Abstract:We propose a simple 60-GHz RoF system using one single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). By choosing proper carrier frequencies of two MZM driving signals, fiber transmission distance can be extended up to 12 km. Compared with conventional intensity modulation with direct detection using 60-GHz MZM or electro-absorption modulator (EAM), the proposed RoF system can support longer fiber transmission distance (up to 12 km) and has less bandwidth requirement of optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitter (34 GHz vs. 64 GHz). However, the generated 60-GHz OFDM signal will have beat noise after square-law photo-detection. In this paper, the beat noise is analytically analyzed. Hence, the beat noise mitigation algorithm with the beat noise re-construction technique is proposed and utilized to reduce beat-noise-induced interference and improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). 60-GHz 13.75-Gbps quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 20.625-Gbps 8-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) OFDM signals with 3-m wireless transmission are experimentally demonstrated and transmitted over 12-km and 6-km single-mode fiber, respectively.

Abstract:Recently, remarkable efforts have been made in developing wireless communication systems at ultrahigh data rates, with radio frequency (RF) carriers in the millimeter wave (30-300 GHz) and/or in the terahertz (THz, >300 GHz) bands. Converged technologies combining both the electronics and the photonics show great potential to provide feasible solutions with superior performance compared to conventional RF technologies. However, technical challenges remain to be overcome in order to support high data rates with considerably feasible wireless distances for practical applications, particularly in the THz region. In this work, we present an experimental demonstration of a single-channel THz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system operating at 350 GHz, achieving beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate over a 10-km fiber plus a >20-m wireless link, without using any THz amplifiers. This achievement is enabled by using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal with a probabilistic-shaped 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation format, a pair of highly directive Cassegrain antennas, and advanced digital signal processing techniques. This work pushes the THz RoF technology one step closer to ultrahigh-speed indoor wireless applications and serves as an essential segment of the converged fiber-wireless access networks in the beyond 5G era.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the feasibility of a simple multigigabit-per-second (Gbps) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing multilevel orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signal modulation at 60 GHz and a single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). In this paper, the impact of fiber chromatic dispersion and OFDM beat noise on the performance of the RoF system are investigated by theoretical analysis, VPI WDM-TransmissionMaker simulation and experimental demonstration. A 13.875-Gb/s QPSK OFDM signal occupying the full 7-GHz license-free band at 60 GHz with frequency multiplication for the RoF link is demonstrated. After 3 km of standard single-mode fiber transmission with no dispersion compensation, the power penalty is less than 3 dB.

Abstract:The increasing demand for wireless video-based interactive and multimedia data services explains why 60-GHz millimeter-wave wireless system is a promising candidate to provide multi-gigabit-per-second wireless services. While attempting to generate and transmit 60 GHz signals in a wireless system cost effectively and increase the spectral efficiency to facilitate multi-gigabit-per-second services, this work reviews three radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems based on optical frequency multiplication (up to 6 times) to reduce the bandwidth requirement of optical transmitters. Additionally, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals with multi-level modulation formats (16 QAM) are utilized to achieve an ultrahigh data rate of 28 Gbps within the 7-GHz license-free band and compensate for an uneven frequency response of 60-GHz RoF systems. Negligible power penalty following 25-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission is observed, capable of significantly extending the service range to various applications within a building or campus.

Abstract:A 60GHzmm-wave wireless transceiver for radio over fiber (RoF) is proposed, using sub-harmonic mixer and IF digital signal processing. This scheme can overcome LO leakage and I/Q mismatch. Moreover, an effective verification method of co-simulation between VPI and ADS platforms is considered, this gives full play to the respective advantages of them and in this way we can obtain the results. From these results of the designed wireless transceiver measured by frequency and time domain, we find that 1Gbit/s data signals carried by 60GHzmm-wave signals can be successfully recovered. Additionally, the isolation and the conversion loss of the mixer are more than 20dB, less than 17dB, respectively. Moreover, the output power of the 60GHz transceiver is nearly linear with different input powers that are more than −30dBm.

Abstract:A millimeter wave radio-over-fiber(ROF) downlink transmission system was developed to increase the ROF system bandwidth,reduce the system cost,and expand the transmission length.This system generates high frequency millimeter waves based on optical carrier suppression(OCS) modulation using a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM).The system is easier to implement than traditional methods.At the central station,the OCS scheme is used to generate and up-convert a 33 GHz optical millimeter wave.At the base station,the downstream signal is received by a high speed photodiode with the base data recovered by an electrical mixer.Experimental results show that the downlink 2.5 Gb/s data transfer over a 20 km single mode fiber was successful.Both the bandwidth and the transmission length are greatly improved over the traditional method.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective radio-over-fiber (RoF) system to simultaneously generate and transmit multiband and multi-gigabit 60-GHz millimeter wave (MMW) signals using frequency quintupling technique. Multiband signals at 56-GHz and 60-GHz are realized with two cascaded single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs), where phase control is not required. Furthermore, only low-frequency (<= 12GHz) optical and electrical devices are used in the central station (CS), which enable a cost-effective system. At the user-terminal, two-stage down-conversions are employed by envelope detection (ED) and intermediate frequency (IF) mixing, eliminating expensive highspeed synthesizer and critical phase control components. Abstract:The radio-over-fiber (RoF) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system at Terahertz (THz) band has been a promising solution to meet the demand for high capacity and flexibility. The signals transmitted in the RoF system will suffer severe impairments caused by the wireless multi-path effect, optical fiber transmission, and photoelectric device response. The time-frequency domain equalization (TFDE) based on the two-dimension convolution (Conv2D) neural network (NN) is proposed to resist the linear and nonlinear impairments of the RoF-OFDM system. Furthermore, complex convolution is applied to compensate for the complex channel response. Compared with several baseline models, the detailed performance improvement and model size discussion of the complex-valued Conv2D NN TFDE are investigated. With the aid of the complex-valued Conv2D NN TFDE, the 16 Gbaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signals are delivered over 54.6 m wireless distance and 20 km standard single mode fiber. The line rate of this RoF system achieves 53.5 Gbit/s.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated the transmission performance of orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals in a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber system over up to 100-km standard single-mode fiber employing an adaptive bit-loading algorithm. Considering dispersion-induced phase noise, the maximum capacities after different fiber distances are investigated with and without a phase noise suppression (PNS) algorithm for the first time. When a distributed-feedback (DFB) laser with the linewidth of 1.3 similar to 4.1 MHz is modulated to carry the radio signals, the PN will result in more than 21.5% capacity decrease after 100-km fiber and 3-m wireless link, and the PNS algorithm which needs no bandwidth-consuming pilot tones can accomplish more than 15.3% capacity increase.

Abstract:This work experimentally demonstrates the efficacy of the 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique for capacity improvement of a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing single-carrier modulation format. We employ frequency domain equalization (FDE) to estimate the channel response, including frequency response of the 60 GHz RoF system and the MIMO wireless channel. Using FDE and MIMO techniques, we experimentally demonstrate the doubling the of wireless data capacity of a 60 GHz RoF system to 27.15 Gb/s using 16-QAM modulation format, with transmission over 25 km of standard single-mode fiber and 3 m wireless distance.
