Abstract:We present a theoretical framework for calculating Andreev scattering rates in superconductors and superfluid 3He. The theory is applied to Andreev scattering at diffusely scattering surfaces of 3He, and representative results are given for the energy-dependent scattering rates.

Abstract:The mobility of the Wigner solid on the superfluid $^3$He is determined by the momentum transfer from the scattered $^3$He quasiparticles at the free surface. The scattering process of the quasiparticles is classified into the normal reflection and the Andreev retroreflection. Since the quasiparticles nearly conserve the momentum in the process of the Andreev retroreflection at the free surface, the Andreev reflected quasiparticles do not produce a resistive force to the Wigner solid. In this report, we have analytically calculated the contribution of the Andreev retroreflection to the mobility of the Wigner solid on superfluid $^3$He-B by employing a realistic model order parameter with the free surface. The Andreev retroreflection is lacked for quasiparticles with energy above the bulk energy gap under the model order parameter. Then, the Andreev retroreflection does not contribute to a rise in the mobility of the Wigner solid on the superfluid $^3$He-B. The present model calculation is in good agreement with the previous experimental observation. We have also discussed the Andreev retroreflection under a self-consistently calculated order parameter.

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of superfluid $^3$He imbibed in anisotropic aerogel reveal anomalous behavior at low temperatures. Although the frequency shift clearly identifies a low-temperature phase as the $B$ phase, the magnetic susceptibility does not display the expected decrease associated with the formation of the opposite-spin Cooper pairs. This susceptibility anomaly appears to be the predicted high-field behavior corresponding to the Ising-like magnetic character of surface Andreev bound states within the planar aerogel structures.

Abstract:We studied numerically the Andreev scattering cross-sections of three-dimensional isolated quantized vortex rings in superfluid 3He-B at ultra-low temperatures. We calculated the dependence of the cross-section on the ring's size and on the angle between the beam of incident thermal quasiparticle excitations and the direction of the ring's motion. We also introduced, and investigated numerically, the cross-section averaged over all possible orientations of the vortex ring; such a cross-section may be particularly relevant for the analysis of experimental data. We also analyzed the role of screening effects for Andreev reflection of quasiparticles by systems of vortex rings. Using the results obtained for isolated rings we found that the screening factor for a system of unlinked rings depends strongly on the average radius of the vortex ring, and that the screening effects increase with decreasing the rings' size.

Roughness of the surface is adjusted for best fit with experiment, and Andreev scattering is included as evaluated for the self-consistently calculated order parameter. The agreement between theory and experiment is good at high pressures, making use of an ad hoc strong coupling correction to the gap. At low pressures, where the weak coupling theory ought to be accurate, mismatch between theory and experiment is serious. It is speculated that a temperature-dependent roughness of surfaces at low pressures could explain the difficulties there.

Abstract:The effects of a rough surface on the tunneling density of states of 3He-B or of a possible p-wave superconductor are studied by solving numerically the quasiclassical equation. A thin-dirty-layer model is adopted to imitate the rough scattering of quasiparticles at the surface. The weak coupling version of the quasiclassical theory is used for simplicity. Some interesting features of the tunneling density of states in the bulk energy gap at different surface roughness are found and discussed.

Abstract:The order parameter and exchange field of superfluid He-3-B near magnetically active surfaces with perfect reflection are calculated using the quasiclassical theory and a magnetically scattering surface model. Our results show that an exchange field is usually induced in the vicinity of such surfaces due to the spin rotation of the impending quasiparticles, but for certain magnetic configuration of the surface, the order parameters are not depressed at all. This is in strong contrast to the situation near nonmagnetic surfaces where the perpendicular order parameter always vanishes due to the triplet pairing nature of the Cooper pair. We discuss the possible application of this property to identify the Cooper pair symmetry of other unconventional superconductors.

Abstract:The order parameter of superfluid $^{3}\mathit{B}$ is calculated near surfaces with the quasiclassical theory and a thin-dirty-layer surface-scattering model. The surface structures depend on the temperature, the surface roughness, the Fermi-liquid parameters, and the mass superflow tangential to the surface. All these are studied with special emphasis on the roughness and the superflow. A numerical technique of solving the quasiclassical equations is discussed.

