Abstract:The rise of total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol, and the drop of cortisol in serum induced by PA can be significantly inhibited by total ginsenosides in the leaves of Panax ginseng [GSL, 60 mg/(kg.d)]. From GSL ten compounds have been isolated and identified as ginsenoside-Rb2, -Rc, -Rd, -Re, -Rg1 -F3, F2, -Rg2, 20(R)-Rg2 and -Rh1, respectively. Pharmacological study has proved ginsenoside-Re to be the chief active constituent of GSL.

Abstract:We investigated the effects of Qishen Yiqi Dropping Pill (QSYQ) on platelets aggregation and its possible mechanisms. Hyperlipidemic model in rabbits was produced by a high fat/cholesterol diet for 6 weeks, the therapeutic effect of QSYQ with 2.0 g/kg, 1.0 g/kg, and 0.5 g/kg was observed. Fourteen days after drug treatment, platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP), arachidonic acid (AA), and collagen (COLL) was significantly reduced in rabbits of model group. Moreover, β-thromboglobulin (β-TG) level decreased obviously but no significant change in P-selectin and platelet factor 4 (PF4) level, while QSYQ significantly decreased the ratio of thromboxane B2 (TXB(2)) to 6-keto-prostaglandin F(1α) (6-Keto-PGF(1α)) and increased cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) level in rabbits. In summary, QSYQ can improve platelets aggregation and inhibit the over-release of β-TG in hyperlipidemic rabbits; and the increased cAMP level may be involved in this process. These results suggest that the antiplatelet aggregation effect of QSYQ may be due to its ability to increase cAMP level for improving cAMP metabolism.

Abstract:Atherosclerosis and its related complications are the leading causes of death in the West and in many developed countries. This study aims to investigate the hypolipidemic effect of bamboo shoot oil (BSO) in Sprague Dawley rats. A. group of rats had induced hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, and fatty liver by being fed with a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet for 4 wk. The control group was administered 10 mL distilled water per kg body weight, while the other groups were, respectively, administered 250 mg beta-sitosterol, 250 mg BSO, 500 mg BSO, and 1000 mg BSO per kg body weight by oral gavage. The results demonstrated that BSO could significantly decrease the levels of total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, phytosterol, lipoprotein lipase, hepatic lipase, and atherogenic index in serum, and increase the levels of cholesterol in feces. It could also significantly decrease the level of relative liver weight and liver lipids. The pronounced hypolipidemic effects of BSO might be attributed to its ability to inhibit: cholesterol absorption and increase cholesterol excretion. These results suggest that consuming BSO may provide benefits in managing hypercholesterolemia. Therefore, BSO may be a good candidate for development as a functional food and nutraceutical.
[Effects of Ginsenoside-Rb on Blood Lipid Metabolism and Anti-Oxidation in Hyperlipidemia Rats].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To observe effects of ginsenoside-Rb (G-Rb) on total cholesterol, lipoprotein cholesterol metabolism and anti-oxidation in experimental hyperlipidemia rats.METHOD:Hyperlipidemia rats were respectively given G-Rb 50, 100, 200 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) ig for twelve days. Total cholesterol, lipoprotein cholesterol and lipid peroxidation (LPO) contents, prostacycline (PGI2), thromboxane (TXA2), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and blood viscosity were measured. Fat accumulation in liver was also observed.RESULT:Triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) in serum, TXA2 in plasma, LPO in serum and liver, and blood viscosity were decreased significantly. High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc) in serum, PGI2 in plasma and SOD in serum and liver were significantly increased by G-Rb (100, 200 mg x kg(-1)) in experimental hyperlipidemia rats. In addition, G-Rb could decrease TC/HDL-c, LDLc/HDL-c ratio, increase PGI2/TXA2 ratio and inhibit fat accumulation in liver.CONCLUSION:G-Rb could have anti-arteriosclerosis effect by improving cholesterol and lipoprotein-cholesterol metabolism, suppressing lipid peroxidation, increasing anti-oxidase activity and PGI2/TXA2 ratio.
Anti-hyperlipidemic and Anti-Oxidative Effects of Gelsemine in High-Fat-diet-fed Rabbits.

