Abstract:Type-II heterostructure CdTe/CdSe core/shell nanocrystals (quantum dots, QDs) are explored as sensitizers in a QD-sensitized photoelectrochemical solar cell. These QDs comprise a hole-localizing core and an electron-localizing shell. Among their advantages is the significant red shift of the absorption edge of the heterostructured QD relative to its two constituents due to spatially indirect absorption leading to improved absorption characteristics, intraparticle exciton dissociation upon photoexcitation, and a relatively small content of the less abundant tellurium element. Upon incorporation in a sensitized solar cell utilizing a porous TiO2 and a polysulfide electrolyte, these QDs exhibited efficient charge separation and high internal quantum efficiency despite hole localization in the CdTe core. Monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) measurement shows a spectrally broad photoresponse spanning the whole visible spectrum and reaching up to similar to 900 nm.
Synthesis and Characterization of Bi2S3 Quantum Dot-Sensitized TiO2 Nanorod Arrays Coated with ZnSe Passivation Layers

Abstract:Stable Bi2S3 quantum dots (QDs) prepared by a modified successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method were used to decorate TiO2 nanorod (TNR) arrays and enhance their photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. In the above procedure, elemental sulfur vapor was utilized as a precursor instead of aqueous Na2S to prevent the photodecomposition of QDs, whereas the hydrolysis of the Bi precursor (Bi(NO3)(3)) was prevented by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizer, and interfacial charge recombination was inhibited by depositing ZnSe passivation layers. The prepared photoelectrodes were subjected to morphological, structural, compositional, and optical/PEC property analyses, and the ideal bandgap and high absorption coefficient of Bi2S3 QDs was shown to result in enhanced visible light absorption properties and PEC performance of QD-sensitized TNR thin films, as compared to those of bare TNR films. The deposition of ZnSe on sensitized films resulted in further PEC performance enhancement, achieving a photocurrent density of 0.11 mA/cm(2) and an electron lifetime of 37.9 ms, which was attributed to the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination by ZnSe passivation layers. Thus, the facile synthesis and environmentally friendly nature of Bi2S3 QD-sensitized TNR films coated with ZnSe passivation layers make them promising components of solar energy-driven devices.
Wave-Function Engineering of CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Quantum Dots for Enhanced Electron Transfer to a TiO2Substrate

Abstract:In this paper, we have synthesized a series of core/shell quantum dots (QDs) for the purpose of enhancing the electron transfer from the dots to a TiO2 substrate. We make use of the fact that CdSe is a small-bandgap material compared with CdS; therefore, in a common CdSe/CdS core/shell QD, the photo-excited electron is confined deeply in the CdSe core. By special construction of the CdS/CdSe core/shell QDs, referred as reversed type-I, the electron wave function will distribute largely in the shell region. This facilitates the transfer of the electron from the QD to the TiO2 substrate, resulting in significantly improved electron-injection efficiency. Such an enhanced electron-injection efficiency was confirmed by fluorescence lifetime decay measurements, showing the largest lifetime reduction after that the QDs were adsorbed on the TiO2 surface. The reversed type-I CdS/CdSe QDs show a much higher photon-to-current conversion efficiency than type-I CdSe/CdS and CdSe QDs without shell. Furthermore, by chemical-bath depositing of CdS on the QD-sensitized electrode to form a quantum-well structure, the electron recombination between the QDs and the redox couple was reduced, hence further enhancing the electron-injection efficiency. The absorbed-photon-to-current efficiency of the quantum well CdS/CdSe/CdS sensitized solar cells reaches a value as high as 60%.
Strategy for Performance Enhancement of Cd1-XZnXTe/CdS Core/shell Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells Through Band Adjustment

Abstract:Novel type-II core/shell structure quantum dos have been synthesized for solar cell photoelectrode material. Cd0.64Zn0.36Te and CdS were chosen as a core and shell, respectively, to generate type-II core/shell structure quantum dos (QDs). Density functional theory was employed to explore the energy structure of Cd1-xZnxTe/CdS core/shell QDs, revealing that introduction of Zn element is a feasible strategy to prepare CdTe/CdS based QDs with type-II core/shell structure. Then, Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs were synthesized by aqueous phase method. Microscopic measurements showed that Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs have high crystalline quality. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy together with optical spectra indicated an upward shift of the Cd0.64Zn0.36Te conduction band edge compared with CdTe, as also evidenced by systematic density functional theory based first principle calculation. Photoluminescence decay measurement also indicated the enhanced electron injection rate and decreased charge recombination of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QD sensitized TiO2 films. In addition, by optimizing the deposition cycles of the CdS shell, the power conversion efficiency of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QDs sensitized solar cells was enhanced.
AgInS2/CdSe Type-II Core/Shell Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cells with an Efficiency of 11.75% Under 0.1 sun

