Abstract:In this paper, we propose a subcarrier-index modulation-based asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SACO-OFDM) scheme for optical wireless communication (OWC) systems, which benefits from the subcarrier-index modulation (SIM) and asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) techniques. SACO-OFDM conveys additional information via the subcarrier indexing, and the error rate of the bit transmitted by the subcarrier indexing is much lower than that of the conventional M-ary modulation scheme. On the other hand, as the signal constellation in M-ary modulation is relieved, SACO-OFDM has simple transceiver structure and low detection complexity. Moreover, considering the spectral, an enhanced SACO-OFDM (ESACO-OFDM) using even subcarriers is proposed. In this technique, the odd subcarriers are activated for SACO-OFDM, and the imaginary part of even subcarriers are activated for pulse-amplitude-modulated discrete multitone (PAM-DMT). Clearly, ESACO-OFDM achieves better spectral efficiency than the conventional optical OFDM, since all subcarriers are used for data transmission. Simulation results verify the significant bit error rate (BER) and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) improvement by the proposed ESACO-OFDM, especially for the medium-to-high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.
Comparison of Transmission Performances for CO-SCFDE and CO-OFDM Systems

Abstract:Single-carrier (SC) and multicarrier (MC) transmissions have emerged as two competitive technologies for long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission systems. In this letter, we compare chromatic dispersion (CD) and nonlinearity tolerances for coherent optical SC frequency-domain-equalization and SC orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing systems. We establish the simulation systems employing the same structures of transmitter and receiver, the same structure of frame, and almost the same frequency-domain equalization method except the inverse fast Fourier transform processing. Both CD tolerance and nonlinear transmission performance in single-channel and wavelength-division-multiplexing scenarios are investigated. The comparison can reveal the difference of SC and MC transmissions.

Abstract:Recently, a scheme called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with Generalized Index Modulation (OFDM-GIM) is proposed, in which the number of active subcarriers in an OFDM sub-block is adjustable and a higher spectral efficiency is achieved compared with the conventional Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation(OFDM-IM) scheme. In this paper, based on the general index modulation structure, a spectrum-efficient Index Modulation with Improved Mapping is proposed. In this scheme, each sub-block can use different constellation mappings as well as different numbers of active subcarriers to transmit information. We further propose the corresponding transmitter and the receiver structures. The simulation results show that the proposed system achieves a higher spectrum efficiency and better BER performance compared with the existing OFDM-IM schemes.

Abstract:This letter focuses on a spatial modulation (SM)-based multiple input single output optical wireless communication system. In the system, both input-dependent noise and finite alphabet are employed. Based on information theory, the theoretical expressions of the mutual information and its lower bound are derived. By maximizing the minimum distance, an optimization problem for precoding design is formulated. Then, an interior point method-based iteration algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed SM scheme outperforms that of the conventional, choosing the best-gain channel scheme. Moreover, the proposed precoding scheme can provide better system performance than the scheme without precoding.

Abstract:Optical superchannel employing single-carrier (SC) and multi-carrier (MC) subband modulation techniques have been widely discussed for high-speed coherent optical transmission and networks. In this paper, we establish uniform system design based on frequency-domain equalization (FDE) and carry out a thorough study on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel versus SC frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM, also named as DFT-spread-OFDM) superchannel. The baseband signal characteristics of SCFDM and OFDM are analyzed. SCFDM and OFDM superchannel systems with 4-, 16-, 64- and 256-QAM formats and polarization division multiplexing (PDM) are numerically investigated against various impairments. The results show that SCFDM superchannel outperforms its MC counterpart against finite DAC&ADC resolution and fiber nonlinearities, while suffers more penalty when very large dispersion or laser phase noise exists. Abstract:In order to raise the performance of optical communication systems, it is imperative mainly to increase the number of available users while decreasing the bit error rate (BER) in the required spectral width. This can be challenging in optical multiplexing systems including incoherent optical code division multiplexing (OCDMA). In this respect, an interesting two-dimensional hybrid spectral/spatial OCDMA system using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology based on successive weight (SW) coding has been investigated. Using the zero cross-correlation (ZCC) feature, the novel approach declined the effect of phase-induced intensity noise (PIIN), and multi-user interference (MUI) at the receiver has been fully eradicated. When compared to systems with Modified Double Weight (MDW), Flexible Cross Correlation (FCC), and two-dimensional hybrid Flexible Cross-Correlation - Modified Double Weight 2D-MDW/FCC codes, numerical findings demonstrate that our proposed system is more efficient, increasing the number of simultaneous users to 350, and achieving a higher overall transfer rate towards 1.5 Tb/s under the required optical communication conditions.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of free space optical (FSO) communication that incorporates the orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) system with differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) modulation scheme. FSO has become a significant area of research in the optical communication field due to efficient communication systems with higher data transmission rates and lower energy requirements. While transmitting signals through free space, the efficiency of the system is constantly compromised by atmospheric turbulence. In this research, the Gamma-Gamma fading model is considered to incorporate atmospheric turbulence which offers better protection against signal fading and scintillation. Convolutional coding is introduced as the forward error correction (FEC) code with the OFDM technique to ensure better and easier encoding of the signal. The system performance is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER). All complex calculations and final result are computed with the help of a hyper-geometrical function, Meijer G. Final results are obtained in graphical form with the help of MATLAB software. System performance is analyzed in terms of BER by varying different system's parameters including the number of OFDM sub-carrier and link distance. Significant amount of coding gain almost 32 dB was found at a BER of 10 –9 , when the system link length is 2000 m and the refractive index structure parameter is 10 –14 m −2/3

