Abstract:The heterogeneous oxidation catalyzed by supported gold nanoparticles has been relatively well studied. In comparison, the oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by ligand-supported gold complexes was rarely reported. Herein a general method is demonstrated to oxidize secondary and primary benzyl and allylic alcohols to carbonyl compounds via Au(I) catalyzed reaction in air and water. Primary mechanistic studies indicated that the catalytic pathway is different from those catalyzed by solid-supported gold nanoparticles.
Facile Construction of Leaf-Like WO3 Nanoflakes Decorated on G-C3n4 Towards Efficient Oxidation of Alcohols under Mild Conditions

Abstract:Herein, a well-defined nanostructure with leaf-like WO3 nanoflakes decorated on g-C3N4 was constructed via a facile impregnation and subsequent annealing method. The prepared WO3/g-C3N4 exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of alcohols under mild conditions, and satisfactory yields to the corresponding carbonyl compounds were achieved without using non-green additives and organic solvents. It was found that the enhanced catalytic activity could be attributed to the enlarged specific surface area, the well-defined nanostructure, and the strong interactions between WO3 and g-C3N4. The distribution of WO3 nanoflakes on the g-C3N4 support increased the number of catalytically active sites for this reaction. XPS analysis suggested that a synergistic electron effect occurred because of the electron transfer from g-C3N4 to WO3. Moreover, the effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, oxidant amount and catalyst dosage on catalytic activity were investigated. Recycle studies showed that the catalyst could be readily recovered and no obvious decrease in catalytic efficiency was observed after seven cycles. The present catalytic system can afford a wide substrate scope for both aryl and alkyl alcohols with superior conversion and selectivity. Also, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed to better illustrate the catalytic process. This work might provide a facile construction of a well-defined WO3/g-C3N4 catalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols using a sustainable approach.

Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles supported on polymorphs of gallia (α-, β-, and γ-Ga2O3) were evaluated for the solvent-free liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol by molecular oxygen. High selectivity to benzaldehyde was obtained under the reaction conditions of 130°C, 5atm and 5h in an autoclave. The Au/γ-Ga2O3 catalyst was also evaluated for oxidation of a range of alcohols using mesitylene as solvent under flowing oxygen at atmospheric pressure and 90°C. Under these conditions the conversion of benzyl alcohol reached 100% after 2h and it was demonstrated that the catalyst can be recycled four times without significant loss of activity. The structural data (TEM, XPS and TPSR of 2-propanol adsorption) along with the catalytic results indicate that the unique dehydrogenation capabilities of the Au/γ-gallia system are responsible for the enhanced activity achieved in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:Oxidative coupling of alcohols is of great practical importance due to the wide range of synthetic applications using esters. Controlling the selectivity toward production of specific esters in cross-coupling is a long-sought goal in designing efficient synthetic routes. We report a quantitative study of the factors that determine the esterification selectivity in the oxidative cross-coupling of alcohols mediated by oxygen-covered Au(111). The high reactivity of gold is attributed to the activity of atomic oxygen bound to Au particles in forming surface-bound alkoxy species. The relative surface concentrations of alkoxys and the ease of the β-H elimination play critical roles in determining the product distribution. For a given reactant composition the surface concentration of alkoxys is skewed toward the higher molecular weight alcohol in the mixture exposed to the surface. Vibrational spectroscopic studies reveal that the relative stabilities of alkoxys parallel the gas phase acidities of the corresponding alcohols, in agreement with other coinage metal surfaces. Further, the activation energies for β-H cleavage of alkoxys are found to follow the descending order: E(methoxy) > E(ethoxy) > E(butoxy). The combination of these factors optimizes cross-coupling in a reactant mixture containing an excess of the lower molecular weight alcohol. The excellent match of product distribution between our low-pressure, single-crystal study and that observed for atmospheric pressure, liquid-phase reactions over supported gold catalysts provides strong evidence that the mechanistic insights gained from fundamental surface science study can serve as guiding principles in controlling selectivity under realistic catalytic conditions.

