Abstract:When an electromagnetic field propagates through a linear but dispersive medium, the front edge (the launching fringe of the waveform where the field is first turned on) propagates precisely at the speed of light in vacuum by first timing on t1=tfront=（z/c）and the main signal (the main part of the field) follows up with group velocity which is characterized by the frequency-dependent refractive index of medium by second timing on t2=tgroup=(z/vgroup)=[n(φ)z/c] .The distinct wave-packets progress from tfrontto tgroup(i.e. from the front-edge-timing to the main-signal-starting timing) are well known as optical precursors. It was believed that precursors are an ultra-fast phenomena, persisting only for a few optical cycles, and that they have an exceedingly small amplitude and two different kinds of spike-type wave-packet (i.e. Sommerfeld precursor and Brillouin forerunner). Both exact wave shape for electromagnetic wave while it goes into a linear time-invariant, lossless plasma system is reported.

Abstract:We observed optical precursors in four-wave mixing based on a cold-atom gas. Optical precursors appear at the edges of pulses of the generated optical field, and propagate through the atomic medium without absorption. Theoretical analysis suggests that these precursors correspond to high-frequency components of the signal pulse, which means the atoms cannot respond quickly to rapid changes in the electromagnetic field. In contrast, the low-frequency signal components are absorbed by the atoms during transmission. We also showed experimentally that the backward precursor can be stored using a Raman transition of the atomic ensemble and retrieved later.

Abstract:We show that the optical transients recently read as "Sommerfeld-Brillouin precursors" by Jeong, Dawes and Gauthier are not identifiable with optical precursors (unless one considers that any coherent transient propagating in a dilute medium at the velocity c is an optical precursor) and that they can be interpreted in very simple physical terms.

Abstract:We experimentally observed optical precursors in optically pumped crystals using polarization-based interference. By switching the user-programmable medium among the fast light, slow light, and no-dispersion regimes, we observed an unchanged polarization state for the wave fronts. The robust polarization-encoded information carried by wave fronts suggests that precursors are the preferred carriers for both quantum and classical information in communication networks. Abstract:In a three-level atomic system coupled by two equal-amplitude laser fields with a frequency separation 2$\delta$, a weak probe field exhibits a multiple-peaked absorption spectrum with a constant peak separation $\delta$. The corresponding probe dispersion exhibits steep normal dispersion near the minimum absorption between the multiple absorption peaks, which leads to simultaneous slow group velocities for probe photons at multiple frequencies separated by $\delta$. We report an experimental study in such a bichromatically coupled three-level $\Lambda$ system in cold $^{87}$Rb atoms. The multiple-peaked probe absorption spectra under various experimental conditions have been observed and compared with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Quantum interface of coherent optical field and atomic excitations plays an important role in quantum metrology and quantum information science. The electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) technique has shown versatile and powerful capability in many applications during the last decades. By using efficient EIT-based memory, we directly observed single-photon-level Ramsey interference and also high-contrast spectral transparency comb with a visibility up to about 0.81 at around the resonant line in cold atoms. The interference fringes are mainly influenced by the pulse repetition period, the waveform overlap of the slowed and retrieved signal pulses, and the coherent lifetime of the EIT memory. All these factors have been investigated in detail. Such high-contrast interference fringe may offer us methods for precision measurement and potential applications in areas of atomic clock and magnetometry.

Abstract:The conclusions of a theoretical study of the dependence of the characteristics of the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency on the pulse intensity of the input probe radiation under elliptical polarization of laser fields have been reported. The analysis has been carried out for the Ʌ-scheme of inhomogeneously broadened quantum transitions between the levels , , and of the 208 Pb isotope. The cases of resonance, i.e., the coincidence of the frequencies of the probe and control fields with the central frequencies of the corresponding quantum transitions, and quasi-resonance, when such a coincidence occurs only up to the line width of the corresponding quantum transition, have been considered. It has been shown that in these cases there is a tendency for the input probe radiation to split into pulses with different polarization characteristics. If the input probe radiation is weak enough, these pulses have constant polarization characteristics and are normal mode pulses. In the case of a higher power of the input probe radiation, the pulses into which it splits in the medium are not normal mode pulses, but their polarization characteristics fluctuate near the values inherent in normal modes. At the same time, the phase modulation of the probe field is present at all stages of its propagation in the medium. It has been shown that the transparency of the medium for the probe field decreases with increasing intensity of the input probe radiation. However, it is sufficiently large if the polarization characteristics of the input probe radiation coincide with those for the normal mode, the major axis of the polarization ellipse of which is parallel to the major axis of the control field polarization ellipse.

Abstract:For optical systems, states inside the light cone could be detected by far-field measurement, while those below the light cone are not detectable by far-field measurement. A new method for far-field detection has been developed for observing states below the light cone with compound lattices. The basic mechanism involved is that periodic weak scattering leads to band folding, making the states out of the light cone to occur inside. By using polarization-resolved momentum-space imaging spectroscopy the band structures and iso-frequency contours of plasmonic lattices with different dimensions and symmetries are experimentally mapped out, in good agreement with the simulation.

