Abstract:We demonstrate a enhancement of high harmonic generation in CO2 by using two color laser pulses with two foci. The intensity of harmonic H23 increased by a factor of 65 compared to a single focus.

Abstract:High harmonic generation driven by two-color laser f ield in CO2 molecules were investigated experimentally. The optimized intensity of the 24th harmonic was obtained by changing filling gas pressure. In additional, harmonic output was improved by moving the laser focus with respect to the gas cell. There are two maximum values in two regions. The result is ascribed to different phase matching in the gas cell, favoring long and short electron trajectories during high harmonic generation respectively. The experiment results indicate that molecular high harmonic generated in two-color field may be a promising multi-wavelength tunable coherent XUV source.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers (FELs) are fourth-generation light sources that deliver extremely high intensity, ultrashort light pulses over a broad wavelength range from far-infrared to hard x ray. FELs based on the self-amplified spontaneous emission principle have been successfully operated with ultrahigh brightness and a broad wavelengths tuning range with good transverse coherence but poor temporal coherence. In contrast, the laser-seeded FELs have provided full coherence but at selected central wavelengths, usually the harmonics of the laser seeds, with relatively narrower tuning range. We report the experimental demonstration of a high-gain harmonic-generation (HGHG) FEL that is continuously tunable over a wide range using the combination of optical parametrical amplification, variable-gap undulator, and harmonic selection, where the temporal coherence is preserved as confirmed with the Michelson interferometry. In order to achieve higher photon energies, the first try of cascaded HGHG with a fresh-bunch technique is also made at the Shanghai Deep Ultraviolet Free-electron Laser test facility.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the high-order harmonic generation from a one-dimensional model of the helium ion in a two-color laser field synthesized by adding a relatively weak subharmonic laser pulse to a 800-nm laser pulse. The initial states of the helium ion are prepared as the ground state and a coherent superposition state, respectively. Numerical results show evident advantages of using the coherent superposition state to enhance the harmonic generation efficiency. When the phase of the subharmonic pulse is properly shifted with respect to the fundamental pulse, both an ultrabroad xuv supercontinuum spectrum and enhancement of high-order harmonic emission can be observed. By superposing a properly selected range of the harmonic spectrum, the possibility of generating intense pulses that can be as short as 45 as is demonstrated.

Abstract:We apply the strong-field Lewenstein model to demonstrate the high-order harmonic generation of CO2 with three vibrational modes (balance vibration, bending vibration, and stretching vibration) driven by an intense laser field. The results show that the intensity of harmonic spectra is sensitive to molecular vibrational modes, and the high harmonic efficiency with stretching vibrational mode is the strongest. The underlying physical mechanism of the harmonic emission can be well explained by the corresponding ionization yield and the time-frequency analysis. Finally, we demonstrate the attosecond pulse generation with different vibrational modes and an isolated attosecond pulse with a duration of about 112 as is generated.

Abstract:By using the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we theoretically explored the high-order harmonic generation process under the interaction of high-intensity two-color ultrashort driving laser pulses with atoms. The symmetry of the electric field of the laser pulse will be broken. The producing electric field was controlled at the subcycle level by an IR laser and its second harmonic, which has the unique characteristic that two sequential half-cycles become distinct, rather than merely opposite in sign. Compared with the case of the atom in the fundamental laser pulse, the harmonic efficiency showed an increase of 1∼2 orders of magnitude at specific harmonic order with this combined pulse action. Through the theoretical analysis with the “three-step model”, it was demonstrated that the enhancement of the harmonic intensity is due to the fast ionization of electrons at the ionization moment and the short time from ionization to recombination of ionized electrons. In addition, effects of the peak field amplitude ratio, the full width at half maximum, the phase delay of the two-color pulses, the laser intensity and ionization probability on the harmonic efficiency enhancement were also investigated.

