Abstract:PurposeAs the start of a new product development (NPD) process, the front fuzzy end (FFE) is believed to determine new product performance to a large extent. However, its effects on new product performance, particularly in terms of quality and cost, lack empirical evidence in the extant literature. Moreover, the joint performance effects of the FFE and cross-functional interfaces in later NPD stages (i.e. product development and product launch) are largely overlooked and deserve further investigation. Therefore, this study aims to explore the direct effects of the FFE and later stages’ joint moderating effects on new product performance (i.e. quality and cost) from a holistic process view.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual model is proposed to hypothesize the FFE–new product performance relationships and the joint performance effects of cross-functional interface management. A sample of 196 firms from an international survey is used and hierarchical linear regression is employed to test the proposed hypotheses.FindingsThis study finds that FFE implementation contributes to both new product quality and cost performance. Moreover, interface management in multiple NPD stages has synergistic performance effects. Specifically, the FFE, customer involvement in product development and manufacturing flexibility in product launch jointly improve new product quality performance, while the FFE, supplier involvement in product development and manufacturing flexibility in product launch jointly improve new product cost performance.Originality/valueThis study extends the NPD literature by deepening the understanding of the key roles of the FFE on new product performance and evidencing the synergistic effects of cross-functional interfaces in multiple NPD stages. Further, this study also highlights the differential joint moderating effects of interface management in later NPD stages on new product quality and cost performance. This study also offers insightful implications to NPD managers.

Abstract:This paper focus on the study of some Chinese large and medium sized companies in manufacturing industry, we report on the key factors for success with regard to the Fuzzy Front End (FFE) activities of New Product Development (NPD) through large sample. We bring forward an analytical framework and test a causal model of relationships among key variables relating to the front end factors and success. The causal model is tested with AMOS using information from 160 completed NPD projects from Chinese manufacturing firms. Three conclusions of this study are summarized as follows: First, the more both market uncertainty and technical uncertainties are reduced during the front end, the higher is the effectiveness of NPD projects. Second, the more intensively new projects are planned prior to the start of development, the more both market and technical uncertainties are reduced. Finally, in the industry goods firms, it is easy for managers to develop the Initial Planning, and it has a greater impact on Reduction of Market Uncertainty compared to the consumer goods firms.

The continuous development and market introduction of new products can be an important determinant of sustained enterprise performance. For approximately 30 years, conceptual and empirical research has been undertaken to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) of NPD project. Based on the correlative literature analysis, this paper sums up 19 Critical Success Factors (CSFs) of New Product Development (NPD) projects through the NPD process. Abstract:The structure dimensions and the interactions of new product development performance have stimulated debate lasting many years. To synthesize accumulating research findings, meta-analytic structural equation modeling was employed. Product advantage, time efficiency, cost efficiency and product success were used to measure the performance based on past literature. The correlation matrix of four performance variables was included in the meta-analysis based on 44 studies. The results of structural equations modeling show that the one-factor model is proposed as best-fitting alternative model of NPD performance, and the internal performance including product advantage, time and cost efficiency variables are positively associated with external performance.

Abstract:New product development (NPD) is necessary for enterprises' growth and the maintenance of competitive advantage. Although previous studies have explored the multiple antecedents of NPD performance, most of them consider the effect of antecedents in isolation, neglecting their interdependence. Drawing on complexity theory, the study presents a configuration model that combines six antecedents based on the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework. The results of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) show that digital technology application, product innovation, functional coordination, user participation, peer competition and environmental turbulence need to combine with each other in order to produce high NPD performance. The combination of product innovation, functional coordination and user participation plays an important role in NPD. The complementary effects of digital technology application, product innovation, functional coordination and user participation on NPD performance are demonstrated.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of exploratory innovation on the quality of new product development (NPD), and how do polychronicity of the top management team (TMT) and interfunctional coordination (IFC) moderate the above relationship. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses were tested by the survey data of 210 Chinese enterprises. Hierarchical regression analyzes were used to test the hypotheses in this research. Findings The results indicate that exploratory innovation facilitates NPD quality. TMT polychronicity weakens the effect of exploratory innovation on NPD quality. IFC strengthens the effect of exploratory innovation on NPD quality. Practical implications This study provides managers with insight on the relationship between exploratory innovation and NPD quality. To improve NPD quality, managers should be paying more attention to exploratory innovation. Furthermore, this study helps managers to understand how the relationship changes with the increases of TMT polychronicity and IFC. Originality/value This study highlights the value of exploratory innovation in increasing NPD quality based on the knowledge-based view. By incorporating TMT polychronicity and IFC based on the attention-based view, it offers much richer understandings of how exploratory innovation affects NPD quality.