Abstract:The present study investigated the anti-hyperlipidemic proprieties of a natural alkaloid, gelsemine, in a high-fat-fed rabbit model. Animals were randomly divided into five groups and fed normal diet, hypercholesterolemic diet (1% cholesterol), or hypercholesterolemic diet (1% cholesterol) supplemented with gelsemine (1, 5, or 25 mg/kg). After 60 days, serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, HDL-C, triglycerides, apolipoproteins A and B, SGOT, SGPT, glucose, and insulin were measured in all experimental groups. Hypercholesterolemic diet resulted in significantly elevated levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, SGOT, and SGPT, and reduced HDL-C compared to the normocholesterolemic diet group. Gelsemine treatment significantly improved lipid profile parameters, affected by hyperlipidemia, while having no effect on the levels of apolipoproteins, glucose, and insulin. Furthermore, gelsemine treatment decreased hyperlipidemia-induced oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner, as indicated by the increased activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase, and reduction in serum nitric oxide, and malondialdehyde concentrations in hyperlipidemic animals that received gelsemine supplementation. Dietary supplementation with gelsemine may, therefore, reverse the effect of the lipogenic diet on lipid profile and hepatic enzymes in hyperlipidemic rabbits, and protect tissues from oxidative stress, caused by high-fat diet.

Abstract:Hyperlipidemia is one of the vital coronary risk factors and is positively related to morbidity and mortality of coronary heart disease. There are numerous herbal medicines which are reported to exert good hypolipidemic actions with few side effects.In the present study, the hypolipidemic effects of polydatin, a compound from Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc, on hyperlipidemic rabbits were evaluated. Thirty-two male rabbits were fed a high fat/cholesterol diet for 6 weeks and another eight male rabbits fed a basic diet served as normal control. Three weeks after a high fat/cholesterol diet, the animals were orally administrated polydatin (25, 50, and 100 mg kg(-1) per day) by intubation for 3 weeks. The results showed that polydatin markedly decreased the serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in hyperlipidemic rabbits. The ratio of TC to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and the liver coefficient were also reduced. But both polydatin and high fat/cholesterol diet did not evidently affect body weight in hyperlipidemic rabbits. All these results suggest that polydatin from Polygonum cuspidatum has favorable potency to develop a hypolipemic and/or hepatoprotective agent in clinic. Abstract:AIM: To continuously observe the protective effects of lycopene on lipid peroxidation injure in hyperlipemia rabbits and to study the possible mechanisms.MEDHODS: 30 New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into three groups.They were individually housed in metal cages.Throughout the experimental period,they were given restricted amounts of food(80-100(g·h~(-1)) per day).Control group was fed with normal diet;Model group was fed with 1% cholesterol,10% lard and 89%normal diet;Lycopene group was fed with 1% cholesterol,10% lard and normal diet plus 6%lycopene(60(mg·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)));At the time of the first day,the second,4th,6th and 8th week,Blood samples were drawn from ear edge vein of rabbits.Total cholesterol(TC),Triglyceride(TG) and High density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),Superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity and Maleic dialdehyde(MDA) content of serum were detected.The level of serum nitric oxide synthases(NOS) activity and Nitric oxide(NO) were determined.At the end of the study,the plaque areas were measured.SPSS(10.0) software was used to evaluate the differences between three groups.RESULTS: Compared with Model group,lycopene could reduce the levels of serum TG and MDA,increase serum SOD activity,increase serum NO, diminish lipid plaque areas significantly.CONCLUSION: Lycopene has antiatherogenic effect.The possible mechanisms may be that lycopene can reduce TG,decrease lipid peroxidation injure and protect vascular endothelium in hyperlipemia rabbits.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Gleditsia sinensis Lam. has been used in the traditional Chinese medicine as a chief ingredient of many polyherbal formulations for the treatment of obesity and thrombosis. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effects of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. fruit aqueous extract (GAE) on hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis in Japanese white rabbits on a high fat diet.Materials and methods: Rabbits were divided into four groups: the normal control with a normal diet, and high-fat diet-fed model group and GAE-treated groups supplemented with GAE (6 or 12 mg/kg/day, p.o.), respectively. The groups fed high-fat diets were given i.v. with bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the 4th week to induce atherosclerosis. The serum lipid profile, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), was determined on the 0th, 4th, 8th and 14th week, respectively. And the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatine kinase (CK) were measured simultaneously. At the end of the experiment, the rabbits were sacrificed, and the atherosclerotic plaques as well as the histopathological changes of aorta and liver were assessed by oil-red or HE staining, respectively, and the aorta and liver lipid profiles were also assayed.Results: Results showed that the prophylactic treatment with GAE could significantly decrease the lipid levels of serum, aorta and liver, attenuate aortic atherosclerosis and improve aortic remodeling without the significant liver and muscle toxicity.Conclusion: The present findings suggest that GAE can effectively attenuate the atherosclerotic at least through anti-hyperlipidemic activity and thus has the therapeutic potential in treating hyperlipidemia-related cardiovascular diseases. Effect of Boschniakia Rossica Extracts on Lipid Peroxidation of Lipoproteins in Rabbits with Hyperlipidemia

