Abstract:Most sensor networks employ distributed and dynamic routing protocols. The flexibility that each node can choose the best forwarder from a diverse candidate set could offer excellent routing performance when the network is highly dynamic. However, it sacrifices routing predictability since it is possible that routing loops are frequently formed. Can we increase the network predictability by controlling the network? As a step towards solving this problem, we introduce FlexCut, a flexible approach for cutting off wireless links, which essentially limits the candidate forwarder set of each node. Unlike existing SDN solutions, FlexCut introduces flexible control over existing distributed and dynamic routing protocols. FlexCut can trade arbitrary amounts of routing diversity for better network performance by exposing to network operators a parameter which quantifies the aggressiveness. We propose novel algorithms, both centralized and distributed, to cut off user-defined number of links so that loops can be alleviated while routing flexibility can be preserved to the largest extent. We evaluate FlexCut extensively by both testbed experiments and simulations. Results show that FlexCut improves the performance by 40% ~ 90% compared with a baseline algorithm in terms of our optimization goal. Results also show that FlexCut can improve the network performance of a sensor network by 20% ~ 35%, 30% ~ 50%, 25% respectively, in terms of packet delivery ratio, transmission delay and radio duty cycle.

Abstract:Lightpath utilization inefficiencies exist when grooming label switched path(LSP) requests in IP over wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM) networks with an overlay model.A possible-neighbor-based strategy was developed to estimate the physical hops of lightpaths using the single-hop grooming probabilities of router pairs,to preferably select possible shorter lightpaths to carry connections.Simulations show that the strategy can effectively estimate the physical lightpath hops and reduce the average optical resource consumption of LSP connections to significantly improve the connection request blocking probability and network resource utilization.

Abstract:As the energy consumption of network has become an increasingly important issue, traffic grooming on Internet protocol over wavelength division multiplexing (IP-WDM) networks has been widely used for energy-efficient optical network. Traffic grooming can reduce the number of installed light paths and corresponding IP router line cards at the cost of traffic processing overhead. However, traditional traffic grooming algorithm prefers longer paths, which are responsible for longer transmission hop distance. Although there are studies that focus on reducing hop distance, the energy consumption increases accordingly. In this way, the trade-off between energy consumption and hop distance is a problem worth discussing. This paper proposes a modified heuristic traffic grooming algorithm which can improve the trade-off efficiency by about 20%, compared with the earlier algorithms.

Abstract:This letter introduces a dynamic traffic grooming approach in bandwidth-flexible multi-layer IP/optical networks. A novel IP/optical multi-layer routing and grooming algorithm is proposed to calculate the routes for bitrate-flexible IP traffic over spectrum-flexible optical networks. The algorithm employs a bandwidth threshold, an auxiliary graph, and two grooming policies. Numerical results show that the dynamic grooming approach achieves lower blocking probabilities compared with IP-over-WDM and non-grooming flexible networks.

Abstract:In a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network, sub-wavelength traffic streams can be elaborately arranged in wavelength channels to minimize the number of required electronic end systems, known as the traffic grooming problem. In this paper, a modified genetic algorithm without crossover operation is proposed to solve the problem using a permutation-based chromosome representation and using a selection strategy of reproducing the best chromosomes, thereby minimizing the number of electronic devices and requiring less wavelengths. Then, three methods are developed to improve the performance of the algorithm and a hill-climbing algorithm is proposed for the same purpose. Computer simulations were performed with plenty of randomly generated traffic patterns in unidirectional rings. The results show that these methods can improve the algorithm considerably. The relationships between the minimized network cost and the number of nodes are also presented.
Practical Traffic Grooming Scheme for Single-Hub SONET/WDM Rings.

Abstract:In SONET/WDM networks, one fiber supports multiple wavelengths and each wavelength supports several low rate tributary streams. 'Traffic grooming' then is defined as properly using SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer to electronically multiplex and demultiplex required tributary traffic patterns with minimal resource cost (wavelengths and ADMs).This paper studies traffic grooming problem in single hub SONET/WDM networks and extends existing results. We analyze the real deployments, generalize their results, and study the practical special cases. We prove that BLSR/2 would never be more expensive than UPSR under any traffic pattern. We also present the exact minimum costs of uniform traffic in both UPSR and BLSR/2. We give approximation algorithms for optimal grooming of non-uniform traffic. Finally, we consider how to select the line speeds if there are two different line speeds available.

