Abstract:The self-Kerr-nonlinearity of a four-levelN-type atomic system is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The self-Kerr-nonlinear coefficient n(2) of the probe beam is greatly enhanced near atomic resonance, and can be dramatically modified by changing the switching laser power. With an increasing switching laser power, the slope of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient n(2) around the atomic resonance changes from negative to positive, and the value of n(2) varies from similar to-4 x 10(-6) to 4 x 10(-6) cm(2)/W at certain near-resonant probe frequency detunings. Such controllable Kerr nonlinearity can find applications in optoelectronic devices, such as all-optical switching and logic gates.

Abstract:The self-Kerr-nonlinearity of a four-level $\mathsf{N}$-type atomic system is studied both experimentally and theoretically. Abstract:We theoretically investigate nonlinear effects such as four- wave mixing (FWM) and bistability in a cavity electromechanical system based on the electromagnetically induced transparency effect. We show that the FWM can be resonantly enhanced under conditions of reduced linear absorption. We also demonstrate that bistable behavior of the mean intracavity photon number can appear in this system. The system may have potential applications in communication networks for frequency conversion. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose a method to study the quantum nonlinearity and observe the multiphoton transitions in a multiatom cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) system. We show that by inducing simultaneously destructive quantum interference for the single-photon and two-photon excitations in the CQED system, it is possible to observe the direct three-photon excitation of the higher-order ladder states of the CQED system. We report an experiment with cold Rb atoms confined in an optical cavity and demonstrate such interference control of the multiphoton excitations of the CQED system. The observed nonlinear excitation of the CQED ladder states agrees with a theoretical analysis based on a fully quantized treatment of the CQED system, but disagrees with the semiclassical analysis of the CQED system. Thus it represents a direct observation of the quantum nature of the multiatom CQED system and opens new ways to explore quantum nonlinearity and its applications in quantum optical systems in which multiple absorbers or emitters are coupled with photons in confined cavity structures.

Abstract:We report an experimental observation of all-optical switching in an N-type atom-cavity system with a rubidium atomic vapor cell inside an optical ring cavity. Both absorptive and dispersive switching can be realized on dark- or bright-polariton peaks by a weak switching laser beam (with the extinction ratio better than 20:1). The switching mechanism can be explained as the combination of quantum interference and intracavity dispersion properties.

Abstract:We explore the high-density, nonlinear regime of atom-cavity coupling for a gas of three-level atoms at high temperature inside an optical cavity, interacting with the cavity field and a strong driving field. We find a region of parameters where the two side peaks in the transmission spectrum which, in the linear regime, are associated with “bright polaritons” split into two pairs of peaks. Experimental results are presented along with a theoretical model that indicates that this phenomenon is unique to the three-level system in the large Dopplerbroadening regime.

Abstract:We study nonlinear optical behaviors of a ladder-type four-level cold atomics,where a radio-frequency field couples upper two-folded levels and double dark resonances can arise.Using appropriately chosen parameters,the system will show the transition between the normal chromatic dispersion and the abnormal chromatic dispersion.Changing the intensities of the coupling field and radio-frequency field can manipulate the shift between the subluminal and the superluminal.

Abstract:We study atomic coherence and interference in four-level atoms confined in an optical cavity and explores the interplay between cavity QED and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The destructive interference can be induced in the coupled cavity-atom system with a free-space control laser tuned to the normal mode resonance and leads to suppression of the normal mode excitation. Then by adding a pump laser coupled to the four-level atoms from free space, the control-laser induced destructive interference can be reversed and the normal mode excitation is restored. When the free-space control laser is tuned to the atomic resonance and forms a.-type EIT configuration with the cavity-atom system, EIT is manifested as a narrow transmission peak of a weak probe laser coupled into the cavity mode. With the free-space pump laser driving the cavity-confined atoms in a four-level configuration, the narrow transmission peak of the cavity EIT can be split into two peaks and the dressed intra-cavity dark states are created analogous to the dressed states in free space. We report experimental studies of such coherently coupled cavity-atom system realized with cold Rb atoms confined in an optical cavity and discuss possible applications in quantum nonlinear optics and quantum information science.

Abstract:Using semi-classical theory, we study a transient behavior in N-type four-level atoms with coherent system. The theoretical analysis show that the nonlinear absorption for the probe light in the coherent atoms increases from zero to the steady state through a relaxation oscillation process when signal light is switched on. Our results will provide benefits for design of absorptive switching.

Abstract:We study the polariton resonances with the five-level M-type atoms inside an optical cavity through the observation of the cavity transmission spectrum. The ultranarrow peaks associated with the dark-state polaritons in the system can be achieved by adjusting three coupling fields. Simple theory analysis and numerical simulations are also presented.

Abstract:With the experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and the fast development of the studies on nonlinear effects in BEC atomic matter waves, a new branch of atom optics,“nonlinear atom optics”,had been formed, and has been obtained a series of significant experimental progresses. In this lecture, the study content of nonlinear atom optics and their experimental results and recent progress are introduced in some detail, which includes atomic solitons, four-wave mixing, slow light group-velocity and superluminal light, superfluid and vortex, Josephson effect and phase-coherent amplification of atomic matter waves, and so on.