Abstract:Objective:To study the inhibitory effect of Boschniakia rossica extracts(BRE) on lipid peroxi-dation of plasma lipoproteins in rabbits with hyperlipidemia.Method:The hyperlipidemic model were established by feeding rabbits with high-fat diet.After 8 weeks of treatment,plasma lipoproteins were isolated,and then lipid peroxide(LPO) and susceptibility of low density lipoprotein(LDL) to oxidation was investigated.Result:After the administration with BRE,the levels of plasma total cholesterol(TC),very low density lipoprotein cholesterol(VLDL-CH) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-CH) in hyperlipidemic rabbits were significantly re-duced;LPO levels of plasma and lipoproteins were significantly decreased;and the lag phage of LDL oxidation curve in vitro was noticeably prolonged.Conclusion:BRE,which can reduce blood lipids,decrease the lipid per-oxidizability of lipoproteins and promote resistance to LDL oxidation,may be useful in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.
Ginsenoside Rb1, Compound K and 20(S)-Protopanaxadiol Attenuate High-Fat Diet-Induced Hyperlipidemia in Rats via Modulation of Gut Microbiota and Bile Acid Metabolism

Abstract:Hyperlipidemia, characterized by elevated serum lipid concentrations resulting from lipid metabolism dysfunction, represents a prevalent global health concern. Ginsenoside Rb1, compound K (CK), and 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (PPD), bioactive constituents derived from Panax ginseng, have shown promise in mitigating lipid metabolism disorders. However, the comparative efficacy and underlying mechanisms of these compounds in hyperlipidemia prevention remain inadequately explored. This study investigates the impact of ginsenoside Rb1, CK, and PPD supplementation on hyperlipidemia in rats induced by a high-fat diet. Our findings demonstrate that ginsenoside Rb1 significantly decreased body weight and body weight gain, ameliorated hepatic steatosis, and improved dyslipidemia in HFD-fed rats, outperforming CK and PPD. Moreover, ginsenoside Rb1, CK, and PPD distinctly modified gut microbiota composition and function. Ginsenoside Rb1 increased the relative abundance of Blautia and Eubacterium, while PPD elevated Akkermansia levels. Both CK and PPD increased Prevotella and Bacteroides, whereas Clostridium-sensu-stricto and Lactobacillus were reduced following treatment with all three compounds. Notably, only ginsenoside Rb1 enhanced lipid metabolism by modulating the PPARγ/ACC/FAS signaling pathway and promoting fatty acid β-oxidation. Additionally, all three ginsenosides markedly improved bile acid enterohepatic circulation via the FXR/CYP7A1 pathway, reducing hepatic and serum total bile acids and modulating bile acid pool composition by decreasing primary/unconjugated bile acids (CA, CDCA, and β-MCA) and increasing conjugated bile acids (TCDCA, GCDCA, GDCA, and TUDCA), correlated with gut microbiota changes. In conclusion, our results suggest that ginsenoside Rb1, CK, and PPD supplementation offer promising prebiotic interventions for managing HFD-induced hyperlipidemia in rats, with ginsenoside Rb1 demonstrating superior efficacy.
GINGKO Suppresses Atherosclerosis Through Downregulating the Expression of Connexin 43 in Rabbits

