Abstract:This paper presents a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulator for electromagnetic analysis and design applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is intended to be a complete FDTD model of an MRI system including all RF and low frequency field generating units and electrical models of the patient. The framework has been constructed with the assistance of object-oriented concepts. The detailed design procedure is described and the numerical method has been verified against analytical solutions for simple cases and also applied to real field calculations. The simulated results demonstrated that the proposed FDTD scheme can be used to analyze large-scale computational electromagnetic problems in MRI engineering.

Abstract:This paper presents a parallel-computing FDTD simulator for electromagnetic analysis and design applications in Magnetic Resonance Imaging system. It is intended to be a complete, high-performance FDTD model of an MRI system including all temporal RF and low-frequency field generating units and electrical models of the patient. The developed MRI-dedicated FDTD algorithm is adapted to a parallel computing architecture with the MPI library. Its capabilities are illustrated in two distinct, large-scale field problems. One concerns the interaction of RF-fields with human tissue at high magnitude fields. The other includes the characterization of the temporal eddy currents induced in the cryostat vessel during gradient switching. The presented examples demonstrate the computational efficiency and extended analyses available due to the parallel FDTD framework.

Abstract:This paper presents a three dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) scheme in cylindrical coordinates with an improved algorithm for accommodating the numerical singularity associated with the polar axis. The regularization of this singularity problem is entirely based on Ampere's law. The proposed algorithm has been detailed and verified against a problem with a known solution obtained from a commercial electromagnetic simulation package. The numerical scheme is also illustrated by modeling high-frequency RF field-human body interactions in MRI. The results demonstrate the accuracy and capability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This study extends our recent works on object-oriented Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations into a parallel-computing framework, producing substantially improved performance with respect to computing time efficiency. The simulator is intended to be a complete, high-performance FDTD model of an MRI system including all temporal radio frequency (RF) and low-frequency field generating units and electrical models of the patient. The parallel computational structure has been designed using a Message-Passing Interface (MPI) Library. The implementation of the MRI-dedicated FDTD algorithms within the parallel computing framework is detailed. To improve the simulator performance in a realistic network-computing environment, several software design aspects have been investigated. These include: data transmission with consideration of buffered and synchronous communication, load balancing on the computing network using a weighting mechanism. The power of the optimized FDTD parallel architecture is illustrated by two distinct, large-scale field calculation problems involving the study of the interaction of RF-fields with human tissue (whole-body, male and female) in high held MRI and characterization of the temporal eddy currents induced on the cryostat vessel during gradient switching. The examples demonstrate the improved capabilities of the simulator. in addition, through the parallelization of the FDTD algorithm we are in a position to study various MRI phenomena at much higher spatial resolutions than was previously feasible. Abstract:Given the rising demand in modern industry for high-performance permanent magnet (PM) machines and advanced control strategies, more efficient computation tools are an urgent necessity. To address nonlinear characteristics like magnetic saturation in PM machines, hybrid models (HMs) have seen rapid development in recent years. Among these, the nonlinear Fourier-based and magnetic circuit (MC) HMs offer advantages of high accuracy and clear physical significance. However, both the high-dimensional stiffness matrix in the Fourier model and tedious iteration process in nonlinear MC model contribute to CPU usage issues and unacceptably time consumption. To cope with these issues, the author puts forth a series of efficient techniques aimed at reducing computational burden. These techniques are derived from both individual computations of the two sub-models and iterative calculations between them. They leverage aspects such as PM machine magnetic field distribution, efficient matrix solving algorithms, nonlinear equation convergence algorithms and so on. Furthermore, the author outlines tailored capable techniques corresponding to the distinct characteristics of inner and outer rotor structures, as well as surface-mounted and interior PM topologies. Through finite element modeling and prototype experiments, employing these techniques substantially decreases time consumption while maintaining accuracy.

Abstract:As the inductance of magnetic cores is the most important parameter for their service performance. Four coupling models of EE-type ferrite cores are established to analyze the relationship between surface quality and the inductance of ferrite cores. Besides, 3D FEM simulation of different models is made by ANSOFT MAXWELL software. The results show that the surface quality has a direct influence on the service performance of ferrite devices.