Abstract:Synthesis of multi-color laser pulses has been developed as a promising way to improve low conversion efficiency of high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Here we systematically study the effect of laser focus in a two-color waveform on generation of macroscopic HHG in soft x-rays. We find that the dependence of HHG yields on laser focus at low or high gas pressure is sensitive to the characteristics of single-atom harmonic response, in which “short”- or “long”-trajectory emissions can be selectively controlled by changing the waveform of two-color synthesized laser pulse. We uncover the phase-matching mechanism of HHG in the gas medium by examining the propagation of the two-color waveform and the evolution of time-frequency emissions of high-harmonic field. We further reveal that the nonlinear effects, such as geometric phase, atomic dispersion, and plasma defocusing, are responsible for modification of two-color waveform upon propagation. This work can be used to find better macroscopic conditions for generating soft x-ray HHG by employing two-color optimized waveforms.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the electron dynamics of the high-order harmonics generation process by combining a near-infrared 800 nm driving pulse with a mid-infrared 2000 nm control field. We also investigate the emission time of harmonics using time-frequency analysis to illustrate the physical mechanisms of high-order harmonic generation. We calculate the ionization rate using the Ammosov-Delone-Krainov model and interpret the variations in harmonic intensity for different control field strengths and delays. We find that the width of the harmonic plateau can be extended when the control electric field is added, and a supercontinuum from 198 to 435 eV is generated, from which an isolated 61-as pulse can be directly obtained.

Abstract:In the past three decades, high-order harmonic generation (HHG) has attracted much attention due to its promising applications on creating table-top coherent extreme-ultraviolet (EUV/XUV) or X-ray sources, synthesizing attosecond pulses, probing electron dynamics and making ”molecular movies”, etc. We review our recent experimental and theoretical progresses in HHG driven by two-color laser fields, including broadening of XUV supercontinuum, generation of isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs), selection of long or short quantum trajectories, enhancement of HHG yield, creation of wavelength-tunable, bandwidth-controlled XUV emission, etc.

Abstract:We have experimentally studied the high order harmonic generation (HHG) in CO molecules by two femtosecond laser pulses using a pump-probe technique. The delay time between two pulses is longer than the pulse duration, and the pump intensity is about 6.2 x 10(14) W/cm(2). It is found that the HHG signal is independent of the time delay in the picosecond region, but it is dependent on the distance between the centres, of focuses of the two beams. The phase modulation induced by the pump pulse is regarded to be responsible for this.

Abstract:We demonstrate multiwavelength amplified harmonic emissions in carbon dioxide gas driven by intense mid-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. The simultaneous amplified emissions at 315, 326, 337 and 351 nm from the A(2)Pi(u)-X-2 Pi(g) transition of CO2+ are found to have a high gain coefficient of similar to 4.43 cm(-1) with the polarizations parallel to that of the pump laser. This is ascribed to the seeding effect by the third harmonic of pump laser. The coherence property of the amplified harmonic emissions is further evidenced by its diffraction pattern. Abstract:We present the most prominent features in two-colour coherent control of high-order harmonic generation using a strongly driven two-level atom model, which are known to generate high harmonics as well as hyper-Raman lines with a plateau and a cut-off. Furthermore, for one laser field case, we find, when the hyper-Raman lines are located at the position of the high harmonics, that the high harmonics are strongly enhanced due to the interference effect between the high harmonics and the hyper-Raman lines. Within these conditions, by combining the laser field with another much weaker laser field, we show plentiful and strong high harmonics in the light spectrum of the driven atomic system.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of H-2(+) molecule in the counter-rotating two-color circularly polarized laser pulse by numerically solving the two-dimensional (2D) time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE). The results show that the even harmonics are suppressed with the fundamental laser wavelength 800 nm for the ratio of the second laser frequency and the fundamental laser frequency 3 or 5. In order to investigate the contributions of the HHG from two nuclei, the HHG is separated into two parts, which is originated from nucleus 1 and nucleus 2. The underlying physical mechanism of enhancing and suppressing high-order harmonic generation is illustrated by the interference effect of the HHG spectra originating from two nuclei. Meanwhile, the difference of the HHG spectra is investigated with the fundamental laser wavelength 1600 nm and 2400 nm.

