Abstract:The decay of the active atoms in micromasers is theoretically analyzed. The equations of motion for the diagonal elements of the micromaser field, which include an atomic-decay effect, have been obtained. The relation between the photon statistics and the micromaser field on the atomic decay has been studied. The effect of atomic-decay rates and average photon numbers, photon-number variances, and the photon-number distribution has been discussed. It has been shown that generation of approximate trapping states or number states requires very small atomic-decay rates and very large field-atom coupling constants.

Abstract:We study the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) and quantum anti-Zeno effect (QAZE) of the multimode quantum Rabi model(MQRM). We derive an analytic expression for the decay rate of the survival probability where cavity modes are initially prepared as thermal equilibrium states. A crossover from QZE to QAZE is observed due to the energy backflow induced by high frequency cavity modes. In addition, we apply a numerically exact method based on the thermofield dynamics(TFD) theory and the matrix product states(MPS) to study the effect of squeezing of the cavity modes on the QZE of the MQRM. The influence of the squeezing angle, squeezing strength and temperature on the decay rate of the survival probability are discussed.

Abstract:The dynamics of off-diagonal elements and phase diffusion processes in regular pumped micromasers with atomic decay are studied. The dependence of phase diffusion coefficients on time is also discussed. The effect of atomic decay on the phase diffusion coefficients is investigated. A formula to calculate the evolution of the off-diagonal elements, which is suitable for finite atomic lifetime is derived. When the field approaches its steady state, the evolution of the electric strength of the micromaser field becomes, to a very good approximation, an exponential decay independent of initial states, so the phase diffusion coefficients are constants. The calculation verifies the validity of the exponential decay assumption for a system approaching its steady state. We show that regularization of the pumping leads to a decrease of these coefficients. The phase diffusion coefficients as a function of interaction time have many peaks, which are due to the trapping states. The peaks decrease as atomic decay increases, because the trapping states are washed out by large atomic decay.

Abstract:An important event occurring recently in quantum optics is the invention of the mi-cromaser,1 which makes it possible to test some purely quantum mechanical phenomena predicted by theoreticians. A number of theoretical investigations2 on the micromaser have been made. Among them, the first micromaser theory was presented by Filipowicz et al. (FJM).3 They predicted that the photon statistical distribution could be sub-Poissonian in such a device.

Abstract:The micromaser possesses a variety of dynamical phase transitions parametrized by the flux of atoms and the time-of-flight of the atom within the cavity. We discuss how these phases may be revealed to an observer outside the cavity using the long-time correlation length in the atomic beam. Some of the phase transitions are not reflected in the average excitation level of the outgoing atom, which is the commonly used observable. The correlation length is directly related to the leading eigenvalue of the time evolution operator, which we study in order to elucidate the phase structure. We find that as a function of the time-of-flight the transition from the thermal to the maser phase is characterized by a sharp peak in the correlation length. For longer times-of-flight there is a transition to a phase where the correlation length grows exponentially with the flux. We present a detailed numerical and analytical treatment of the different phases and discuss the physics behind them.

Abstract:We propose a tunable on-chip micromaser using a superconducting quantumcircuit (SQC). By taking advantage of externally controllable statetransitions, a state population inversion can be achieved and preserved for thetwo working levels of the SQC and, when needed, the SQC can generate a singlephoton. We can regularly repeat these processes in each cycle when thepreviously generated photon in the cavity is decaying, so that a periodicsequence of single photons can be produced persistently. This provides acontrollable way for implementing a persistent single-photon source on amicroelectronic chip.
Exact Non-Markovian Cavity Dynamics Strongly Coupled to A Reservoir

Abstract:The exact non-Markovian dynamics of a microcavity strongly coupled to a general reservoir at arbitrary temperature is studied. With the exact master equation for the reduced density operator of the cavity system, we analytically solve the time evolution of the cavity state and the associated physical observables. We show that the non-Markovian dynamics is completely determined by the propagating (retarded) and correlation Green functions. Compare the non-Markovian behavior at finite temperature with those at zero-temperature limit or Born-Markov limit, we find that the non-Markovian memory effect can dramatically change the coherent and thermal dynamics of the cavity. We also numerically study the dissipation dynamics of the cavity through the mean mode amplitude decay and the average photon number decay in the microwave regime. It is shown that the strong coupling between the cavity and the reservoir results in a long-time dissipationless evolution to the cavity field amplitude, and its noise dynamics undergoes a critical transition from the weak to strong coupling due to the non-Markovian memory effect.

Abstract:The two-photon micromaser provides a clean setup to study two-photon processes. A two-photon lnicromaser was experimentally demonstrated by Brune et at. [1] by using a. Niobium superconducting cavity. In this paper, we extended the quantum theory of the two-photon lnicromaser developed by Ashraf, Gea- Banacloche, and Zubairy [2] to study the linewidth by using an ansatz method [3]. We consider a three-level atomic system interacting with a single mode of radiation field inside a cavity with the intermediate level detuned from the cavity mode. We compare the results, under the large detuning limit, with those obtained from an effective Hamiltonian approach.