Abstract:We report the fabrication and photovoltaic performance of a new type-II AgInS2/CdSe core/shell quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). AgInS2 core and CdSe shell QDs are grown using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. X-ray diffraction reveals the orthorhombic and cubic structures for AgInS2 and CdSe, respectively. Optical spectra reveal the bandgaps of 1.91, 1.78, and 1.57 eV for AgInS2, CdSe, and AgInS2/CdSe, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show a type-II band alignment for the AgInS2/CdSe QDs. Liquid-junction AgInS2/CdSe QDSSCs are fabricated using the polysulfide electrolyte. Single-layered AgInS2 and CdSe QDSSCs are prepared simultaneously for comparison. The AgInS2/CdSe cell yields a PCE of 8.39% (Voc = 0.64 V, FF = 56.0%) under 1 sun, significantly higher than the single-layered AgInS2 (3.04%) and CdSe (3.67%) QDSSCs. Moreover, the Jsc increases from 7.72 in single-layered AgInS2 to 23.28 mA/cm2 in core/shell AgInS2/CdSe. The PCE of AgInS2/CdSe further increases to 11.75% under 0.1 sun. The PCE of 8.39% is comparable to the best PCE (8.26%) of Dy-doped CdTe/CdS for all type-II core/shell QDSSCs reported. The improved performance of the core/shell QDSSCs is attributed to the spatial separation of electron/hole, cascade energy structure, broader absorption band, and a possible indirect interfacial transition.

Abstract:High quality Mn2+-doped CdTe quantum dots (QDs), Co2+-doped CdTe QDs and Mn2+&Co2+ co-doped CdTe QDs were successfully synthesized via an aqueous phase method with mercaptopropanoic acid (MPA) ligands. The doped QDs maintain the same zinc blende structure of CdTe by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Mn2+-doped CdTe QDs and Co2+-doped CdTe QDs both show a red-shift on absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra compared to pure CdTe QDs. In addition, Mn2+-doped CdTe QDs show a significant increase in the PL lifetime due to an orbitally forbidden d-d transition, which is of benefit to the reduction of electron recombination loss. Co2+ doping has a more matched doping energy level. In view of this, Mn2+&Co2+ co-doped CdTe QDs were applied as sensitizers for quantum dot sensitized solar cells, resulting in a significantly enhanced efficiency.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) with core/shell architecture can offer tailored electronic and optical properties which are promising for various optoelectronic applications. Here, we report the growth of multifunctional AgGaS2 (AGS)/CdSeS core/shell QDs via a simple two-step synthetic method. In comparison to the bare AGS QDs, as-synthesized core/shell QDs revealed enhanced visible light absorption, red-shifted emission and prolonged exciton lifetime, demonstrating the type II band alignment of the AGS core and CdSeS shell structure for improved charge separation/transfer, as further verified by the measured ultrafast carrier dynamics. The heterostructured core/shell QDs were used to fabricate both the photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells and photodetectors for efficient solar energy conversion and light detection, showing a maximum photocurrent density of ~4.8 mA/cm2 under visible light irradiation and a detectivity of 3.3 × 1010 Jones under wavelength of 510 nm, respectively. These findings indicate that the rational design of core/shell architecture is promising to tailor the optoelectronic properties and band structure of QDs for versatile and high-performance optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:In order to improve the chemical stability of quantum dots in application for quantum dot sensitized solar cells, we prepared CdxZn1-xTe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with type-II structure by an aqueous phase process using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizing agent. We investigated the composition of Zn and Cd in CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots by X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the cubic zinc combines structure of CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots. In addition, we investigated the optical absorption, fluorescence emission and emission decay of samples, indicating that the energy level of ternary quantum dots can be controlled by both size and composition. Therefore, quantum dots with type-II structure can be prepared easily, which is beneficial to the improvement of fluorescence lifetime. We find that there are two decay processes in the emission decay kinetics of CdxZn1-xTe and core/shell CdxZn1-xTe-CdS quantum dots. The average lifetime of the photoexcited carriers is 24.07 ns and 39.80 ns, respectively.
Electron Injection and Photovoltaic Properties in Cdse/Zns Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized and adsorbed onto nanocrystalline TiO2 films for application in quantum dot sensitized solar cells(QDSSCs). Femtosecond transient absorption spectra was measured to investigate the effect of the ZnS shell coating on electron injection from CdSe QDs to nanocrystalline TiO2 films. The results showed a decrease in electron injection rate from 7.14x10(11) to 2.38x10(11) s(-1) after ZnS shell coating, which means the electron injection rate only remained 1/3. The fill factor(FF) and stability of QDSSCs were improved by ZnS coating, but the photocurrent decreased, resulting in an overall decrease in efficiency. The slower electron injection rate is found to be the main cause for this decrease in photocurrent and efficiency, which matches well with the photovoltaic property test. These results provide information for optimizing the current and efficiency of QDSSCs employing core/shell QDs.