Abstract:One of advantages of OFDM transmission technique is that it has the inherent flexibility to adapt the modulation scheme on each subcarrier according to the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio on the subcarrier, leading to an adaptive OFDM (AOFDM) system. We proposed a coded AOFDM system in time-varying channel. In the proposed system, by choosing an optimal M-QAM modulation scheme used by a subcarrier upon the instantaneous channel knowledge, we will extensively investigate the bit-error-rate (BER) performances of AOFDM systems with different vehicle speeds, modulation schemes and bit rates under Rayleigh fading channels.

Abstract:In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing relying on subcarrier index modulation (OFDM-SIM), the information is conveyed by both the indices of the activated subcarriers and the conventional amplitude-phase modulated (APM) symbols. It has been shown that OFDM-SIM is capable of striking a tradeoff between the attainable spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). In order to further increase the EE of the OFDM-SIM system, while potentially increasing its SE, we propose a compressed sensing (CS)-assisted signaling strategy for the family of OFDM-SIM systems. Correspondingly, we first consider the joint maximum likelihood detection of the CS-assisted index-modulated (CSIM) and of the classic APM symbols, despite its high complexity. Then, we propose a low complexity detection algorithm, which is termed as the iterative residual check (IRC)-based detector. This is based on the greedy pursuit concept of CS, which makes locally optimal choices at each step. Finally, both analytical and simulation results are provided for characterizing the attainable system performance of our proposed OFDM-CSIM system. We demonstrate that in comparison to the conventional OFDM-SIM system, the proposed OFDM-CSIM arrangement is capable of achieving both a higher SE as well as an increased EE. We also show that the diversity gain provided by the OFDM-CSIM system is much higher than that of the OFDM-SIM system. Furthermore, our investigation of the detection performance shows that the proposed IRC detector is capable of providing an attractive detection performance at a low complexity.

Abstract:The performance of spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) in optical communication systems is investigated considering the impact of fiber nonlinearities. Relative to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), sub-carriers within SEFDM signals are packed closer at a frequency spacing less than the symbol rate. In order to recover the data, a specially designed sphere decoding detector is used at the receiver end to compensate for the self-created inter carrier interference encountered in SEFDM signals. Our research demonstrated the benefits of the use of sphere decoding in SEFDM and also demonstrates the performance improvement of long-haul optical communication systems using SEFDM compared to the use of conventional OFDM, when fiber nonlinearities are considered. Different modulation formats ranging from 4QAM to 32QAM are studied and it is shown that, for the same spectral efficiency and information rate, SEFDM signals allow a significant increase in the transmission distance compared to conventional OFDM signals.
Performance evaluation for OFDM and SC-FDE systems with high power amplifier

Abstract:We utilize new performance criteria to evaluate performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier modulation with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE), which is described as the required ratio of average transmitted energy per bit to power spectral density of noise at a certain bit error rate (BER). The criteria takes not only received BER performance into account, but the power loss caused by input power back off (IBO) that depends on the requirement of adjacent channel interference (ACI) at transmitter. Simulation results indicate that IBO for unique-word-aided SC-FDE is about 4 dB lower than that for OFDM and pilot-aided SC-FDE to keep ACI below −30dB. Under the new performance criteria, although OFDM system has poorer performance in static and slow dispersive fading channel, it has advantages over SC-FDE systems especially in fast dispersive fading channels.

Abstract:In the multi-paths environment,since the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) system may be severely degraded by the sub-carriers in deep fading,powerful error-correcting codes have to be applied to OFDM.This paper presents a novel quasi-cyclic low density parity check(QC-LDPC) coded OFDM system.In this system,the redundant bits of codeword are mapped to higher-order constellation,and a group shuffled message passing scheduling is used in the iterative decoding.According to the mapping scheme,the QC-LDPC code is optimized by density evolution based on group shuffled message passing with Gaussian approximation.Simulation results show that the proposed system can achieve better error rate performance and faster decoding convergence than conventional approaches on both additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels.

