Abstract:In this letter, we propose a new method for selective imaging of surface bound probes or simultaneous imaging of surface bound plus fluorescence from dye molecules in bulk water solution. The principle of this method relies on use of two optical modes with different mode distributions, filed decay lengths and polarization states that are sustaining in a plasmon waveguide. The two modes with different decay lengths couple with dye molecules of different regions, at different distances from the PCW-water interface. The emission from two different regions occur as two coupled emission rings with different polarizations and emitting angles in the back focal plane (BFP) images. By using an electric-driven liquid crystal in BFP imaging, we selectively imaged surface or surface plus bulk fluorescence. Accordingly two coupled emissions can be switched ON or OFF independently, that are for either surface or bulk fluorescence imaging. Our work provides a new method for fluorescence imaging or sensing just by using a planar multilayer film, which may be a useful for ﬂuorescence-based techniques in chemistry, materials science, molecular biology, and medicine.

Abstract:We propose a novel microscopy method, combining surface wave illumination and the Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) algorithm to achieve super-resolution (SR) imaging. In our system, an oil-immersion objective lens is used to excite both the total internal reflection (TIR) evanescent waves and the surface plasmon waves (SPWs), which illuminate the sample with large wave vectors. Through the FPM algorithm, a resolution approximately twice that of conventional wide-field microscopy is obtained. Meanwhile, we could retrieve the sample's quantitative phase map in order to obtain its surface profile. Importantly, the field enhancement from a SPW has improved the contrast of the reconstructed images, which is critical for revealing the finer structural details of the specimen. In our experiments, we have imaged metallic gratings with a 120 or 150 nm wide line and trench features. We accurately retrieved their axial dimensions with a lateral resolution better than 240 nm that is close to the theoretical resolution of 215 nm, thus demonstrating the quantitative phase imaging capability of our technique. As this approach provides a label-free solution for intensity and phase imaging of samples with lateral resolution exceeding the limit introduced by the optical system, it can be potentially used in a wide range of noninvasive biological imaging applications. Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Abstract:Polarization interferometry (PI) techniques, which are able to improve surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing performance and reduce restrictions on allowable parameters of SPR-supporting metal films, have been experimentally realized only in SPR sensors using monochromatic light as a source. Wavelength-interrogation SPR sensors modulated by PI techniques have not been reported due to the wavelength-sensitive characterization of PI phase compensators. In this work we develop a specially designed rhombic prism for phase compensating which is totally insensitive to wavelength. For the first time we successfully apply PI technique to a wavelength-interrogation SPR imager. This imager is able to offer two-dimensional imaging of the whole array plane. As a result of PI modulation, resolutions of 1.3 x 10(-6) refractive index unit (RIU) under the normal condition and 3.9 x 10(-7) RIU under a more time-consuming condition are acquired. The application of this imager was demonstrated by reading microarrays for identification of bacteria, and SPR results were confirmed by means of fluorescence imaging. Abstract:In this Letter we investigate the subwavelength imaging of a three-dimensional plasmon superlens based on the full vector wave simulations of optical wave propagation and transmission. The optical transfer functions are computed. Comparisons are made between the results of lenses with flat and periodic/random rough surfaces. We also study the problem of practical imaging system geometry using laser as an illumination source. Results show that the lens with periodic or random roughness can reduce the field interference effects, and provide improved focus on the transmission field and the Poynting flux. We illustrate that the subwavelength roughness in a plasmon lens can enhance the image resolution over a flat lens for both matched and unmatched permittivity conditions. The enhancement of resolution occurs because the introduced subwavelength roughness can amplify the evanescent wave components and suppress the surface plasmon resonance peaks.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) with single-direction illumination is a powerful platform for biomedical imaging because of its wide-field, label-free, and high-surface-sensitivity imaging capabilities. However, two disadvantages prevent wider use of SPRM. The first is its poor spatial resolution that can be as large as several micrometers. The second is that SPRM requires use of metal films as sample substrates; this introduces working wavelength limitations. In addition, cell culture growth on metal films is not as universally available as growth on dielectric substrates. Here we show that use of azimuthal rotation illumination allows SPRM spatial resolution to be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude. The metal film can also be replaced by a dielectric multilayer and then a different label-free surface-sensitive photonic microscopy is developed, which has more choices in terms of the working wavelength, polarization, and imaging section, and will bring opportunities for applications in biology.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are travelling surface waves that have shown promise for applications in nanophotonics as they provide a direct route toward photon-mediated electrical signal generation – a central paradigm for speeding up and scaling down photonic elements. SPP waves have also generated fundamental interest due to their high-field strength and sub-wavelength confinement, properties that have enabled the surface-enhanced Raman effect. Over the last decade, photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) has emerged as a pioneering technique for imaging surface electric fields through ultrashort laser pulse mediated electron emission and has therefore become an indispensable tool for characterizing plasmonic phenomena at interfaces in a variety of materials. PEEM offers nanometer spatial resolution and femtosecond temporal resolution, allowing SPPs to be prepared, monitored, and manipulated on the nanometer-femtosecond scale. Through a brief review of recent reports, we aim to introduce PEEM-based SPP imaging and manipulation modalities and highlight their utility in the context of emerging nanoscale and quantum materials science advancements.

