Abstract:Fiber-optic code division multiple access (FO-CDMA) system configuration is introduced. The device losses of active fiber connector, optical encoder/decoder, star coupler, transmission media, power penalty induced by fiber dispersion and the chirp effect of laser source are analyzed. Theoretical analysis of system bit error rate (BER) is achieved. Numerical results show that, dispersion power penalty makes system BER decline. The chirp effect of laser source can compensate for the dispersion power penalty for short transmission distance. For a FO-CDMA system with 20 active users, optical orthogonal code with weight 4 is users' address codes, and the distance between transmitter and receiver is 30 km, if BER is 10 -9 , then the transmitted power requires 4.4 dBm for normal single mode fiber (SMF) and 0.7 dBm for dispersion shift fiber (DSF). The system total loss is 44.9 dB for normal SMF and 41.2 dB for DSF.

Abstract:In the high-speed optical-fiber communication system,chromatic dispersion compensation is a necessary way to improve signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and the performance of the system.In this paper,we proposed a practical method for 3.2 Tbit/s(40 Gbit/s 40 Gbit/s/channel×80 channel) transmission system.It can be achieved by combining two DCFs in the DCF module(one with high and one with a low RDS) and all distributed Raman amplification.The primary simulation and the effective result were obtained.This is valuable and referable for the realization of the high-speed optical-fiber communication system.

Abstract:The capacity of single-mode fiber links with direct-modulation/direct-detection is limited by the fiber dispersion and laser chirp. which lead to frequency selective fading at the receiver. In such transmission channels, the capacity can be improved by adaptively modulated optical OFDM. In this paper, we discuss the capacity limits of such links using adaptively modulated optical OFDM both in theory and experiment.

Abstract:With the continuous enhancement of transmission speed in fiber-optic communication systems, the measurement of chromatic dispersion in fibers increasingly becomes a focus of attention. This paper mainly introduces three of the most important approaches, which are utilized to take accurate measurements of chromatic dispersion, from the aspects of principle, measurement setup, applicable field, advantages and disadvantages. These approaches include pulse delay method, phase-shift method and interferometric method. The pulse delay method is not accurate enough, so it is barely used now. Accurate measurements of chromatic dispersion can be taken using phase-shift method; however, the measurement cost is very high due to costly instruments involved. The interferometric method can meet the needs of accuracy to a certain extent and the temporal resolution can be better than 1ps. Also this method doesn't require costly instruments, so it is widely used at present.

Abstract:An experimental demonstration of an all-optical sampling orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AOS-OFDM) transmission system with inline chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation is carried out to test the nonlinear influence. With five subcarriers non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulated, the total bit rate is 50 Gb/s without polarization multiplexing. The receiver end is highly simplified with direct detection using optical Fourier transform filter. After transmission in 160-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link with 130-ps/nm residual CD, an optimum input optical power for the system performance is achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of single-mode fiber (SMF) dispersion and pulse linear chirp on direct-detection optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) systems is analyzed. In the analysis, optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) are employed as address sequence codes. Avalanche photodiode (APD) is selected as the system receiver. The effect of APD shot noise, bulk dark current, surface leakage current, thermal noise current and multiuser access interference (MAI) is considered. The loss of system devices is omitted. The system performance is evaluated under the assumption of optical signal power, code length and code weight are constant. The numerical results show that, if the effect of SMF dispersion is considered, the system performance, i.e., bit error rate (BER) is degradation. With pulse width decreasing and transmission distance increasing, the system performance becomes aggravation. Also, the pulse linear chirp has an important effect on the system BER performance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated Chromatic Dispersion (CD) robust Delta-Sigma Modulation (DSM) for high-order QAM mobile fronthaul. By using Duobinary (DB) encoding technology, the anti-dispersion ability of the DSM signal is effectively enhanced. At the same time, the DB coding technology can compress the signal bandwidth to a certain extent, thereby further improving the spectral efficiency of the digital mobile fronthaul based on the DSM technology. Through the joint coding scheme of DB and DSM, we successfully realized the 30 km fiber transmission of 30G baud DB-DSM signal in the C-band intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) link. Compared with the conventional NRZ-DSM scheme, the DB-DSM scheme shows better receiver sensitivity and can support the transmission of larger bandwidth signals.