Abstract:Traditional wired data center networks (DCNs) suffer from cabling complexity, lack flexibility, and are limited by the speed of digital switches. In this paper, we alternatively develop a top-down traffic grooming (TG) approach to the design and provisioning of mission-critical optical wireless DCNs. While switches are modeled as hybrid optoelectronic cross-connects, links are modeled as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) capable free-space optic (FSO) channels. Using the standard TG terminology, we formulate the optimal mixed-integer TG problem considering the virtual topology, flow conversation, connection topology, non-bifurcation, and capacity constraints. Thereafter, we develop a fast yet efficient sub-optimal solution which grooms mice flows (MFs) and mission-critical flows (CFs) and forward on predetermined rack-to-rack (R2R) lightpaths. On the other hand, elephant flows (EFs) are forwarded over dedicated server-to-server (S2S) express lightpaths whose routes and capacity are dynamically determined based on the availability of wavelength and capacity. To prioritize the CFs, we consider low and high priority queues and analyze the delay characteristics such as waiting times, maximum hop counts, and blocking probability. As a result of grooming the sub-wavelength traffic and adjusting the wavelength capacities, numerical results show that the proposed solutions can achieve significant performance enhancement by utilizing the bandwidth more efficiently, completing the flows faster than delay sensitivity requirements, and avoiding the traffic congestion by treating EFs and MFs separately.

Abstract:In this paper, an intelligent static traffic grooming scheme based on predatory search algorithm (PSA) and gaming is proposed in IP over WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical Internet. Based on the layered graph, the proposed scheme tries to maximize the comprehensive user traffic request delay satisfaction degree and minimize the network relative cost, and then the optimal traffic grooming scheme is found through the transition between the local and the global search realized by adjusting the restriction level of search area. It is simulated over actual network topologies. Simulation results show that it is both feasible and effective with better performance than certain existing traffic grooming scheme.

Abstract:The benefit of a two-layer hybrid IP/MPLS （multi-protocol label switching） over a wavelength division multiplexing network has been analyzed considering both the cost and different grooming policies. A detailed cost and performance analysis of hybrid networks is done for three different grooming policies. The hybrid network cost is compared with that of an opaque network for equal traffic demand and equal blocking probability of dynamic requests of label switched paths. An algorithm is given to design optimum hybrid nodes for different grooming policies to provide the desired blocking probability for a given number of dynamic connection requests. The results show that all three applied grooming policies （IP layer first, optical layer first, and one hop first） result in lower costs of the hybrid network architecture than for the opaque network. In addition, an adaptive one hop first method is given to improve the best of the applied grooming policies, which limits grooming in heavily loaded hybrid nodes to achieve load balancing. The simulation results show that the new policy significantly reduces the overall blocking probability.

Abstract:In this paper we study energy conservation in the Internet. We observe that different traffic volumes on a link can result in different energy consumption; this is mainly due to such technologies as trunking (IEEE 802.1AX), adaptive link rates, etc. We design a green Internet routing scheme, where the routing can lead traffic in a way that is green. We differ from previous studies where they switch network components, such as line cards and routers, into sleep mode. We do not prune the Internet topology.We first develop a power model, and validate it using real commercial routers. Instead of developing a centralized optimization algorithm, which requires additional protocols such as MPLS to materialize in the Internet, we choose a hop-by-hop approach. It is thus much easier to integrate our scheme into the current Internet. We progressively develop three algorithms, which are loop-free, maximize energy conservation, and jointly consider green and QoS requirements such as path stretch. We comprehensively evaluate our algorithms through simulations on synthetic and real topologies and traffic traces. We show that the power saving in the line cards can be as much as 50%.

Abstract:Traffic grooming is widely employed to reduce the number of ADM's and wavelengths. We consider the problem of grooming of dynamic traffic in WDM tree and star networks in this paper. To achieve better results, we used the bifurcation techniques to the grooming of arbitrary dynamic traffic in a strictly non-blocking manner in networks. Three splitting methods, including Traffic-Cutting, Traffic-Dividing and Synthesized-Splitting were proposed. A genetic algorithm (GA) approach based on these methods was proposed to tackle such grooming problems in tree and star networks. The performance of these algorithms was tested under different conditions in star and tree networks. Computer simulation results showed that our algorithm is efficient in reducing both the numbers of ADM's and wavelengths.

