Abstract:Bubbles generated by a pulsed discharge in water can emit extensive pulsed acoustic waves. The bubble behavior is quite important for the electroacoustic analysis. This paper presents the high-speed photographs of the plasma-containing bubble behavior under the pulsed discharges of different polarities, including a single negative bubble, single positive bubble, and bipolar bubbles. The single bubble results show that the electrobubble energy transition rate of the positive discharge is higher than that of the negative discharge. The positive bubble has longer oscillation period and lower fundamental frequency than the negative one. For the bipolar bubbles, interaction between the two bubbles influences their own behavior, irrespectively of how long the gap distance between the electrodes is, and decreases the electrobubble energy transition efficiency and the acoustic wave amplitude as well. It is also interesting that the negative bubble oscillates twice, although its energy is much lower than that of the positive bubble, and the time of the negative bubble collapse at the end of the second period almost coincides with that of the positive bubble. Finally, the positive bubble breaks into pieces and vanishes faster than the negative bubble.

Abstract:Pulsed discharge in conductive water can produce a plasma-containing bubble and radiate intensive acoustic pulses. The bubble dynamics, which determines the characteristics of the acoustic wave, is sensitive to the water temperature and ambient pressure. This paper presents the high-speed records of plasma-containing bubble behavior under different water temperatures in the range 18 degrees C-80 degrees C and ambient pressure in the range 0.1-1 MPa. The results show that a higher water temperature generates a larger bubble, larger oscillation period, and higher efficiency of the conversion of electric energy into bubble energy. The bubble energy and energy efficiency increase fast with water temperature since the rise in the initial water temperature decreases the energy consumption during the predischarge period. The ambient pressure also has an obvious effect on the maximum bubble radius and oscillation period. Both of them decrease fast when the ambient pressure increases. But, the bubble energy and energy efficiency are not so sensitive to ambient pressure, which indicates that the ambient pressure has little influence on the parameters of pulsed discharge.

Abstract:The enhancement of the bubble evolution and detachment by the swirling liquid field were experimentally investigated with a high-speed camera and particle image velocimetry in this work. The bubble growth process is greatly compressed as the characteristic of the swirling flow field becomes prominent. When the Reynolds number is low, there are three stages the bubble has to experience, while the nucleation stage occurs twice. As the Reynolds number increases, the nucleation stages gradually reduce until they disappear, and the formation stages are also reduced to only one. Further, the bubbles depart with pulsation characteristics at a high Reynolds number, statistics show two periodicities (i.e., bubble cluster and bubble subcluster), and the bubble detachment time shows a bipolar distribution. Overall, the bubble growth is strengthened by the swirling liquid in both size and time, providing a possibility that generates small bubbles using a large diameter orifice.

Abstract:We investigated the behavior of single bubbles generated by spark discharge under different electric fields and water properties. A higher discharge energy is known to generate a larger bubble. However, our results show that the hydraulic efficiency decreases with increasing charging voltage, but increases with increasing charging capacitance. We found that the water conductivity has little influence on the bubble behavior, whereas a higher water temperature generates a larger bubble with higher hydraulic efficiency. The experimental results agreed well with those of the Rayleigh-Plesset model. Overall, the hydraulic efficiency for spark-induced bubble ranges from 3.5% to 7.5%. This work helps to advance our understanding of spark-induced bubble dynamics and their applications.

Abstract:The self-focusing transmission , filamentation, breakdown of intense laser pulses in water, and sound pressure waves generated during breakdown become a hot topic of intense laser pulse application research. Ionization generated bubbles compress the surrounding water bodies, which produces sound pressure waves underwater. Based on the previous theory, a dynamic model is developed, in which the gas content, viscosity coefficient and the surface tension coefficient are considered. The collapse process of double bubbles is also modeled, which could be applied to calculate the bubble radius and generated sound pressure waves. These theories are amended by introducing varying factors of water characters at different temperatures. Calculation results show that the bubbles shrink more violently and generate higher sound pressure waves when water temperature is higher. For double bubbles, higher sound pressure waves will be generated when the two bubbles are closer. The minimum collapse radiuses are varying linearly along with the distances between bubbles, and the generated maximum sound pressures are monotonically increasing.