Abstract:A comprehensive system with a high speed is built for imaging the terahertz (THz) surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Both the amplitude and the phase information of the focusing THz-SPPs excited by a semicircular plasmonic lens are achieved by using this system. The amplitude images present the focusing profiles of the THz-SPPs with different frequencies and the phase images reveal the Gouy phase shift as the THz-SPPs evolving through the focus. The simulations are also performed and a good agreement between the experimental and simulated results has been found.

Abstract:Manipulation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) by phase modulation of incident light beams is proposed with analytical and numerical verifications when an optical vortex (OV) beam is employed as an example. Fundamental functionalities of a plasmonic chip such as in-plane focusing, coupling and multiplexing of SPP by sequentially varying the topological charge of OV beam are demonstrated. Complementary to the manually-controlled optical-path-different technique reported in literature, the proposed method reveals a direct phase transform from OV beam to SPP with dynamic and reconfigurable advantages.

Abstract:Theoretical model of the enhanced optical resolution of the surface plasmon immersion microscope is developed, which is based on the optics of surface plasmon Bloch waves in the tightly bound approximation. It is shown that a similar resolution enhancement may occur in a more general case of an immersion microscope based on photonic crystal materials with either positive or negative effective refractive index. Both signs of the effective refractive index have been observed in our experiments with surface plasmon immersion microscope, which is also shown to be capable of individual virus imaging.

Abstract:The comprehensive capture of near-field spatiotemporal information of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is a prerequisite for revealing their physical nature. In this study, we first performed an independent, spatiotemporal imaging of the out-of-plane and in-plane components of SPP near-fields in a femtosecond light-excited trench using an obliquely incident time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy (TR-PEEM). We did the capture by imaging of the interference patterns induced by a superposition of the <math display="inline"> <mrow> <mi>p</mi> </mrow> </math> - or <math display="inline"> <mrow> <mi>s</mi> </mrow> </math> -polarized probe light, with the out-plane or in-plane components of SPP near-fields, under the noncollinear excitation mode. The method may be used to reconstruct a 3D SPP spatiotemporal field. Moreover, we demonstrated that the fringe shift of the interference patterns between the captured in-plane and out-of-plane components of the SPP field in PEEM images corresponds to the 1/4 fringe period, which is attributed to <math display="inline"> <mrow> <mi>π</mi> <mo>/</mo> <mn>2</mn> </mrow> </math> out of phase of the out-of-plane and in-plane near-field components of SPP. The resulting TR-PEEM images are supported by a classical wave mode and FDTD simulations. Essentially, the measured <math display="inline"> <mrow> <mi>π</mi> <mo>/</mo> <mn>2</mn> </mrow> </math> phase difference between the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the SPP indicated a rotating field component in the propagation plane, i.e., that the SPP exhibits an elliptically polarized electric field in the propagation plane. The experimental results presented herein provide direct evidence of SPP having the inherent attributes of transverse spin angular momentum.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are made of two-dimensional arrays of subwavelength nanostructures that form a spatially varying optical response, to control the wave fronts of optical waves. As the feature size of its constituent materials is nanoscale, investigation of the light-nanostructure interactions in the near field is critical for understanding the novel properties of metasurfaces. Here, we used a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) to observe the near-field distribution of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) from a ring-shaped metasurface under illumination of circularly polarized light. It was found that with an additional degree of freedom of the geometric phase provided by the regularly arranged metamolecules, control over the near-field interference of the SPPs can be achieved, which is governed by the metasurface geometric symmetry that can be tuned by its topological charge. Meanwhile, the planar chiral character of the metamolecules exerts a deep influence on the near-field interference patterns. Our results can pave the way for active control of SPP propagation in near fields and have potential applications in highly integrated optical communication systems.

