Abstract:For a critical examination of the dielectric continuum model as applied to a superlattice, we have introduced a microscopic model, which takes proper account of the long-range Coulomb interaction and yet permits easy solution for the long-wavelength LO and TO modes. With this model, it is shown that such long-wavelength modes approach different limits depending on directions of propagation relative to the axis of the superlattice. This demonstrates that to treat the confined bulklike modes in superlattices as modes of isolated slabs is inadequate.

Abstract:The so-called hydrodynamic (HD) model on optical-phonon modes in superlattices is critically examined. Contrary to the HD model, a comparison between TM polaritons and the Fuchs-Kliewer-type interface modes has shown that the Fuchs-Kliewer interface modes do possess Frohlich potentials.

Abstract:The possibility of realizing lattice analogs of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, so-called fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), in nearly flat topological (Chern) bands has attracted a lot of recent interest. Here, we make the connection between Abelian as well as non-Abelian FQH states and FCIs more precise. Using a gauge-fixed version of Qi's Wannier basis representation of a Chern band, we demonstrate that the interpolation between several FCI states, obtained by short-range lattice interactions in a spin-orbit-coupled kagome lattice model, and the corresponding continuum FQH states is smooth: the gap remains approximately constant and extrapolates to a finite value in the thermodynamic limit, while the low-lying part of the orbital entanglement spectrum remains qualitatively unaltered. The orbital entanglement spectra also provide a first glimpse of the edge physics of FCIs via the bulk-boundary correspondence. Corroborating these results, we find that the squared overlaps between the FCI and FQH ground states are as large as 98.7% for the 8-electron Laughlin state at v = 1/3 (consistent with an earlier study) and 97.8% for the 10-electron Moore-Read state at v = 1/2. For the bosonic analogs of these states, the adiabatic continuity is also shown to hold, albeit with somewhat smaller associated overlaps, etc. Although going between the Chern bands to the Landau-level problem is often smooth, we show that this is not always the case by considering fermions at filling fraction v = 4/5, where the interpolation between Hamiltonians describing the two systems results in a phase transition. Abstract:Based on the variational principle, we derive the balance equation for momentum, Maxwell equation, and the equation of director fields for nonlinear electro-opto-mechanical coupling in dielectric liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Further, we establish a simple constitutive model to study the electric-field-induced director reorientation with the deformation of monodomain nematic LCEs, which is called the solid Freedericksz transition (SFT). Semi-analytical method is utilized to obtain the solutions of stress-free homogeneous SFT. The results indicate that the semi-soft elasticity of LCEs is insufficient to simulate the supercritical SFT of samples, as observed in earlier reported experiments. A modification of the semi-soft elastic energy of LCEs is proposed to change the subcritical character of the SFT to supercritical. In addition to the semi-analytical methods, finite element method is employed to simulate the experiments in which samples are immersed in dielectric liquids. Abstract:In the last years ample experimental evidence has shown that charge carriers in high-temperature superconductors are strongly correlated but also coupled with lattice vibrations (phonons), signaling that the true origin of high-Tc superconductivity can only be found in a proper combination of Coulomb and electron-phonon interactions. On this basis, we propose and study a model for high-Tc superconductivity, which accounts for realistic Coulomb repulsion, strong electron-phonon (Fröhlich) interaction and residual on-site (Hubbard \tilde{U}) correlations without any ad-hoc assumptions on their relative strength and interaction range. In the framework of this model, which exhibits a phase transition to a superconducting state with a critical temperature Tc well in excess of 100K, we emphasize the role of \tilde{U} as the driving parameter for a BEC/BCS crossover. Our model lays a microscopic foundation for the polaron-bipolaron theory of superconductivity. We argue that the high-Tc phenomenon originates in competing Coulomb and Fröhlich interactions beyond the conventional BCS description.

Coupled Optical Interface Modes in A Thue-Morse Dielectric Superlattice

Abstract:We study the coupled optical interface modes in a Thue Morse dielectric superlattice. Based on the electrostatic continuum approximation, which is correct in the long wavelength limit, the transfer matrix method is used to derive the analytic expressions for frequency spectra and electrostatic potential distributions. The numerical calculations show that the frequency spectra are singular continuous, and the potential profiles are mostly extended and lattice-like. The common features and pronounced differences with coupled optical interface modes in periodic and Fibonacci dielectric superlattices as well as with electrons and acoustic phonons in Thue Morse structures arc exposed. Furthermore, the possibility of experimental observation is discussed.
Optical-phonon Modes in Superlattices.