Abstract:We report results of experiments with superfluid 3He confined in aerogels with parallel strands which lead to anisotropic scattering of 3He quasiparticles. We vary boundary conditions for the scattering by covering the strands by different numbers of atomic 4He layers and observe that the superfluid phase diagram and the nature of superfluid phases strongly depend on the coverage. We assume that the main reason of these phenomena is a magnetic channel of the scattering which becomes important at low coverages. Our results show that the magnetic channel also may be important in other Fermi systems with the triplet pairing.

Abstract:In contrast to almost all anisotropic superconductors, the upper critical field of URu2Si2 is larger when the field is oriented along the less conducting direction. We present a study of resistivity and Seebeck coefficient extended down to sub-Kelvin temperature range uncovering a singular case of anisotropy. When the current is injected along the c axis URu2Si2 behaves as a low-density Fermi liquid. When it flows along the a axis, even in presence of a large field, resistivity remains T-linear down to T-c and the Seebeck coefficient undergoes a sign change at very low temperatures. We conclude that the characteristic energy scale is anisotropic and vanishingly small in the basal plane.
Andreev Conductance in Disordered SF Junctions with Spin-Orbit Scattering

Abstract:We calculate the conductance of a junction between a disordered superconductor and a very strong half-metallic ferromagnet admitting electrons with only one spin projection. A usual mechanism of Andreev reflection is strongly suppressed in this case since Cooper pairs are composed of electrons with opposite spins. However, this obstacle can be overcome if we take into account spin-orbit scattering inside the superconductor. Spin-orbit scattering induces a fluctuational (zero on average) spin-triplet component of the superconducting condensate, which is enough to establish Andreev transport into a strong ferromagnet. This remarkably simple mechanism is quite versatile and can explain long-range triplet proximity effect in a number of experimental setups. One particular application of the suggested effect is to measure the spin-orbit scattering time in disordered superconducting materials. The value of Andreev conductance strongly depends on the parameter and can be noticeable even in very disordered but relatively light metals like granular aluminum.

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that the edge states of a quantum Hall sample can be coupled to a superconductor, so that incoming electrons in the edge states can be Andreev converted on the superconductor as coherent superpositions of an electron and a hole. In addition to this, single-electron emitters that operate in the gigahertz regime have been realized. Motivated by this remarkable experimental progress, we here analyze the Andreev reflections of incoming charge pulses on the interface with a superconductor. To this end, we employ a Wigner function representation that allows us to visualize the response function of the interface both in the time and in the frequency domain. We analyze the response of an interface between a normal-metal and a singlet or triplet superconductor with and without an insulating barrier in between them. As a special case, we analyze the Andreev reflections of clean single-particle excitations that are generated by the application of lorentzian-shaped voltage pulses to the contacts of the inputs. Our predictions may be tested in future experiments with edge states coupled to superconductors.

Abstract:The scattering of exotic quasiparticles may follow different rules than electrons. In the fractional quantum Hall regime, a quantum point contact (QPC) provides a source of quasiparticles with field effect selectable charges and statistics, which can be scattered on an 'analyzer' QPC to investigate these rules. Remarkably, for incident quasiparticles dissimilar to those naturally transmitted across the analyzer, electrical conduction conserves neither the nature nor the number of the quasiparticles. In contrast with standard elastic scattering, theory predicts the emergence of a mechanism akin to the Andreev reflection at a normal-superconductor interface. Here, we observe the predicted Andreev-like reflection of an $e/3$ quasiparticle into a $-2e/3$ hole accompanied by the transmission of an $e$ quasielectron. Combining shot noise and cross-correlation measurements, we independently determine the charge of the different particles and ascertain the coincidence of quasielectron and fractional hole. The present work advances our understanding on the unconventional behavior of fractional quasiparticles, with implications toward the generation of novel quasi-particles/holes and non-local entanglements.

Abstract:We investigated the electronic properties of the topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at low temperature. We obtained high-resolution quasiparticle interference data of the topological surface Dirac electrons at different energies. Spin-selective joint density of states calculations were performed for surface and bulk electronic states to interpret the observed quasiparticle interference data. The topological properties of our crystals are demonstrated by the absence of backscattering along with the linear energy dispersion of the dominant scattering vector. In addition, we detect non-dispersive scattering modes which we associate with bulk-surface scattering and, thus, allow an approximate identification of the bulk energy gap range based on our quasiparticle interference data. Measurements of differential conductance maps in magnetic fields up to 15 T have been carried out, but no strong modifications could be observed.
