Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is of great significance for alleviating environmental pollution and energy shortages. Double transition metal oxide semiconductors are a commonly used material library in the field of photocatalysis. However, there are a few reports about bimetallic oxide photocatalysts for CO2 reduction by using solar energy. Here, we report a bimetallic oxide catalyst FeVO4 with durable photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity. Band structures of the FeVO4 semiconductor were investigated by first-principles calculations. FeVO4 is an indirect band gap semiconductor with a band gap of approximately 2.25 eV, the absorption edge of which can reach 550 nm. The morphology of the FeVO4 catalyst can be tuned by using various synthesis methods. The FeVO4 catalyst with a nanowire structure was prepared by a hydrothermal method. The FeVO4 nanowires have a larger specific surface area and more oxygen vacancies than FeVO4 particle samples synthesized by solid-phase sintering. Exposure to numerous basic active sites facilitates the adsorption and activation of CO2, thereby greatly improving the catalytic performance of FeVO4 nanowires for CO2 reduction.
InVO4/β-AgVO3 Nanocomposite As a Direct Z-Scheme Photocatalyst Toward Efficient and Selective Visible-Light-Driven CO2 Reduction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to solar fuel is a promising route to alleviate the ever-growing energy crisis and global warming. Herein, to enhance photoconversion efficiency of CO2 reduction, a series of direct Z-scheme composites consisting of β-AgVO3 nanoribbons and InVO4 nanoparticles (InVO4/β-AgVO3) are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and subsequent in situ growth process. The prepared InVO4/β-AgVO3 composites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity for reduction of CO2 to CO under visible-light illumination. A CO evolution rate of 12.61 μmol·g-1·h-1 is achieved over the optimized 20% In-Ag without any cocatalyst or sacrificial agent, which is 11 times larger than that yielded by pure InVO4 (1.12 μmol·g-1·h-1). Moreover, the CO selectivity is more than 93% over H2 production from the side reaction of H2O reduction. Significantly, based on the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) and in situ irradiated XPS tests, it is proposed that the synthesized InVO4/β-AgVO3 catalysts comply with the direct Z-scheme transfer mechanism. Significantly improved photocatalytic activities for selective CO2 reduction could be primarily ascribed to effective separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and enhanced reducibility of photoelectrons at the conduction band of InVO4. This work provides a new insight for constructing highly efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction systems toward solar fuel generation.

Oxygen-Doped Red Carbon Nitride: Enhanced Charge Separation and Light Absorption for Robust CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.
Mesoporous cobalt tungstate nanoparticles for efficient and stable visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Ternary transition metal tungstates with low cost, high stability, and narrow band gap have exhibited great opportunities for photocatalysis, but their application in CO2 photoreduction is much less reported. Herein, we present the synthesis of mesoporous ternary cobalt tungstate (CoWO4) nanostructures as an advanced cocatalyst for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. A series of CoWO4 samples are prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal method at different temperatures and fully checked by diverse physicochemical characterizations. The crystallinity and microstructure of CoWO4 can be facilely modulated by changing the synthesis temperature. In a classic tandem visible-light-sensitized system, the optimal CoWO4 cocatalyst affords excellent activity and stability for deoxygenative CO2 reduction, with a CO-yielding rate of 52.1 μmol h−1 (i.e. 17.4 mmol h−1 g−1), which is 22 times higher than the system without the cocatalyst. The collective photoelectrochemical measurements disclose that the cocatalyst can promote separation and migration of the charge carriers and provide abundant active sites to activate and reduce CO2 molecules, thus boosting CO2 reduction. This work may promote more research attention on exploring ternary transition metal tungstates as high-efficiency cofactors for CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Novel crystalline FeVO 4 nanopolyhedron (FVO NPH) photoelectrodes are successfully prepared by using an in-situ solid-state transformation from hydrothermal FeOOH films via adding vanadium precursor and following thermal treatments. The FVO NPH photoelectrodes possess uniformly dispersed polyhedral nanocrystals that directly grow on the conductive substrate with tunable film thicknesses. The unique morphology enables them showing outstanding photoelectrocatalytic performance, and the optimized FVO NPH photoelectrode, which is annealed at 550 °C for 4 h with a film thickness of ~560 nm, exhibits excellent photocurrent densities of ~0.47 and ~0.68 mA cm -2 at 1.0 and 1.2 V vs Ag/AgCl, respectively. After decorating CoPi co-catalyst, the FVO/CoPi shows a highly efficient water splitting performance with O 2 and H 2 evolution rates of 7.53 and 15.32 μmol cm -2 h -1 , respectively, which are ~1.88 and ~1.80 times, respectively, of these of the FVO NPH. The proposed photoelectrodes also show excellently chemical and physical stabilities in solar water splitting. This is the first time reported the preparation of well-organized nanostructured FeVO 4 films, which warrants further optimization studies on morphologies and compositions of FeVO 4 -based photoelectrodes.