Abstract:Magnetic metamaterials exhibit extraordinary electromagnetic properties and have shown great potential in low-frequency near-field electromagnetic applications. A near-field device or system is consisted of different natural media and low-frequency metamaterials, and it is essential to develop a numerical methodology to compute the transient response of such a device or system. However, most existing works are dedicated to high-frequency metamaterials and wave propagation problems, whereas the study of numerical methodology for low-frequency metamaterials in magnetoquasistatic (MQS) fields is still blank and challenging. In this regard, a time-domain finite-element method (TDFEM) is first derived for MQS field applications of low-frequency metamaterials. The metamaterials are modeled as continuous media and approximated by a nonstandard Lorentz dispersion equation. The formulas to handle dispersive media in near field are derived based on the auxiliary equation method. The proposed method is validated in a 2-D axisymmetric case study by comparing its results with those of frequency-domain computations.
Simulation of 3-D electromagnetic field in the devices for magnetic fluid hyperthermia

Abstract:In order to improve therapeutic effects, the distribution of electromagnetic fields arisen by the magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) treatment system needs to be investigated more explicitly. Three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) models for the prototype of the MFH treatment system were constructed and optimized. The distribution in static and harmonic magnetic fields were calculated and the magnetic intensities were compared when the spans of atmosphere between magnetic poles were 20 to 40 mm. Then magnetic intensity, induction and eddy current loss were also computed when the span was 30 mm. The results agree with the experimental measurements, which proves the effectiveness and feasibility of this method.

Abstract:The advancement in micro and nano-scale technologies demands in depth understanding of magnetic behaviors. For example, as the ever increasing need for high capacity data storage continuously pushes the boundaries of magnetic recording technology to the physical limits, detailed analysis of the magnetic properties becomes necessary. It is expected that finite element micromagnetics can predict the magnetic behavior with high accuracy taking complex microstructure of magnetic materials into account. In practice, however, the tradeoff is speed and accuracy. This paper reviews the numerical methods used in micromagnetic simulations and presents practical examples in the field of nanotechnology and magnetic recording.

Abstract:In this letter, the auxiliary differential equation (ADE) form of the complex-frequency-shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML) is implemented for the single field (SF) weakly conditionally stable (WCS) finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The magnetic field terms in the auxiliary variables of ADE-CFS-PML are eliminated, conforming to the SF formulation. The reflection error and stability of the proposed method is verified with numerical examples. Results show that the proposed method is stable and features low reflection error when the maximum time step is chosen for the SF-WCS-FDTD method. The higher multithread computation efficiency of the proposed method is also demonstrated.
3D finite-difference transient electromagnetic modeling with a whole-space initial field

Abstract:A 3D finite-difference time-domain transient electromagnetic forward-modeling method with a whole-space initial field is proposed to improve forward efficiency and flexibility. The open-source software WFTEM3D is developed based on this method with two language versions: a FORTRAN code and a MATLAB code. First, the scheme calculates the whole-space initial field excited by magnetic dipole sources at an initial time after the current is switched off. Then, the scheme steps Maxwell’s equations in time using a staggered grid and a modified DuFort-Frankel method. Multiple magnetic dipole sources are superimposed to achieve the modeling for large loop configurations. The air is included into the grids and the Dirichlet boundary condition is used on the outer boundaries. The forward-modeling method has three advantages. First, the method can be used to simulate the whole-space model and the half-space model. Second, big mesh growth factors of 1.5–3 are allowed, which significantly improves the computational efficiency and facilitates the simulation of the multiscale model. Third, the approximate initial field can be calculated using a conductivity independent of the model, which facilitates the simulation of the nonflat topography model. These advantages are tested by examples. The model of a conductive brick in a half-space and the model of a complex conductor at a vertical contact are simulated. The run times are 0.48 and 9.72 s, respectively, on an ordinary computer with an Intel Core i7-6700 CPU, and the solutions are consistent with that presented in the literature. Examples of a multiscale model with three conductive bricks, a valley model, and a hill model are simulated, which further verify these advantages.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of complex structure simulation, the local nonuniform griding technique is investigated in the finite difference time domain (FDTD) solver, where the single field (SF) and hybrid implicit explicit (HIE) algorithms have been introduced. Some structures with fine details in one direction are simulated by using the proposed stratagem. Typically, the magnetic field for obtaining the sampled currents and far-field data is selectively updated to save memory and CPU time. Reflection error from the truncating boundary is decreased compared to the conventional FDTD method, as well as the stability is validated. Moreover, the original SF-HIE-FDTD updating procedures is modified to improve multithread computing efficiency. A layered rectangular dielectric resonator antenna and a microstrip bandpass filter models have been simulated. Results are in very good agreement with those from the conventional FDTD solver and from the commercial software, but up to 58.14% computation time is saved. Our proposed method is significant for the simulation of microwave circuit and antenna with fine structure, especially, the use of the nonuniform grid.
Modeling the Magnetic Field of a Micro-Electromagnet in FEMLAB

