Abstract:This paper is devoted to characterizing the specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution of a human body model in a vehicle-based shelter in the presence of high-power intentional electromagnetic pulse (IEMP) radiation using a modified finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The proposed method combines the FDTD(2, 4) method along with dielectric conformal techniques, where the updating equations of FDTD(2, 4) method are modified by introducing an effective dielectric constant and a new conductivity derived by area average of different dielectric regions including coating layer in nine spatial discrete cells. Numerical results show that our method even with coarse meshes has good agreements and efficiency comparing with the traditional FDTD method and CST simulation tool. Furthermore, the proposed method is applied to predict the SAR distribution of human body in a vehicle-based metallic shelter, where the peak SAR and average SAR are captured and compared in the presence of an IEMP with different polarizations and incident angles.

Abstract:A low specific absorption rate (SAR) and high on-body efficiency tri-band smartwatch antenna is designed utilizing the theory of characteristic modes (TCM) of composite perfect electric conductors and lossy dielectric structures. The antenna works in the GPS frequency band, WLAN 2.4 GHz/Bluetooth frequency band, and 5G frequency band. After analyzing the characteristic modes of the antenna and human body in the above three frequency bands, the characteristic modes with small modal coupling coefficients (MCCs) are selected and excited. Due to the small mutual coupling between the antenna and the human body, the proposed antenna has good performance on both SAR and on-body efficiency. Its measured 10 g average body SAR is lower than 1.3 W/kg. When it is placed 0 mm above the body, its on-body efficiency is 9.3%–9.88% in the GPS frequency band, 12%–14.2% in the WLAN 2.4 GHz/Bluetooth frequency band, and 17.3%–20.1% in the 5G frequency band.

Abstract:High power electromagnetic radiation may cause certain damage on human body working on a warship deck. Therefore, it is very important to accurately characterize such radiation effect so as to further protect the human body in an appropriate way. In this paper, finite difference time domain (FDTD) method together with the technique for treating dielectric boundaries is employed for numerically characterizing specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution of a human body model in the presence of high power radar wave radiation on the warship deck. In particular, the relations between SAR distribution and incident radar wave parameters are examined and compared, including the incident wave angle, polarization state and its strength. Also, accumulated power in the human body is evaluated as a function of incident or action time of the incident radar wave.

Abstract:Smart watch antenna design is challenging due to the limited available area and the contact with the human body. The strap of smart watch can be utilized effectively for integration of the antenna. In this study, an antenna integrated on a smart watch strap model using computer simulation technology (CST) was designed. The antenna was designed for industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) frequency bands at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz. Roger 3003C was used as substrate due to its semi-flexible nature. The antenna size is 28.81 × 19.22 × 1.58 mm3 and it has a gain of 1.03 and 5.97 dB, and efficiency of 80% and 95%, at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz, on the smart watch strap, respectively. A unit cell was designed having a dimension of 19.19 × 19.19 × 1.58 mm3 to mitigate the effect of back radiation and to enhance the gain. The antenna backed by the unit cell exhibited a gain of 2.44 and 6.17 dB with efficiency of 50% and 72% at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz, respectively. The AMC-backed antenna was integrated into a smart watch strap and placed on a human tissue model to study its human proximity effects. The specific absorption rate (SAR) values were calculated to be 0.19 and 1.18 W/kg at the designed ISM frequencies, and are well below the permissible limit set by the FCC and ICINPR. Because the antenna uses flexible material for wearable applications, bending analysis was also undertaken. The indicated results prove that bending along the x- and y-axes has a negligible effect on the antenna’s performance and the antenna showed excellent performance in the human proximity test. The measured results of the fabricated antenna were comparable with the simulated results. Thus, the designed antenna is compact, has high gain, and can be used effectively for wireless IoT applications.