Hierarchical Double-Shelled CoP Nanocages for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction is considered an appealing strategy to mitigate the energy crisis and environmental issues, whereas the reactivity is limited due to the difficulties in activation of inert CO2 molecule and efficient transportation of photoinduced carriers. Herein, we report the design of novel Fe doped CoP hierarchical double-shelled nanocages (Fe-CoP HDSNC) via a MOF-templated approach for highly efficient visible-light-driven CO2 reduction. The unique hierarchical double-shelled hollow architectures can greatly shorten the charge transfer distances and also expose abundant reactive sites. Moreover, Fe atoms doping is able to reduce the CO2 activation energy barrier through stabilizing the *COOH intermediates and promote the CO desorption by destabilizing the CO* adduct. As expected, the Fe-CoP HDSNC achieves an unprecedented catalytic efficiency in visible-light-driven CO2 reduction with an up to 3.25% apparent quantum yield and 90.3% CO selectivity, superior to most of the state-of-the-art photocatalysts under comparable conditions. Electrostatic Field Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Conversion on BiVO4 Nanowires

Abstract:Abstract The recombination loss of photo-carriers in photocatalytic systems fatally determines the energy conversion efficiency of photocatalysts. In this work, an electrostatic field was used to inhibit the recombination of photo-carriers in photocatalysts by separating photo-holes and photo-electrons in space. As a model structure, (010) facet-exposed BiVO 4 nanowires were grown on PDMS-insulated piezo-substrate of piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The PZT substrate will generate an electrostatic field under a certain stress, and the photocatalytic behavior of BiVO 4 nanowires is influenced by the electrostatic field. Our results showed that the photocatalytic performance of the BiVO 4 nanowires in CO 2 reduction in the negative electrostatic field is enhanced to 5.5-fold of that without electrostatic field. Moreover, the concentration of methane in the products was raised from 29% to 64%. The enhanced CO 2 reduction efficiency is mainly attributed to the inhibited recombination loss of photo-carriers in the BiVO 4 nanowires. The increased energy of photo-carriers and the enhanced surface absorption to polar molecules, which are CO in this case, were also play important roles in improving the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalyst and product selectivity. This work proposed an effective strategy to improve photo-carriers separation/transfer dynamics in the photocatalytic systems, which will also be a favorable reference for photovoltaic and photodetecting devices.

