Abstract:Graphene, whose absorbance is approximately independent of wavelength, allows broadband light–matter interactions with ultrafast responses. The interband optical absorption of graphene can be saturated readily under strong excitation, thereby enabling scientists to exploit the photonic properties of graphene to realize ultrafast lasers. The evanescent field interaction scheme of the propagating light with graphene covered on a D-shaped fibre or microfibre has been employed extensively because of the nonblocking configuration. Obviously, most of the fibre surface is unused in these techniques. Here, we exploit a graphene-clad microfibre (GCM) saturable absorber in a mode-locked fibre laser for the generation of ultrafast pulses. The proposed all-surface technique can guarantee a higher efficiency of light–graphene interactions than the aforementioned techniques. Our GCM-based saturable absorber can generate ultrafast optical pulses within 1.5 μm. This saturable absorber is compatible with current fibre lasers and has many merits such as low saturation intensities, ultrafast recovery times and wide wavelength ranges. The proposed saturable absorber will pave the way for graphene-based wideband photonics.

Abstract:We demonstrate ultrafast optical modulation using a single 1-μm-diameter graphene-decorated microfiber, which is fabricated with a convenient and controllable evanescent-field-induced deposition method. Benefitting from the significantly enhanced light-graphene interaction of the subwavelength transvers dimension of the microfiber and accumulation of the saturable absorption of the piled graphene flakes, the microfiber shows nonlinear saturable absorption with a peak power threshold down to 1.75 W (60 MW/cm<sup>2</sup>), with a measured response time of about 3.5 ps.

Abstract:Benefiting from its unique electrical and optical properties, graphene as a saturable absorber (SA) has been widely explored. However, it is still challenging to develop SAs with large modulation depths due to the weak absorption of the monolayer graphene. Here a graphene-on-slot waveguide configuration was demonstrated to overcome this limitation. From the experimental study, with only 20 μm long graphene, the graphene-on-silicon slot waveguide exhibited lower saturation energy of 313 pJ and seven times larger modulation depth, compared with a graphene-on-silicon nitride rib waveguide. Our study paves the way for the development of ultra-compact graphene-on-waveguide SAs for ultrafast lasers and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We experimentally study the in-plane optical absorption and free carrier absorption (FCA) in graphene-on-silicon waveguides using a pump-probe measurement over microsecond timescales. The silicon waveguide is fabricated using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible processes, and directly covered by a graphene layer. Saturable absorption in the graphene is observed at the beginning of the pump pulse followed by an increase in absorption. The increase in absorption builds up over several microseconds, and is experimental evidence that free carriers generated by the pump absorption in graphene can transfer into silicon waveguides. The FCA in silicon waveguides eventually dominates the optical loss, which reaches ~9 dB, after several microseconds. All-optical modulations of the probe light are thus demonstrated. There is also a large thermally induced change in waveguide effective refractive index because of the optical absorption in the graphene.

Abstract:The optical conductance of monolayer graphene is defined solely by the fine structure constant. The absorbance has been predicted to be independent of frequency. In principle, the interband optical absorption in zero-gap graphene could be saturated readily under strong excitation due to Pauli blocking. Here, we demonstrate the use of atomic layer graphene as saturable absorber in a mode-locked fiber laser for the generation of ultrashort soliton pulses (756 fs) at the telecommunication band. The modulation depth can be tuned in a wide range from 66.5% to 6.2% by varying the thickness of graphene. Our results suggest that ultrathin graphene films are potentially useful as optical elements in fiber lasers. Graphene as a laser mode locker can have many merits such as lower saturation intensity, ultrafast recovery time, tunable modulation depth and wideband tuneability.

Abstract:We investigate the saturation of the optical absorption in graphene induced by ultrafast optical pulses. Within a microscopic theory, we study the momentum-, angle-, and time-resolved interplay of anisotropic excitation, carrier-carrier, and carrier-phonon scattering, and its influence on the saturation of absorption and transmission. In agreement with performed experiments, we observe a linear regime for the intensity-dependence of the transmission at low pump fluences and a nonlinear saturation in the high excitation regime. Applying 10 fs-pulses, we obtain a saturation fluence of approximately 0.65 mJ/cm2. We demonstrate how the interplay of Pauli-blocking and intensity-dependent relaxation determines the saturation behavior.