Abstract:This paper mainly focuses on the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the dual-element LTE MIMO antenna in mobile phones. Four designs of dual-element MIMO antenna (namely, dual semi-ground-free planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA), co-located antenna, dual OG PIFA in parallel position, and dual OG PIFA in orthogonal position) are studied under four typical LTE frequency points (0.75, 0.85, 1.9, and 2.1/2.6 GHz) when the ground plane length varies from 90 to 150 mm. The SAR, when dual elements operate simultaneously, is also studied through the SAR to PEAK location spacing ratio (SPLSR) according to the FCC standard. The simulations are carried out on both an SAM head phantom and a flat phantom by CST 2011, and measurements on the flat phantom are made with iSAR and DASY4 to verify the accuracy of our simulations.

Abstract:An experimental wireless link and specific absorption rate (SAR) assessment is presented in this work. A compact planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is designed and evaluated for biotelemetry application as an antenna at 2.45 GHz band. The proposed antenna provided a satisfactory bandwidth per unit volume using a two-layered stacked structure consisting of a high-frequency laminate and a low loss ceramic layer. The antenna was first co-designed inside several different types of phantom boxes to optimize its performance, considering computational resources. Next, a semisolid intestinal phantom model used in simulations were chosen to be fabricated for experimental evaluations. Evaluation results indicated a satisfactory antenna's operation from 2.13 to 2.81 GHz (bandwidth of 27.8%), with realized gains of -26.49 dBi when implanted at 45 mm inside the phantom. Next, measurements were performed on the antenna's communication link with a wearable antenna to study the effects its depth (from 10 to 45mm), indicating transmission coefficients of between -40 and -60 dB at 2.45 GHz. Finally, its SAR levels are evaluated experimentally using a commercial measurement system when implanted within the human tissue. Results indicated satisfactory level of 0.685 W/kg (averaged over 10 g of tissues) and is suitable for biotelemetry application.

Abstract:A high-order dielectric conformal technique based on the modified finite difference time domain (FDTD) method has been proposed in this paper to predict the specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution of a human body model illuminated by some typical radar sources on ship platforms. The conformal technique introduces an effective dielectric constant and a new conductivity derived by linear average of different dielectric regions in nine spatial discrete cells to modify the update equations of FDTD method. Furthermore, the effects of incident radar signals with different incident angles and polarizations on the SAR distribution are characterized in detail and the simulation results also show that our method has good accuracy and computing efficiency compared with the traditional methods.

Our proposed antennas can cover cellular bands down to 700 MHz and up to 2.7GHz. Their performance in the free space and user cases are measured and discussed. The SAR evaluation guideline from FCC is also introduced and SAR measurement results are shown.

Abstract:A flexible dual-band antenna with a metamaterial structure (MS) is presented. Polyimide substance, which makes the antenna thin and bendable, is used as the substrate for the antenna. When the MS is placed between the antenna and the human’s forearm, the antenna gain is increased by 9.3 and 5.37 dB, and the radiation efficiency is increased by 48.4% and 35.7%, at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz, respectively. In addition, the specific absorption rate is decreased by more than 70%, considering the limitations imposed by Federal Communications Commission and the regulation of International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) for the frequencies cited above. The fabricated prototype of the antenna with the integrated MS was investigated by placing it on different places of human body, as also on different human bodies. The obtained results show that the proposed antenna is safe and suitable for use, in terms of the ICNIRP standards of World Health Organization.

Abstract:In the conventional model to explain the antenna-phantom interaction for specific absorption rate (SAR) analysis, antenna structures are treated as perfect electric conductors. However, such a model does not suffice to analyze complementary antenna structures, i.e., aperture antennas. In this paper, an antenna-phantom model for aperture antennas is introduced considering the tangential electric field generated by the equivalent magnetic currents as the primary contributor to the peak SAR level. When the out-of-phase tangential electric field of the second-order modes for a slot antenna is achieved, the peak 10-g SAR levels are lower than that is caused by a conventional slot antenna with the first-order mode in the same condition due to destructive superposition. Therefore, the proposed antenna-phantom model is helpful to guide the aperture antenna design for the SAR compliance purposes.

