Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic up-converted 25 Gbit/s fiber-wireless quadrature phase shift-keying (QPSK) data transmission link at the W-band (75-110 GHz). By launching two free-running lasers spaced at 87.5 GHz into a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at the central office, a W-band radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal is generated and distributed to the remote antenna unit (RAU). One laser carries 12.5 Gbaud optical baseband QPSK data, and the other acts as a carrier frequency generating laser. The two signals are heterodyne mixed at a photodetector in the RAU, and the baseband QPSK signal is transparently up-converted to the W-band. After the wireless transmission, the received signal is first down-converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) at 13.5 GHz at an electrical balanced mixer before being sampled and converted to the digital domain. A digital-signal-processing (DSP)-based receiver is employed for offline digital down-conversion and signal demodulation. We successfully demonstrate a 25 Gbit/s QPSK wireless data transmission link over a 22.8 km SSMF plus up to 2.13 m air distance with a bit-error-rate performance below the 2 × 10-3 forward error correction (FEC) limit. The proposed system may have the potential for the integration of the in-building wireless networks with the fiber access networks, e.g., fiber-to-the-building (FTTB).

Abstract:We overview our several field trial demonstrations of large-capacity long-distance wireless millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal delivery at W-band based on some enabling technologies and advanced devices. First, we demonstrated up to 1.7-km wireless delivery of 20-Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) signal at W-band, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the longest wireless transmission distance for W-band signal delivery up to now. Then, we demonstrated 300-m wireless delivery of 80-Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal at W-band. 80Gb/s, or 74.7Gb/s after removing 7% forward-error-correction (FEC) overhead, is a record for W-band wireless signal delivery over a few hundred meters to the best of our knowledge. We also demonstrated 100-m wireless delivery of 100-Gb/s QPSK signal at W-band, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest baud rate at W-band with ~100m wireless distance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 400 GHz carrier wireless transmission system with real-time capable detection and demonstrate transmission of a 60 Gbit/s signal derived from optical Nyquist channels in a 12.5 GHz ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UD-WDM) grid and carrying QPSK modulation. This is the highest data rate demonstrated for carrier frequencies above 300 GHz and also validates the feasibility of bridging between next generation 100 GbE wired data streams and indoor wireless applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an 100 Gbit/s hybrid optical fiber-wireless link by employing photonic heterodyning up-conversion of optical 12.5 Gbaud polarization multiplexed 16-QAM baseband signal with two free running lasers. Bit-error-rate performance below the FEC limit is successfully achieved for air transmission distances up to 120 cm.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a W-band optical-wireless transmission system over 160-m wireless distance with a bit rate up to 40 Gb/s. The optical-wireless transmission system adopts optical polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) reception and antenna polarization diversity. Using this system, we experimentally demonstrate the 2×2 MIMO wireless delivery of 20- and 40-Gb/s PDM quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) signals over 640- and 160-m wireless links, respectively. The bit-error ratios (BERs) of these transmission systems are both less than the forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10-3.

Abstract:We experimentally built a photonics-aided long-distance large-capacity millimeter-wave wireless transmission system and demonstrated a delivery of 40 Gbit/s W-band 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal over 4600 m wireless distance at 88.5 GHz. Advanced offline digital signal processing algorithms are proposed and employed for signal recovery, which makes the bit-error ratio under 2.4×10-2. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first field-trial demonstration of >4 km W-band 16QAM signal transmission, and the result achieves a record-breaking product of wireless transmission capacity and distance, i.e., 184 (Gbit/s)·km, for high-speed and long-distance W-band wireless communication.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a large-capacity long-distance high-spectral-efficiency fiber-wireless-integration transmission system, which can realize photonics-aided multiband delivery of 54-Gb/s W-band polarization division multiplexing 8-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation downlink signal and 32-Gb/s K-band PDM-16QAM uplink signal over 20-km single-mode fiber-28 and 2500-m wireless 2 2 multiple-input multiple-output link, with a bit-error ratio under $\text{3.8}\times \text{10}^{{-3}}$. Transmitter-based predistortion and receiver-based decision-directed least-mean-square equalization are employed to improve the system performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of >2-km K-band wireless signal delivery with 16QAM, and the first demonstration of >2-km W-band wireless signal delivery with 8QAM.