Abstract:Utilizing solar energy to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into chemical fuels could simultaneously mitigate the greenhouse effect and fossil fuel crisis. Herein, a heterogeneous photocatalyst of ZnO nanofiber deposited by Pt nanoparticles was successfully synthesized toward photocatalytic CO2 reduction via radio-frequency thermal plasma and photo-deposition method. The Pt nanoparticles were introduced on the surface of ZnO nanofibers to broaden the light absorption and utilization, increase the additional reaction active sites and facilitate the separation of photo-generated electron/hole pairs. Combined with the natural advantages of short transfer path of charge carriers and self-support effecting in humid reaction environment for nanofibers, the Pt/ZnO hetero-junction nanocomposites displayed superior photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction with respect to bare ZnO nanofibers, affording a CO-production rate as high as 45.76 μmol g−1 h−1 under 300 W Xe lamp irradiation within a gas–solid reaction system. Furthermore, in-suit Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra were applied to unveil the details during photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This work presents a hetero-junction nanocomposite photocatalyst based on eco-friendly semiconductor and metal materials.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts are usually integrated onto light-absorbing semiconductors to form efficient photoelectrochemical water-splitting systems. Transition metal oxide nanoparticles serve as excellent electrocatalysts, but exhibit poor performance as cocatalysts for photoelectrodes. To address this issue, a FeCo@FeCoO x @NC dual-shell nanoparticle (consisting of a FeCo alloy core, an intermediate FeCoO x shell, and an outermost graphitic carbon shell) was prepared under micro-oxygen conditions. The FeCo alloy has the dual functions of rapid hole storage and efficient charge transport, while the FeCoO x layer acts as active sites to accelerate the kinetics of the water oxidation reaction and the graphitic carbon protects the internal structure of the nanoparticles. Under the synergistic effect of FeCo@FeCoO x @NC and NiFeO x cocatalysts, the injection efficiency and separation efficiency of BiVO 4 photoanode almost reach 100 %, and the photocurrent density reaches 6.85 mA cm −2 (1.23 V RHE , AM 1.5 G), marking the highest reported value to date.

Abstract:Design of highly efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction to renewable fuels has gained significant attention for energy sustainability and carbon neutralization. Here, we report the fabrication of hetero-metal oxide NiCo2V2O8 hollow nanospheres through self-templating strategy and anion-exchange reaction. The as-prepared NiCo2V2O8 hollow nanospheres exhibit remarkable CO2 photoreduction, achieving a CO generation rate of 198.65 μmol g−1 h−1 (9.64 times higher than the undoped Co3V2O8) with 98.8% selectivity under visible light irradiation. Results of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that addition of Ni in the hetero-metal oxide and their electronic interaction among d states decrease the bandgap to extend the light absorption, promote CO2 adsorption, and favor the separation of photogenerated charges with inhibited recombination. The in situ FT-IR and Raman spectral results identify the CO2 reduction pathway through COOH* intermediate. This work sheds light on production of solar fuels via an efficient hetero-metal oxide strategy.

Abstract:The development of high-performance catalysts for CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons is of great importance for addressing the energy crisis issue. In this work, the Cu@porphyrin-COFs nanorods materials were first designed and synthesized by solvothermal method followed by the electrodeposition of Cu nanowires to the free-base porphyrin-COFs on the carbon fibers. The structure of the free-base porphyrin-COFs were well characterized experimentally and simulatively calculated by DFT method. The Cu@porphyrin-COFs nanorods show high catalytic activity for CO2 reduction under photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) conditions, giving C1-C3 chemicals such as methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), ethane-1,1-diol (CH3CH(OH)(2)) and acetone (CH3COCH3) with an extremely apparent Faradaic efficiency (AFE) of total carbon-based products of 452.75% due to the efficient adsorption of protons onto the surfaces of Cu crystals and excellent absorption of solar light. The (CO2)-C-13 labeling experiments verified that the carbon-based products are derived from CO2. On the other hand, combining with simulation, we show that the hydroxyl groups in free-base porphyrins COFs play a vital role in photoelectrocatalytic reduction of CO2.
Oxygen-vacancy-assisted Construction of FeOOH/CdS Heterostructure As an Efficient Bifunctional Photocatalyst for CO2 Conversion and Water Oxidation

Abstract:An efficient bifunctional photocatalyst for CO2 reduction and water oxidation based on a heterostructure with FeOOH nanospindles (NSs) and CdS nanocrystals (NCs) is reported. The microstructure characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that surface oxygen vacancies (VO) at FeOOH NSs provide preferential deposition sites not only for CdS NCs to grow high-quality interface and form the heterostructure, but also for inert molecule adsorption. Owing to the synergistic effects of the VO-assisted interfacial charge transfer and surface reactions, the optimized FeOOH/CdS heterostructures display a single-carbon compound production rate of 18.43 mu mol g-1 h-1 (5.88 mu mol g- 1 h- 1 for CH4, 12.55 mu mol g- 1 h- 1 for CO), about 6.2 and 8.5 times higher than their separated counterparts, and an O2 evolution rate of 676.50 mu mol g-1 h-1 under visible-light irradiation. This work demonstrates for the first time the essential role of surface VO in the FeOOH/CdS heterostructures and their synergistic effects on photocatalysis performance.