Abstract:We have studied optical-phonon modes associated with a finite wave vector parallel to the interfaces in a model superlattice in which the long-range Coulomb interactions are dealt with rigorously. Owing to the Coulomb interaction and the superlattice periodicity, for nonvanishing wave vector parallel to the interfaces, the modes are a hybrid of the longitudinal- and transverse-optical waves from the corresponding bulk materials. Compared to the bulklike mode with a weaker hybridization of the LO and TO waves, the so-called Coulomb mode (roughly corresponding to the interface mode in the dielectronic continuum model) exhibits stronger hybridization because of its dominant long-wavelength component. This distinguishes the Coulomb mode from the bulklike mode. The mode frequencies derived from the dielectric continuum model and the present microscopic model are essentially similar, provided the bulk phonons are dispersionless, but the vibrational wave functions calculated with the two models are different. When the dispersion of the bulk phonons is taken into account, the Coulomb modes obtained from the microscopic model lose the characteristics predicted by the dielectric continuum model.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenide superlattices provide an exciting new platform for exploring and understanding a variety of phases of matter. The moiré continuum Hamiltonian, of two-dimensional jellium in a modulating potential, provides a fundamental model for such systems. Accurate computations with this model are essential for interpreting experimental observations and making predictions for future explorations. In this work, we combine two complementary quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods, phaseless auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo and fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo, to study the ground state of this Hamiltonian. We observe a metal-insulator transition between a paramagnet and a 120° Néel ordered state as the moiré potential depth and the interaction strength are varied. We find significant differences from existing results by Hartree-Fock and exact diagonalization studies. The dielectric impact of layer distances on exciton and trion binding energies in van der Waals heterostructures

Abstract:The electronic and optical properties of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and van der Waals heterostructures are strongly subject to their dielectric environment. In each layer the field lines of the Coulomb interaction are screened by the adjacent material, which reduces the single-particle band gap as well as exciton and trion binding energies. By combining an electrostatic model for a dielectric hetero-multi-layered environment with semiconductor many-particle methods, we demonstrate that the electronic and optical properties are sensitive to the interlayer distances on the atomic scale. Spectroscopical measurements in combination with a direct solution of a three-particle Schrödinger equation reveal trion binding energies that correctly predict recently measured interlayer distances.

Continuum theory of electrostatic-elastic coupling interactions in colloidal crystals

Abstract:Electrostatic-elastic coupling in colloidal crystals, composed of a mobile Coulomb gas permeating a fixed background crystalline lattice of charged colloids, is studied on the continuum level in order to analyze the lattice-mediated interactions between mobile charges. The linearized, Debye-H\" uckel-like mean-field equations allow for an analytic solution incorporating the minimal coupling between electrostatic and displacement fields leading to an additional effective attractive interaction between mobile charges. For small screening lengths, the interactions between mobile like charges exhibit a coupling-strength-dependent behavior, with lattice mediated effective interaction ranging from weak to strong attraction, while for large screening lengths the lattice mediated interaction remains purely attractive. By analyzing Gaussian fluctuations around the mean-field solution we identify its region of stability in terms of the electrostatic-elastic screening length. A detailed continuum theory incorporating the standard lattice elasticity and electrostatics of mobile charges augmented by the electrostatic-elastic coupling terms can serve as a baseline for more detailed microscopic models.

Superfluidity of Fermions with Repulsive On-Site Interaction in an Anisotropic Optical Lattice Near A Feshbach Resonance

Abstract:We present a numerical study on ground state properties of a one-dimensional (1D) general Hubbard model (GHM) with particle-assisted tunnelling rates and repulsive on-site interaction (positive-U), which describes fermionic atoms in an anisotropic optical lattice near a wide Feshbach resonance. For our calculation, we utilize the time evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm, which is an extension of the density matrix renormalization group and provides a well-controlled method for 1D systems. We show that the positive-U GHM, when hole-doped from half-filling, exhibits a phase with coexistence of quasi-long-range superfluid and charge-density-wave orders. This feature is different from the property of the conventional Hubbard model with positive-U, indicating the particle-assisted tunnelling mechanism in GHM brings in qualitatively new physics.

Abstract:A ferroelectric superlattice consisting of two ferroelectric materials is investigated based on the transverse Ising model. We study the effects of long-range coupling interactions on the spontaneous polarization, the Curie temperature, and the dielectric susceptibility of the ferroelectric superlattice. We find that with the increase of the interaction range, the spontaneous polarization as well as the Curie temperature increase, and two peaks in dielectric susceptibility become only one gradually. This indicates that the ferroelectric superlattice tends to form a single artificial material.

Abstract:A simple analytical description of electron-optic-phonon coupling in cylindrical GaAs/AlAs quantum wires is presented and electron transport in these systems is studied. In the in-line wave vector range of interest to Fröhlich interaction, the confined phonon modes of this model are almost the same as those from the recently developed hybridization theory. Confined phonon limited electron mobility calculated from two models are found to be the same. Finally, transport criterion for judging whether or not independent interface phonon modes exist is suggested.
Discrete-to-Continuum Limits of Long-Range Electrical Interactions in Nanostructures

Abstract:We consider electrostatic interactions in two classes of nanostructures embedded in a three dimensional space: (1) helical nanotubes, and (2) thin films with uniform bending (i.e., constant mean curvature). Starting from the atomic scale with a discrete distribution of dipoles, we obtain the continuum limit of the electrostatic energy; the continuum energy depends on the geometric parameters that define the nanostructure, such as the pitch and twist of the helical nanotubes and the curvature of the thin film. We find that the limiting energy is local in nature. This can be rationalized by noticing that the decay of the dipole kernel is sufficiently fast when the lattice sums run over one and two dimensions, and is also consistent with prior work on dimension reduction of continuum micromagnetic bodies to the thin film limit. However, an interesting contrast between the discrete-to-continuum approach and the continuum dimension reduction approaches is that the limit energy in the latter depends only on the normal component of the dipole field, whereas in the discrete-to-continuum approach, both tangential and normal components of the dipole field contribute to the limit energy.