Abstract:The growing requirements of pump-probe techniques and nonlinear optics experiments greatly promote the studies of two-color free-electron lasers (FELs). We propose a new method to generate coherent two-color pulses in a high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) FEL. In this scheme, an initial tilted electron beam is sent though the modulator and dispersive section of an HGHG FEL to generate the bunching at harmonics of the seed laser. Then a transverse gradient undulator (TGU) is adopted as the radiator and in such radiator, only two separated fractions of the tilted beam will resonate at two adjacent harmonics of the seed laser and are enabled to emit the coherent two-color pulses simultaneously. The time separation between the two pulses are on the order of hundreds of femtoseconds, and can be precisely controlled by varying the tilted amplitude of the electron beam and/or the transverse gradient of the TGU radiator. Numerical simulations confirm the validity and feasibility of this scheme in the extreme ultraviolet waveband.

Abstract:The high-order harmonic generation process of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ in a co-rotating two-color circularly polarized laser pulse was investigated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. Compared with the target of the atom, the harmonic intensity of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ is remarkably enhanced. Moreover, the harmonic intensity of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ approaches its maximum when the electric field amplitude ratio of the fundamental frequency and the second one is approximately 1:2.3. By analyzing the evolution of the time-dependent wave packets, the enhancement of harmonic intensity may be attributed to an increase in the probability of the ionized electron recolliding with the parent ion. In addition, the dependence of harmonic intensity on the internuclear distance and the alignment angle of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ is explored. We found that the ellipticity of the particular harmonic order changes with the molecular alignment angle, which provides a chance to generate an extreme ultraviolet coherent light pulse with controllable polarization.

Abstract:We investigate high-order harmonic generation in H2+ by using two sequential laser pulses, which consist of a 800-nm pump pulse and a time-delayed 1600-nm probe pulse. Based on the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we demonstrate that the harmonic cutoff in our two-pulse scheme is significantly extended compared to that in the 1600-nm probe pulse alone. Meanwhile, the harmonic efficiency is enhanced by 2-3 orders of magnitude due to charge-resonance-enhanced ionization steered by the 800-nm pump pulse. By using a probe pulse with longer wavelength, our scheme can be used for efficient high harmonic generation in the water window region. In addition, the influence of the intensity of the pump pulse and the relative time delay of the two laser pulses on the harmonic generation are also investigated.

Abstract:Abstract High harmonic generation (HHG) by two-color counter-rotating relativistic laser pulses with arbitrary frequency ratio is investigated through particle-in-cell simulations. It is shown that the dichromatic laser driver at various frequency ratios can effectively produce high-order harmonics with different spectral features. A general selection rule of this extended scheme can be obtained and the corresponding harmonic helicity can be identified through a simple analytical model based on a relativistic oscillating mirror. Thus, the results in this paper may offer new opportunities for arbitrary spectral control of generated harmonics, which is of significance for diverse potential applications in practice.

Abstract:We have studied the high-order harmonic generated by two coherent pulses in argon gas produced by a gas jet. A loop in the relationship of the harmonic intensity versus the absolute values of relative phase difference was observed for non-collinear arrangement. Compared with the collinear arrangement, increase of 10 times of the conversion efficiency for 17th-order harmonic generation at an appropriate relative phase difference was obtained. The calculation of the intensity and phase for the laser field near the focus gives a simple reason for these phenomena.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in helium using a two-color laser field synthesized by an intense 25-fs laser pulse at 800 nm and a relatively weak similar to 43-fs laser pulse at 1400 nm. When the polarization between the two pulses is arranged at an angle of similar to 73 degrees, supercontinuum spectra are dramatically broadened to 180 eV, which is sufficient to support an isolated similar to 73-as pulse without any phase compensation. The physical mechanisms behind the phenomenon are well explained in terms of quantum and classical analyses. Furthermore, in the long-pulse regime, this method of extending the supercontinuum spectrum shows the significant advantage over previous two-color HHG schemes.