Abstract:Saturable absorption is a non-perturbative nonlinear optical phenomenon that plays a pivotal role in the generation of ultrafast light pulses. Here we show that this effect emerges in graphene at unprecedentedly low light intensities, thus opening avenues to new nonlinear physics and applications in optical technology. Specifically, we theoretically investigate saturable absorption in extended graphene by developing a non-perturbative single-particle approach, describing conduction-electron dynamics in the atomically-thin material using the two-dimensional Dirac equation for massless Dirac fermions, which is recast in the form of generalized Bloch equations. By solving the electron dynamics non-perturbatively, we account for both interband and intraband contributions to the intensity-dependent saturated conductivity and conclude that the former dominates regardless of the intrinsic doping state of the material. The results are in excellent agreement with atomistic quantum-mechanical simulations including higher-band effects. Additionally, we find that the modulation depth of saturable absorption in graphene can be electrically manipulated through an externally applied gate voltage. Our results are relevant for the development of graphene-based optoelectronic devices, as well as for applications in mode-locking and random lasers.

Abstract:We present an experimental study of the nonlinear absorption of graphene-on-silicon waveguides. The wavelength dependence of absorption saturation from a narrow linewidth optical pump is measured. Spectral hole burning (SHB) introduces a decrease in the probe absorption near the pump wavelength, which may be distinguished from the free carrier absorption (FCA) by using the time dependence of the buildup of the free carrier population. Beyond SHB bandwidth, only FCA dominates the waveguide loss. The spectral bandwidth of absorption bleaching from SHB is measured to have a full width at half-maximum of ~12 meV (~20 nm) at 16.8 dBm pump power.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the intrinsic properties of monolayer graphene allow it to act as a more effective saturable absorber for mode-locking fiber lasers compared to multilayer graphene. The absorption of monolayer graphene can be saturated at lower excitation intensity compared to multilayer graphene, graphene with wrinkle-like defects, and functionalized graphene. Monolayer graphene has a remarkable large modulation depth of 95.3%, whereas the modulation depth of multilayer graphene is greatly reduced due to nonsaturable absorption and scattering loss. Picoseconds ultrafast laser pulse (1.23 ps) can be generated using monolayer graphene as saturable absorber. Due to the ultrafast relaxation time, larger modulation depth and lower scattering loss of monolayer graphene, it performs better than multilayer graphene in terms of pulse shaping ability, pulse stability and output energy.

Abstract:In this work, we conducted systematic comparisons on the nonlinear optical properties of graphene and that of commercial semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) at 2 mu m wavelength. Our results showed that graphene has significant advantages over the commercial SESAM, exhibiting similar to 28% less absorptive cross-section ratio of excited-state to ground-state and similar to 50 times faster relaxation time. This implies that graphene can be exploited as a better mode-locker than the current commercial SESAM for high power, high repetition rate and ultrafast mid-infrared laser sources.

Abstract:Graphene is a useful saturable absorber in a variety of lasers working in mode-locking or Q-switch regimes. The optical performance of chemically synthesized graphene is still not completely characterized. In this study, the saturable absorption and the nonlinear refractive index of graphene flakes in N-methylpyrrolidone, in both liquid and solid phases, have been studied at 800 nm with the z-scan technique using femtosecond laser pulses. The results obtained using a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator in the mode-locking regime (6 fs, 78 MHz) or in the continuous wave shows that the optical properties of graphene have a thermal origin, while at the lower repetition rate and higher energy and intensity of a Ti:sapphire amplifier (95 fs, 1 kHz), it shows the electronic Kerr effect. Solid samples with very high optical densities, equivalent to 60 layers of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), can be fabricated. They show a higher saturation intensity ( I s ≈ 100 GW cm–2) than CVD-grown (74 MW cm–2) or epitaxially grown (4 GW cm–2) graphene and intensity-dependent changes in transmission from 25% to 43%. Abstract:A comparative research on saturable absorption (SA) behavior dependence on wavelength and pulse duration was performed for graphene polymer composites. Free-standing graphene-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films were fabricated by using solution cast method in combination of liquid phase exfoliation. SA responses were observed by using an open-aperture Z-scan technique for 340 fs pulses at 1030 nm and 515 nm from a mode-locked fiber laser, and 6 ns pulses at 1064 nm and 532 nm from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The graphene films possess better SA property, i.e., larger SA coefficient and figure of merit (FOM), and lower saturation intensity I(s), for ns pulses than that for fs pulses at the similar near infrared (NIR) wavelength. For fs pulses, the films show better SA response at 1030 nm than that at 515 nm. By employing slow and fast SA modelling, the excited state and ground state absorption cross sections were estimated to be ~10(-17) cm(2), and the ratio was ~0.6 at NIR for both fs and ns pulses.

