Abstract:Multistaged acceleration of solid-density thin foils by ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulse is investigated. A stable radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) stage is first established. Higher dimensional effects such as transverse instabilities and enhanced electron heating then gradually make the initially opaque foil transparent to the laser light. Accordingly, the dominant acceleration mechanism changes smoothly from RPA to target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). The transition can therefore enhance the maximum energy of the accelerated ions but broaden their energy spectrum. For a double-layer target, however, the light ions (protons) in the backlayer can be efficiently accelerated in the RPA and TNSA regimes nearly monoenergetically. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that with this scheme a circularly polarized laser pulse of peak intensity 3.9 x 1022 W/cm(2) can produce a collimated proton bunch that persists for many Rayleigh lengths and its peak energy can reach 4.2 GeV with FWHM of 200 MeV. Abstract:Focal spot effects on the generation of proton beams are investigated by a high-intensity high-contrast laser irradiating on solid foil in target normal sheath acceleration experiments. Different spot size, transverse shape, and intensity of the laser are obtained by appropriately using deformable mirrors and parabolic mirrors. Experiments show that the maximum proton energy is mainly determined by the laser intensity if the focal spot size is not seriously changed. Compared with the previous experimental results, the optimum foil thickness d(o) is scaled by the laser intensity I as d(o) similar to I-0.33. The corresponding theoretical estimation is carried out as d(o) similar to I-0.25 for ultra-high intensity laser systems with similar contrast. MULTI and particle-in-cell simulations are used to interpret the experimental results.

Abstract:Intense lasers can accelerate protons in sufficient numbers and energy that the resulting beam can heat materials to exotic warm (10 s of eV temperature) states. Here we show with experimental data that a laser-driven proton beam focused onto a target heated it in a localized spot with size strongly dependent upon material and as small as 35 μm radius. Simulations indicate that cold stopping power values cannot model the intense proton beam transport in solid targets well enough to match the large differences observed. In the experiment a 74 J , 670 fs laser drove a focusing proton beam that transported through different thicknesses of solid Mylar, Al, Cu or Au, eventually heating a rear, thin, Au witness layer. The XUV emission seen from the rear of the Au indicated a clear dependence of proton beam transport upon atomic number, Z, of the transport layer: a larger and brighter emission spot was measured after proton transport through the lower Z foils even with equal mass density for supposed equivalent proton stopping range. Beam transport dynamics pertaining to the observed heated spot were investigated numerically with a particle-in-cell (PIC) code. In simulations protons moving through an Al transport layer result in higher Au temperature responsible for higher Au radiant emittance compared to a Cu transport case. The inferred finding that proton stopping varies with temperature in different materials, considerably changing the beam heating profile, can guide applications seeking to controllably heat targets with intense proton beams.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Proton beams driven from short pulse lasers can deposit their energy in material with exceptionally high intensity and drive rapidly evolving plasma conditions and dynamic currents which lead to previously-unseen proton stopping and transport behavior. These effects, such as extended range and narrowing of the heated plasma volume, become more prominent as the beam energy and pulse length increase. To study this behavior we conducted experiments using kiloJoule short pulse lasers at the OMEGA EP facility. We used a 1250 J, 10 ps pulse to irradiate spherically curved diamond (C) targets with three target mounting configurations. The spectrum of protons from the target was measured from the source target as well as after passing through two transport layers and a Cu tracer layer. Cu K-shell x-ray fluorescence, caused by collisions of the beam protons and electrons with Cu atoms, was imaged with the Spherical Crystal Imager. The Cu K-α emission was focused and brighter by a factor of 8 with targets with conical structures compared to stand-alone hemispheres. The enhanced focusing and brightness is due to the sheath field generated inside the conical structure produced by fast electrons escaping the target. These focusing fields were detected using high spatial- and temporal-resolution proton radiographs. The beam density upon entry into the foils is estimated to be 1018 cm-3 for the structured target. The proton spectra through the foils were quintessentially different for the structured (high intensity beam) vs. stalk-mounted (diverging beam) targets. We have developed the capability to model beam/solid interactions self-consistently by modification of the particle-in-cell code LSP to accurately predict collisional stopping of protons over a wide range of warm dense and hot dense states. The findings include rich new physical effects that become important in proton transport for beams corresponding to the experim- nt and hypothetical higher intensity beams.