Abstract:We proposed and established a large-capacity, long-distance wireless millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal delivery system at W-band based on photonics-aided mm-wave generation technology, polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM), and advanced devices. We demonstrated the wireless transmission of 10-Gbaud PDM-QPSK, PDM-16QAM, and PDM-PS-64QAM mm-wave signals in the W-band up to 4.6-km, respectively. The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Volterra equalizer (VE) is employed during the Rx offline digital signal processing (DSP) to compensate for impairments and further improve the system transmission performance. Our demonstrated system can generate and deliver 10-Gbaud (110 Gb/s) PDM-PS-64QAM (5.5 bits/symbol/polarization) mm-wave signal at 88.5-GHz over 4.6-km wireless distance with a bit-error-rate (BER) below the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2.4 x 10(-2). Considering the SD-FEC threshold of 2.4x10(-2) with 20% overhead, the maximum net rate of 91.6 Gb/s in this system can be achieved. To the best of the authors' knowledge, it's the first time to demonstrate single-carrier PDM-PS-64QAM (91.6 Gb/s) wireless mm-wave signal delivery over 4.6 km at W-band.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, photonics-aided J-band 7.48-Gb/s QPSK signals and 2.5-Gb/s 512-QAM signals using delta-sigma modulation over 1.2-km wireless link. After 1.2-km wireless transmission, the bit error rate (BER) of the 512-QAM is below the 20% soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 × 10 −2 . As far as we know, this is the longest distance achieved for wireless transmission in a photonics-aided J-band wireless transmission system.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a D-band photonics-aided long-distance and largecapacity wireless transmission system. Based on photonics-aided millimeter wave communication technology, advanced equipment, and an advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm, we have successfully realized the wireless transmission of a 15G baud PS-16QAM signal in the D-band of 4.6 km. At the transmitting end, the probability shaping (PS) technique and the truncated probability shaping (TPS) technique are introduced to alleviate the nonlinear impairment introduced by the photoelectric/electro-optic (OE/EO) conversion. Meanwhile, a high-gain power amplifier (PA) and a pair of self-designed polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) lenses are used to achieve long-distance transmission. At the receiving end, the Volterra nonlinear equalization (VNE) algorithm based on the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) structure is deployed to compensate the residual I/Q imbalance impairment and nonlinear impairment. By utilizing this advanced equipment and DSP algorithms, a 4.6 km wireless transmission with a net bit rate of 41.7 Gb/s has been successfully realized over D-band, and its bit error rate (BER) is below the 25 % soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 4.2 x 10-2. The product of the net bit rate and wireless transmission distance has reached a record 41.7 Gb/s x 4.6 km = 191.8 Gb/s & sdot;km. As far as we know, this is the first experimental demonstration of a net rate exceeding 40 Gb/s in a D-band long-distance transmission system.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a seamlessly integrated fiber-wireless system that delivers a 108 Gb/s signal through 80 km fiber and 1 m wireless transport over free space at 100 GHz adopting polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulation and heterodyning coherent detection. The X- and Y-polarization components of the optical PDM-QPSK baseband signal are simultaneously upconverted to 100 GHz wireless carrier by optical polarization-diversity heterodyne beating, and then independently transmitted and received by two pairs of transmitter and receiver antennas, which form a 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output wireless link. At the wireless receiver, two-stage downconversion is performed firstly in the analog domain based on balanced mixer and sinusoidal radio frequency signal, and then in the digital domain based on digital signal processing (DSP). Polarization demultiplexing is realized by the constant modulus algorithm in the DSP part at the receiver. The bit-error ratio for the 108 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal is less than the pre-forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) after both 1 m wireless delivery at 100 GHz and 80 km single-mode fiber-28 transmission. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration to realize 100 Gb/s signal delivery through both fiber and wireless links at 100 GHz. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The free-space optical communication of high-speed 120 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) QPSK signals is demonstrated in an outdoor atmospheric channel with a distance of about 1 km. A pair of optical terminal systems with the capture and tracking functions is used to establish the atmospheric channel. The power fluctuation through the atmospheric turbulence agrees well with the exponentiated Weibull distribution. At the BER of 3.8 x 10(-3), the required receiving powers for the three WDM channels are similar, which are all <-15.4 dBm.

Abstract:Photonics technology is a promising way to generate high-frequency millimeter waves, which is also a key technology to realize the convergence of fiber-optic and wireless communication. To meet the actual application requirements, kilometer-level wireless distance, large-capacity, and high-spectral-efficiency systems are urgent requirements. Based on the photonics-aided system at the W band, we achieve a net rate of 47.45-Gb/s signal delivery over a 10-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) and 4.6-km wireless free-space link. The spectral efficiency of the system is 4.97 bit/s/Hz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration at more than a 4-km wireless distance level at the W band based on a photonics-aided system, and we achieve a record product of the single-channel transmission rate and wireless distance, i.e., 47.45 Gb/s × 4.6 km = 218.27 Gb/s km. The experimental results provide a good reference value for improving the transmission distance and data rate of the radio-over-fiber (ROF) system, and will play an important role in the future beyond the 5G era.
