Abstract:Near-field focusing characteristics of transmitarray antennas are investigated. The design procedure is summarized and a Ku-band focused transmitarray antenna is presented where the elements are aperture-coupled patches interconnected with stripline delays. The focusing performance of the transmitarray is compared with classic far-field designs. It is shown that a near-field focused reflectarray can be a good candidate for applications requiring high microwave power.

Abstract:This article presents a detailed procedure for design, modeling, full-wave simulation, and near-field diagnostics of reflectarray antennas, through a case study of a Ka-band reflectarray antenna with 437 elements. A comparison between analytical approaches and full-wave simulations for reflectarray radiation analysis is also presented, illustrating the necessity of full-wave approaches for an accurate analysis. Furthermore, the phase shift provided by the phasing elements, in the real reflectarray configuration, is analyzed by using the near-field data from the full-wave simulation. This provides a means to diagnose a designed reflectarray, and identify phasing elements that are not providing the required phase shift. The effectiveness of the diagnostic approach is demonstrated through numerical examples.

Abstract:Beam scanning performance of active-feed reflectarray antennas are studied in this paper. The advantages of active-feed systems for high-gain beam scanning are delineated and bifocal reflectarray systems are investigated. It is shown that a conventional bifocal reflectarray cannot achieve a good performance over a wide angular range. The particle swarm optimization is then implemented to optimize the phase of the bifocal reflectarray system. A Ka-band reflectarray antenna designed for 60 degrees beam scan and optimized for two beams at +/- 30 degrees is demonstrated. Within the scanning range, the gain variation is smaller than 1.6 dB and the side lobe is lower than -15 dB.

Abstract:A detailed overview of various design methodologies and enabling technologies for beam-scanning reflectarray antennas is presented in this article. Numerous advantages of reflectarrays over reflectors and phased arrays are delineated, and representative beam-scanning reflectarray antenna designs are reviewed. For limited field-of-view beam-scanning systems, utilizing the reflector nature of the reflectarray antenna and the feed-tuning technique can provide a simple solution with good performance. On the other hand, for applications where wideangle scan coverage is required, utilizing the array nature of the reflectarray and the aperture phase-tuning approach are the more suitable choices. There are various enabling technologies available for both design methodologies, making them a suitable choice for the new generation of high-speed, high-gain beam-scanning antennas.

Abstract:A kind of reflectarray antenna with the characteristics of near-field focusing at 140 GHz is investigated in this paper. The element is a cross-shaped structure, which is implemented on the TLY-5 substrate and fabricated by the PCB technology. A pyramidal horn is used to feed the reflectarray. In this design, numerical simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the radiated electromagnetic power can be focused in a fixed target area. Such a near-field characteristic of the proposed re-flectarray can be a feasible candidate for the Terahertz imaging and detection in the future research.

Abstract:A new design methodology is proposed for high-gain beam-scanning reflectarray antennas. Various approaches for designing beam-scanning reflectarray antennas are first reviewed and it is shown that for limited scan coverage, utilizing the feed displacement technique is a convenient design approach. To improve the scan coverage, a single-reflector bifocal aperture phase distribution is proposed for the reflectarray antenna, and is further optimized to improve the beam-scanning performance. Four reflectarray prototypes, each corresponding to a specific aperture phase distribution, have been fabricated and tested. A Ka-band reflectarray antenna with 60 degrees scan coverage achieving 30-dB gain and side-lobe level below 15 dB is demonstrated. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Compared with the traditional focused antenna, the beam-reconfigurable elements can improve the focusing gain and the focusing ability. A 6×6 focused microstrip array antenna with the focal distance of 100 mm is designed to verify the proposed design method.