Abstract:Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) helps to identify the weak points in the processing, manufacturing, and assembly of products and plays an important role in improving product reliability. To address the shortcomings of the existing FMEA methods in terms of the uncertainty treatment of information and not considering the weights and correlations between risk factors, we propose a new FMEA method. In this paper, the Fermatean fuzzy Z-number (FFZN) is proposed by fusing the Fermatean fuzzy number and Z-number. Extending it to the Bonferroni mean (BM) operator, the Fermatean fuzzy Z-number-weighted Bonferroni mean (FFZWBM) operator is proposed. A new FMEA method is proposed based on this operator. In order to overcome the factors not considered in the FMEA method, two new risk factors are proposed and added. The ability of experts to express fuzzy information is enhanced by introducing the FFS. The weights and correlations between the influencing factors can be handled by aggregating the evaluation information using the FFZWBM operator. Finally, the proposed method is applied to an arithmetic example and the accuracy of the proposed method is proved by teaming it with other methods.

How Competitive Intensity Affects the New Product Development Outcomes

Abstract:New product development (NPD) is essential for securing firms’ growth and success when faced with intense competition. However, the issues of the pathways through which competitive intensity affects NPD, and how firm size can play a moderating role in achieving specific NPD outcomes in competitive markets have not been adequately examined. To fill these gaps, the study proposes a research model based on the environment–behavior–performance theoretical framework, and empirically tests relationships among competitive intensity, knowledge integration, organizational unlearning, and NPD outcomes (i.e. NPD innovativeness, NPD speed), as well as the moderating role of firm size. Survey data from 242 Chinese manufacturing firms reveal that competitive intensity is positively associated with both knowledge integration and organizational unlearning. These relationships are moderated by firm size. Specifically, firm size strengthens the relationship between competitive intensity and knowledge integration, and weakens the relationship between competitive intensity and organizational unlearning. Further, by comparing the relative effects of knowledge integration and organizational unlearning on NPD outcomes, knowledge integration is found to have a stronger relationship with NPD speed than with NPD innovativeness. In contrast, organizational unlearning has a stronger relationship with NPD innovativeness than with NPD speed. This study provides a better understanding of how firms can choose appropriate strategic behaviors to achieve the expected NPD outcomes under intense competition.

Abstract:Due to ever increasing competitive market place, demanding customers, and rapidly advancing technologies, corporations developing new products are forced to look into all the possible areas of improvement throughout the entire product lifecycle management process. One of the research areas that have been overlooked in the past is Engineering Change Management (ECM). This paper presents a simulation model for investigating the mutual impacts of ECM process and New Product Development (NPD) process on each other. The discrete-event simulation model incorporates ECM into an NPD environment by allowing Engineering Change (EC) activities to compete for limited resources against regular NPD activities. The goal of the research is to determine the key characteristics of ECM and NPD that affect lead time and productivity of both processes. Decisions to be made by considering EC impacts are drawn from an enterprise level systems perspective.

Abstract:Purpose Integrating supplier innovation is considered an effective strategy to reduce uncertainty at the fuzzy front end (FFE). However, the large number of supplier innovation resources and the task environment forces buying firms to precisely identify more valuable or interesting innovation resources for integration. The impact of the interaction between supplier innovation and task environment on FFE performance needs to be further explored. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a contingency framework to examine the relationship between supplier innovation (technology-push and market-pull) and buying firm’s FFE performance in different task environments, with the aim of clarifying which supplier innovation resources should be integrated to create high FFE performance in the face of an uncertain task environment. Design/methodology/approach Survey data from new product development team leaders in Chinese high-tech firms were collected and analyzed. Furthermore, using multiple regression analysis, the relationship among supplier innovation, task environment and FFE performance was examined. Findings The results show that although both technology-push and market-pull supplier innovation can improve FFE performance, there are significant differences between the influences of these two types of supplier innovation in the face of different task environments. Practical implications Practical guidelines are provided for buyer managers on how to effectively identify the “best” supplier innovation resources to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of supplier involvement in the FFE. Originality/value This paper deepens the knowledge of identifying supplier innovation resources in the FFE and enriches the research on supplier-enable FFE innovation.