Abstract:A cost-effective technique for in-service chromatic dispersion monitoring in a 40-Gb/s optical communication system is proposed. Microwave devices are adopted to detect the electrical power of a specific frequency band. A simplified theoretical model is proposed and discussed focusing on the relationship between electrical power and chromatic dispersion at different frequency bands. The dynamic monitoring of chromatic dispersion is achievedusing devices such as PIN detector, microwave amplifier, narrow-band microwave filter, and electrical power detector. The maximum detectable chromatic dispersion is 130 ps/nm and a resolution of 5.2 ps/nm/dB has been achieved in the frequency band centered at 12 GHz.

Abstract:We propose a diverse vestigial-sideband-filtering feed forward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer (DVSB-FFE-DFE), which is capable of compensating residual chromatic dispersion (CD) as well as mitigating fiber nonlinearity in on-off keying (OOK) systems. In DVSBFFE-DFE, the upper and the lower VSB filtered signals are jointly equalized with FFE followed by DFE. Simulation results show that in a 42.7 Gbit/s nonreturn-to-zero OOK system, DVSB-FFE-DFE can effectively mitigate the required optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty induced by residual CD and fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:A novel method for accurately measuring chromatic dispersion of optical fibers is proposed based on the use of chirped intensity-modulated signals. Unlike the conventional method, the proposed method utilizes the configurable transfer function of optical fibers caused by the residual chirp of intensity modulation, which not only eliminates the chirp error but also improves the measurement range through adjusting the chirp parameter of the intensity modulator. Our method is applicable for measuring both the magnitude and sign of chromatic dispersion of optical fibers or other dispersive devices at different operating wavelengths by using a vector network analyzer.

Abstract:A dynamic chromatic dispersion (CD) compensating technique for a 40 Gb/s single-channeled optical fiber communication system is demonstrated. The tunable dispersion compensator is composed of 2 × 2 optical switches, dispersion compensating fiber etc. For controlling the tunable dispersion compensator, a feedback signal is obtained by detecting the narrow band electrical power centered at 12 GHz, and the electrical power increases with the decrease of the accumulated chromatic dispersion. In experiment, the maximal response time of the system is 0.7 s. The compensating range and precision reach 81.55 ps/nm and 5.28 ps/nm respectively which can be further improved by adding the number of optical switches and reducing the length of dispersion compensating fiber. Experiments indicated that the dynamic dispersion compensating system can significantly improve the performance of 40 Gb/s optical communication systems according to the eye diagram before and after dispersion compensating.

Abstract:Recently, single-side-band (SSB) modulation direct detection (DD) based optical transmission systems have attracted great interest due to their capability of electronic chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation. In this paper, we investigate the digital chromatic dispersion pre-management for optical SSB signals which are generated by radio frequency (RF) tone based on I/Q modulator and optical carrier based dual-drive Mach–Zehnder modulator (DDMZM) with DD at the C-band via numerical simulations. The impact of CD, self-phase modulation (SPM) and phase-to-amplitude noise on such a SSB DD optical transmission system with I/Q modulator based virtual carrier assisted, and the DDMZM based optical carrier are investigated. The simulation results have successfully demonstrated the transmission of a 224-Gb/s Nyquist 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal over 75-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with bit error rate (BER) less than 3.8 × 10−3 in a SSB-DD system by using digital CD pre-management. It is shown that the SPM induced impairment can be optically mitigated by the residual positive CD of the SSMF link.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion and nonlinear impairments pose challenges in high-capacity optical transmission systems, leading to signal distortions, channel interference and diminished the transmission performances. This paper explores the utilization of dispersion compensating fibers (DCF) using different schemes to mitigate the dispersion that accumulates along the length of a fiber in a 16 × 10 Gbps high-capacity long haul WDM system over a range of 500 km. When different wavelengths of light pulses are transmitted through an optical fiber, they experience varying speeds due to the refractive index's wavelength dependency. As a result, the light pulses become temporally spread out as they travel through the fiber, and this dispersion persists throughout the fiber's length. Considering non-linear effects such as self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM), this paper analyze and compare the three compensation schemes of DCF in a 16 channel WDM system. Moreover the impact of non-linearities based on fiber length are also analyzed and compared. The results are evaluated by comparing metrics such as Q -factor, bit error rate (BER) and eye height. The analysis concludes that the symmetrical compensation scheme of DCF outperforms the pre- and post-compensation scheme. This finding suggests that the symmetrical compensation method offers a promising solution for high-capacity access networks, providing high spectral efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and improved flexibility.

