Abstract:The concept of geometrical constraints and steric hindrance in reactions is implanted deeply in a chemist's ‘chemical intuition’. However, until now a true three-dimensional view of these steric effects has not been realized experimentally for any chemical reaction in full. Here we report the complete three-dimensional characterization of the sterics of a benchmark polyatomic reaction by measuring the dependence of the product state-resolved angular distributions on the spatial alignment of the reactive bond in a crossed molecular beam experiment. The results prove the existence of two distinct microscopic reaction mechanisms. Detailed analysis reveals that the origin of the stereodynamics in the HCl(ν = 0) + CD3(00) product channel can be captured by a textbook line-of-centres collision model. In contrast, a time-delay pathway, which includes a sharp switch from in-plane to out-of-plane scattering in the forwards direction, appears to be operative in forming the excited HCl(ν = 1) + CD3(00) product pair. Steric effects are a key concept for understanding chemical reactivity. Now, by aligning reactants through control of the polarization of the infrared laser in a crossed-beam experiment, a three-dimensional view of how a reaction proceeds is reported. The results show striking dependences on the direction from which the laser-aligned reagents approach.

Abstract:A recent study has revealed a full 3-dimentional reactive scattering picture of the reaction C1+CHD3(v1=1) as the Cl atoms attack CHD3 from various directions respective to the C—H stretching bond. The reported polarization-dependent differential cross sections provide the most detailed characterization of the influences of reagent alignments on reactivity. To convey the stereo-specific information more accessible to general chemists, we show here, by proper symmetry considerations, how to retrieve from the measurements the relative integral and differential cross sections of two most common collision geometries: the end-on versus side-on attacks. The results, albeit coarse-grained, provide an appealing picture that not only reinforces our intuition about chemical reactivity, but also sheds more light on the conventional (unpolarized) attributes.

Abstract:The vector correlation between products and reagents for reaction O(P-3)+HCl -> OH+Cl is studied using a quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method on the benchmark potential energy surface of the ground (3)A" state [Ramachandran and Peterson, J. Chem. Phys. 119 (2003) 9550]. The generalised differential cross section (2 pi/sigma)(d sigma 00/d omega t) is presented in the centre of mass frame. The distribution of dihedral angles. P(phi(T)),), and the distribution of angles between k and j', P(theta(T)), are calculated. The influence of the collision energy and the influence of the reagent rotation and vibration on the product polarization are studied in the present work. The calculated results indicate that the rotational polarization of product molecule is almost independent of collision energy but sensitive to the reagent rotation and vibration.

Abstract:The transition state in the Cl + CH4 reaction is of Cl-H-C collinear geometry, which serves as the bottleneck to reaction. When the reactant CH4 is antisymmetrically stretch-excited to ν3 = 1 by absorbing a linearly polarized photon, all four C-H bonds are collectively excited, and any one of the H atoms could be attacked by the Cl atom. At first sight, it is not obvious how an excited spherical-top molecule like CH4 is aligned and what consequences will be on chemical reactivity by polarizing the CH4 reagents. As shown here, an enormous steric effect on reactivity is observed, which depends sensitively on the selected rotational states. By exploiting various rotational branches in optical excitation, we quantify the degree of stereospecificity for a few lowest rovibrational states of the aligned CH4(ν3 = 1) reagents, as well as account for the hyperfine depolarization factor. This information lays the foundation for a full stereorequirement study of the Cl + CH4(ν3 = 1) reaction.
Quantum dynamics study of C-H stretching vibrational excitation in the F+CHD 3 → HF+CD 3 reaction