Abstract:We present a novel swirl-venturi microbubble generator enabled by tangential inlets in this work, and employ a high-speed camera to obtain breakup phenomena of a single bubble in both the venturi microbubble generator and the swirl-venturi microbubble generator. We observe three different breakup patterns (i.e., tensile breakup, dynamic erosive breakup, and static erosive breakup) in swirl-venturi microbubble generator, while in venturi microbubble generator only tensile breakup exists. Furthermore, both tensile breakup and dynamic erosive breakup appear less frequently with increasing liquid velocity in the swirl-venturi microbubble generator, while static erosive breakup tends to dominate. CFD simulations of liquid flow field show the existence of an apparent vortex region near the wall of the diverging section in the SVMG, which is the essential cause of the erosive breakup of bubbles. Statistical analysis results reveal that the location of bubble initial breakup in the venturi microbubble generator is close to the central axis, while in swirl-venturi microbubble generator it is near the wall and more concentrated. The swirl-venturi microbubble generator performs better than conventional venturi microbubble generators, providing a new idea for strengthening bubble breakup under high gas-liquid ratios.
The electro-acoustic transition process of pulsed corona discharge in conductive water

Abstract:A pulsed corona discharge in conductive water is studied theoretically and experimentally via pre-discharge analysis, thermodynamic and dynamic processes of a plasma-containing bubble, an acoustic signature and energy partitioning. The total particle density and electron density inside the bubble, internal temperature and pressure, bubble radius and bubble wall Mach number are simulated by solving a set of equations including the ideal gas equation, Rayleigh equation and energy balance equation. The bubble radius is also measured by a high-speed charge-coupled device camera on a homemade experimental device. The acoustic waveforms and their power spectral density are calculated indirectly. By using several diagnostic tools, the electrical parameters of the load, light emission from the plasma and acoustic waveforms are recorded simultaneously. Simulation and experimental results of the bubble radius and acoustic signature agree reasonably well over the range of energy inputs from 5 to 30 J per pulse. Different kinds of terminations or intermediates of the energy transition process are analysed through simulation and experimental data. The electro-acoustic efficiency varies from 0.8% to 1.9%, while most of the discharge energy is consumed by circuit loss, Joule heating and thermal radiation, or is transformed into kinetic energy in the water.

Abstract:The interactions of two oscillating bubbles beneath a free surface are studied with the help of high-speed photography. The collapse can produce liquid jets both in the bulk water and upon the free surface. Different interaction modes and surface jets are observed, which are significantly affected by the relative bubble-bubble distance and the relative depths below the free surface. The phenomena are summarized in a dimensionless parameter plot, where several regions are divided based on the collapse behavior. Particularly, a transition region is observed where different behaviors occur randomly. Based on the experimental results, the boundary lines between the regions are proposed in a wide range of parameters.

Abstract:This study develops a three-dimensional imaging system to obtain comprehensive information on asymmetric bubbles formed in five nozzles with exits of the same cross section to examine the relationship between their patterns of flow and their acoustic characteristics. Acoustic signals of the bubbles were recorded by a hydrophone, and were analyzed through filtering and the short-time Fourier transform. The results show that the morphology of the bubbles became complex with increasing aspect ratio of the cross section of the nozzle exit. This complexity was reflected in the shape of the bubbles as well as their manner of detachment and motion. Furthermore, the asymmetry of the bubbles had a significant impact on the sound pressure. Different bubble detachments from five nozzles can lead to different waveforms of sound pressures, viz., “triangle,” “tree,” and “fish.” The differences are proved to be closely associated with the bubbles having different patterns of flow. The work here can be used to identify the patterns of flow of bubbles, reduce noise, and detect failure.

Abstract:Bubbles have very important applications in many fields such as shipbuilding engineering, ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, medical science and so on. In this paper, the research status and the development of the bubble dynamics in terms of theory, numerical simulation and experimental technique are reviewed, which cover the underwater explosion bubble, airgun bubble, spark bubble, laser bubble, rising bubble, propeller cavitation bubble, water entry/exit cavitation bubble and bubble dynamics in other fields. Former researchers have done a lot of researches on bubble dynamics and gained fruitful achievements. However, due to the complexity of the bubble motion, many tough mechanical problems remain to be solved. Based on the research progress of bubble dynamics, this paper gives the future research direction of bubble dynamics, aiming to provide references for researches related to bubble dynamics.
Bubble Statistics in Shallow Angle Plunging Liquid Jets

Abstract:The statistical characteristics of bubble plumes generated by inclined liquid jets remain inadequately understood, particularly regarding their spatial evolution. This study employs an optical fiber probe for sequential multi-point measurements to investigate the evolution of bubble plumes produced by shallow-angle inclined jets impacting both quiescent fluid and crossflow. Measurements of air volume fractions reveal that crossflow significantly attenuates the jet's penetration capability. Under both conditions, the bubble size distributions exhibit power-law behavior, with variations in the exponents observed at different spatial locations. In quiescent water, a power-law exponent of -2 is observed within the jet impact region, where the strong shear effect of the oblique jet introduces more large bubbles and extends their survival time. This exponent gradually decreases with increasing distance from the jet's influence. In the presence of crossflow, the bubble size spectrum closely resembles that observed under breaking waves. This similarity arises because the jet induces intense surface overturning and fragmentation, becoming the primary source of bubble entrainment. Multi-point measurements further indicate that bubble fragmentation dominates near the free surface, while bubble coalescence becomes more prevalent at greater depths. The results for the bubble velocity distribution indicate that, under both conditions, the distribution of high-speed bubbles follows a power law with an exponent of -6. However, the physical mechanisms driving this behavior remain unclear.