Abstract:FeS2-sensitized ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays were fabricated and used as the photoanodes for quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The cell performance of the ZnO/ZnS nanorod arrays after sensitization was better than that of ZnO-based nanorod arrays without sensitizing treatment. Pyrite FeS2 was found to be an effective photosensitizer for QDSSCs. Various QDSSCs were assembled using different counter electrodes, such as Pt, FeS2 nanorods and FeS2 nanoparticles, and comparisons of cell performance as well as catalytic activity were made among them.
Green Synthesis of CdS/CISe Core‐Shell Structured Quantum Dots and Their Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract:Inverted type‐I CdS/CISe core‐shell quantum dots are synthesized through the thermal injection method in a green system. The CdS/CISe quantum dots exhibit quantum effects associated with the CISe shell layer. Schottky solar cells packaged with CdS/CISe core‐shell quantum dots show better performance, with Jsc, FF, and PCE increased to 0.56 mA cm−2, 0.44, and 1.01% respectively. Quantum dots (QDs) of I‐III‐VI2 ternary compounds, such as CuInSe2 (CISe) and CuInS2 (CIS), have broad application prospects as light‐absorbing layers in solar cells due to their excellent photoelectric properties. Nevertheless, the presence of large numbers of surface defects in quantum dots will affect their performance. In this study, inverted type‐I CdS/CISe core‐shell QDs are successfully synthesized through thermal injection method in triethylene glycol, which is green and safe. By changing the molar ratios of CdS and CISe QDs, the components and optical properties of core‐shell QDs are intensively studied by using different characterization methods (XRD, TEM, EDS, UV–vis, Raman, and fluorescence spectrum). The solar cells with the structure of FTO/TiO2/CdS/CdS/CISe/Mo are assembled, where the CdS/CISe core‐shell QDs are used as absorption layers. The prepared devices exhibit an efficiency of 1.01% under an AM 1.5 G spectrum with a light intensity of 100 mW cm−2.

Abstract:Metal ion doping is an effective strategy for enhancing the photoelectric properties of quantum dots (QDs). In this study, Zn-doped CdSSe composite QDs (ZnCdSSe) were synthesized using a two-step hydrothermal ion exchange method. The synthesis process involved the exchange reaction of Cd 2+ with Zn 2+ , followed by the exchange reaction of Se 2− with S 2− , based on ZnS templates. The morphology, composition and crystalline phase of synthesized QDs were characterized using X-ray and electron-based techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS. The results indicate ZnCdSSe QDs were synthesized while preserving a similar morphology to that of ZnCdS. Performance tests demonstrated that quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) equipped with ZnCdSSe/TiO 2 photoanodes achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.61% by optimizing the hydrothermal reaction temperature and time. This efficiency was 33.2% higher than that of CdSSe (2.17%) QDSSCs synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal exchange reaction using CdS templates. The significant enhancement in PCE can be attributed to improvements in light absorption and charge carrier transport. Notably, Zn doping reduced interface charge recombination and prolong electronic lifetime (τ n ), facilitating more effective charge collection in QDSSCs.