Abstract:In recent decades, significant progress has been made in the precise theoretical investigation of gas-phase chemical reactions. Presently, a major challenge in the field of quantum dynamics is the development of precise methodologies for studying chemical reactions involving more than four atoms. As a typical multi-atomic reaction system, the F+CH 4 reaction and its isotopic substitution reactions have attracted widespread attention from both experimental and theoretical perspectives in recent years. Experimental studies on the reaction of F+CHD 3 revealed that the stretching vibration excitation of the C-H bond inhibits the bond dissociation, favoring the formation of DF+CHD 2 products channel. In this study, we employed a seven-dimensional quantum time-dependent wave packet method to investigate the dynamics of the F+CHD 3 reaction in both the reactant vibrational ground state and the first stretching excited state of the C-H bond. The paper analyzed reaction probabilities under different vibrational conditions, revealing that when the collision energy is below 0.06 eV, the reaction probability curves exhibit numerous fast-oscillating peaks, supporting the experimentally suggested phenomena of dynamic resonance. At collision energies ranging from 0.06 eV to 0.3 eV, the reaction probability for the HF product channel in the vibrational excited state was lower than that in the ground state, consistent with experimental observations. Through the analysis of the time-independent wave functions of product channels under low-energy collision conditions, we have found that for reactions involving vibrational ground states, the HF products in the product asymptotic region and the reaction transition state region are in the v'=2 and v'=3 excited states of stretching vibration, respectively, consistent with previous experimental observations and six-dimensional quantum wave packet simulations. For reactions involving the first excited state of C-H stretching vibration, the HF products in the product asymptotic region and the reaction transition state region are both in the v'=3 excited state of stretching vibration, consistent with the results obtained based on energy analysis. Simulation results indicated that, in the case of low-energy collisions, the time-independent wave function for the C-H stretching vibrational excited state tends to be closer to the D atom side in the transition state region. This phenomenon was attributed to the more significant energy advantage of the vibrational excited state potential energy surface in the large collision angle region, explaining the inhibitory effect of stretching vibration excitation on the HF product channel. This study offers crucial theoretical support for interpreting experimental results and contributes to a deeper understanding of the influence of vibrational mode excitations on the dynamical processes in poly-atomic reactions.

Abstract:The vibrationally excited reaction O(1D) + CHD3(ν1 = 1) has been investigated by crossed-molecular-beam experiments with a time-sliced velocity map imaging technique. Detailed and quantitative information is extracted on the C–H stretching excitation effects on the reactivity and dynamics of the title reaction, with the help of preparation of C–H stretching excited CHD3 molecules by direct infrared excitation. Experimental results show that the vibrational stretching excitation of the C–H bond almost does not affect the relative contributions between different dynamical pathways for all product channels. For the OH + CD3 product channel, the vibrational energy of the C–H stretching excited CHD3 reagent is channeled exclusively into the vibrational energy of the OH products. The vibrational excitation of the CHD3 reactant changes the reactivities for the ground-state and umbrella-mode-excited CD3 channels very modestly, while it significantly suppresses the corresponding CHD2 channels. For the CHD2(ν1 = 1) channel, the stretching excited C–H bond of the CHD3 molecule acts almost as a pure spectator.

Abstract:A complete set of four polarization-dependent differential cross sections in the reactions of Cl + aligned-CHD3(v1=1,jK)→DCl(v=0)+CHD2(v1=1) is reported here for two different, rotationally polarized states with j = 1: specifically the jK=10 state prepared via the R(0) excitation and the 1±1 state via Q(1). In stark contrast to the complicated situation of the HCl(v) + CD3(v = 0) channel reported in Paper-I, the stereo-requirement of this isotopic channel for both polarized reactants appears quite straightforward and consistent with a direct rebound mechanism. The extent of steric effects is moderate and relatively smaller than the alternative H-atom abstraction channel. All major findings reported here can qualitatively be understood by first noting that the present reaction invokes abstracting a D-atom, which is the spectator in the IR-excitation process. Next, it is recognized that the directional properties of two polarized states of CHD3(v1=1, jK) should manifest primarily in the IR-excited C-H bond, leaving secondary imprints in the unexcited CD3-moiety. The stereo-specificity of the DCl + CHD2 product channel is further reduced by the fact that the abstraction can occur with any one of the three spatially distinct D-atoms.