Abstract:This chapter reviews the available design methodologies for beam-scanning reflectarray antennas and presents a comparative study on the performance of these approaches, with the aim of providing guidelines for antenna engineers to select a suitable design for their systems. It also reviews some of the different reflector configurations that have been developed for beam-scanning reflectarray antennas. Different approaches are available for tuning the phase of reflectarray elements, which in general can be categorized into three groups namely: elements with phase/time delay lines, variable size elements, and rotated elements. The chapter outlines the basic design methodologies and enabling technologies for beam-scanning reflectarrays, and also then reviews some recent examples. However, in comparison with the very mature technology in beam-forming reflector systems and phased array antennas, the reflectarray technology is still in its development stage, and explores many advanced design concepts.

Abstract:Planar reflectarray antennas with spherical phase distribution are studied in this paper. Analytical expressions are derived for the aperture phase distribution, and the restricted aperture approach is used to minimize the effects of spherical aberration. The optimal feed position is determined by means of a phase error analysis, and a planar reflectarray with 30 dB gain and 30 degrees elevation coverage is studied for two-dimensional beam-scanning. These studies show that planar reflectarrays with spherical phase distribution can be a suitable choice for high-gain two-dimensional beam-scanning applications.

Abstract:To achieve wide-angle frequency scanning, a broadband 1-bit millimeter-wave reflectarray with 30×30 unit cells is proposed. Here we design a meta-atom in two states with a phase difference of 180º±30º from 16 to 29 GHz to realize a 1-bit coding reflectarray. The 1-bit phase distribution is arrayed based on generalized Snell’s law under oblique incidence. The simulation results show the proposed reflectarray has the scanning range from 0º to 36º in the operating frequency band (16-29 GHz), indicating that the proposed reflectarray has the ability of wide-angle frequency scanning. Compared to existing frequency-scanning arrays, the proposed reflectarray has the advantages in scanning range and maximum gain. Therefore, the proposed reflectarray may have potential application in near-field sensing systems.

Abstract:This letter presents a phased-array fed reflector (PAFR) antenna for limited scanning based on the classic bifocal reflector curves. The array is realized by 64 elements and a relatively uniform field distribution on the illuminated region is obtained by fine optimization to further improve the aperture efficiency. The prototype demonstrates a high directivity up to 41.5 dBi at 2.2 GHz and a 1-dB relative bandwidth of 10%. The scan losses are less than 1 dB over the ±4.5◦ scanning angle, which shows interest for broadband payloads to be embarked on future communication satellites.

Abstract:Reflectarray antennas show momentous promise as a cost-effective high-gain antenna, capable of generating multiple simultaneous beams. A systematic study on various design methods of single-feed multi-beam reflectarray antennas is presented in this communication. Two direct design methods for multi-beam reflectarrays, geometrical method and superposition method, are investigated first. It is demonstrated that although both methods could generate a multi-beam radiation pattern, neither approach provides satisfactory performance, mainly due to high side-lobe levels and gain loss in these designs. The alternating projection method is then implemented to optimize the phase distribution on the reflectarray surface for multi-beam performance. Mask definition and convergence condition of the optimization are studied for multi-beam reflectarray designs. Finally a Ka-band reflectarray prototype is fabricated and tested which shows a good quad-beam performance.

Abstract:In this letter, a near-field focused array antenna is applied to two-dimensional microwave imaging, which steers its focus on the designed focal plane by changing the operating frequency and by phase control in two directions, respectively. The imaging system is composed of this array and two microstrip antennas, as receiver and transmitters, respectively. Simulations and measurements have proved the feasibility of the image reconstruction approach. The proposed method has a high imaging speed due to fast electrical beam scan, and thanks to the frequency scan performance of the array in one dimension, it also shows a low-cost property against the fully phased method.

Abstract:This paper presents characteristic comparisons between array, reflectarray and elliptic reflector antennas which can be implemented to radiate fields focused in the near zone of antenna aperture. A potential application, as to be demonstrated later in this paper, is for RFID reader applications at 2.4 GHz. The comparisons include beamwidth, field strength and contoured patterns, which allows one to justify the selection of a proper antenna type for practical applications.
