In this paper, theoretical model of the noise sources is analyzed for practical SBS-based optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs) including amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, Rayleigh backscattering (RB) noise and out-of-band (OB) noise. And a detailed investigation is carried out with simulation and experiment to reveal the characteristics of the noise sources.

Abstract:A novel scheme to implement the super-mode noise suppression for coupled optoelectronic oscillator (COED) utilizing an optoelectronic hybrid filter (OEF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The OEF is made up of a multi-mode optoelectronic oscillator, incorporated in the COED loop to serve as a channelized RF filter, while the fiber laser in the COED can be viewed as another channelized RF filter of high Q. The cascading of the two equivalent channelized RF filters can greatly improve the out-of-band rejection ratio of the combined filter and restrain the adjacent mismatched modes in the oscillating loop. In the experiment, a 9.955 GHz RF signal with the side mode suppression ratio of larger than 82.6 dB is obtained, and the super-mode noise spur at an offset frequency of 5.9 MHz is suppressed 15 dB to -145 dBc/Hz level compared with the conventional COED.

Abstract:The method of generating equal-amplitude spectral lines by multi-frequency phase modulation is used in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression. The spectra of three, five, seven, and eleven equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained in experiment with flatnesses less than 0.3 dB. Theoretical research on SBS suppression shows that the threshold power after modulation is in reverse proportion to the maximum square of amplitude moduli of fundamental frequency and the nth harmonic wave. The threshold powers of three, five, seven, and eleven equal-amplitude spectral lines are improved by 5.21, 8.36, 9.39, and 10.76 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Brillouin optical spectrum analyzer (BOSA) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) can provide ultra-high resolution, which in theory can greatly improve the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) measurement accuracy, especially for systems with close channel spacing and cascaded filtering effect (CFE). BOSA utilizes narrow bandwidth SBS as an active optical band-pass filter (A-OBPF); thus, the unwanted out-of-band spectral components are actually not completely suppressed and may account for an unneglectable proportion of the spectral power filtered out, especially for broadband multi-channel signals. Such out-of-band noise (OBN) will degrade the OSNR measurement accuracy. In this paper, the OBN impact on both interpolation and reference optical spectrum (ROS) based OSNR measurement methods are investigated theoretically and experimentally. An effective mitigation method of OBN impact is then proposed and verified by experiments.

Abstract:Conventional Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) requires the process of frequency scanning, which is very time-consuming. The data acquisition speed of the conventional BOTDA is too slow to realize dynamic sensing. The use of the optical frequency comb-based BOTDA can avoid the frequency scanning and speed up the measurement. But, to achieve dynamic measurement, it is also necessary to reduce the time for signal averaging to further improve the measurement speed. However, few averaging times lead to poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which will limit the sensing performance of the system. Block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) algorithm is proposed to achieve the denoising of sensing signals in the sweep-free BOTDA using intensity-modulated direct-detection optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. The impact of the BM3D parameters on the denoising performance is analyzed, which is used to realize parameter optimization. To demonstrate the denoising performance of BM3D under different noise levels, white Gaussian noise with different standard deviation (STD) is added to the original sensing signal. When the STD of the added noise is 0.07 mV, the SNR after denoising using optimized BM3D is improved by 9.7 dB for the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) and 10.6 dB for the Brillouin phase spectrum (BPS), respectively, and the frequency uncertainty is reduced to be below 1 MHz. For a wide range of noise levels, BM3D has shown excellent denoising performance, and the average SNR after denoising is improved to be 16.8 and 15.6 dB for BGS and BPS, respectively, and the corresponding frequency uncertainty is reduced to be below 1.2 MHz. Abstract:To suppress the beat noise of a low-coherence fiber interferometric system, noise constitutes in the system is analyzed and an optical fiber filter is used in the experiment. Experimental result shows that, with a filter with FWHM of 4nm, the spectral mismatch between test arm and reference arm decreases from 49 nm to 4 nm, so the beat noise in the recorded interferogram is significantly suppressed and the visibility is also noticeably improved.

Abstract:A concise and adaptive sidelobe suppression algorithm based on a least mean square (LMS) filter is proposed for pulse-compressed signals of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) system. The algorithm is suitable for the denoising filtering process of phase coding OTDR (PC-OTDR) systems and mitigates the sidelobe effect due to matched filtering. In a simulation experiment, Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signals including phase-coded pulse signals are generated and decoded to verify that the LMS algorithm can eliminate the sidelobes more effectively than the windowing method and the recursive least squares (RLS) method. Then, the PC-OTDR system is set up and combined with the LMS algorithm for positioning experiments. The results show that the peak side lobe ratio (PSLR) of the signals can reach −15.86 dB, which is 4.26 dB lower than the raw pulse compressed signal.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel in-band optical signal-to-noise-ratio (OSNR) and spectrum monitoring technique based on swept coherent detection. This technique measures the signal and the in-band amplified spontaneous emission spectra by properly adjusting the polarization states of the signal and the local oscillator. A high resolution of 0.002 nm is achieved. By integrating the detected spectra of the signal and the noise, the in-band OSNR can be obtained in a very precise manner. We monitor the OSNR values with high accuracy in the range of 10-30 dB.

