Abstract:The dark-mode effect is a stubborn obstacle for ground-state cooling of multiple degenerate mechanical modes optomechanically coupled to a common cavity-field mode. Here we propose an auxiliary-cavity-mode method for simultaneous ground-state cooling of two degenerate or near-degenerate mechanical modes by breaking the dark mode. We find that the introduction of the auxiliary cavity mode not only breaks the dark-mode effect, but also provides a new cooling channel to extract the thermal excitations stored in the dark mode. Moreover, we study the general physical-coupling configurations for breaking the dark mode in a generalized network-coupled four-mode optomechanical system consisting of two cavity modes and two mechanical modes. We find the analytical dark-mode-breaking condition in this system. This method is general and it can be generalized to break the dark-mode effect and to realize the simultaneous ground-state cooling in a multiple-mechanical-mode optomechanical system. We also demonstrate the physical mechanism behind the dark-mode breaking by studying the breaking of dark-state effect in the N−type four-level atomic system. Tunable optomechanically induced transparency by controlling the dark-mode effect

Abstract:We study tunable optomechanically induced transparency by controlling the dark-mode effect induced by two mechanical modes coupled to a common cavity field. This is realized by introducing a phase-dependent phonon-exchange interaction, which is used to form a loop-coupled configuration. Combining this phase-dependent coupling with the optomechanical interactions, the dark-mode effect can be controlled by the quantum interference effect. In particular, the dark-mode effect in this two-mechanical-mode optomechanical system can lead to a double-amplified optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) window and a higher efficiency of the second-order sideband in comparison with the standard optomechanical system. This is because the effective mechanical decay rate related to the linewidth of the OMIT window becomes a twofold increase in the weak-coupling limit. When the dark-mode effect is broken, controllable double transparency windows appear and the second-order sideband, as well as the light delay or advance, is significantly enhanced. For an N-mechanical-mode optomechanical system, we find that in the presence of the dark-mode effect, the amplification multiple of the linewidth of the OMIT window is nearly proportional to the number of mechanical modes, and that the OMIT with a single window becomes the one with N tunable windows by breaking the dark-mode effect. The study will be useful in optical information storage within a large-frequency bandwidth and multichannel optical communication based on optomechanical systems.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to enhance quantum entanglement in an optomechanical system consisting of two mechanically coupled mechanical resonators, which are driven by a common electromagnetic field. Each mechanical resonator is linearly and quadratically coupled to the electromagnetic field. Moreover, the mechanical coupling between the resonators is modulated through a given phase that allows interference control in our structure. By tuning this phase, our system exhibits interference like-structure which is reminiscent of bright and dark mode features. The breaking of the dark mode via the phase adjustment leads to an entanglement generation, which is greatly enhanced through the quadratic coupling. Furthermore, the generated entanglement is robust enough against thermal noise and this resilience is improved when the quadratic coupling is accounted. Our work provides a way to enhance quantum entanglement via quadratic coupling which is assisted by interference control. Such quantum resources can be useful for quantum information processing, quantum computing, and other numerous quantum tasks.

Macroscopic Quantum Entanglement in Modulated Optomechanics

Abstract:Quantum entanglement in mechanical systems is not only a key signature of macroscopic quantum effects but has wide applications in quantum technologies. Here we propose an effective approach for creating strong steady-state entanglement between two directly coupled mechanical oscillators (or a mechanical oscillator and a microwave resonator) in a modulated optomechanical system. The entanglement is achieved by combining the processes of a cavity cooling and the two-mode parametric interaction, which can surpass the bound on the maximal stationary entanglement from the two-mode parametric interaction. In principle, our proposal allows one to cool the system from an initial thermal state to an entangled state with high purity by a monochromatic driving laser. Also, the obtained entangled state can be used to implement the continuous-variable teleportation with high fidelity. Moreover, our proposal is robust against the thermal fluctuations of the mechanical modes under the condition of strong optical pumping.

Abstract:We consider a hybrid system consisting of a cavity optomechanical device with nonlinear quadratic radiation pressure coupled to an atomic ensemble. By considering the collective excitation, we show that this system supports nontrivial, nonlinear dark states. The coupling strength can be tuned via the lasers that ensure the population transfer adiabatically between the mechanical modes and the collective atomic excitations in a controlled way. In addition, we show how to detect the dark-state resonance by calculating the single-photon spectrum of the output fields and the transmission of the probe beam based on two-phonon optomechanically induced transparency. Possible application and extension of the dark states are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we study a system consisting of two nearly degenerate mechanical modes that couple to a single mode of an optical cavity. We show that this coupling leads to nearly complete (99.5%) hybridization of the two mechanical modes into a bright mode that experiences strong optomechanical interactions and a dark mode that experiences almost no optomechanical interactions. We use this hybridization to transfer energy between the mechanical modes with 40% efficiency.