Abstract:Direct far-field visualization and characterization of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are of great importance for fundamental studies and technological applications. To probe the evanescently confined plasmon fields, one usually requires advanced near-field techniques, which is typically not applicable for real-time, high-throughput detecting or mapping of SPPs in complicated environments. Here, we report the utilization of rare-earth-doped nanoparticles to quantitatively upconvert invisible, evanescently confined SPPs into visible photoluminescence emissions for direct far-field visualization of SPPs in a complicated environment. The observed interference fringes between the SPPs and the coherent incident light at the metal surface provide a quantitative measurement of the SPP wavelength and the SPP propagating length and the local dielectric environments. It thus creates a new signaling pathway to sensitively transduce the local dielectric environment change into interference periodicity variation, enabling a new design of directly measurable, spectrometer-free optical rulers for rapid, ultrasensitive label-free detection of various biomolecules, including streptavidin and prostate-specific antigen, down to the femtomolar level.

Abstract:The resolutions of reported THz imaging techniques are limited to millimeter range, owing to a consequence of the evanescent decay of high spatial frequencies. Realizing super-resolution imaging in the THz frequency range has advantages on applications such as biomedical sensing and nondestructive testing, where the internal images of targets can be glimpsed arising from the penetrability of THz waves. In this talk, the systematic research progress on this topic made by our team is reported. To beat the diffraction limit, we have designed several kinds of near-field and far-field superlenses which are based on anisotropic metamaterials or subwavelength metallic metasurfaces. Besides, two kinds of functional couplers are also designed to realize subwavelength manipulations of spoof surface plasmon polaritons supported on metasurfaces.

Abstract:A novel optical imaging method that makes use of surface plasmon microscopy (SPM) and phase shift interferometry is developed. It is named phase shift interferometry-surface plasmon microscopy (PSI-SPM). In comparison with SPM, it can measure not only the intensity of the light reflected under SPR conditions, but also the phase of the light. The images of higher resolution (compared with SPM) can be obtained through the synthesis of the phase (color) and intensity (brightness) information.

Abstract:We demonstrate spin-induced manipulation of surface-plasmon polariton (SPP) by exploiting the plasmonic spin Hall effect. By constructing metasurfaces with plasmonic atoms and varying spin-dependent geometric phase, we establish a holographic interface between an incident plane wave and the SPP on an optical chip. It allows us to gain spin-splitting and flexible control of the shapes and phases of the local SPP orbitals. Furthermore, a linearly polarized incident light with rotating polarization angle can be used to play a motion picture of the orbitals. These investigations provide a feasible route to many applications, including spin-enabled imaging, data storage and integrated optics.

Abstract:Surface polaritons comprise a wealth of light–matter interactions with deep sub-wavelength scale confinement of electromagnetic modes. However, their nanoscale localized dissipation and thermalization processes are not readily accessible experimentally. Here, we introduce photothermal force microscopy to image surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in monolayer graphene through their non-radiative SiO<sub>2</sub> substrate dissipation. We demonstrate the real-space SPP imaging via photo-induced atomic force detection, and from comparison with scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy imaging attribute the force response to substrate dissipation-enhanced thermal expansion. This work illustrates that nano-optical tip–sample induced dissipative forces facilitate a direct mechanical detection of surface polariton interactions with monolayer sensitivity.

Abstract:Polarization-controlled focusing of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is experimentally and theoretically investigated in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The spiral phase distribution and the phase singularities, which, respectively, lead to the transverse shift of the focal spot for the circularly polarized THz radiation and the split of the focal spot for the linearly polarized THz radiation, are experimentally observed. Furthermore, an alternative theoretical model based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle and Fourier transformation of THz SPPs is proposed to analyze the transverse shift of the focal spot, which provides a simple way to understand the polarization-related SPP phenomena. This research is instructive for the design of polarization-based plasmonic devices.

Abstract:We propose a form of flexible wavefront manipulation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) without any mechanical motion component. An incoming light pattern, the amplitude of which is modulated by a liquid crystal spatial light modulator, is used to illuminate a grating on an Au film acting as a light-SPP coupler. The SPPs launched from the grating have the same intensity distribution as the input light pattern. By changing the input image, continuously variable in-plane SPP focusing on the Au film is implemented. The experimental results agree well with numerical simulations.