Abstract:Noise can reduce the performance of the OOK matching system, leading to matching errors. For correct the errors, this paper applies a cascaded noise suppression structure and places it in the recirculating loop of the OOK matching system. The devices of the noise suppression structure used are mainly highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF), all-optical filter, all-optical multiplexer and erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). Through the simulation, we demonstrate that after adding the noise suppression structure, the system can obtain correct matching results under the same noise environment. For examples, it can correct errors in 16 bit data sequence matching with 8 bit target sequence when the input optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is between 22dB and 30dB and the noise figure of amplifier is 4dB.
Polarization- and Wavelength-Independent SBS-based Filters for High Resolution Optical Spectrum Measurement

Abstract:A polarization-independent narrow passband optical filter with a FWHM bandwidth of ~10 MHz based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By optimizing the parameters of a depolarizer consisting of a power-splitting Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure, degree of polarization (DOP) of the pump source can be reduced to less than 5%. Consequently frequency response of the SBS-based filter remains almost unchanged when the state of polarization (SOP) of the input signal varies and the corresponding polarization-dependent gain (PDG) is less than 1 dB. And the experimental results also indicate that the proposed filter can realize the wavelength-independent operation over a range of ~30 nm. Furthermore, high resolution optical spectrum measurement utilizing this novel filter is investigated. For an input signal with a frequency interval of 30 MHz in arbitrary SOP, spectral details can be clearly observed and the power stability of the measured spectra can be improved from 3~5 dB to less than 0.5 dB, which benefitting from the polarization independent operation of the forementioned filter. Moreover, considering the resolution degradation of the measured spectra induced by the frequency shift in the depolarizer, a sweep speed of 5 nm/s for the pump source and a delayed fiber length of 2000 m in the MZI should be used to guarantee the desired high spectral resolution of ~10 MHz.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high selectivity rectangular optical filter based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect in fiber with bandwidth from 1 to 3 GHz. By using pump-splitting dual-stage configuration, the filter selectivity has been improved by more than 16 dB and exceeded 40 dB within 2-GHz bandwidth. The filter shape is well controlled by using precise digital feedback compensation and nonlinearity management. We also analyze the noise performance of both the single-stage and dual-stage filters by evaluating the signal-to-noise ratio of the amplified signal using coherent detection. The results show that the dual-stage approach performs better than the single-stage architecture in achieving higher selectivity and improving noise performance. The inherent tuning flexibility with improved performance makes the proposed SBS filter one of the best candidates for microwave photonic applications.

Abstract:High-resolution optical spectroscopy is a significant approach to reveal the inherent laws of devices and systems. Although optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has achieved a resolution of ∼10 pm, when the signal power increases, the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) will saturate and cause resolution degradation. In order to solve this problem, we introduce shape factor k to describe the variation of BGS with signal power, and adopt the BGS as the point spread function (PSF). Then the signal is divided into several intervals with equal frequency spacing, where the BGS does not change. On this basis, we perform the Jansson-Van Cittert (JVC) algorithm to complete deconvolution in each interval with power variable PSF. The proposed method is used to test the periodic signal in SBS-OSA. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the spectral resolution from 22 MHz to 11 MHz when the frequency interval is 14 MHz and the signal power is −5 dBm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new technique for monitoring optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). The noisy signal to be measured is split into two paths. With offset optical bandpass filters and balanced radio-frequency subtraction after detection, the signal is separated from the beat noise. OSNR can then be monitored by analyzing this beat noise. An experiment for a 10-Gb/s system shows that for OSNR in the range of 10-30 dB, the proposed OSNR monitoring scheme produces errors of less than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:Tunable narrow-band optical filter (TNOF) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has been applied in various applications such as microwave photonics and a high-resolution optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). While the frequency response of a SBS-based filter has always been an important characteristic in the reported studies, few have addressed the issue of the filter response under a continuously tuning condition. When the tuning speed is too fast, the filter response will change and cause spectral distortion. In this paper, the frequency response of SBS-TNOF under a wavelength-swept pump (i.e., continuously tuning) condition is investigated and modeled. Experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis and verify that the broadening of the SBS-TNOF response is induced by the pump wavelength difference along different positions of the fiber, which can be explained as convolution with broadband pump as well. Based on the widely used Richardson–Lucy deconvolution algorithm and proposed SBS-TNOF response model, the distorted responses are successfully reconstructed and the sweep speed dependency is almost eliminated. Commonly used on-off keying signal is tested using the proposed reconstruction method to assess its performance in the SBS-OSA. Both the overall profile and the detail of the signal spectra are significantly recovered, and the quantitatively evaluation illustrates that the feasible sweep speed can be improved from ∼45 nm/s to over 95 nm/s.

Abstract:To achieve a narrow bandwidth optical filter with a wide swept range for new generation optical spectrum analysis (OSA) of high performance optical sensors, an optoelectronic equivalent narrowband filter (OENF) was investigated and a swept optical filter with bandwidth of several MHz and sweep range of several tens of nanometers was built using electric filters and a sweep laser as local oscillator (LO). The principle of OENF is introduced and analysis of the OENF system is presented. Two electric filters are optimized to be RBW filters for high and medium spectral resolution applications. Both simulations and experiments are conducted to verify the OENF principle and the results show that the power uncertainty is less than 1.2% and the spectral resolution can reach 6 MHz. Then, a real-time wavelength calibration system consisting of a HCN gas cell and Fabry-Perot etalon is proposed to guarantee a wavelength accuracy of +/- 0.4 pm in the C-band and to reduce the influence of phase noise and nonlinear velocity of the LO sweep. Finally, OSA experiments on actual spectra of various optical sensors are conducted using the OENF system. These experimental results indicate that OENF system has an excellent capacity for the analysis of fine spectrum structures.