Abstract:Mid‐infrared ultrafast lasers have emerged as a promising platform for both science and industry because of their inherent high raw power and eye‐safe spectrum. 2D nanostructures such as graphene have emerged as promising photonic materials for laser mode‐locking to generate ultrashort pulses. However, there are still many unanswered questions about graphene's key advantages to be practical devices, especially over the matured semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Abstract:On-chip ultrafast mode-locking lasers are basic building blocks for the realization of a chip-based optical frequency comb. In this paper, an ultrafast saturable absorber made up of a graphene pad on top of a silicon waveguide is applied to implement an ultrafast pulse laser. Benefiting from the small mode area of the graphene/silicon hybrid waveguide, the saturable pulse energy is reduced by two orders of magnitude compared with the fiber. A mode-locked pulse with a duration of 542 fs and a repetition rate of 54.37 MHz is realized. Pump–probe measurement shows that the carrier relaxation process of free carrier recombination with atomic-thin graphene/silicon junctions is three orders of magnitude faster than silicon, which plays a fundamental role in pulse narrowing. The chip-scale silicon ultrafast laser lays a foundation for a new class of nonlinear devices, in which a combination with multiple functional silicon photonic circuits enables efficient nonlinear interaction at the micrometer scale and less than 1 W of power consumption.

Abstract:The enhanced nonlinear optical response of a one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PC) made from polymers and graphene composites is observed. The graphene PC was fabricated by spin-coating. It shows obvious bandgaps at two wavelengths in transmittance. Femtosecond Z-scan measurement at 515 nm and 1030 nm reveals a distinct enhancement in the effective nonlinear absorption coefficient Beff (and imaginary part of third-order dielectric susceptibility ImX(3)) for graphene nanoflakes embedded in the PC, when compared with the bulk graphene-polymer dispersion. The effect is studied in a wide range of laser intensities. The inclusion of graphene into a 1D-PC remarkably decreases the saturable absorption threshold and saturation intensity, providing a desired solution for an advanced all-optical laser mode-locking device.

Abstract:To fully utilize graphene's remarkable optical properties for optoelectronic applications, it needs to be integrated in planar photonic systems. Here, we demonstrate integration of graphene on silicon photonic circuits and precise measurement of the optical absorption coefficient in a graphene/waveguide hybrid structure. A method based on Mach-Zehnder interferometry is employed to achieve high measurement precision and consistency, yielding a maximal value of absorption coefficient of 0.2 dB/{\mu}m when graphene is located directly on top of the waveguide. The results agree with theoretical model utilizing the universal ac conductivity in graphene. Our work provides an important guide for the design and optimization of integrated graphene optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In this work, γ-graphyne (γ-GY), a novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope, is demonstrated to have excellent ultrafast saturable absorption properties superior to that of graphene in the near infrared region. For practical application, the γ-GY nanosheets were directly dispersed in toluene in the existence of polymer, and were easily fabricated into flexible thin films. As proof-of-concept, the performances of γ-GY as a saturable absorber in passively Q-switched lasers and in all-optical switches were investigated. A minimum pulse width of 241 ns with the maximum pulse energy of 0.76 µJ and the corresponding peak power of 3.15 W was achieved for a γ-GY Q-switched solid-state laser at 1.06 µm. The γ-GY all-optical switching shows a rising/falling time of 1.46 ms/ 2.13 ms.