Abstract:Introduction Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) EGb761 is widely used for cardiovascular prevention. Here, we investigated the effects of GBE on atherosclerotic lesion development in rabbits with a high-fat diet. Material and methods Forty New Zealand white male rabbits were randomly divided into four groups. The first two were the normal diet group (C) and the high-fat group (HF). The remaining two groups were those who received a high cholesterol diet supplemented with either the standard drug (simvastatin 2 mg/kg/day) or GBE (3 mg/kg/day). At 12 weeks, histopathological and chemical analyses were performed. Results Plasma lipid measurement showed that GBE inhibited high-fat diet-induced increase of serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) by 59.1% (0.9 ±0.2 4 mmol/l vs. 2.2 ±0.4 mmol/l), 18.2% (31.1 ±1.4 mmol/l vs. 38.0 ±0.4 mmol/l) and 15% (28.9 ±1.3 mmol/l vs. 34.0±1.0 mmol/l), respectively, at 12 weeks (p < 0.01). The en face Sudan IV-positive lesion area of the aorta in the GBE group (51.7 ±3.1%) was significantly lower compared with that in the HF group (88.2 ±2.2%; p < 0.01). The mean atherosclerotic lesion area of the GBE group was reduced by 53.2% compared with the HF group (p < 0.01). Immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis showed that GBE markedly suppressed high-fat diet-induced upregulation of connexin 43 (Cx43) in rabbits (p < 0.01). Conclusions Thus, our study revealed that GBE prevented atherosclerosis progress through modulating plasma lipid, suppressing atherosclerotic lesion development, and attenuating the expression of Cx43 protein.

Abstract:The effect of grape seed extracts on serum lipids was observed in rabbits fed with high fat diet. The control group fed with normal stock diet. The diet of the four experimental groups was high in fat and cholesterol. The experimental control group fed with the high fat diet only, and the other three experimental groups fed the high fat diet added with grape seed extracts (5, 10 or 15 g/d) for three months. At the 0th, 6th and 12th week of the experiment, there was a lower serum TC, TG, LDL-C and a higher HDL-C in experimental groups in comparison with experimental control group.
Effect of kidney-tonifying recipe on blood lipid level and expression of ox-LDL mRNA of endothelial cell in castrated hyperlipidemia rabbits

Abstract:Purpose: Effect of kidney-tonifying recipe of traditional Chinese medicine on blood lipid, plasma ox-LDL and expression of ox-LDL mRNA in castrated hyperlipidemia rabbits. Methods: Forty rabbits were fed high cholesterol diet after the castration operation and injected bovine serum albunim. The kidney-tonifying recipe was given for 12weeks. Results: Kidney-tonifying recipe could decrease the level of CHO, TG, LDL, and increase HDL(P<0.05). Kidney-tonifying recipe also could prevent the rising of plasma ox-LDL(P<0.05), and the expression of ox-LDL mRNA(P<0.05). Conclusions: Kidney-tonifying recipe could prevent hyperlipidemia, decrease plasma ox-LDL level, and expression of ox-LDL mRNA, thus preserve the function of endothelial cell as well.
Effect of adding different dosage Hirudo nipponica on the level of blood lipids in rabbits fed with high-fat diet

Abstract:Objective:To study the effects of different dosage Hirudo nipponica on the level of blood lipids in rabbits fed with high-fat diet. Methods:150 male meat rabbits were selected and randomly divided into five groups,control group,high serum lipid group and three different dosage Hirudo groups. Rabbits in Hirudo groups were daily fed with Hirudo(0.15,0.075,0.0375g/kg) for 40 days. The blood samples were drawn from heart just before the experiment and the 20th day,40th day of the experiment. The blood lipids level in serum included total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),high density lipoprotein(HDL-C),low density lipoprotein(LDL-C). Results:The body weight of rabbits in each groups was increasing during the test period,but no significant was observed between each groups(p0.05). The blood lipids in high serum lipid group was abnormal,compared with control group,the levels of TC,TG,LDL-C in high serum lipid group were significantly increased(p0.01),the level of HDL-C was higher(p0.05). Compared with high serum lipid group,the level of TC,TG,LDL-C in three Hirudo groups were significant decreased(p0.01),while no significant differences(p0.05) were observed between the three Hirudo groups. Compared with high serum lipid group,the level of HDL-C in Hirudo group had no significant differences(p0.05). Conclusion:Hirudo could regulate the blood lipid and prevent the formation of hyperlipidmia,and the lower level Hirudo(0.0375g/kg) could significantly decrease blood lipids.
[The Effect of Rhubarb Ethanol-Extract on Hyperlipidemia and Liver Fatty in Rabbits].

