Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing technology is expected as one of the prospective candidates for sustaining the further increment of data-transmission capacity in the optical communication systems. Advanced multiplexing technology of combining OAM-based mode division multiplexing (MDM) in the multicore fiber (MCF) with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can further improve the transmission rate and spectrum efficiency in the communication systems. In this paper, a multi-ring-air-core fiber (MRACF) supporting thousands of OAM modes is designed and analyzed. The tradeoffs between ring numberdensity and their corresponding system performance parameters in this fiber are systematically investigated. Based on the analytical results, MRACF with 37 rings can support a record high 4440 radially fundamental OAM modes at 1550 nm, featuring <53 dB inter-ring crosstalk and >5.67 104 intra-ring modal effective refractive index difference. Furthermore, a record-high 4144 radially fundamental OAM modes with <40 dB inter-ring crosstalk can be supported across C and L bands from 1530 nm to 1625 nm, which is one order of magnitude larger than the number of linearly polarized (LP) modes or supermodes ever reported within one single fiber.

Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) appears to be an alternative solution for overcoming the capacity limit of single-mode fibers (SMFs). A FMF coupler-based mode division multiplexer/demultiplexer (MMUX/DeMMUX) is proposed and theoretically investigated after the fabricated FMF is characterized. MMUXs/DeMMUXs with a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20 dB can be obtained for two-mode multiplexing and three-mode multiplexing over a wavelength span of 60 and 10 nm, respectively. We numerically verify the proposed MMUX/DeMMUX which has the advantages of high MCR, easy fabrication and maintenance, and low wavelength dependence.

Abstract:Twisted light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a special kind of structured light that has a helical phase front, a phase singularity, and a doughnut intensity profile. Beyond widespread developments in manipulation, microscopy, metrology, astronomy, nonlinear and quantum optics, OAM-carrying twisted light has seen emerging application of optical communications in free space and specially designed fibers. Instead of specialty fibers, here we show the direct use of a conventional graded-index multi-mode fiber (MMF) for OAM communications. By exploiting fiber-compatible mode exciting and filtering elements, we excite the first four OAM mode groups in an MMF. We demonstrate 2.6-km MMF transmission using four data-carrying OAM mode groups (OAM0,1, OAM+1,1/OAM-1,1, OAM+2,1, OAM+3,1). Moreover, we demonstrate two data-carrying OAM mode groups multiplexing transmission over the 2.6-km MMF with low-level crosstalk free of multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP). The demonstrations may open up new perspectives to fiber-based OAM communication/non-communication applications using already existing conventional fibers.

Abstract:Recently, orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing has attracted much attention for providing an exponential growth in optical fiber capacity. As an irreplaceable component to promote long-haul OAM mode fiber transmission system, the on-line OAM mode-multiplexed fiber amplifier need to be developed. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian-like erbium doping distribution design method for ring-core erbium doped fiber (RC-EDF) to optimize the differential modal gain (DMG), which can reduce the fabrication complexity of the fiber preform. With a good match with original design, the fabricated RC-EDF was characterized by all the supporting four OAM modes ($vert l vert$ = 1, 2, 3, 4) multiplexed amplification, which achieves an ultra-low DMG less than 0.3 dB at 1550 nm. The gain is above 15 dB and DMG is less than 1.2 dB for four OAM modes across the C-band under a 500 mW pump power. As a proof for transmission, 32 channels (8 wavelengths 4 OAM modes) carrying 32-Gbaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) OAM modes multiplexed-WDM transmission over the OAM-EDFA is demonstrated. The proposed OAM-EDFA with the average OSNR penalties of 0.34 dB may promote the practical implementation for the long-haul OAM modes fiber transmission system.