Abstract:Simultaneous ground-state cooling of multiple degenerate mechanical modes is a tough issue in optomechanical system due to the existence of the dark mode effect. Here we propose a universal and scalable method to break the dark mode effect of two degenerate mechanical modes by introducing the cross-Kerr (CK) nonlinearity. At most four stable steady states can be achieved in our scheme in the presence of the CK effect, different from the bistable behavior of the standard optomechanical system. Under the constant input laser power, the effective detuning and mechanical resonant frequency can be modulated by the CK nonlinearity, which results in an optimal CK coupling strength for cooling. Similarly, there will be an optimal input laser power for cooling when the CK coupling strength stays fixed. Our scheme can be extended to break the dark mode effect of multiple degenerate mechanical modes by introducing more than one CK effects. To fulfill the requirement of the simultaneous ground-state cooling of N multiple degenerate mechanical modes N-1 CK effects with different strengths are needed. Our proposal provides new insights in dark mode control and might pave the way to manipulating of multiple quantum states in macroscopic system.

Abstract:We propose a general and experimentally feasible approach to realize simultaneous ground-state cooling of arbitrary number of near-degenerate, or even fully degenerate mechanical modes, overcoming the limit imposed by the formation of mechanical dark modes. Multiple optical modes are employed to provide different dissipation channels that prevent complete destructive interference of the cooling pathway, and thus eliminating the dark modes. The cooling rate and limit are explicitly specified, in which the distinguishability of the optical modes to the mechanical modes is found to be critical for an efficient cooling process. In a realistic multi-mode optomechanical system, ground-state cooling of all mechanical modes is demonstrated by sequentially introducing optical drives, proving the feasibility and scalability of the proposed scheme. The work may provide new insights in preparing and manipulating multiple quantum states in macroscopic systems.

Abstract:We propose a scheme that exploits the effect of normal-mode splitting in a three-mode optomechanical system (OMS) to manipulate phonons in a single-excitation level. The three normal modes of the OMS are formed by coupling two mechanical modes to a cavity mode, which is driven by a strong red-detuned pump field via radiation pressure. It is shown that the Landau-Zener dynamics of the three-normal-mode configuration is versatile for quantum information engineering. Explicitly, we show that it is feasible to transfer a single phonon between two mechanical modes with distinct frequencies, and an entangled W state among the three modes can be prepared. The effect of damping is analyzed by numerical simulation, which confirms the validity of our proposal. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Dark state as a consequence of interference between different quantum states has great importance in the fields of chip-scale atomic clock and quantum information. For the Λ-type three-level system, this dark state is generally regarded as being dissipation-free because it is a superposition of two lowest states without dipole transition between them. However, previous studies are based on the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) by neglecting the counter-rotating terms in the system-environment interaction. In this work, we study non-Markovian quantum dynamics of the dark state in a Λ-type three-level system coupled to two bosonic baths and reveal the effect of counter-rotating terms on the dark state. In contrast to the dark state within the RWA, leakage of the dark state occurs even at zero temperature, as a result of these counter-rotating terms. Also, we present a method to restore the quantum coherence of the dark state by applying a leakage elimination operator to the system.

Abstract:In an optomechanical system, we experimentally engineer the optical density of state to reduce or broaden the effective linewidth of the optical mode by introducing an ancillary mechanical mode, which has a large decay rate, i.e., stimulated backward Brillouin scattering. Based on this dissipation engineering, we could engineer the optical mode linewidth by one order of magnitude. In addition, we can either enhance or suppress the optomechanical cooling and amplification of the target mechanical oscillations. Our scheme demonstrates the cascaded photon-phonon coupling to control the mechanical interactions, and also presents a novel approach for engineering coherent light-matter interaction in hybrid systems, which consist of different types of nonlinear interactions and multiple modes, and promote the performance of quantum devices. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.163604 © 2021 American Physical Society

Tunable Optical Nonreciprocity and a Phonon-Photon Router in an Optomechanical System with Coupled Mechanical and Optical Modes