Abstract:In 2D and 3D,the magnetic flux density from a micro electromagnet used for magnetic bio-separation was simulated with FEMLAB software.Due to the complexity of the structure,a fine meshing of the 3D structure is not possible.In order to minimize the memory consumption by reducing the size of the space domain surrounding the magnetic structure and by using a relatively coarse mesh,the effects of reducing the size of the space domain and using a coarse mesh that it is possible to perform a reference simulation with a large space domain and a fine mesh,and the errors made by the approximations were quantified.3D simulations were carried out with space domain and coarse meshing conditions identical to those in 2D simulations,and it is shown that the approximations in 3D simulations result in an underestimation of the order of 10%.The magnetic structure of 3D simulations can be compared with that of 2D simulations.

Abstract:Micromagnetic simulation is a numerical method to solve the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert (LLG) equation for magnetic dynamics. Most of the mainstream micromagnetic simulation packages, including the object oriented micromagnetic framework and MuMax3, perform simulation in the time domain. Here, utilizing the frequency domain simulation capability of COMSOL Multiphysics, we developed a COMSOL-based micromagnetic simulation module that solves the LLG equation in the frequency domain, which runs much faster and more accurate than time-domain simulations. Frequency-domain simulation is ideal for finding spin wave eigenmodes and the corresponding dispersions. We verify the validity of the module using three examples in the absence of dipolar field, and the inclusion of the dipolar field can be incorporated by combining this module with the alternating current/direct current module within COMSOL.

Abstract:Many natural substances in nature exhibit magnetism, which has a significant impact on human life. However, accurately predicting, analyzing, and manipulating magnetic fields requires the use of precise mathematical simulation techniques. One such method is numerical modeling with element matrices, which is crucial for simulating and analyzing complex physical models. In conventional mesh-based modeling, there is always a residual error, and the accuracy of the solution can be greatly affected by the mesh density. This work proposed a new numerical modeling theory for the field of magnetics, which is based on specially designed points within an element. With this new computational framework, the mesh-dependence feature of the element matrix can be significantly reduced, allowing for more efficient convergence to the theoretical value with minimal differences. This method can handle a wide range of extreme physical conditions in both three-dimensional and two-dimensional scenarios, which are beyond the capabilities of conventional methods, and can provide highly accurate computational solutions. The proposed method is demonstrated through the passive shielding design of a 9.4 T whole-body magnetic resonance imaging superconducting magnet, and the concept design of an extremely weak magnetic field scientific facility with cross-scale geometry was exemplified by the proposed method.

