Abstract:It has been well recognized that highly variable wind generating capacity behaves considerably different from conventional generation sources. There is still, however, a need to profoundly understand the impact of wind power intermittency on the overall system reliability. A system well-being analysis is utilized in this paper to effectively capture both adequacy and security aspects of a power system containing large amounts of wind power generation. A sequential Monte Carlo simulation technique was used in the study as it has ability to accurately incorporate the chronology of intermittent wind generation behavior and to depict the system well-being index probability distributions in addition to the expected values. The study results are illustrated by considering the replacement of a conventional generating unit by wind power generation in the IEEE-RTS.
