Abstract:Although the relation between temperature level and stroke mortality has been observed before [ 1 Rothwell P.M. Wroe S.J. Slattery J. Warlow C.P. Is stroke incidence related to season or temperature? The Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project. Lancet. 1996; 347: 934-936 Abstract PubMed Scopus (81) Google Scholar , 2 Pan W. Li L. Tsai M. Temperature extremes and mortality from coronary heart disease and cerebral infarction in elderly Chinese. Lancet. 1995; 345: 353-355 PubMed Scopus (226) Google Scholar ], it is still unknown whether temperature variation within one day, e.g. diurnal temperature range (DTR), is a risk factor for acute stroke death independent of the corresponding temperature level. We hypothesized that large diurnal temperature change might add additional environmental stress onto human cerebrovascular system, thereby composing a risk factor for acute stroke death. We used daily weather and mortality data from Shanghai, China to test our hypothesis with both time-series and case-crossover analyses.