Abstract:Companies need to be innovative to survive in today's competitive market; thus, new product development (NPD) has become very important. This research constructs an integrated NPD framework for developing new products. In stage one, customer attributes (CAs) and engineering characteristics (ECs) for developing products are collected, and fuzzy interpretive structural modelling (FISM) is applied to understand the relationships among these critical factors. Based on quality function deployment (QFD), a house of quality is then built, and fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) is adopted to calculate the relative importance of ECs. In stage two, fuzzy failure mode and effects analysis (FFMEA) is applied to understand the potential failures of the ECs and to determine the importance of ECs with respect to risk control. In stage three, a goal programming (GP) model is constructed to consider the outcome from the FANP-QFD, FFMEA and other objectives, in order to select the most important ECs. Due to pollution and global warming, environmental protection has become an important topic. With both governments and consumers developing environmental consciousness, successful green and low-carbon NPD provides an important competitive advantage, enabling the survival or renewal of firms. The proposed framework is implemented in a panel manufacturing firm for designing a green and low-carbon product.

Abstract:New product development (NPD) determines firms' current market positions, and it also has far-reaching impacts on firms' future development. According to the resource-based view, technological capability and technology management capability are critical resources and capabilities for NPD. However, the research to date has not investigated the complementarity between these factors. This paper employs fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA) to explore how technological capability and technology management capability combine to produce high NPD performance. The analysis results show that in order to achieve high NPD performance, technological capability and technology management capability should be combined. Furthermore, the combinations of technological capability and technology management capability in different NPD stages are different. This paper deepens the theoretical understanding of the relationships between resources and capabilities in NPD by identifying the equifinality effect of the combinations of technological capability and technology management capability. In addition, this paper also provides theoretical guidance for firms to clarify the relationship between technological capability and technology management capability to improve NPD performance.

Abstract:In order to identify the effective decision-making factors at the individual NPD project manager level,a new effective decision-making model has been established by introducing the concept of decision-making effectiveness, analyzing the role of expertise, and identifying the major role of expertise and insight with respect to the interfaces between a new product, an organization, customers, technologies and regulations, for the study of the effective decision-making facilitators and inhibitors for a NPD project. The analysis of the unique task conditions for individual decision-makers shows that perceived complexity, uncertainty and time pressure have their negative effect on the effective decision-making process. It is concluded that the flexible, balanced and appropriate use of rational analysis, common sense and intuition is a key effective decision-making factor, and the task conditions.
Effort Exertion and Contract Design in Collaborative Product Development with Fairness Concern

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to model collaborative product development (CPD) among a focal firm (FF) and a fairness-concerned external partner (EP). The model is used to explore the impact of fairness concerns on revenue distributing contract and innovation efforts. The study also examines the role of follow-up sales in product development decisions. Design/methodology/approach A sequential game-theoretic model is developed to analyze product development decisions between the two parties, where participants exert innovation efforts to promote the product value and a revenue-sharing contract is used to distribute the revenue. Findings Fairness concern of EP has significant impacts on decisions. FF has incentives to change the contract in that fairness concerns might decrease his profit. Conditions and results change when the contract is endogenously decided. First, FF tends to develop the product independently. Second, FF may share a smaller revenue fraction with EP, as FF relies more on his own efforts during CPD. Third, FF cannot benefit from fairness concerns, as his profit is not higher than that in the benchmark. Finally, the existence of follow-up sales does not change FF’s decision about whether to collaborate with EP. Originality/value This study incorporates fairness preference into CPD decisions. Besides, a new concept of fairness called “effort-related fairness” is proposed.