Abstract:Taking the intensity-dependent coupling between atoms and cavity mode into account, we investigate a system consisting of N homogeneously broadened two-level atoms interacting with the field inside a single-mode Fabry–Perot cavity containing a nonlinear Kerr-like medium. We derive the steady-state bistable behaviour of the system, and further analyse in details the influence of several critical parameters on the bistable behaviour.

Abstract:We have experimentally realized a white light cavity (WLC) in a wide range of the cavity input field's intensity in an N-type atomic system. As the linear and nonlinear dispersion can be tuned conveniently, for different cavity input field's intensity, the condition of WLC can be satisfied. In our experiment, the WLC with broad linewidth of about 100MHz can be achieved with the cavity input field's intensity from a few μW to dozens of mW. This can be applied in the gravitation wave detectors, pulse shaping, nonlinear spectroscopy, atom and ion cooling, etc.

Abstract:The quantum interference is studied in a spontaneous emission of a four-level atom driven by three coherent fields. Deriving the equation of motion in the interaction picture we obtain the susceptibility. It is shown the susceptibility is different from the conventional nonlinear optics. The atom exhibits strong nonlinear effects when the spontaneous is at resonance, though it is weak. We can apply this new phenomenon to many fields such as making quantum device, detecting weak signal and processing quantum information.

Abstract:We report on an all-optical switching in a double ∧ four-level atom-cavity system both theoretically and experimentally. In this system, an extra coherence between two ground states is induced by two coupling lasers, thus the loss of the cavity field decreases. Then, we can use one weak field to control another weak field at low light levels. Compared to the three-level atom-cavity system, the power of the switching laser can be much weaker in the four-level atom-cavity system.
Enhancing Light-Atom Interactions via Atomic Bunching

Abstract:There is a broad interest in enhancing the strength of light-atom interactions to the point where injecting a single photon induces a nonlinear material response. Here, we show theoretically that sub-Doppler-cooled, two-level atoms that are spatially organized by weak optical fields give rise to a nonlinear material response that is greatly enhanced beyond that attainable in a homogeneous gas. Specifically, in the regime where the intensity of the applied optical fields is much less than the off-resonant saturation intensity, we show that the third-order nonlinear susceptibility scales inversely with atomic temperature and, due to this scaling, can be two orders of magnitude larger than that of a homogeneous gas for typical experimental parameters. As a result, we predict that spatially bunched two-level atoms can exhibit single-photon nonlinearities. Our model is valid for all atomic temperature regimes and simultaneously accounts for the back-action of the atoms on the optical fields. Our results agree with previous theoretical and experimental results for light-atom interactions that have considered only a limited range of temperatures. For lattice beams tuned to the low-frequency side of the atomic transition, we find that the nonlinearity transitions from a self-focusing type to a self-defocusing type at a critical intensity. We also show that higher than third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities are significant in the regime where the dipole potential energy is on the order of the atomic thermal energy. We therefore find that it is crucial to retain high-order nonlinearities to accurately predict interactions of laser fields with spatially organized ultracold atoms. The model presented here is a foundation for modeling low-light-level nonlinear optical processes for ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Abstract:We report a theoretical study of linear and nonlinear susceptibilities of Raman transition in a Λ-type three-level atomic system. In the Raman transition, if t he population of atoms is all prepared in the ground state which interacts with the control light, the linear susceptibility equals zero, while the third-order nonlinear susceptibility does not equal zero. Abstract:Abstract The phenomenon of “dark resonances” is a well-known concept in quantum optics and laser spectroscopy. As a general rule, interactions involving in such a “dark state” lead to multiple quantum superposition states that interact coherently and are undesirable. In this paper, two types nonlinear interaction in an atomic cavity, namely the nested and cascaded interactions, are theoretically analyzed how the dark resonances form the dark state peak to modulate the vacuum Rabi splitting (VRS) and optical bistability (OB) behavior. In both the zero- and high order modes, there are four VRS peaks generated in the nested interaction and three in the cascade interaction. Dark resonance can modulate not only the peak number of VRS, but also the OB thresholds. It is found that dark state can determine the asymmetric OB distribution of nested type and symmetric OB distribution of cascade type. Besides that, the distinctive OB thresholds in two kinds of interaction also be studied. The observations not only conceptually extend the conventional “dark resonances” phenomenon, but also opens the door for a variety of new applications in tunable all-optical switch and quantum communication.

Abstract:Intense laser technologies generate light with unprecedented and growing intensities. The possibility emerges that a nucleus responds nonlinearly to an intense light field, pointing to an emerging research area of nuclear nonlinear optics. Here we consider two-photon and three-photon absorption (with subsequent disintegration) processes of the deuteron, the simplest and the most fundamental nontrivial nucleus, as prototypes of nuclear nonlinear optical effects. Novel observable effects are predicted. Two-photon and three-photon absorptions are shown to lead to remarkably different angular distributions compared to one-photon absorption. Absorption rates are calculated supporting the feasibility of near-future experimental realization. This work paves a way to the emerging field of nuclear nonlinear optics.