Matter and Radiation at Extremes

Abstract:We report systematic studies of laser-driven proton beams produced with micrometer-thick solid targets made of aluminum and plastic, respectively. Distinct effects of the target materials are found on the total charge, cutoff energy, and beam spot of protons in the experiments, and these are described well by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations incorporating intrinsic material properties. It is found that with a laser intensity of 8 × 1019 W/cm2, target normal sheath acceleration is the dominant mechanism for both types of target. For a plastic target, the higher charge and cutoff energy of the protons are due to the greater energy coupling efficiencies from the intense laser beams, and the larger divergence angle of the protons is due to the deflection of hot electrons during transport in the targets. We also find that the energy loss of hot electrons in targets of different thickness has a significant effect on the proton cutoff energy. The consistent results obtained here further narrow the gap between simulations and experiments.

Abstract:Micro-structures are advantageous in manipulating the laser intensity and laser-driven high energy electron sources. Both effects benefit acceleration of high energy protons by ultra-intense laser pulses. We investigate the enhancement on proton cut-off energy and yield induced by micro-wire-array structure via particle-in-cell simulation. Our simulations reveal that the abundant energetic electrons originating from the structures are essential for sequential proton acceleration. We find that this effect becomes active only when the laser pulse intensity reaches a = 2. The proton energies are further optimized by designing structures of different featured sizes. The results suggest two distinctive regimes, where the electron number is significantly enhanced by using short and dense arrays, while the long and sparse arrays are more efficient in increasing the cut-off beam energies. When combining both patterns, we see that the compound target contains features from both the long array and the short array, comparing to flat interfaces. These results will guide future experiments utilizing three-dimensional micro-engineered targets.

Abstract:The effects of target density on proton acceleration driven by an intense sub-ps laser pulse are investigated using two-dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell simulations. Results show that at higher density the target-normal-sheath acceleration (TNSA) is more effective than shock acceleration for protons from a plastic target. Furthermore a lower-density target is favorable to higher energy of the TNSA protons. Moreover, the longitudinal electric fields at the target surfaces may reveal typical inhomogeneous structures for a long acceleration time. The conversion efficiency of laser energy into particle (electron, proton, and C(+) ion) energy is found to increase with decreasing target density.

Abstract:Acceleration and focusing of high-energy proton beams from fast-ignition (FI) -related hemisphere-cone assembled targets have been numerically studied by hybrid particle-in-cell simulations and compared with those from planar-foil and open-hemisphere targets. The whole physical process including the laser-plasma interaction has been self-consistently modeled for 15 ps, at which time the protons reach asymptotic motion. It is found that the achievable focus of proton beams is limited by the thermal pressure gradients in the co-moving hot electrons, which induce a transverse defocusing electric field that bends proton trajectories near the axis. For the advanced hemisphere-cone target, the flow of hot electrons along the cone wall induces a local transverse focusing sheath field, resulting in a clear enhancement in proton focusing; however, it leads to a significant loss of longitudinal sheath potential, reducing the total conversion efficiency from laser to protons.
Stable Laser-Produced Quasimonoenergetic Proton Beams from Interactive Laser and Target Shaping

Abstract:In radiation pressure dominated laser ion acceleration schemes, transverse target deformation and Rayleigh-Taylor (RT)-like instability always develop quickly, break the acceleration structure, limit the final accelerated ion energy, and lower the beam quality. To overcome these issues, we propose a target design named dual parabola targets consisting of a lateral thick part and a middle thin part, each with a parabolic front surface of different focus positions. By using such a target, through interactive laser and target shaping processes, the central part of the thin target will detach from the whole target and a microtarget is formed. This enables the stable acceleration of the central part of the target to high energy with high quality since usual target deformation and RT-like instabilities with planar targets are suppressed. Furthermore, this target design reduces the laser intensity required to optimize radiation pressure acceleration by more than 1 order of magnitude compared to normal flat targets with similar thickness and density. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations indicate that a quasimonoenergetic proton beam with peak energy over 200 MeV and energy spread around 2% can be generated when such a solid target (with density 400n(c) and target thickness 0.5 lambda(0)) is irradiated by a 100 fs long circularly polarized laser pulse at focused intensity I-L similar to 9.2 x 10(21) W/cm(2).