Enlarging the Reactive Cone of Acceptance by Exciting the C–H Bond in the O(3P) + CHD3 Reaction

Abstract:The effects of the CH stretching vibration of methane on the O(P-3) + CHD3 reaction are elucidated in a crossed-beam imaging experiment. For the H-atom abstraction channel, the ground state reaction leads mainly to the vibrational ground states of products, OH(v = 0) + CD3(v = 0). When the reactant CHD3 is prepared with one-quantum excitation of CH stretching vibration (v(1) - 1), more than 90% of OH coproducts that formed concomitantly with the CD3(v = 0) product are in v = 1. Significant vibrational enhancement in the reaction rate is observed, and the product angular distribution shifts from a backward-dominance in O(P-3) + CHD3(v = 0) to a sideways-peaking upon CH stretching excitation. As to the D-atom abstraction channel, the C-H bond excitation, despite being conserved in the CHD2 product, unexpectedly hinders the overall reactivity of the unexcited C-D bond. We interpret the experimental findings as the result of enlarging the reactive cone of acceptance in abstracting the H atom at the expense of the cone for the D-atom transfer channel.

Multifaceted Stereoselectivity in Polyatomic Reactions

Abstract:Stereoselectivity or stereorequirement refers to the enhancement of chemical reactivity resulting from the preferential alignment/orientation of the colliding reactants. This concept is deeply embodied in the pre-exponential A-factor of the Arrhenius rate expression or the entropy effect of thermal kinetics in physical chemistry textbooks. To understand its dynamical consequence and seek for its mechanistic origin, two different approaches of either selecting the rotational states of the reactant or aligning/orienting the reactant in the laboratory have traditionally been taken. Due to the experimental challenges, theory is far more advanced than experiment. However, even for the simple atom + diatom reaction, the physical interpretations of the calculated results can sometimes be ambiguous or controversial because of the entangled potential and kinematic factors. In this Feature Article, we try to experimentally tackle the problem for reactions with polyatomic reactants by adopting both approaches in parallel for the same reaction. By comparing the results from the two approaches as well as contrasting them with the analogous reactants-here, a symmetric-top CHD3 versus a spherical-top CH4, deeper physical insights are gained, which paves the road for future studies of complex systems and for establishing a more complete conceptual framework.

Abstract:Hydrogen dissociation is an unwanted competing pathway if a torsional motion around the C=C double bond in a chiral fluoroethylene derivative, namely (4-methylcyclohexylidene) fluoromethane (4MCF), is to be achieved. We show that the excited state H-dissociation can be drastically diminished on timescales long enough to initiate a torsion around the C=C double bond using the non-resonant dynamic Stark effect. Potential energy curves, dipoles and polarizabilities for the regarded one-dimensional reaction coordinate are calculated within the CASSCF method. The influence of the excitation and the laser control field is then simulated using wavepacket dynamics.

Ultrafast dynamics of CN radical reactions with chloroform solvent under vibrational strong coupling

Abstract:Polariton chemistry may provide a new means to control molecular reactivity, permitting remote, reversible modification of reaction energetics, kinetics, and product yields. A considerable body of experimental and theoretical work has already demonstrated that strong coupling between a molecular vibrational mode and the confined electromagnetic field of an optical cavity can alter chemical reactivity without external illumination. However, the mechanisms underlying cavity-altered chemistry remain unclear in large part because the experimental systems examined previously are too complex for detailed analysis of their reaction dynamics. Here, we experimentally investigate photolysis-induced reactions of cyanide (CN) radicals with strongly-coupled chloroform (CHCl$_3$) solvent molecules and examine the intracavity rates of photofragment recombination, solvent complexation, and hydrogen abstraction. We use a microfluidic optical cavity fitted with dichroic mirrors to facilitate vibrational strong coupling (VSC) of the C-H stretching mode of CHCl$_3$ while simultaneously permitting optical access at visible wavelengths. Ultrafast transient absorption experiments performed with cavities tuned on- and off-resonance reveal that VSC of the CHCl$_3$ C-H stretching transition does not significantly modify any measured rate constants, including those associated with the hydrogen abstraction reaction. This work represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental study of an elementary bimolecular reaction under VSC. We discuss how the conspicuous absence of cavity-altered effects in this system may provide insights into the mechanisms of modified ground state reactivity under VSC and help bridge the divide between experimental results and theoretical predictions in vibrational polariton chemistry.