Abstract:Colloidal core/shell heterostructured quantum dots (QDs) possessing quasi-type II band structure have demonstrated effective surface passivation and prolonged exciton lifetime, leading to enhanced charge separation/transfer efficiencies that are promising for photovoltaic device applications. Herein, we synthesized CuInS2 (CIS)/CdS core/shell heterostructured QDs and manipulated the optoelectronic properties via controlling the CdS shell thickness. The shell-thickness-dependent optical properties indicate the existence of a quasi-type II band structure in such core/shell QDs, which was verified by ultrafast spectroscopy and theoretical simulations. These quasi-type II core/shell QDs having various shell thicknesses are used as light absorbers for the fabrication of solar-driven QDs-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices, exhibiting an optimized photocurrent density of similar to 6.0 mA/cm(2) and excellent stability under simulated AM 1.5G solar illumination. The results demonstrate that quasi-type II CIS/CdS core/shell heterostructured QDs with tailored optoelectronic properties are promising to realize high-performance QDs-based solar energy conversion devices for the production of solar fuels.

Abstract:We present here the successful fabrication of core-shell constructed CdZnSe@ZnSe colloidal alloy quantum dots with tunable optical properties using a hot-injection method, demonstrating great potential in photovoltaic devices. Upon employment as charge extraction materials in all-inorganic perovskite solar cells, an enhanced power conversion efficiency up to 8.65% has been achieved arising from the boosted charge transfer dynamics.

Abstract:Colloidal CdSe@CdS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) have been prepared and exploited as inorganic dyes to sensitize a large-band-gap TiO2 layer for QD-sensitized solar cells. The sensitized films were prepared by alternating the layer-by-layer deposition of water-soluble semiconductor QDs and polycations over mesoscopic TiO2 films. The multilayer build-up, monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy shows an increase in the film absorbance with the number of adsorbed CdSe@CdS layers. The photoluminescence (PL) and photoelectrochemical properties of the multilayers were investigated. The photovoltaic performance of QD-sensitized solar cells is strongly dependent on the film structure and component. The incorporation of the electron mediators of [Co(Phen)3]2+ during the deposition process remarkably enhanced the photocurrent intensity in comparison to that in case of QD/polyelectrolyte multilayers.

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2is functionalized by 3-mercaptopropyl trimethyoxysilane (MPTMS) to anchor CdSe quantum dots (QDs). The resulting TiO2/CdSe is combined with solid-state electrolyte (CuSCN) to form solar cells. It is found that the efficiency of electron injection from QDs to TiO2can be improved owing to the substitution of the long chains of organic capping agents at the surface of QDs with MPTMS. The hydrolyzate of MPTMS forms an insulating barrier layer to reduce the recombination at the TiO2/CdSe interface, leading to the increase of open-circuit voltage (Voc).
Graphene Quantum Dots Assisted Photovoltage and Efficiency Enhancement in Cdse Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:CdSe quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) modified with graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been successfully achieved in this work for the first time. Satisfactorily, the optimized photovoltage (V-oc) of the modified QDSCs was approximately 0.04 V higher than that of plain CdSe QDSCs, consequently improving the photovoltaic performance of the resulting QDSCs. Served as a novel coating on the CdSe QD sensitized photoanode, GQDs played a vital role in improving Vac due to the suppressed charge recombination which has been confirmed by electron impedance spectroscopy as well as transient photovoltage decay measurements. Moreover, different adsorption sequences, concentration and deposition time of GQDs have also been systematically investigated to boost the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of CdSe QDSCs. After the coating of CdSe with GQDs, the resulting champion CdSe QDSCs exhibited an improved PCE of 6.59% under AM 1.5G full one sun illumination. Octahedron Shaped Lead Sulfide Nanocrystals As Counter Electrodes for Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:PbS nanocrystals with octahedron shape are synthesized by a low temperature approach with presence of cation/anion surfactants in aqueous solution. CdS quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) based on these novel octahedron shaped PbS counter electrodes (CEs) are fabricated for the first time, achieving PCE of 1.54%. It is observed that the octahedron shaped PbS CE shows higher electrocatalytic activity compared with the Pt CE, indicating that the PbS nanocrystals with a uniformly distributed size is a superior candidate as CEs for QDSSCs application. This work may provide new route for preparing PbS from aqueous solvent medium through a simple synthesis route.
Study on silicon quantum dots sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) were synthesized in a nonthermal plasma system. Hydrosilylation was employed to modify the surface of Si QDs. The photoluminescence quantum yield of the hydrosilylated Si QDs under short wavelength excitation was about 30%. Hydrosilylated Si QDs were then dispersed in an organic solvent. By means of immersing TiO2 nanorods into the resulting solution, Si QDs were effectively adhered to the surface of TiO2 nanorods. A Si-QD-sensitized solar cell with the conversion efficiency of 0.1% was finally obtained.