Abstract:Mode-division multiplexing (MDM), which employs the spatial modes of light as information carriers, has been widely investigated to increase the transmission capacity. Few-mode fibers (FMFs) and multi-mode fibers (MMFs) have been used for MDM fiber transmission. One of the MDM techniques known as twisted light multiplexing using orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes has recently attracted increasing interest. In this Letter, by splicing two FMFs together with a conventional OM3 MMF, we propose and demonstrate OAM-based MDM in a heterogeneous fiber-optic network, i.e., two OAM mode (OAM01 and OAM-11) multiplexing transmission in the heterogeneous FMFs and MMF network. We transmit 20-Gbit/s quadrature phase shift keying signals over two OAM modes in different mode groups without multiple-input multiple-output equalization techniques and achieve less than 2.8 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalties at a bit-error rate of 2×10-3. The experimental results show favorable transmission performance of OAM-based MDM in heterogeneous FMFs and MMF network compared to the one in FMF.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) using orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a recently developed physical layer transmission technique, which has obtained intensive interest among optics, millimeter-wave, and radio frequency due to its capability to enhance communication capacity while retaining an ultra-low receiver complexity. In this paper, the system model based on OAM-MDM is mathematically analyzed and it is theoretically concluded that such system architecture can bring a vast reduction in receiver complexity without capacity penalty compared with conventional line-of-sight multiple-in-multiple-out systems under the same physical constraint. Furthermore, a $4\times 4$ OAM-MDM communication experiment adopting a pair of easily realized Cassegrain reflector antennas capable of multiplexing/demultiplexing four orthogonal OAM modes of $l = {-3}$ , −2, +2, and +3 is carried out at a microwave frequency of 10 GHz. The experimental results show high spectral efficiency as well as low receiver complexity.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, having unique properties of a helical phase structure and doughnut intensity profile, have been widely studied in fiber-optic communications, in terms of OAM modulation and OAM multiplexing. In general, different types of specialty fibers with a ring-shape structure are preferred for more stable OAM transmission, which, however, may face greater manufacturing challenge and larger fiber loss compared to standard multi-mode fibers (MMFs). Therefore, the widely deployed and commercially available standard MMFs that can support hundreds of OAM modes have recently attracted great attention. In this paper, we review recent research progress in OAM communications based on standard MMFs. First, the basic concept of OAM and different types of specially designed OAM fibers are briefly introduced. Then, the OAM mode properties in MMFs and recent works, including OAM mode modulation, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-free OAM mode group multiplexing, small-scale partial MIMO assisted OAM mode multiplexing, and OAM-based heterogeneous fiber-optic networks, are presented. The OAM communications using other widely deployed standard single-mode fibers are also briefly introduced as supplementary. Finally, key challenges and perspectives of OAM communications based on standard MMF are discussed and summarized.

Abstract:The design of a radio communication system employing orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode multiplexing is described. Rotman lenses followed by circular antenna arrays are used to transmit and receive radio frequency beams carrying OAM. In our experiment, two 3 × 3 Rotman lenses are fabricated to feed the three-element circular arrays with certain phase gradients for OAM modes multiplexing and demultiplexing. The OAM-carrying beams of mode number l = +1, 0, and -1 are generated at 9.7 GHz, with each channel carrying an independent data stream of 40 Mbit s-1 quadrature phase shift keying signal in a bandwidth of 20 MHz. And all three channels are recovered with bit error rates below the forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3.

Abstract:Determining how to add more signal channels without enlarging the cable volume is continually an issue in managing submarine cables. To improve the cost per bit and the power efficiency, space division multiplexing (SDM) is regarded as a promising solution that could be used to address optical density and cable capacity challenges regarding submarine cables. In this study, we focus on angular momentum (OAM) modes supporting few-mode ring-core fiber (RCF) solutions for submarine cables. Considering the inhibition of the hydrogen loss for the submarine cable, we propose a center-region-lifted 3-OAM-mode-group supporting RCF (abbreviated to 3-OAM-MG RCF) with a core-cladding index contrast of 0.6${\%}$, and meanwhile we also design and fabricate a matched 3-OAM-MG erbium-doped fiber (EDF). To confirm the short-haul transmission ability, we conduct a wavelength/mode/polarization division multiplexing (WDM-MDM-PDM) transmission test through a 25.3-km 3-OAM-MG RCF, where the coupled modes inside MG are demultiplexed by using 2 2 multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) equalization. The transmission capacity is approximately 35 Tbit/s and the bit error rates (BERs) of all the channels are less than 2.4$ imes 10^{-2}$. For the application scenario of long-haul submarine communication, a cascade WDM-MDM transmission system consisting of 3-OAM-MG RCF and 3-OAM-MG EDF is set up, which makes the BERs of all the mode and wavelength channels below the 20${\%}$ soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold. It indicates that data-carrying OAM mode multiplexing transmission has potential application in a long-haul submarine cable system.

Abstract:In this letter, we proposed and fabricated a single ring uniform erbium-doped ring-core fiber with trench assisted to achieve high modal gain and low differential modal gain (DMG) in amplifying orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. This is enabled by confining all modes effectively in a highly similar area to improve the overlap integral of erbium ions and mode fields. Theoretical analyses and experimental results suggest the proposed fiber can support four OAM mode groups ( = 1 - 4, 14 OAM modes in total). Moreover, the negligible distortion in the intensity and phase patterns of the OAM modes after amplification indicates a stable and effective amplification process. Furthermore, the experimental results exhibit that the RC-EDF amplifier acquires some favorable performances with a high modal gain more than 23 dB and low DMG less than 1 dB for all 14 OAM modes across the whole C-band.