Abstract:AIM:To observe the effect of rhubarb ethanol-extract on hyperlipidemia and liver fatty in rabbits.METHODS:Thirty healthy male white rabbits were divided randomly into five groups, six rabbits in each group. The rabbits in control group were fed with common forage. The rabbits in model group were fed with high lipid forage. The rabbits in three different rhubarb groups were fed with high lipid forage and treated with different level rhubarb ethanol-extract (REE). In the process of experiment, periodically measured serology index of the rabbits and observed common physiology index. The rabbits were killed at the end of tenth week, liver fatty degeneration degree and liver coefficient were measured and compared.RESULTS:REE could decrease serum total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and increase serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and reduce liver fatty de generation and protect liver cell function. And the dose-effect relation was showed among different dose REE groups.CONCLUSION:REE can significantly reduce blood lipid, prevent and treat hyperlipidemia and liver fatty.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the potential anti-atherogenic effects of black soybean anthocyanin extracts (BSCAE) on rabbits fed with high cholesterol diets. Method: Forty-eight male adult New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: normal control group, model control group and two experimental groups respectively. Except normal control group, the other groups were fed with high-cholesterol diets in previous 10 w. Rabbits were given different doses of BSCAE (400,800 mg/kg bw) in experimental groups or 15ml normal saline in control groups ig every day for 18 w. Then, all animals were killed and serum and liver were collected for determination of lipid profile, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and activity of antioxidative enzymes. Aorta were collected for evaluation of atherosclerotic (AS) lesion grossly by Sudan Ⅲ or histopathologically by HE staining. Results: The gross and histopatho- logical findings confirmed that feeding BSCAE to rabbits restrained the progression of AS lesions in the aorta. Different doses of BSCAE reduced the profile of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and apoprotein B as compared to model group significantly. BSCAE decreased MDA both in serum and liver and increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in liver. In addition, the elevated liver cholesterol contents and the activities of serum and liver glutathione peroxidase were siginificantly lowered in rabbitsfed with 800 mg/kg bw BSCAE than model group. Conclusion:BSCAE can restrain the progression of AS lesion, the potential mechanism for which is the antioxidative and hypocholesterolemic effiects of BSCAE.
Beneficial Effect of Grape Seed Proanthocyanidin Extract in Rabbits with Steroid-Induced Osteonecrosis Via Protecting Against Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Oxidative damage and apoptosis play dominant roles in the pathogenesis of steroid-induced osteonecrosis (ON). Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) demonstrates antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties. Our aim was to demonstrate the effects of GSPE in preventing steroid-induced ON in rabbits.METHODS:Osteonecrosis was induced by high-dose methylprednisolone (40 mg/kg). Rabbits in the preventive medicine group were treated with 100 mg/kg/day GSPE for 14 consecutive days, and the presence or absence of ON was examined histopathologically. Oxidative damage in bone tissue was assessed by immunohistochemical staining of 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and activities of antioxidant enzymes Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) and phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Apoptosis was detected via quantitative terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labelling (TUNEL) staining and activated caspase 3 immunoblotting and activity.RESULTS:GSPE significantly attenuated the changes of immunohistochemical staining of 8-OHdG, MDA levels, and antioxidant enzymes activities, which were caused by methylprednisolone administration. Quantitative TUNEL and caspase 3 assay showed lower apoptosis with GSPE application. Simultaneously, GSPE reduced the incidence of steroid-induced ON in an established rabbit model to 17.6 %, compared with 87.5 % in the steroid-only group.CONCLUSION:These results reveal that GSPE treatment could inhibit oxidative damage and apoptosis to exert beneficial effects on reducing the incidence of steroid-induced ON in rabbit models.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the effect of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on the endothelial inflammation molecule level in atherosclerotic rabbits. Methods: 30 male New Zealand rabbits were randomized equally into three groups, and were given restricted amounts of food (100～120 g/head per day) and free drinking. The control group (group A) was fed on standard diet. The cholsterol group (group B) was fed on standard diet plus 1% cholesterol. The GSPE group (group C) was fed on standard diet plus l% GSPE plus 1% cholesterol. All the rabbits were fed for twelve weeks, and were drawn fastingblood samples on one day before the experiment, at the first, second, fourth, eighth and twelfth weekend of the experiment, then they were determined serum interleukin 6 (IL-6) by commercially available ELISA kits, and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) by commercially available EIA kits. Results: ①Compared with the group B, serum IL-6 absorbency level was lowered markedly by dietary GSPE at the eighth weekend (P0.05) and even more markedly at the twelfth weekend in group C(P0.00 01). the serum CRP contents were lowered markedly by dietary GSPE (P0.00 01) at the first weekend, which lasted to the end of the experiment. ③IL-6 was highly correlated with the treat and time(r=0.703 14,P0.00 01) in the group B,but not in the group C (P=0.251 3). CRP, in both the group B (r=0.990 47, P0.00 01) and C (r=0.747 77, P0.00 01) was highy correlated with the treat and time. Conclusions: GSPE can decrease the endothelial inflammation molecule level in atherosclerotic rabbits, which maybe one of the molecule mechanisms of antiatherogenesis.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To determine the effect of atorvastatin on the hypercholesterolemia induced lesion in the lung. METHODS:Fifteen male New Zealand rabbits were randomly assigned into a control group (n=5), a high-cholesterol forage group (n=5), and an atrovastatin treatment group (n=5). The control group received normal forage, but the high-cholesterol group and atrovastatin treatment group received high-cholesterol forage. From the 9th week, the atrovastatin treatment group was added atorvastatin, and the experiment stopped at the end of the 14th week. At the beginning of the experiment and at the 8th, 14th week, blood cholesterol and body weight were detected. At the 14th week, bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL) was performed in vitro after the rabbits were executed; pathological examinations were determined in the lung tissues by staining with hamatoxylin-eosin. Oil red O and the activities of NF-kappaB in the alveolar macrophages (AMs) were investigated by immunocytochemistry. Proliferative cell nuclear antigen in the lung tissues was adopted by immunohistochemistry, and the concentrations of IL-6 in the serum, BALF and the culture supernatants of AMs were measured by ELISA. Pulmonary tissue paraffin section was stained with hamatoxylin-eosin. RESULTS:Atorvastatin reduced inflammatory infiltration, AM NF-kappaB activation, and cell proliferation in the lung, but raised IL-6 level. CONCLUSION:Hypercholesterolemia-induced pulmonary inflammation is attenuated by atorvastatin.