Abstract:The marine magnetotelluric (MMT) method is a significant tool extensively utilized in offshore studies, including the understanding of the Earth's tectonics and hydrocarbon exploration. Conductive anisotropy and non-zero magnetic susceptibility are common phenomena observed in the Earth's subsurface, and MMT forward modeling is the basis of practical inversion. However, numerical modeling that incorporates both conductive anisotropy and magnetic susceptibility has received limited attention. Moreover, both accuracy and efficiency are crucial in developing a 3D MMT modeling algorithm. Therefore, we developed a multi-level parallel MMT forward modeling algorithm that is capable of simultaneously modeling conductive and magnetic arbitrary anisotropic models using the vector finite element method based on the secondary field formula. The algorithm's accuracy was validated through comparisons with previously published results for an arbitrary anisotropic model. The results show that the maximum relative error is below 2%, and the speedup reaches an impressive value of 552.41 when running with 2048 cores. Furthermore, the MMT responses of conductive anisotropy and magnetic susceptibility were comprehensively analyzed by several typical models. Our findings highlight the importance of considering magnetic susceptibility in magnetite-rich regions, particularly as the MMT responses may exhibit opposite responses for anomalies with lower resistivity and higher magnetic susceptibility compared with the surrounding rocks.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid seal(MFS) is one of the most mature applications of MF and is widely used in numerous fields. Magnet is an essential part in MFS, which create magnetic field gradient to held MFs at the sealing stage to resist pressure. We summarize the MFS mechanisms and the formation mechanisms of magnetic field. Here, we provide an comprehensive comparison with the theory analyses and diverse applications of different magnet type in MFS from two categories, permanent magnet and electromagnet. And their respective strengths and weaknesses were analyzed. We find that the electromagnet has an important role in many working conditions. Then we provide an in-depth, comprehensive insight into the applications of MFS with both permanent magnets and electromagnets, such as application to reduce breakaway torque, to re-magnetize permanent magnets without disassembly and to explore the magnetic saturation principle of magnetic materials. At the end of the paper, the present challenges and future prospects in the progress of electromagnets in MFS are also outlined.

Abstract:This paper presents a methodology to program the weak coupling between magnetic and structural vector fields in an electromagnetic device modeled in two dimensions. The magneto-mechanical coupling phenomenon is present in electromagnetic devices where magnetic forces cause displacements in metallic materials. This work proposes a numerical solution to this problem by applying the 2D finite element method to the governing equations of this coupled multiphysics phenomenon. The well-known formulation yields accurate results; however, it is often not properly integrated into a computer program. This manuscript proposes a flexible and intuitive methodology for the implementation of the complex mathematics involved in this phenomenon into a computer program. The computer code receives the input parameters, discretizes the geometry by generating a 2D finite mesh, solves the resulting equations using the finite element method, and finally exports the results of the magnetic ang mechanical fields. The modeling is performed using an open-source platform for programming the finite element method in the programming language Python, and afterwards, the results are compared against a commercial software as validation of the proposed numerical approach. The novel magneto-mechanical coupling methodology is used to solve an engineering application, namely an electromagnetic actuator.

Abstract:In order to overcome the design problems in the magnetic attracting underwater vehicle systems, the magnetic field distribution around the permanent magnet is simulated by ANSYS in this paper. The differences between the magnetic field distributions of the magnetic unit in the air and water are studied and discussed by simulations and experiments. The results show that the magnetic fields have the same distribution around the magnetic unit in the abovementioned environments. Also, the magnetic attraction forces, due to the permanent magnet, on the work pieces with same level of surface smoothness almost maintain a same value in these two different environments.

Abstract:We present a versatile numerical approach to simulating various magnetic phenomena using a level-set method. At the heart of our method lies a novel two-way coupling mechanism between a magnetic field and a magnetizable mechanical system, which is based on the interfacial Helmholtz force drawn from the Minkowski form of the Maxwell stress tensor. We show that a magnetic-mechanical coupling system can be solved as an interfacial problem, both theoretically and computationally. In particular, we employ a Poisson equation with a jump condition across the interface to model the mechanical-to-magnetic interaction and a Helmholtz force on the free surface to model the magnetic-to-mechanical effects. Our computational framework can be easily integrated into a standard Euler fluid solver, enabling both simulation and visualization of a complex magnetic field and its interaction with immersed magnetizable objects in a large domain. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method through an array of magnetic substance simulations that exhibit rich geometric and dynamic characteristics, encompassing ferrofluid, rigid magnetic body, deformable magnetic body, and multi-phase couplings.