Abstract:To adapt to the application of wireless body area network (WBAN), a wearable flexible dual‐band antenna is developed, which has a compact size of 17 × 29 × 0.15 mm3 and a better bandwidth of 61.2% and 43.1% at 2.4 and 5.8 GHz, respectively. The dual‐band characteristic is achieved by slotting technique without changing the contour size. A dual‐band metamaterial structure (MS) is designed to improve radiation performance and reduce the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the proposed antenna. To verify the validity of the MS, we build two simulation human models. The forward gain of the antenna is increased and the SAR is significantly decreased when adding the MS between antenna and human skin. The antenna is designed and fabricated on a flexible substrate, and its performance is verified for both flat and curved configurations. To examine its performance as a wearable antenna, it is measured on a human body. The measurements show an excellent agreement with the simulations. Good performances of designed antenna make it potential to application of the miniaturized wearable devices.

Abstract:A novel dual-wideband textile antenna designed for wearable applications is introduced in this study. Embedding antennas into wearable devices requires a detailed analysis of the specific absorption rate (SAR) to ensure safety. To achieve this, SAR values were meticulously simulated and evaluated within a human voxel model, considering various body regions such as the left/right head and the abdominal region. The proposed antenna is a monopole design utilizing denim textile as the substrate material. The characterization of the denim textile substrate is carried out using two different methods. The first analysis included a DAC (Dielectric Assessment Kit), while a ring resonator technique was employed for the second examination. Operating within the frequency bands of (58.06%) 2.2–4 GHz and (61.43) 5.3–10 GHz, the antenna demonstrated flexibility in its dual-wideband capabilities. Extensive simulations and tests were conducted to assess the performance of the antenna in both flat and bent configurations. The SAR results obtained from these tests indicate that the antenna complies with safety standard limits when integrated with the human voxel model. This validation underscores the potential of the proposed antenna for seamless integration into wearable applications, offering a promising solution for future developments in this domain.

Abstract:In this paper, a wearable antenna array based on a 9 × 3 artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) array is proposed with the characteristics of compact, low profile, low specific absorption rate (SAR), high front-to-back ratio (FBR) and high gain for wireless body area network (WBAN) bands. The proposed wearable antenna consists of a four-element array and an AMC array. The size of antenna array loaded AMC is 137.7 × 45.9 mm 2 . The dielectric substrate of the antenna and the AMC structure are made of 0.1 mm liquid crystal polymer material, which is flexible and low profiled. The antenna operates from 5.62 to 6 GHz after the AMC structure is loaded. The gain increases by 3.23 dB, reaching 12.03 dB at 5.8 GHz. And the FBR value is raised by 26.04 dB. The highest SAR value of the simulated antenna on the human model is 0.0496 W/kg, far less than the US federal or EU requirements. After constructing and testing the antenna, the outcomes of the tests agreed with the results of the simulation. The flexible antenna array with AMC structure has good prospect in WBAN applications.

Abstract:Smartwatch is a potential candidate for the Internet of Things (IoT) hub. However, the performance of smartwatch antennas is severely restricted by the smartwatch structure, especially when the antennas are designed by traditional methods. For adapting smartwatches to the role of IoT hub, a novel method of designing multi-band smartwatch antenna is presented in this paper, aiming at increasing the number of frequency bands, omni-directivity, and structural suitability. Firstly, the fundamental structure (including the full screen and the system PCB) of the smartwatch is analyzed as a whole by characteristic mode analysis (CMA). Thus, abundant resources of characteristic modes are introduced. The fundamental structure is then modified as the radiator of a multi-band antenna. Then, a non-radiating capacitive coupling element (CCE) excites the desired four 0.5-wavelength modes from this structure. This method could fully utilize the intrinsic modes of the smartwatch structure itself, thus exhibits multiple advantages: significantly small size, smaller ground, omni-directional radiation, and fitting to the full-screen smartwatch structure.