Abstract:Spinel oxides have attracted much attention as an excellent light-absorbing material, but they exist fatal problems such as complicated synthesis method and poor carrier separation ability. Herein, a Z-scheme FeV2O4/g-C3N4 catalyst was designed and prepared via a one-pot hydrothermal ion-exchange method combined with post-treatment encapsulating process without any templates. The graphite phase carbon nitride encapsulated spinel to construct Z-scheme essence not only significantly lessens the recombination probability of photoexcited carriers, but also provides sufficient adsorptive and reactive sites for CO2 molecules. It also revealed that the resultant composite catalyst exhibited good photocatalytic activity and selectivity with positive inhibition of HER. In this regard, a profound insight is provided to construct high efficiency photocatalyst, which are expected to substitute precious metal catalysts and make progressive contributions for solving CO2 emissions.

Abstract:Enhanced carriers separation on photocatalysts is crucial for improving photocatalytic activity. In this paper, the Co-doped BiVO 4 /ZnWO 4 S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed to induce double internal electric fields (IEFs) for enhancing charges separation and transfer for efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . The photocatalytic CO 2 reduction efficiencies of the heterojunctions were significantly enhanced as compared with the counterparts. The optimized Co-doped BiVO 4 /ZnWO 4 exhibited the highest CO yield of 138.4 μ mol·g −1 ·h −1 , which were 86.5 and 1.4 folds of the BiVO 4 and Co-doped BiVO 4 . Results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron spin resonance (ESR), and work function demonstrated that charge transfer path of Co-doped BiVO 4 /ZnWO 4 conformed to S-scheme heterojunction mechanism. The kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the differential charge distributions confirmed the existence of double IEFs, which accelerated carrier separation and improved CO 2 adsorption and activation. In addition, in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ISFT-IR) revealed that HCOO − was the major intermediate during the CO 2 reaction. This study provides a feasible means to develop composite photocatalysts with dual IEFs for effective photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Mimic Metalloenzymes with Atomically Dispersed Fe Sites into Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for Enhanced CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:The massive CO2 emissions from continuous increases in fossil fuel consumption have caused disastrous environmental and ecological crises. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold the potential to convert CO2 and water into value-added chemicals and O2 to mitigate this crisis. However, their activity and selectivity are very low under conditions close to natural photosynthesis. In this work, inspired by the photosynthesis process in natural leaves, we successfully anchored atomically dispersed Fe sites into interlayers of the photoactive triazine-based COF (Fe-COF) membrane to serve as a mimic metalloenzyme for the first time. It is found that under the conditions of gas-solid and no addition of any photosensitizer and sacrificial reagent, the highly crystalline Fe-COF membrane shows a record high CO2 photoreduction performance with the CO production of 3972 μmol g-1 in a 4 h reaction, ~100% selectivity of CO, and excellent cycling stability (at least 10 cycles). In such a remarkable photocatalytic CO2 conversion, the atomically dispersed Fe sites with high catalytic activity significantly reduce the formation energy barrier of key *CO2 and *COOH intermediates, the high-density triazine moieties supply more electrons to the iron catalytic center to promote CO2 reduction, and the homogeneous COF membrane greatly improves the electron/mass transport. Thus, this work opens a new window for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts and provides new insights into their structure-activity relationship in CO2 photocatalytic reduction.

Abstract:A series of low-dose high-valence Ti 4+ doped MIL-53-NH 2 (Fe) photocatalysts were synthesized for visible-light-driven CO 2 reduction. The highest CO 2 -to-CO conversion rate of Ti 4+ doped MIL-53-NH 2 (Fe) was 7.24 mmol g −1 h −1 and the highest CO selectivity was 94% in acetonitrile solvent using [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ and triethanolamine.