Abstract:Three groups of chalcone derivatives and their analogues involving halogen atoms (X=F, Cl, Br) have been synthesized. Firstly, the nearly planar acyclic chalcone derivatives were inclined to undergo photo-induced stereospecific [2+2] cycloaddition, which triggered the crystals to exhibit macroscopic motions of bending or cracking. In particular, the single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation happened upon UV irradiation of the crystals, which was helpful for the understanding photomechanical effects. Cyclic 3,4-dihydronaphthalene-based chalcone analogues possess a more twisted conformation, and they tend to undergo trans-cis isomerization. No photomechanical effect was observed for the crystals of the cyclic chalcone analogues due to the lower isomerization rate. The twist degree of chroman-based molecules was in between of the first two, [2+2] cycloaddition and trans-cis isomerization simultaneously took place in crystals. Photo-induced bending and twisting were observed for the crystals of chroman-based chalcone analogues. Therefore, the differences in molecular dihedral angles in alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones were responsible for their photochemical characters and in turn to tune the photomechanical effects. In this work, a bridge between the molecular structures and solid-state photochemical reactions triggered photomechanical crystals is built.
Chiroptical Inversion Induced by Rotation of a Carbon-Carbon Single Bond: an Experimental and Theoretical Study.

Abstract:We propose a new strategy to construct chiral molecular switches with highly reversible and sensitive chiroptical responses to variations in the external environment. Its fundamental concept involves a stimuli-triggered exchange of two conformations presenting significantly different chiroptical properties through the rotation of a carbon-carbon single bond, as demonstrated by chiral Schiff bases s-1, s-2, and a salicylamide analogue s-3. Upon addition of base in solution, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of these molecular switches displayed unique changes featuring an inversion of the Cotton effect's signs, and the original CD profiles can be recoverd by acidification. Various spectroscopic studies as well as the conformational analysis combining with TDDFT computations allowed clear elucidation of the chiroptical inversion mechanism. It is expected that this kind of chiroptical switches is of great interest for molecular recognition, chemosensing, and the construction of molecular-scale devices. Furthermore, the present study indicates that the use of the conformational transition about a single bond may serve as the basis for designing chiroptical inversion systems.
Collisional alignment and molecular rotation control chemi-ionization of individual conformers

Abstract:The relationship between the shape of a molecule and its chemical reactivity is a central tenet in chemistry. However, the influence of the molecular geometry on reactivity can be subtle and result from several opposing effects. Using a novel crossed-molecular-beam experiment in which individual rotational quantum states of specific conformers of a molecule are separated, we study the chemi-ionization reaction of hydroquinone with metastable neon atoms. We show that collision-induced alignment of the reaction partners caused by geometry-dependent long-range forces crucially influences reaction pathways for distinct conformers which is, however, countered by molecular rotation. We demonstrate how the interplay between molecular geometry, chemical steering forces and rotational dynamics govern the outcome of reactions and illustrate the capability of advanced molecule-control techniques to unravel these effects.

Stereodynamic control of overlapping resonances in cold molecular collisions

Abstract:Stereodynamic control of resonant molecular collisions has emerged as a new frontier in cold molecule research. Recent experimental studies have focused on weakly interacting molecular systems such as HD collisions with H$_2$, D$_2$ and He. We report here the possibility of such control in strongly interacting systems taking rotational relaxation in cold collisions of HCl and H$_2$. Using explicit quantum scattering calculations in full six dimensions it is shown that robust control of the collision dynamics is possible even when multiple (overlapping) shape-resonances coexist in a narrow energy range, indicating that cold stereochemistry offers great promise for many molecules beyond simple systems. We demonstrate a striking case where two prominent peaks in overlapping resonances are switched-off simultaneously by suitable alignment of the HCl molecule.