Abstract:This article presents a defected ground structure (DGS)-based deformed microstrip wearable antenna designed for ON/OFF body smart wearable Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The antenna design has certain features such as lightweight, cost-effectiveness, low profile, and flexibility. Fabricated using a Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate with a thickness of 0.508 mm, the proposed antenna includes a deformed rectangular patch and DGS to enhance impedance matching and radiation performance at 2.45 GHz. The results show a low reflection coefficient of approximately -36 dB and a peak gain of 5.61 dBi at 2.45 GHz in a free-space environment without bending. Additionally, the specific absorption rate (SAR) is measured to be 0.249 W/kg for 1g of tissue and 0.137 W/kg for 10g of tissue when the antenna is placed 0.32λ0 away from the body. The study also indicates that SAR values decrease as the distance between the antenna and the body increases. The antenna prototype has been fabricated and experimentally tested under various ON/OFF body conditions and bending scenarios. The measured results closely align with the simulated data, confirming the antenna suitability for ON/OFF body IoT applications. Noteworthy features of the proposed wearable antenna include its conformability and suitability for body-worn applications, making it an excellent candidate for ON/OFF body smart wearable IoT devices.

Abstract:A design of smartwatch integrated antenna with polarization diversity is proposed. An annular ring is integrated in the framework of smartwatch, and excited by two ports. One port is fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) line loaded with a T-shaped matching network, and the other is fed by a coplanar strip line (CPS). The overall model of the proposed antenna has a cylindrical shape with 38 mm diameter and 7.5 mm thickness. A metallic plate is located at the backside of the antenna to mimic the shell of smartwatch. The prototype is fabricated and measured, and the measured results agree well with the numerical ones. The two ports have orthometric radiation patterns and can cover the 2.4 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) band. The gain of the antenna is higher than 3.2 dBi in free space. The proposed antenna is also analyzed with a cubic tissue model and a wrist model in different distances between the proposed antenna and human models. The performances on body scenarios are also acceptable. The values of specific absorption rate (SAR) in the cubic tissue model and wrist model are below the limitations set by both the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI). Envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) shows proposed antenna can be used in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) applications. The influence of battery and printed circuits board assembly (PCBA) on S parameters is obvious, and gain and radiation efficiency are not much affected.

Abstract:Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is currently in the marine, agriculture, geology and other fields are widely used, while the SAR antenna is one of the most important subsystems. Performance of antenna has a significant impact on the SAR sensitivity, azimuth resolution, image blur degree and other parameter. To improve SAR resolution, SAR antenna is designed and fabricated according to flexible expandable style. However, the movement of flexible antenna will have a greater impact on accuracy of SAR systems, so the motion measurement of the flexible antenna is an urgent problem. This paper studied motion measurements method based on high frame rate camera, designed and completed a flexible antenna motion measurement experiment. In the experiment the main IMU and the sub IMU were placed at both ends of the cantilever, which is simulation of flexible antenna, the high frame rate camera was placed above the main IMU, and the imaging target was set on side of the sub IMU. When the cantilever motion occurs, IMU acquired spatial coordinates of cantilever movement in real-time, and high frame rate camera captured a series of target images, and then the images was input into JTC to obtain the cantilever motion coordinates. Through the contrast and analysis of measurement results, the measurement accuracy of flexible antenna motion is verified.

Abstract:This paper presents the antenna designs for metal-bezel smartwatches aimed at reducing the wrist's effect. The design achieves this through two approaches: adding a metal plane and exciting the metal plane. By exciting the metal plane, a stronger vertical E-field is generated, which significantly reduces the wrist's loading effect. This new design is evaluated in both the Wi-Fi and GPS bands, indicating potential advancements in smartwatch antenna technology.

Abstract:<p>Microwave holography utilizes antennae for the detection of cancerous tissues in the human breast. The safety assessment of an antenna is required prior to its radiation interaction with biological tissues. In this work, a specially designed and developed Vivaldi antenna with directivity at 45° for microwave holographic imaging has been presented. A detailed simulation of Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and thermal analysis due to the radiation exposure of the designed antenna on self‐designed anatomically real breast phantoms is performed in CST environment. SAR values for 3D printed breast phantoms are also calculated experimentally. The quantitative results of SAR reveal the variation of ±10% in between the simulation and experimental results. It has been found that SAR due to the radiation of the designed antenna lies in the permissible limit. The thermal analysis in CST shows the rise of 0.096% in temperature after the exposure of 2 hours. Hence, the antenna can be used in microwave holography for breast cancer detection.</p>