Abstract:Spatial modulation (SM) is a promising single frequency-radio (RF) large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique which can strike an attractive tradeoff between spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of a wireless network. Recently, a novel technique termed as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) emerges, where the SM principle is applied to OFDM subcarriers. It is revealed that OFDM-IM has the potential to outperform classical OFDM in terms of uncoded bit error rate (BER). In this paper, the EE of OFDM-IM with finite-alphabet input is analyzed from an information-theoretic perspective. Based on the analytical expression, the optimal strategy in maximizing the EE of OFDM-IM is proposed, which involves the optimal subcarrier grouping approach as well as the optimal selection of the number of active subcarriers. Monte-Carlo simulations validate the analysis.

Abstract:The performance of code-division multiple access (CDMA) as a multiple-access technique for optical wireless communications is evaluated. The information data is modulated through dual-amplitude pulse interval modulation (DAPIM). Optical orthogonal code is used as the signature sequence. The upper bound and lower bound on the exact probability of errors per slot and per packet are derived in the presence of ambient background noise. Abstract:The performance of dual-carrier 400G solutions based on three high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats (8/16/32-QAM) is investigated on the same platform. We first study the benefit and penalty differences of gray and differential coding, and then experimentally compare OSNR sensitivities and transmission performance using flexible transceiver configuration and the same erbium-doped fiber amplifiers-only standard single-mode fiber link. Experimental results show the implementation penalties are 1.85 dB for 42-GBd polarization multiplexed (PM)-8QAM, which is 1 and 1.5 dB better than 32-GBd PM-16QAM and 25-GBd PM-32QAM at 5.92-dB Q2-factor (corresponding to a bit error rate of 2.4E-2), respectively. It is also found that maximum reaches of 2460 km for 42.6-GBd PM-8QAM, 1640 km for 32-GBd 16QAM, and 820 km for 25-GBd PM-32QAM are achieved. Furthermore, the performances of cascaded multimodulus algorithm and decision-directed least mean square (DD-LMS) algorithms are also compared. The improvement by addition of one sample/symbol-based DD-LMS digital filter is investigated as well.

Abstract:In an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, channel impairments, such as residual chromatic dispersion, residual synchronization error, and clock frequency offset, induce phase shifts over subcarriers. We propose a method of using image processing for phase channel estimation with negligible overhead, which is applicable to various subcarrier modulation formats. We conduct the experiment of 32-, 40-, and 48-Gbit/s direct detection optical OFDM with 16QAM, 32QAM, and 64QAM subcarrier modulation and simulation of 112-Gb/s coherent optical OFDM to verify this method and compare the results with those of the conventional method. Then, we investigate the effects of the numbers of required test phases and OFDM symbols with experimental data. We also present an approach of removing the inner part of constellation points to reduce the complexity.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a recently developed multi-carrier multi-slot transmission scheme for wireless communications in high-mobility environments. In this paper, the error performance of coded OTFS modulation over high-mobility channels is investigated. We start from the study of conditional pairwise-error probability (PEP) of the OTFS scheme, based on which its performance upper bound of the coded OTFS system is derived. Then, we show that the coding improvement for OTFS systems depends on the squared Euclidean distance among codeword pairs and the number of independent resolvable paths of the channel. More importantly, we show that there exists a fundamental trade-off between the coding gain and the diversity gain for OTFS systems, i.e., the diversity gain of OTFS systems improves with the number of resolvable paths, while the coding gain declines. Furthermore, based on our analysis, the impact of channel coding parameters on the performance of the coded OTFS systems is unveiled. The error performance of various coded OTFS systems over high-mobility channels is then evaluated. Simulation results demonstrate a significant performance improvement for OTFS modulation over the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation over high-mobility channels. Analytical results and the effectiveness of the proposed code design are also verified by simulations with the application of both classical and modern codes for OTFS systems.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) is a recently developed transmission technique that extends the principle of spatial modulation to OFDM subcarriers. In this paper, the performance of OFDM-IM is studied in terms of the achievable rate assuming an M-ary constellation and that channel state information is available at the receiver. A closed-form lower bound is derived, based on which an interleaved grouping method is proposed for the use of subcarriers. In comparison with the existing grouping method, the proposed one can better benefit from the diversity effects over frequency-selective fading channels, especially when the spacing of any two subcarriers within a subcarrier group is larger than the coherence bandwidth. Through numerical results, it is revealed that OFDM-IM with interleaved grouping outperforms classical OFDM for small M and certain ranges of signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, the effects of modulation types on the performance of OFDM-IM are studied. It is found that the superiority of OFDM-IM over classical OFDM is greater for phase-shift keying than for quadrature amplitude modulation.