Abstract:A remnant chromatic dispersion monitoring method based on spectral shift of a semiconductor optical amplifier is proposed for a high speed optical communication system with carrier suppressed return to zero format and single-channel speed of 40 Gbit/s. The monitoring performance can be optimized by carefully selecting the bandwidth and center wavelength of the optical filter. The dynamical monitoring range is ±60 ps/nm and the monitoring precision is about 5 ps/nm. This method is suitable for application in dynamical chromatic dispersion compensation of high speed optical communication systems.

Abstract:Dispersive optics quantum key distribution (DO-QKD) based on energy-time entangled photon pairs is an important QKD scheme. In DO-QKD, the arrival time of photons is used in key generation and security analysis, which would be greatly affected by fiber dispersion. In this work, we established a theoretical model of the entanglement-based DO-QKD system, considering the protocol, physical processes (such as fiber transmission and single-photon detection), and the analysis of security tests. Based on this theoretical model, we investigate the influence of chromatic dispersion introduced by transmission fibers on the performance of DO-QKD. By analyzing the benefits and costs of dispersion compensation, the system performance under G.652 and G.655 optical fibers are shown, respectively. The results show that dispersion compensation is unnecessary for DO-QKD systems in campus networks and even metro networks. Whereas, it is still required in DO-QKD systems with longer fiber transmission distances.

Abstract:A digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) system has been proposed as a possible solution for large capacity and long-distance coherent optical transmissions due to its high tolerances for chromatic dispersion (CD), equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) and fiber nonlinearity. In a DSCM receiver, for subcarrier-demultiplex to occur properly, frequency offset estimation (FOE) must be implemented before demultiplexing. It is beneficial to decrease complexity and EEPN by compensating CD on each subcarrier. Therefore, a high CD tolerance is indispensable for the FOE algorithm in a DSCM receiver. However, the mainstream blind FOE algorithms for single-carrier systems, such as the 4th power fast Fourier transform algorithm, could not work for DSCM systems. To deal with this challenge, a pilot tone-based FOE algorithm with high CD tolerance is proposed and verified using simulations and offline experiments. The final estimation accuracy of about 10 MHz of the proposed two-stage FOE is achieved at low computational complexity. Simulations and offline experiments show that DSCM systems with the proposed algorithm have a 0.5~1 dB Q-factor improvement over Nyquist single-carrier systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated the residual chromatic dispersion (CD) monitoring of 100-Gbit/s carrier suppress return-to-zero differential quadrature phase shift keying (CS-RZ DQPSK) signals by evaluating the asymmetry ratio of delay tap asynchronous sampling. This scheme can easily differentiate the positive and negative residual CD of the fiber link. The resolution of this scheme is better than 8 ps/nm and the measurable range is around +/- 24 ps/nm for 100 Gbit/s CS-RZ DQPSK signals. We can also simultaneously realize both signed CD monitoring and demodulation of CS-RZ DQPSK signal based on only one demodulator.

Abstract:We propose a dispersion flattened fiber (DFF) front-haul transmission system with high bitrate, polarization multiplexing (PM) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal at low input optical power. The modulation format of the system is PM-16QAM, and the bitrate is 256 Gbit/s. The transmission characteristics over DFF link system are experimentally studied, which are compared with those over non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF) link and standard single mode fiber (SSMF) link. The experimental results show that the error vector magnitude (EVM) of 256 Gbit/s and PM-16QAM signal over 25 km DFF link is 0.75% better than that over 25 km NZDSF link at least, and the bit error rate (BER) and Q-factor are much better than those of NZDSF. Their EVM and BER are both decreased with the increase of input optical power, and the Q-factor is increased. Those characteristics over 25 km SSMF are the worst at the same case. The larger the dispersion is, the more the constellation points are deviated from their respective centers and the worse the constellation characteristics are. The greater the attenuation of the DFF is, the smaller the input power of the DFF is, the more the constellation points are deviated from their centers and the worse the constellation characteristics are. This study provides a new idea and experimental support for long span front-haul propagation in mobile communication.