Abstract:We captured stable self-oscillations of a toroidal bubble moving away from a laser propelled cavity object in water using a high-speed imaging system. The entire laser propelling process generates a hemispherical bubble, two toroidal bubbles, and a microbubble cluster. The hemispherical bubble is formed by laser breakdown in water. The toroidal bubbles are formed by the variation of the pressure field as a result of the propagation, reflection, and convergence of the laser plasma shockwave in the cavity.

Abstract:The study of air gun bubbles is significant to marine resource detection, and the use of clustered air guns is an effective way to reduce the undesirable bubble pulse in engineering applications. In this paper, an improved air gun bubble model is established based on the boundary element method. The mass and heat transfer of the gas from the air gun chamber to the bubble, and the heat transfer between the bubble and surrounding water, are taken into consideration. Using this model, motion of non-spherical clustered air gun bubbles is simulated. Through consideration of the bubble topology under coalescence and splitting, the multi-period pressure waves released from the clustered air guns are successfully calculated. The influence of the separation distance and the volume distribution of two bubbles on the far-field pressure wave are then investigated. A critical value for the distance between two bubbles, at which the bubble pulse is effectively suppressed, is found. Changing the bubble volume distribution not only reduces the bubble pulse but also decreases the primary pulse, provided the volumes of the two bubbles are not equal. Finally, the pressure waves generated by three bubbles and by two bubbles are compared. Although pressure waves from three bubbles have a long period, the bubble pulse attenuation effects are almost the same as those for two bubbles.

Abstract:Bubbles are widely used in industrial production, biomedical engineering, and many other fields. The analysis of the response of bubble clusters under acoustic waves is significant for the application of bubbles. In this paper, different bubble dynamics models are used to calculate the instantaneous radius of multi-bubbles, and the results corresponding to the different models are compared with those by the finite element method. In addition, the effect of bubble interactions on bubble pulsation is analyzed at different distances, and the effect of incident acoustic direction on the bubble's instantaneous radius is also investigated. The results show that time delays, which have often been neglected in previous work, should be considered except when the bubble spacing is minimal. The results calculated by the finite element method indicate that the attraction and repulsion between bubbles are alternating, which is related to the velocity field between bubbles. Moreover, the suppression or promotion of bubble interactions for bubble pulsation is affected by bubble distance under the same acoustic excitation conditions. Finally, for a bubble cluster with large bubble distances, its total scattered field relating to the incident acoustic wave can be approximated as the interference field of multiple secondary acoustic sources with the same waveform and different phases. If these bubbles are in random motion, the total scattered sound intensity of the bubble cluster is proportional to the number of bubbles.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on the pulsation characteristics of bubbles under a damaged boundary. Bubble phenomena in the fluid domain, such as bubble shape, pulsation period, water jet, and motion, are observed, and the influence of distance parameters on these phenomena is analyzed in detail with the help of high-speed photography technology. We also discuss the relationship between bubble pulsation, the water spike form, and characteristic parameters under different boundary conditions, such as different hole shapes. It is found that the broken boundary weakens the effect of the wall on bubble motion, while the shape and area of the hole exert noticeable effects on the water spike. In addition, the rising part of the free surface consisting of three parts, the water spike, water skirt I, and water skirt II, along with their evolutionary forms at the gas–liquid interface, are experimentally studied.

Abstract:Various bubble dynamics near the boundary in an acoustic field play a significantly important role in destructive erosion which has been associated with applications in industry cleaning, chemical engineering and biomedicine. But the effect mechanism of the high pressure on the boundary induce by single acoustic cavitation bubble has not been fully elucidated, which is vital for further application. The objective of this paper is to investigate the behaviors of a gas bubble near a rigid wall in a low frequency ultrasonic field. The temporal evolution of the bubble was recorded by means of synchronous high-speed recordings. Meanwhile, the time of bubble collapse, velocity of the bubble margin and the characteristics of the liquid jet were analyzed. In addition, the bubble dynamics were simulated based on potential flow theory coupled with the boundary integral method (BIM). Results are presented for a single bubble generated near the rigid wall with the normalized standoff distance γ = 1.85 under a wide range of ultrasonic power. The results show that the dynamics of the bubble can be divided into four phases: oscillation, movement, collapse and rebound. And when the applied ultrasonic power increases, the time of bubble collapse has a clear trend to decrease and the maximum velocity of the bubble margin increases apparently. Furthermore, the bubble behaviors after its first collapse, such as the number and the velocity of the effective jets, also vary evidently as the increase of the ultrasonic power. These results about bubble dynamics in ultrasonic field may be significant to determine or correct the main mechanisms of acoustic cavitation.
A Hovering Bubble with a Spontaneous Horizontal Oscillation