Abstract:The growing popularity of high-speed mobile communications, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has reinforced the tidal traffic phenomenon, which induces spatio-temporal disequilibrium in the network traffic load. The main reason for tidal traffic is the large-scale population migration between business areas during the day and residential areas during the night. Traffic grooming provides an effective solution to aggregate multiple fine-grained IP traffic flows into the optical transport layer by flexibly provisioning lightpaths over the physical topology. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive study on energy efficiency and network performance enhancement in the presence of tidal traffic. We propose and leverage the concept of stateful grooming to apply differentiated provisioning policies based on the state of network nodes. We formulate and solve the node-state-decision optimization problem, which can decide the specific state of network nodes when a certain traffic profile is given, considering the trade-off between energy efficiency and blocking performance with a multi-objective integer linear program (MOILP). Then, we propose an online traffic-aware intelligent differentiated allocation of lightpaths (TIDAL) algorithm, based on stateful grooming and the MOILP, to accommodate the dynamic tidal traffic. Our illustrative numerical results show that the proposed method can achieve a significant performance improvement in an energy-efficient way.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:With the increase in global wireless traffic, the use of large-scale satellite networking to provide ubiquitous access is one of the essential trends of future 6G network development. Elastic optical satellite networks (EOSNs) are widely considered a flexible solution for future satellite communication. However, with the continuous proliferation of network devices and users, the growing disparity between user demands and the limited bandwidth and capacity of the network is becoming increasingly noticeable. This has led to issues such as constrained network resource utilization and resource fragmentation. Therefore, EOSNs must efficiently address the challenge of allocating scarce bandwidth resources. Effective traffic grooming methods will be applied to EOSNs to solve the problem of bandwidth shortage. This paper proposed a dynamic traffic grooming algorithm based on virtualization-plane-aided optimization (DTG-VPO) to facilitate the bandwidth allocation for EOSNs. Firstly, the nodes of the alternative paths were graded, and the weights of the subsequent hop links were modified. Then, the path was evaluated using link weights, alternative paths were selected in the virtual and physical topologies, respectively, and a path set was constructed. Finally, a resource block evaluation parameter was designed to quantify the quality of candidate resource blocks and rank them. A series of simulations have evaluated the traffic-blocking probability and wavelength utilization under different traffic loads. The link resource was more fully utilized compared with other traffic grooming algorithms. The blocking probability can be reduced by 75%, while wavelength utilization can be improved by 8.1%.

Toward Power-Efficient Backbone Routers

Abstract:Recently, a new design framework, called GreenRouter, has been proposed to reduce the power consumption of backbone routers. In a GreenRouter, a line card is partitioned into two functional parts, namely, an InTerFace (ITF) part that is relatively much lighter and a Processing Engine (PE) part that is relatively much heavier, in power consumption. This partitioning allows ITFs to share the collective processing capability of PEs, which in turn allows a significant percentage of PEs to be put into sleep mode (to save energy) during periods of light link utilizations. In this paper, we study how ITFs can distribute traffic flows to the PEs so that the offered loads on all active PEs are near-perfectly balanced over time, and kept close to a target load (say 90%), so that the number of active PEs can be minimized. Since Green- Router's original solution to this problem is quite crude,we propose a principled solution that has much lower system overheads and achieves better load-balance. Throughboth simulation studies and rigorous analyses, we show our solution can, with high probability, rapidly restore the nearperfect load balance among active PEs, after each PE overload event.

Abstract:In this paper, a genetic algorithm is proposed for grooming of arbitrary traffic in optical mesh networks. Traffic streams are routed in the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) grooming networks that comprise both fiber links and established lightpaths. Chromosomes are split into multiple versions when multiple shortest routes are found. The selection strategy is based on a comparison between chromosomes. A variety of cost functions are proposed for the routing algorithm and two comparison methods are considered in the selection procedure. Computer simulations are performed with randomly generated traffic patterns. The results show that the algorithm is effective for traffic grooming (TG) problems, and also for routing and wavelength assignment problems.
Reducing Power of Traffic Manager in Routers Via Dynamic On/off-Chip Scheduling

Abstract:Green networking in the Internet becomes increasingly important. In a high-performance router, the dominant power consumer on the Internet, half of its total power usage goes into the line-cards, where the traffic managers inside consume most of it. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient design on the traffic manager architecture for packet buffering and storage. Unlike traditional routers where packets are always kept in off-chip memory, we propose a dynamic on-chip and off-chip scheduling mechanism, called Dynamic Packet Manager (DPM), to reduce both peak and average power consumption caused by the traffic manager. DPM buffers packets in a small on-chip memory in the light-traffic period, and activates the off-chip memory on when the on-chip memory is to overflow. In this design, when the traffic is light, the off-chip memory is put into power saving state by clock gating so that the average power consumption is reduced. With an on-chip flow based and off-chip class-based design, DPM can save one off-chip memory otherwise used for the per-flow index information storage, therefore further reduce the peak power usage. We present the theoretic analysis guiding the implementation of the DPM mechanism. Experiments on three prototypes implemented on different hardware show that the peak and average power consumptions can be reduced by 27.9% and 37.5% respectively, along with less on-chip memory cost. Besides, the traffic manger with DPM shows better performance on average packet scheduling delay than the one without DPM.