Abstract:Highly active aerobic oxidation of alcohols under mild conditions is achieved by using the catalyst constituted of Au nanoparticles supported on mixed NiAl-oxide derived from its corresponding layered double hydroxide. Besides the contribution of electronic interaction, the enhanced catalytic property of the Au catalyst is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the Au and the support on reaction mechanism. The unique support with loading Au nanoparticles comes through structural interconversion between the mixed oxide and the layered double hydroxide upon the water exchange during the reaction, which is beneficial to the fast removal of water from the Au surface and then accelerates the restore of the active sites of Au for oxidation of alcohols. Abstract:Molecular level understanding of the mechanism of oxidative coupling of alcohols on metallic Au(111) activated by oxygen is achieved through a combination of experiments and theoretical calculations. The facility of the beta-H elimination of the alkoxys, which increases with the length of the alkyl chain, is identified to be critical in determining the product distributions. Dioxymethylene serves as a formaldehyde reservoir in the cross-coupling reaction between methanol and formaldehyde through its reversible formation and decomposition, contributing to the high selectivity for the coupling products.
Solvent-free Selective Oxidation of Alcohols by Molecular Oxygen over Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Β-Mno2 Nanorods

Abstract:The performances of a series of MnO2-supported gold nanocatalysts with varying gold loading were studied in the solvent-free selective oxidation of alcohols by molecular oxygen. The gold was deposited onto the beta-MnO2 support, featuring one dimensional rod-like morphology, by means of homogeneous deposition-precipitation. The catalytic activity of the catalyst for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol was found to increase with increasing gold loading, with the highest specific activity in terms of turnover frequencies (TOF) being achieved over the catalyst with 5 wt.% gold loading. Both XRD and TEM results showed that the majority of Au particles of various catalysts have diameters in the range of 2-6 nm. Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) results indicated that the reducibility of MnO2 was significantly enhanced with the surface-deposited gold nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the coexistence of both oxidized and metallic gold species on the surface of MnO2, the composition of which depends critically on the gold loading. The superior specific activity of the catalyst with 5% gold loading was attributed to the presence of higher amounts of positive gold species and more surface oxygen vacancy sites resulting from stronger metal-support interactions as compared to other catalysts. Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for the selective oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes through direct mechanocatalysis, employing a gold-coated milling vessel as catalyst and air as the oxidation agent. By adjusting milling frequency, media, and duration, high catalytic efficiencies and selectivities are achieved. Remarkably, yields of up to 99% are obtained for specific substrates, with a turnover number (TON) of 8200 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.77 s-1, surpassing existing alternatives. Confirmation of the catalytic reaction indeed occurring on the milling tool surface was achieved through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract:Whether gold is catalytically active on its own has been hotly debated since the discovery of gold-based catalysis in the 1980s. One of the central controversies is on the O-2 activation mechanism. This work, by investigating aerobic phenylethanol oxidation on gold nanoparticles in aqueous solution, demonstrates that gold nanoparticles are capable to activate O-2 at the solid-liquid interface. Extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with the per-iodic continuum solvation model have been utilized to provide a complete reaction network of aerobic alcohol oxidation. We show that the adsorption of O-2 is very sensitive to the environment: the presence of water can double the O-2 adsorption energy to similar to 0.4 eV at commonly available edge sites of nanoparticles (similar to 4 nm) because of its strongly polarized nature in adsorption. In alcohol oxidation, the hydroxyl bond of alcohol can break only with the help of an external base at ambient conditions, while the consequent alpha-C-H bond breaking occurs on pure Au, both on edges and terraces, with a reaction barrier of 0.7 eV, which is the rate-determining step. The surface H from the alpha-C-H bond cleavage can be easily removed by O-2 and OOH via a H2O2 pathway without involving atomic O. We find that Au particles become negatively charged at the steady state because of a facile proton-shift equilibrium on surface, OOH + OH <-> O-2 + H2O. The theoretical results are utilized to rationalize experimental findings and provide a firm basis for utilizing nanopartide gold as aerobic oxidation catalysts in aqueous surroundings.