Abstract:Multi-dimensional effects on ion acceleration by a normally incident linearly polarized intense laser pulse interacting with a thin solid target have been investigated numerically, where the laser has the peak intensity of 1.37×1020 W/cm2, focused spot size of 6 μm, pulse duration of 33 fs, and total pulse energy about 3 J, which are commercially available now. We have checked the effects of simulation geometries by running one, two, and three dimensional (1D, 2D, 3D) particle-in-cell simulations. 3D simulation results show that, in the case of using a relatively thick target (in the opaque regime, i.e., 2 μm) with the so-called target normal sheath field acceleration mechanism, electrons spread almost uniformly along two transverse directions. While in the case of using an ultra-thin target (in the relativistic-induced transparent regime, i.e., 100 nm) with the so-called break-out afterburner mechanism, electrons spread more quickly along the direction orthogonal to the laser polarization direction especially at the early stage. The transverse spreading of electrons strongly decreases the electron density at the rear side of the target. Such an effect causes different estimation of electron temperatures in different simulation geometries. Usually, 1D and 2D simulations overestimate the temperature; and as a result, the maximum proton energy observed in 1D and 2D simulations is, respectively, about 3 and 2 times of that observed in 3D simulation.

Abstract:When a circularly polarized laser pulse interacts with a foil target, there are three stages: pre-hole-boring, hole-boring and the light sail acceleration. We study the electron and ion dynamics in the first stage and find the minimum foil thickness requirement for a given laser intensity. Based on this analysis, we propose to use a shaped foil for ion acceleration, whose thickness varies transversely to match the laser intensity. Then, the target evolves into three regions: the acceleration, transparency and deformation regions. In the acceleration region, the target can be uniformly accelerated producing a mono-energetic and spatially collimated ion beam. Detailed numerical simulations are performed to check the feasibility and robustness of this scheme, such as the influence of shape factors and surface roughness. A GeV mono-energetic proton beam is observed in the three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations when a laser pulse with the focus intensity of 1022W=cm2 is used. The energy conversion efficiency of laser pulse to accelerated proton beam is more than 23%. Synchrotron radiation and damping effects are also checked in the interaction.

Abstract:Transport of intense proton beams in solid-density matter is numerically investigated using an implicit hybrid particle-in-cell code. Both collective effects and stopping for individual beam particles are included through the electromagnetic fields solver and stopping power calculations utilizing the varying local target conditions, allowing self-consistent transport studies. Two target heating mechanisms, the beam energy deposition and Ohmic heating driven by the return current, are compared. The dependences of proton beam transport in solid targets on the beam parameters are systematically analyzed, i.e., simulations with various beam intensities, pulse durations, kinetic energies, and energy distributions are compared. The proton beam deposition profile and ultimate target temperature show strong dependence on intensity and pulse duration. A strong magnetic field is generated from a proton beam with high density and tight beam radius, resulting in focusing of the beam and localized heating of the target up to hundreds of eV. Radiation pressure acceleration of high-quality ion beams using ultrashort laser pulses

Abstract:The generation of compact, high-energy ion beams is one of the most promising applications of intense laser-matter interactions, but the control of the beam spectral quality remains an outstanding challenge. We show that in radiation pressure acceleration of a thin solid target the onset of electron heating is determined by the growth of the Rayleigh-Taylor-like instability at the front surface and must be controlled to produce ion beams with high spectral quality in the light sail regime. The growth rate of the instability imposes an upper limit on the laser pulse duration and intensity to achieve high spectral beam quality and we demonstrate that under this optimal regime, the maximum peak ion beam energy per nucleon is independent of target density, composition, and laser energy (transverse spot size). Our predictions are validated by two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, which indicate that for recent and upcoming experimental facilities using ultrashort ($\lesssim 25$ fs) laser pulses it is possible to produce $100 - 300$ MeV proton beams with $\sim 30\%$ energy spread and high laser-to-proton energy conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Double-layer targets composed of near-critical-density carbon nanotube foams (CNFs) and solid foils have shown their advantages in laser-driven ion acceleration under high relativistic intensity. Here, we report the experimental and numerical results on the laser-accelerated proton beams from such targets under moderate relativistic intensities I∼5×1019W/cm2. 40-TW femtosecond laser pulses were used to irradiate CNF-based double-layer targets. Compared to single-layer targets, significant enhancements on the cutoff energy and numbers of ions were observed. It was found that the CNF layer also leads to a larger divergence angle and a more homogeneous spatial distribution profile of the proton beam. Particle-in-cell simulations reveal the reason for the enhanced proton acceleration. It is found that the lateral electric field and the strong magnetic field built by the directly accelerated electrons from the CNF layer contribute to the enlarged divergence angle.
Ion acceleration from micrometric targets immersed in an intense laser field

Abstract:We report on an experimental study of proton acceleration by intense laser irradiation of micrometric bar targets, whose dimensions are transversely immersed in the laser focal volume and longitudinally smaller than half its wavelength. Using only 120 mJ of laser energy, we recorded proton energies in excess of 6 MeV, exceeding those reported with any other experimental method by a factor of 3. 3D particle-in-cell simulations revealed that the efficient energy transfer from the diffracted laser fields to electrons on both sides of the target, combined with its reduced surface area, results in a thicker electron sheath and higher accelerating electric field gradients. We demonstrated numerically how this ion acceleration technique opens up the possibility of laser ion acceleration in multiple stages, allowing manipulation of the accelerated ion spectrum by optical means.

