phase equations describing the macroscopic rhythms of the groups from microscopic Langevin phase equations of the individual oscillators via nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations. For sinusoidal microscopic coupling, we determine the type of the collective phase coupling function, i.e., whether the groups exhibit in-phase or anti-phase synchronization. We show that the macroscopic rhythms can exhibit effective anti-phase synchronization even if the microscopic phase coupling between the groups is in-phase, and vice versa. Moreover, near the onset of collective oscillations, we analytically obtain the collective phase coupling function using center-manifold and phase reductions of the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations.

Insights into oscillator network dynamics using a phase-isostable framework

Abstract:Networks of coupled nonlinear oscillators can display a wide range of emergent behaviours under variation of the strength of the coupling. Network equations for pairs of coupled oscillators where the dynamics of each node is described by the evolution of its phase and slowest decaying isostable coordinate have previously been shown to capture bifurcations and dynamics of the network which cannot be explained through standard phase reduction. An alternative framework using isostable coordinates to obtain higher-order phase reductions has also demonstrated a similar descriptive ability for two oscillators. In this work we consider the phase-isostable network equations for an arbitrary but finite number of identical coupled oscillators, obtaining conditions required for stability of phase-locked states including synchrony. For the mean-field complex Ginzburg-Landau equation where the solutions of the full system are known, we compare the accuracy of the phase-isostable network equations and higher-order phase reductions in capturing bifurcations of phase-locked states. We find the former to be the more accurate and therefore employ this to investigate the dynamics of globally linearly coupled networks of Morris-Lecar neuron models (both two and many nodes). We observe qualitative correspondence between results from numerical simulations of the full system and the phase-isostable description demonstrating that in both small and large networks the phase-isostable framework is able to capture dynamics that the first-order phase description cannot.

Pattern formation in a four-ring reaction-diffusion network with heterogeneity

Abstract:In networks of nonlinear oscillators, symmetries place hard constraints on the system that can be exploited to predict universal dynamical features and steady states, providing a rare generic organizing principle for far-from-equilibrium systems. However, the robustness of this class of theories to symmetry-disrupting imperfections is untested in free-running (i.e., non-computer-controlled) systems. Here, we develop a model experimental reaction-diffusion network of chemical oscillators to test applications of the theory of dynamical systems with symmeries in the context of self-organizing systems relevant to biology and soft robotics. The network is a ring of four microreactors containing the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction coupled to nearest neighbors via diffusion. Assuming homogeneity across the oscillators, theory predicts four categories of stable spatiotemporal phase-locked periodic states and four categories of invariant manifolds that guide and structure transitions between phase-locked states. In our experiments, we observed that three of the four phase-locked states were displaced from their idealized positions and, in the ensemble of measurements, appeared as clusters of different shapes and sizes, and that one of the predicted states was absent. We also observed the predicted symmetry-derived synchronous clustered transients that occur when the dynamical trajectories coincide with invariant manifolds. Quantitative agreement between experiment and numerical simulations is found by accounting for the small amount of experimentally determined heterogeneity in intrinsic frequency. We further elucidate how different patterns of heterogeneity impact each attractor differently through a bifurcation analysis. We show that examining bifurcations along invariant manifolds provides a general framework for developing intuition about how chemical-specific dynamics interact with topology in the presence of heterogeneity that can be applied to other oscillators in other topologies.

Abstract:We generalize our recent approach to reconstruction of phase dynamics of coupled oscillators from data [B. Kralemann et al., Phys. Rev. E, 77, 066205 (2008)] to cover the case of small networks of coupled periodic units. Starting from the multivariate time series, we first reconstruct genuine phases and then obtain the coupling functions in terms of these phases. The partial norms of these coupling functions quantify directed coupling between oscillators. We illustrate the method by different network motifs for three coupled oscillators and for random networks of five and nine units. We also discuss nonlinear effects in coupling.

Abstract:A one-dimensional array of 2N + 1 automata with FitzHugh-Nagumo dynamics, in which one is set to be oscillatory and the others are excitable, is investigated with bi-directional interactions. We find that 1: 1 rhythm propagation in the array depends on the appropriate couple strenght and the excitability of the system. On pacemaker i.e. phase-locking phenomena and canard-like phenomena, are shown. The latter is found in company with chaotic pattern and period doubling bifurication. When the coupling strenght is larger than a critical value, the whole systems to a steady state.
Oscillatory networks: Insights from piecewise-linear modeling

Abstract:There is enormous interest -- both mathematically and in diverse applications -- in understanding the dynamics of coupled oscillator networks. The real-world motivation of such networks arises from studies of the brain, the heart, ecology, and more. It is common to describe the rich emergent behavior in these systems in terms of complex patterns of network activity that reflect both the connectivity and the nonlinear dynamics of the network components. Such behavior is often organized around phase-locked periodic states and their instabilities. However, the explicit calculation of periodic orbits in nonlinear systems (even in low dimensions) is notoriously hard, so network-level insights often require the numerical construction of some underlying periodic component. In this paper, we review powerful techniques for studying coupled oscillator networks. We discuss phase reductions, phase-amplitude reductions, and the master stability function for smooth dynamical systems. We then focus in particular on the augmentation of these methods to analyze piecewise-linear systems, for which one can readily construct periodic orbits. This yields useful insights into network behavior, but the cost is that one needs to study nonsmooth dynamical systems. The study of nonsmooth systems is well-developed when focusing on the interacting units (i.e., at the node level) of a system, and we give a detailed presentation of how to use \textit{saltation operators}, which can treat the propagation of perturbations through switching manifolds, to understand dynamics and bifurcations at the network level. We illustrate this merger of tools and techniques from network science and nonsmooth dynamical systems with applications to neural systems, cardiac systems, networks of electro-mechanical oscillators, and cooperation in cattle herds.