Abstract:Alcohols are selectively oxidized to their corresponding aldehydes catalytically via mechanochemistry using a gold-coated milling vessel. Superior catalytic efficiency and selectivity was achieved through the meticulous modulation of milling frequency, duration, and media, complemented by controlled heating. Achieving a turnover number (TON) near 8200 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.77 s-1, the system notably surpasses existing alternatives. Utilizing atmospheric oxygen as the primary oxidant facilitated significant yields, with the highest reaching up to 99% for selected substrates. The catalytic reaction indeed occurring on the surface of the vibrating milling ball was confirmed via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This study highlights the pivotal role of operational parameter optimization in enhancing catalysis, emphasizing the method's sustainability and broad applicability across various alcohol substrates. The findings contribute significantly to green chemistry, offering an efficient, sustainable approach to alcohol oxidation.

Abstract:Activation of molecular oxygen to realize selective oxidation is challenging. We employ a heterogeneous ligand method to prepare a vanadium carbon catalyst (V–C catalyst) of high efficiency in alcohol oxidation via oxygen activation. Principal component analysis revealed that the chemisorbed oxygen and pentavalent vanadium oxide are crucial in catalyst performance. Isotopic labeling, electron paramagnetic resonance, and control experiments confirmed that the V–C catalyst activates molecular oxygen to singlet oxygen or its analogue and carries out the reaction. A kinetic study and in situ React-IR spectra illustrated that the main reaction route is the O2 activation to 1O2 or its analogue and oxidizes the substrate through C–H bond activation. We demonstrate the efficiency of the V–C catalyst in selectively oxidizing the hydroxyl group in other substrates, including benzyl alcohols, methyl lactate, and ethyl lactate biomass-based alcohols. This will guide the development of highly active nonprecious metal catalysts for activating O2 for aerobic oxidation.

Abstract:The solvent-free selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes with molecular oxygen is highly attractive yet challenging. Interfacial sites between a metal and an oxide support are crucial in determining the activity and selectivity of such heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate that the use of supported single-atom catalysts (SACs) leads to high activity and selectivity in this reaction. The significantly increased number of interfacial sites, resulting from the presence of individually dispersed metal atoms on the support, renders SACS one or two orders of magnitude more active than the corresponding nanoparticle (NP) catalysts. Lattice oxygen atoms activated at interfacial sites were found to be more selective than O-2 activated on metal NPs in oxidizing the alcohol substrate. This work demonstrates for the first time that the number of interfacial sites is maximized in SACs, providing a new avenue for improving catalytic performance by developing appropriate SACs for alcohol oxidation and other reactions occurring at metal-support interfacial sites.

Abstract:Partial oxidation of alcohols is a topic of great interest in the field of gold catalysis. In this work, we provide evidence that the partial oxidation of allyl alcohol to its corresponding aldehyde, acrolein, over oxygen-precovered gold surfaces occurs via multiple reaction pathways. Utilizing temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) with isotopically labeled water and oxygen species, reactive molecular beam scattering, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the reaction mechanism for allyl alcohol oxidation is influenced by the relative proportions of atomic oxygen and hydroxyl species on the gold surface. Both atomic oxygen and hydroxyl species are shown to be active for allyl alcohol oxidation, but each displays a different pathway of oxidation, as indicated by TPD measurements and DFT calculations. The hydroxyl hydrogen of allyl alcohol is readily abstracted by either oxygen adatoms or adsorbed hydroxyl species on the gold surface to generate a surface-bound allyloxide intermediate, which then undergoes α-dehydrogenation via interaction with an oxygen adatom or surface hydroxyl species to generate acrolein. Mediation of a second allyloxide with the hydroxyl species lowers the activation barrier for the α-dehydrogenation process. A third pathway exists in which two hydroxyl species recombine to generate water and an oxygen adatom, which subsequently dehydrogenates allyloxide. This work may aid in the understanding of oxidative catalysis over gold and the effect of water therein.

Abstract:A highly enantioselective oxidative cyclopropanation of 1,6-enynes catalyzed by cationic Au(I)/chiral phophoramidite complexes is presented. The new method provides convenient access to densely functionalized bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes bearing three contiguous quaternary and tertiary stereogenic centers with high enantioselectivity (up to e.r. 98:2). Control experiments suggest that the quinoline moiety of the β-gold vinyloxyquinolinium intermediate in the reaction plays an important role in promoting good enantioselectivity through a transitional auxiliary effect in the transition state.
