Abstract:This study performed a computational analysis of fracture mechanics model problems based on the constitutive equations of the Toupin–Mindlin gradient elasticity theory, which accounts for the scale effects associated with the size of microstructural inhomogeneities in the material. The calculation is based on a variational formulation of the boundary value problem for displacements, strains, stresses, and their gradients. According to this approach, the variational equations include partial derivatives of displacements of only the first order, in contrast to the classical formulation of the boundary value problem in displacements, which includes derivatives of displacements up to and including the fourth order, and Lagrangian variational equation in displacements, which involves their double differentiation. The solution of the formulated variational equations based on the mixed finite element method greatly simplifies the choice of approximation functions since there is no need to use finite elements to ensure the continuity of the first derivatives of displacements at the boundary between elements. The energy balance concept is used to calculate the energy release rate with increasing crack length, in which the potential energy increment in an elastic body is determined, taking into account the strain and stress gradients. The results of solving two-dimensional model problems of stretching of a plate with central and edge Mode I cracks under a plane deformed state and axisymmetric problems of stretching of a hollow cylinder with internal and external annular surface cracks are presented. The calculations were performed using a triangular cross-type mesh with a denser mesh at the crack tip for different mesh spacings and the linear scale parameters of the microstructure. Calculated data were obtained to determine local fracture parameters, such as the elastic energy release rate at the crack tip and SIF, via the linear fracture mechanics formula. The calculated SIF dependencies were close to linear for the considered model problems and the given variation range of the scale parameter. The specific feature of the solutions obtained with the strain gradient effect account was a decline in the values of local parameters related to the fracture energy compared to the classical theory of elasticity.