Generating Large Cats with Nine Lives: Long-Lived Macroscopically Distinct Superposition States in Atomic Ensembles

Abstract:We propose to create and stabilize long-lived macroscopic quantum superposition states in atomic ensembles. We show that using a fully quantum parametric amplifier can cause the simultaneous decay of two atoms and, in turn, create stabilized atomic Schrödinger cat states. Remarkably, even with modest parameters these intracavity atomic cat states can have an extremely long lifetime, up to \emph{4 orders of magnitude} longer than that of intracavity photonic cat states under the same parameter conditions, reaching \emph{tens of milliseconds}. This lifetime of atomic cat states is ultimately limited to \emph{several seconds} by extremely weak spin relaxation and thermal noise. Our work opens up a new way toward the long-standing goal of generating large-size and long-lived cat states, with immediate interests both in fundamental studies and noise-immune quantum technologies.

Abstract:We study how the thermalization time of a single radiation cavity-field mode changes drastically depending on the type of the atomic reservoir it interacts. Temporal evolution of the field is analyzed within the micromaser scheme, where each atomic reservoir is modeled as a beam of atoms crossing an electromagnetic cavity in which they weakly interact with the field. The cavity-field thermalizes when we consider either multi-atom or multi-level atom reservoirs. We found that each atomic reservoir generates a different scaling law in the thermalization time of the cavity-field. Such scaling laws can be used for a faster or slower heating and cooling process. We have obtained analytical expressions for the thermalization time that were verified by means of a numerical simulation of the injection of each atomic reservoir into the cavity. We also discussed how our results could boost the efficiency and power output of some quantum heat engines during a finite time operation when the radiation field mode acts as the working substance.

Abstract:We present a new theoretical treatment of macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) and quantum coherent atomic tunneling in a zero-temperature two-species Bose-Einstein condensate system in the presence of the nonlinear self-interaction of each species, the interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the Josephson-like tunneling interaction. It is shown that the nonlinear interactions can dramatically affect the MQST and the atomic tunneling, and lead to the collapses and revivals (CR) of population imbalance between the two condensates. The competing effects between the self-interaction of each species and the interspecies interaction can lead to the quenching of the MQST and the suppression of the CR and the Shapiro-like steps of the atomic tunneling current. It is revealed that the interatomic nonlinear interactions can induce the coherent atomic tunneling between two condensates even though there does not exist the interspecies Josephson-like tunneling coupling.
Scattering of Short Laser Pulses from Trapped Fermions

Abstract:We investigate the scattering of intense short laser pulses off trapped cold fermionic atoms. We discuss the sensitivity of the scattered light to the quantum statistics of the atoms. The temperature dependence of the scattered light spectrum is calculated. Comparisons are made with a system of classical atoms that obey Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. We find the total scattering increases as the fermions become cooler but eventually tails off at very low temperatures (far below the Fermi temperature). At these low temperatures the fermionic degeneracy plays an important role in the scattering, as it inhibits spontaneous emission into occupied energy levels below the Fermi surface. We demonstrate that temperature dependent qualitative changes in the differential and total spectrum can be utilized to probe the quantum degeneracy of a trapped Fermi gas when the total number of atoms is sufficiently large (greater than or equal to 10 degrees). At smaller numbers of atoms, incoherent scattering dominates and it displays weak temperature dependence.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of injected atomic coherence on the tunneling dynamics of ultraslow V-type three-level atoms in a single-mode two-photon micromaser. Cold atoms, prepared in a superposition of states a and b, are injected into a cavity prepared in the Fock state n. The phase time of tunneling, a quantifiable measure for assessing the duration of atomic traversal through the cavity, reveals intriguing sub- and superclassical tunneling characteristics under the influence of injected coherence. A salient feature of this tunneling process is its dependence on the coherent addition of amplitudes associated with both barrier and well potentials (τ+,τ−). Furthermore, the atomic center-of-mass (CM) momentum, and the cavity length significantly influence resonances in the phase time curve and the peak value of superclassical traversal. The findings of this study have potential implications for the design and control of ultracold atom-based technologies, including quantum sensors, quantum information processing, and quantum simulation.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the non-Markovian (NM) dynamical evolution of a three-level atom coupled to a semi-infinite one-dimensional photonic waveguide and driven by a classical driving field. The single-end of waveguide behaves as a perfect mirror while light can pass through the opposite end with no backreflection. We derive the exact analytical expressions for the wave function of the driven three-level atom by solving a set of delay differential equations and give the conditions of atom-photon bound state formation that can inhibit the dissipation, which appears in the atom-mirror interspace in order to trap a considerable amount of initial atomic excitation. We show that when the evolution time of the system is shorter than the time delay taken by a photon to perform a round trip between the atom and mirror, the atomic dynamics exhibits Markovian properties, which depend on the driving strength and rescaled parameters. If the evolution time of the system exceeds the time delay, the photon can be reabsorbed by the atom with the photon emitted by the atom having completed the round trip, which exhibits NM memory effects, where the population eventually convergences to the finite-steady values. We also study the influence of the loss and dephasing on the formation of a bound state. Finally, the above results are extended to a more general quantum system involving single-end photonic waveguide coupled to an arbitrary number of noninteracting three-level atoms driven by the driving fields.