Abstract:AIM: To observe the effect of grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) on the lipid profile of atherosclerosis in rabbits. METHODS: 24 male New Zealand rabbits were randomized into three groups with 8 rabbits in each group. They were individually housed in metal cages in an air-conditioned room. Throughout the experimental period, they were given restricted amounts of food (100-120 g/head per day) of each diet, with no limit of drinking. The control group (group A) were fed with standard diet. The cholesterol group (group B) was fed with standard diet containing 1% cholesterol. The GSP group (group C) were fed with standard diet containing 1% cholesterol plus 1% GSP. All the rabbits were fed for twelve weeks. Blood samples were drawn from ear middle arteries of rabbits just before the experiment and at the first, the second, the forth, the eighth and the twelfth weekend of the experiment. All the rabbits were fasted for at least eight hours before the blood was drawn. The blood samples were analyzed for total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and they were measured enzymatically by automatic facilities. Aorta samples were observed through optical microscope. Results were expressed as means x̄ ± s. The Mixed Procedure of SAS 8.2 software was used to evaluate the differences between the cholesterol group and the GSP group. RESULTS: Compared with the group B, the TC, LDL-C, TG and the TG/HDL-C were lowered markedly by dietary GSP at the twelfth weekend (P<0.01), the HDL-C were improved markedly in the rabbits fed with GSP at the twelfth weekend (P<0.05). The extent and severity of atherosclerosis of the GSP group were less than those of the cholesterol group, and the stability of the atherosclerotic plaque of the GSP group was strengthened by GSP. CONCLUSION: GSP has effect on the lipid profile, and this data demonstrates that GSP may provide significant health benefits by dramatically ameliorating the incidence of atherosclerosis as demonstrated by reducing the TC, LDL-C, TG, TG/HDL-C and improving the HDL-C, and may have effect to improve insulin resistance.