Abstract:Active matters, characterized by multi-mode motions, have been emerging for both engineering and biological applications. Generally, active objects rely on the symmetry-broken structures, compositions, or interfacial activities through a physical or chemical approach. Here, we report an active bubble spontaneously hovering with a horizontal oscillation at the solid/liquid interface by impacting a stationary laser beam into a liquid through a transparent solid cover. This spontaneous oscillation mode of the bubble synchronizes with that of the interfacial temperature and hydrodynamical flow. A physical mechanism is proposed, and the scaling analysis of the oscillation frequency agrees well with experiments in various liquids under different laser powers. Additionally, the bubble trajectory rotates azimuthally, arising from the symmetry breaking of the vortex pair accompanying the oscillation. Moreover, the double pendulum of oscillation bubbles has been demonstrated, achieving a preferable oscillation direction in a controllable way. These findings would not only advance our understanding of active matters but also shed light on the bubble-mediated technological applications, such as microrobots and drug deliveries.
Dynamic behavior of a single bubble between the free surface and rigid wall

Abstract:<p>The objective of this paper is to apply high-speed photography and schlieren method to investigate the bubble dynamics between the free surface and a rigid wall. The temporal evolution of the bubble shape and the free surface motion are recorded by two synchronous high-speed cameras. Experiments are carried out for a single bubble generated at various normalized stand-off distances from bubble center to the free surface and to the rigid wall. The results show that (1) three distinctive patterns are identified with the morphology of the bubble and free surface, namely single toroidal bubble without spike (STB), single toroidal bubble with a spike (STBS) and double toroidal bubbles with a spike (DTBS). (2) The dynamic characteristics of the bubble at collapse and rebound stage vary evidently at different patterns, including the bubble shape variations and free surface motion. In detail, the schlieren images show the formation and propagation of shock waves, which explains the radiative process of bubble collapse energy. (3) Qualitative comparisons are carried out for the bubble and free surface at the same pattern. And quantitative analyses are conducted for the jet velocity, bubble collapse position, bubble collapse time and spike height, etc. for different values of bubble-rigid wall distance.</p>

Experimental Study of Non-Uniform Bubbles in a Plume

Abstract:The bubble plume is an important flow phenomenon, ubiquitous in many fields. The non-uniform bubbles in a plume are often simply considered as uniform and moving with a same slip velocity in an integral model. This study aims to have a better understanding of the behavior of the non-uniform bubbles in a plume. A set of experiments are conducted in a transparent water tank, in which the air plumes are generated through different injectors to vary the spectrum of the bubble size. The shadow images of the bubbles are simultaneously recorded with the illumination of a plane backlight. The algorithm used in the image analysis for tracing the bubbles is a newly developed multi-frame method based on the predictor-corrector method, with a good accuracy in estimating the size and the velocity of the overlapped bubbles based on the bubble shadow images. The bubbles are divided into several groups by their equivalent diameters with an interval of 0.5 mm. The spectrums of the bubble size and the void fraction are measured. It is found that the bubbles of different sizes show different dynamics features, resulting in a difference in the radial distribution. It is shown that the large bubbles gather in the center of the plume, while the medium bubbles spread the widest and even wider than the small bubbles. The difference can be explained by the effects of the transverse lift force and the amplitude of the bubble oscillation.
Comprehensive analysis of spherical bubble oscillations and shock wave emission in laser-induced cavitation

Abstract:The dynamics of spherical laser-induced cavitation bubbles in water is investigated by plasma photography, time-resolved shadowgraphs, and single-shot probe beam scattering enabling to portray the transition from initial nonlinear to late linear oscillations. The frequency of late oscillations yields the bubble's gas content. Simulations with the Gilmore model using plasma size as input and oscillation times as fit parameter provide insights into experimentally not accessible bubble parameters and shock wave emission. The model is extended by a term covering the initial shock-driven acceleration of the bubble wall, an automated method determining shock front position and pressure decay, and an energy balance for the partitioning of absorbed laser energy into vaporization, bubble and shock wave energy, and dissipation through viscosity and condensation. These tools are used for analysing a scattering signal covering 102 oscillation cycles. The bubble was produced by a plasma with 1550 K average temperature and had 36 $\mu$m maximum radius. Predicted bubble wall velocities during expansion agree well with experimental data. Upon first collapse, most energy was stored in the compressed liquid around the bubble and then radiated away acoustically. The collapsed bubble contained more vapour than gas, and its pressure was 13.5 GPa. The pressure of the rebound shock wave initially decayed $\propto r^{-1.8}$, and energy dissipation at the shock front heated liquid near the bubble wall above the superheat limit.