Abstract:Time-resolved measurement of atomic emission enhancement is performed by using a 500-fs KrF laser pulse incident upon a high density supersonic O-2 gas jet, synchronized with an orthogonal ns frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser pulse. The ultra-short pulse serves as an igniter of the gas jet, and the subsequent ns-laser pulse significantly enhances the atomic emission. Analysis shows that the contributions to the enhancement effect are made mainly by the bremsstrahlung radiation and cascade ionization.

Abstract:We have observed CW lasing without inversion in a gas of hot rubidium atoms in an optical cavity under conditions of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). The medium is pumped coherently and resonantly by a single ``coupling'' beam which also produces EIT in the lasing transition. The steady-state intensity exhibits thresholds as a function of the atomic density and the strength of the coupling beam. A theoretical model for an effective three-level lambda system indicates that gain without inversion is possible in this system if the two ground states are coupled by depolarizing collisions, and if the decay branching ratios meet certain conditions.

Abstract:Strong light-matter interactions involved with photons and quasiparticles are fundamentally interesting to access the wealthy many-body physics in quantum mechanics. The emerging two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with large exciton binding energies and strong quantum confinement allow to investigate exciton-photon coupling at elevated temperatures. Here we report room-temperature formation of Bragg polaritons in monolayer semiconductor on a dielectric mirror through the exciton-Bragg photon coupling. With the negative detuning energy of ∼ 30 meV, angle-resolved reflection signals reveal anti-crossing behaviors of lower and upper polariton branches at ±18° together with the Rabi splitting of 10 meV. Meanwhile, the strengthened photoluminescence appears in the lower polariton branch right below the anti-crossing angles, indicating the presence of the characteristic bottleneck effect caused by the slowing exciton-polariton energy relaxation towards the band minimum. The extracted coupling strength is between the ones of weak and distinct strong coupling regimes, where the eigenenergy splitting induced by the moderate coupling is resolvable but not large enough to fully separate two polaritonic components. Our work develops a simplified strategy to generate exciton-polaritons in 2D semiconductors and can be further extended to probe the intriguing bosonic characteristics of these quasiparticles, such as Bose-Einstein condensation, polariton lasing and superfluidity, directly at the material surfaces.

Abstract:The excitation spectrum around the pump-only stationary state of a polariton optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in semiconductor microcavities is investigated by time-resolved photoluminescence. The response to a weak pulsed perturbation in the vicinity of the idler mode is directly related to the lifetime of the elementary excitations. A dramatic increase of the lifetime is observed for a pump intensity approaching and exceeding the OPO threshold. The observations can be explained in terms of a critical slowing down of the dynamics upon approaching the threshold and the following onset of the soft Goldstone mode.

Abstract:We observe an optical filtering effect in four-wave mixing (FWM) process based on a cold atomic gas. The side peaks appear at the edges of pulse of generated optical field, and they propagate through the atomic media without absorption. The theoretical analysis shows that these side peaks corresponded to the high frequency part of pulse of generated signal, which means the atoms cannot response to the rapid change of the electromagnetic field in time. On the contrary, the low frequency components of generated signal are absorbed during the transmission through the atoms. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate that the backward side peak could be stored by using Raman transition in atomic ensemble and retrieved later.
Strong electromagnetically induced transparency in atomic media with large residual Doppler broadening

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency and coherent population trapping were observed in a hot (1000 K) calcium vapor embedded into an electrical gas discharge. Unexpectedly large transparencies (of up to 70%) were observed under very unfavorable conditions: probe wavelength shorter than the coupling wavelength, and coupling Rabi frequency significantly smaller than the residual Doppler linewidth of the two photon transition. We developed a theoretical model that shows that the observed results are due to the combined effects of a strong probe beam and a small open character of the atomic system. Coherent population trapping also manifests itself as a change in the impedance of the gas discharge, and the phenomenon can be probed with high sensitivity via the optogalvanic effect.

Abstract:In this letter, we apply an optical setup to simulate the coherent evolution of an atomic wavepacket under the action of a standing-wave optical pulse sequence. Predicted population oscillations in [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 39 , 3012 (2022)] have been observed, and the beam divergence angle, which corresponds to the atomic momentum width, has been obtained by fitting the data. Consequently, we confirm the viability of employing standing-wave optical pulse sequences for measuring the ultra-narrow momentum distribution of atoms. In addition, we introduce a fitting method suitable for data obtained under non-ideal experimental conditions, which serves as a reference for similar experiments in atomic ultra-low temperature measurements.

Abstract:We studied the atomic momentum distribution of a superposition of Bloch states in the lowest band of an optical lattice after the action of the standing- wave pulse. By designing the imposing pulse on this superposed state, an atomic momentum pattern appears with a narrow interval between the adjacent peaks that can be far less than double recoil momentum. The patterns with narrower interval come from the effect of the designed pulse on the superposition of many Bloch states with quasimomenta throughout the first Brillouin zone. Our experimental result of narrow interval peaks is consistent with the theoretical simulation. The patterns of multiple modes with different quasimomenta may be helpful for precise measurement and atomic manipulation.