Abstract:We propose a multimode optomechanical system to realize tunable optical nonreciprocity that has the prospect of making an optical diode for information technology. The proposed model consists of two subsystems, each of which contains two optical cavities, injected with a classical field and a quantum signal via a 50: 50 beam splitter, and a mechanical oscillator, coupled to both cavities via optomechanical coupling. Meanwhile two cavities and an oscillator in a subsystem are respectively coupled to their corresponding cavities and an oscillator in the other subsystem. Our scheme yields nonreciprocal effects at different frequencies with opposite directions, but each effective linear optomechanical coupling can be controlled by an independent classical one-frequency pump. With this setup one is able to apply quantum states with large fluctuations, which extends the scope of applicable quantum states, and exploit the independence of paths. Moreover, the optimal frequencies for nonreciprocal effects can be controlled by adjusting the relevant parameters. We also exhibit the path switching of two directions, from a mechanical input to two optical output channels, via tuning the signal frequency. In experiment, the considered scheme can be tuned to reach small damping rates of the oscillators relative to those of the cavities, which is more practical and requires less power than in previous schemes.

Abstract:We report an experimental scheme of three-channel all-optical switching based on the conversion between single and double dark states in an atom-ring-cavity system driven by a coherent standing-wave coupling field. By turning on and off the counter-propagating part of the coupling field, the switching for the probe field at three different frequencies is simultaneously achieved. We give a theoretical interpretation to the experimental results via the intracavity susceptibility for thermal atoms at different velocities. Controllable generation of mechanical quadrature squeezing via dark-mode engineering in cavity optomechanics

Abstract:Quantum squeezing is an important resource in modern quantum technologies, such as quantum precision measurement and continuous-variable quantum information processing. The generation of squeezed states of mechanical modes is a significant task in cavity optomechanics. Motivated by recent interest in multimode optomechanics, it becomes an interesting topic to create quadrature squeezing in multiple mechanical resonators. However, in the multiple-degenerate-mechanical-mode optomechanical systems, the dark-mode effect strongly suppresses the quantum effects in mechanical modes. Here we study the generation of mechanical squeezing in a two-mechanical-mode optomechanical system by breaking the dark-mode effect with the synthetic-gauge-field method. We find that when the mechanical modes work at a finite temperature, the mechanical squeezing is weak or even disappeared due to the dark-mode effect, while the strong mechanical squeezing can be generated once the dark-mode effect is broken. In particular, the thermal-phonon-occupation tolerance of the mechanical squeezing is approximately three orders of magnitude larger than that without breaking the dark-mode effect. We also generalize this method to break the dark modes and to create the mechanical squeezing in a multiple-mechanical-mode optomechanical system. Our results describe a general physical mechanism and pave the way towards the generation of noise-resistant quantum resources.

Abstract:Some optomechanical systems can be transparent to a probe field when a strong driving field is applied. These systems can provide an optomechanical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We study the transmission of a probe field through a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of a cavity and a mechanical resonator with a two-level system (qubit). The qubit might be an intrinsic defect inside the mechanical resonator, a superconducting artificial atom, or another two-level system. The mechanical resonator is coupled to the cavity field via radiation pressure and to the qubit via the Jaynes-Cummings interaction. We find that the dressed two-level system and mechanical phonon can form two sets of three-level systems. Thus, there are two transparency windows in the discussed system. We interpret this effect as an optomechanical analog of two-color EIT (or double EIT). We demonstrate how to switch between one and two EIT windows by changing the transition frequency of the qubit. We show that the absorption and dispersion of the system are mainly affected by the qubit-phonon coupling strength and the transition frequency of the qubit.

Abstract:Quantum state transfer between cavities is crucial for quantum information processing and quantum computation in optomechanical systems. Here, we present the first scheme for the transitionless intra-cavity quantum state transfer based on transitionless quantum driving (TQD) algorithm in optomechanical systems. We also present a physically feasible system for the TQD process based on largely detuned optomechanical cavity. With the Gaussian time-dependence coupling strengths, our scheme can achieve the perfect quantum state transfer with no undesired transition and reduce the dependence of accurately controlling evolution time and interval of coupling strengths. Our computational results show that the TQD process can be accomplished with no need of the mechanical oscillator in its ground state and is also robust to the mechanical dissipation.

Abstract:We study the quantum dynamics of an optomechanical setup comprising two optical modes and one mechanical mode. We show that the same system can undergo a Dicke-Hepp-Lieb superradiant type phase transition. We found that the coupling between the momentum quadratures of the two optical fields give rise to a new critical point. We show that selective energy exchange between any two modes is possible by coherent control of the coupling parameters. In addition we also demonstrate the occurrence of Normal Mode Splitting (NMS) in the mechanical displacement spectrum.