Abstract:A light beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is characterized by a helical phase-front that winds around the center of the beam. These beams have unique properties that have found numerous applications. In the field of data transmission, they represent a degree of freedom that could potentially increase capacity by a factor of several distinct OAM modes. While an efficient method for (de)composing beams based on their OAM exists for free-space optics, a device capable of performing this (de)composition in an integrated, compact fiber application without the use of external active optical elements and for multiple OAM modes simultaneously has not been reported. In this study, a waveguide structure is presented that can serve as a broadband OAM (de)multiplexer. The structure design is based on the adiabatic principle used in photonic lanterns for highly efficient conversion of spatially separated single modes into eigenmodes of a few-mode fiber. In addition, an artificial magnetic field is introduced by twisting the structure during the adiabatic evolution, which removes the degeneracy between modes having the same absolute OAM. This structure can simplify, stabilize, and miniaturize the creation or decomposition of OAM beams, making them useful for various applications.

Learning-enabled data transmission with up to 32 multiplexed orbital angular momentum channels through a commercial multi-mode fiber

Abstract:Multiplexing orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes enable high-capacity optical communication. However, the highly similar speckle patterns of adjacent OAM modes produced by strong mode coupling in common fibers prevent the utility of OAM channel demultiplexing. In this paper, we propose a machine learning-supported fractional OAM-multiplexed data transmission system to sort highly scattered data from up to 32 multiplexed OAM channels propagating through a commercial multi-mode fiber parallelly with an accuracy of >99.92%, which is the largest bit number of OAM superstates reported to date (to the best of our knowledge). Here, by learning limited samples, unseen OAM superstates during the training process can be predicted precisely, which reduces the explosive quantity of the dataset. To verify its application, both gray and colored images, encoded by the given system, have been successfully transmitted with error rates of <0.26%. Our work might provide a promising avenue for high-capacity OAM optical communication in scattering environments.

Abstract:Optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode multiplexing has emerged as a promising technique for boosting communication capacity. However, most existing studies have concentrated on channel (de)multiplexing, overlooking the critical aspect of channel routing. This challenge involves the reallocation of multiplexed OAM modes across both spatial and temporal domains—a vital step for developing versatile communication networks. To address this gap, we introduce a novel approach based on the time evolution of OAM modes, utilizing the orthogonal conversion and diffractive modulation capabilities of unitary transformations. This approach facilitates high-dimensional orthogonal transformations of OAM mode vectors, altering both the propagation direction and the spatial location. Using Fresnel diffraction matrices as unitary operators, it manipulates the spatial locations of light beams during transmission, breaking the propagation invariance and enabling temporal evolution. As a demonstration, we have experimentally implemented the deep routing of four OAM modes within two distinct time sequences. Achieving an average diffraction efficiency above 78.31%, we have successfully deep-routed 4.69 Tbit·s −1 quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals carried by four multiplexed OAM channels, with a bit error rate below 10 –6 . These results underscore the efficacy of our routing strategy and its promising prospects for practical applications.

Abstract:Communications using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of radio waves have attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, a novel millimeter-wave dual OAM mode antenna is cleverly designed, using which a 60 GHz wireless communication link with two separate OAM channels is experimentally demonstrated. The main body of the dual OAM antenna is a traveling-wave ring resonator using two feeding ports fed by a 90° hybrid coupler. A parabolic reflector is used to focus the beams. All the antenna components are fabricated by 3D printing technique and the electro-less copper plating surface treatment process. The performances of the antenna, such as S-parameters, near-fields, directivity, and isolation between the two OAM modes are measured. Experimental results show that this antenna can radiate two coaxially propagating OAM modes beams simultaneously. The multiplexing and de-multiplexing are easily realized in the antennas themselves. The two OAM mode channels have good isolation of more than 20 dB, thus ensuring the reliable transmission links at the same time.

Abstract:We herein present a weakly-coupled double bow-tie multi-ring elliptical core multi-mode fiber (DBT-MREC-MMF) supporting 22 eigenmodes for mode division multiplexing across the C+L+U band. The proposed fiber introduces a multi-ring elliptical core, bow-tie air holes, and bow-tie stress-applying areas to effectively split adjacent eigenmodes. By utilizing the finite element method (FEM), we accordingly optimized the fiber to support the 22 modes under the weakly-coupled condition. We evaluated the impact of fiber parameters on the minimum effective refractive index difference (min Δneff) between adjacent eigenmodes, model birefringence (Bm), and bending loss at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Additionally, broadband performance metrics, such as effective modal index (neff), effective index difference (Δneff), effective mode area (Aeff), differential mode delay (DMD), and chromatic dispersion (D), were comprehensively studied over the entire C+L+U band, ranging from 1530 to 1675 nm. The proposed fiber is capable of supporting 22 completely separated eigenmodes with a min Δneff between adjacent eigenmodes larger than 3.089 × 10−4 over the entire C+L+U band. The proposed DBT-MREC-MMF holds great potential for use in short-haul communication systems that require MDM to improve transmission capacity and expand bandwidth.