Effects of Laser Polarization on Target Focusing and Acceleration in a Laser-Ion Lens and Accelerator

Abstract:We present the process of ion acceleration using ultra-thin foils irradiated by elliptically polarized, high-intensity laser pulses. Recently, efficient generation of monoenergetic ion beams was introduced using the concept of laser-ion lensing and acceleration (LILA). LILA is an innovative technique where the target's radially varying thickness enables simultaneous acceleration and focusing of a proton beam. In this work, we extend the LILA framework to incorporate elliptically polarized (EP) laser pulses. While it's commonly assumed that EP lasers are unsuitable for radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) due to excessive electron heating that compromises ion acceleration, our multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations challenge this notion. We show that, with proper optimization of the target's average thickness, EP laser pulses can successfully drive the LILA mechanism. We also demonstrate that with a non-uniform thickness target, even linearly polarized laser pulses can efficiently generate low-emittance focused ion beams, with the overall laser-to-ions energy conversion comparable to those predicted for circularly polarized laser pulses.

Abstract:The interactions of ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulses with a mixed solid target and a double-layer target are studied by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Different carbon and proton compositions in the targets are used in the simulations. It is shown that the proton acceleration mechanisms in both targets are very sensitive to the ion density ratios between protons and carbon ions. For a mixed solid target, a relatively low proton density gives rise to monoenergetic peaks in the proton energy spectrum while a high proton density leads to a large cut-off energy and wide energy spread. With the increase of the ratio, the so-called directed-Coulomb-explosion becomes dominated over the radiation pressure. Surprisingly, for a double-layer target with a front proton layer and an ultrathin rear carbon layer, a highly monoenergetic proton beam with a peak energy of 1.7 GeV/u, an energy spread of ∼4%, and a divergency angle of 2° can be obtained, which might have diverse applications in medical therepy and proton imaging in future.

Abstract:Intense particle beams generated from the interaction of ultrahigh intensity lasers with sample foils provide options in radiography, high-yield neutron sources, high-energy-density-matter generation, and ion fast ignition. An accurate understanding of beam transportation behavior in dense matter is crucial for all these applications. Here we report the experimental evidence on one order of magnitude enhancement of intense laser-accelerated proton beam stopping in dense ionized matter, in comparison with the current-widely used models describing individual ion stopping in matter. Supported by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we attribute the enhancement to the strong decelerating electric field approaching 1 GV/m that can be created by the beam-driven return current. This collective effect plays the dominant role in the stopping of laser-accelerated intense proton beams in dense ionized matter. This finding is essential for the optimum design of ion driven fast ignition and inertial confinement fusion.

Abstract:Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that when an intense picosecond laser pulse irradiates a target with steep but smooth density profile, the target protons can be accelerated to high energies with small divergence by a combination of target normal sheath acceleration and radiation pressure acceleration. The effects of plasma density profile on proton acceleration and collimation are investigated. In general, smaller(larger) density gradients lead to larger(smaller) self-generated azimuthal magnetic fields and smaller(larger) target-back electrostatic sheath fields, and thus proton beams with smaller(larger) divergence angle as well as cutoff energy. Accordingly, within limits, proton beams with desired peaked spectrum, energy, and divergence angle can be obtained by tailoring the target density profiles. Abstract:Proton acceleration by ultra-intense laser pulse irradiating a target with cross-section smaller than the laser spot size and connected to a parabolic density channel is investigated. The target splits the laser into two parallel propagating parts, which snowplow the back-side plasma electrons along their paths, creating two adjacent parallel wakes and an intense return current in the gap between them. The radiation-pressure pre-accelerated target protons trapped in the wake fields now undergo acceleration as well as collimation by the quasistatic wake electrostatic and magnetic fields. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation shows that stable long-distance acceleration can be realized, and a 30 fs monoenergetic ion beam of > 10 GeV peak energy and < 2degree divergence can be produced by a 9.8 *10^21 W/cm2 circularly polarized laser pulse.
