Abstract:In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) embedded between buffer layer and active layer and between active layer and cathode could significantly improve the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). The device was based on the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CQDs/P3HT:PC 61 BM/CQDs/Al architecture. The power conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells with P3HT:PC 61 BM as active layer increased from 3.18 to 4.31%. And the results show that dual-interface modification of CQDs enables to enhance the electron mobility and hole mobility simultaneously which may be caused by improvement of contact property. In addition, CQDs shown the luminescent down-shifting effect, which was conducive to increase the light conversion of near-ultraviolet and blue-violet portions of sunlight, resulting in enhanced light capture capability of devices. This study provides a simple way to improve PSCs performance.

Abstract:In this study, we report a facile and efficient method using supercritical (SC) CO2 to help a p-type conducting polymer, conjugated polymer MDMO-PPV wrapping on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). One-dimensional CNTs were periodically decorated with the congeries of MDMO-PPV molecular chains forming functional nanohybrid structures. The solubility and light emission of the hybrid MDMO-PPV/CNTs can be controlled by varying SC CO2 pressure. Using FT-IR, we can observe there exists chemical interaction between MDMO-PPV and CNTs, and the interaction not only bestowed CNTs desired solubility but also added functionality of light emission to CNTs. The fluorescence spectroscopy of the MDMO-PPV/CNTs shows their light emission is strongly depend on solvent. For DMSO as the solvent, the higher SC CO2 pressure ensures the excellent dispersion and solubility of MDMO-PPV/CNTs, and accordingly causes the light quenching of the hybrid. For DMAc as the solvent, the enhanced emission light can be observed from the MDMO-PPV/CNTs, especially at higher SC CO2 pressure. We anticipate this work opens a gateway for making use of SC CO2 to help functionalize CNTs with conjugated polymer for use in polymer solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and others.

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising materials for polymer-nanocrystal hybrid solar cells (HSCs). The aim of this review article is to present a comprehensive and current overview of inorganic QDs and their applications in HSCs. Fundamental properties of QDs are first illustrated. And then recent studies that have been done to elucidate charge dynamics of QDs and improve hybrid device performance are summarised and discussed in detail. Finally, an outlook is presented considering current existing challenges in HSCs.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:CdSe/ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) were efficiently tethered onto polyamidoamine dendrimer-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by covalent linkage and mercapto-mediated assembly. The obtained MWCNT-QD hybrids were both photophysically and morphologically characterized. The QDs are well-distributed on single nanotube surface in high density and the assembly of QDs onto MWCNTs does not change the fluorescence emission wavelength of QDs but significantly decreases the emission density. Cytotoxicity of MWCNT-QD hybrids to HeLa cells and their fluorescence property in living cell system were evaluated in detail. The hybrids show a little effect on cell viability even at very high concentration (100μgmL−1). Moreover, they possess intense red fluorescence signal under optical fluorescence microscopy and good fluorescence stability over 72-h exposure in living cell system.
One-Pot Synthesis of Semiconducting Quantum Dots-Organic Linker-Carbon Nanotubes for Potential Applications in Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

Abstract:Materials and composites with the ability to convert light into electricity are essential for a variety of applications, including solar cells. The development of materials and processes needed to boost the conversion efficiency of solar cell materials will play a key role in providing pathways for dependable light to electric energy conversion. Here, we show a simple, single-step technique to synthesize photoactive nanocomposites by coupling carbon nanotubes with semiconducting quantum dots using a molecular linker. We also discuss and demonstrate the potential application of nanocomposite for the fabrication of bulk heterojunction solar cells. Cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) were attached to multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic-3, 4, 9, 10-dianhydride (PTCDA) as a molecular linker through a one-step synthetic route. Our investigations revealed that PTCDA tremendously boosts the density of QDs on MWCNT surfaces and leads to several interesting optical and electrical properties. Furthermore, the QD-PTCDA-MWCNTs nanocomposites displayed a semiconducting behavior, in sharp contrast to the metallic behavior of the MWCNTs. These studies indicate that, PTCDA interfaced between QDs and MWCNTs, acted as a molecular bridge which may facilitate the charge transfer between QDs and MWCNTs. We believe that the investigations presented here are important to discover simple synthetic routes for obtaining photoactive nanocomposites with several potential applications in the field of opto-electronics as well as energy conversion devices.

Abstract:A novel nanocomposite of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and TiO2 nanotubes was fabricated and its enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties were demonstrated. Carbon quantum dots were obtained by electrochemical-etching graphite electrodes and TiO2 nanotubes arrays were prepared by anodization methods. Subsequently, CQDs were assembled on the surface of vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (CQDs/TiO2 nanotubes) and the as-prepared samples were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic measurements. XPS measurement shows the presence of carbon species which come from CQDs. A red shift of light absorption edge and more absorption in the visible light region were observed for the resulting samples from the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. An enhanced photocurrent and photopotential were demonstrated for the CQDs sensitized TiO2 nanotubes under visible light irradiation and the photocurrent density was 2.7 times larger than that of pristine TiO2 nanotubes. A solar cell was fabricated for further verifying the sensitization of CQDs over TiO2 nanotubes. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of CQDs/TiO2 nanotubes towards the degradation of methylene blue was demonstrated and about 14% enhanced degradation efficiency was obtained with the presence of CQDs. This work developed a simple method to fabricate CQDs and demonstrated the introduction of CQDs to be a new approach for improving the utilization of visible light for TiO2 nanotube arrays.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), have unique quantum confinement effects, tunable bandgap and luminescence property, with a wide range of potential applications such as optoelectronic and biomedical areas. However, GQDs usually have a strong tendency toward aggregation especially in making solid films, which will degrade their optoelectronic properties, for example, causing undesired fluorescence quenching. Here, we designed a composite film by embedding GQDs in a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) matrix through hydrogen bonding with well-preserved fluorescence, with a small addition of acid for compensating the poor conductivity of PVP. As a multifunctional solid coating on carbon nanotube/silicon (CNT/Si) solar cells, the photon down-conversion by GQDs and the PVP anti-reflection layer for visible light lead to enhanced external quantum efficiency (by 12.34% in the ultraviolet (UV) range) and cell efficiency (up to 14.94%). Such advanced optical managing enabled by low-cost, carbon-based quantum dots, as demonstrated in our results, can be applied to more versatile optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices based on perovskites, organic and other materials.

Abstract:Quantum dots with unique optical and chemical properties show great potential applications in biology and chemical and medical science. Nevertheless, their practical applications in various fields are greatly limited due to the presence of hydrophobic organic surfaces. In this paper, we report a simple and effective method based on ligand exchange and proton donor-receptor reaction to prepare ultrastable and amphiphilic quantum dots having bilayer ligands with ultidentate structure, which provide active sites for subsequent functional conjugation. Our results show that these quantum dots exhibit monodispersity, excellent stability and solvent-free fluidity. In addition, they maintain their optical properties in a chemical environment due to the large amount of amphiphilic amine salts as ligands, which also endow quantum dots with lower cytotoxicity and higher antibacterial activity. The synthesis strategy in this study provides a new insight into the design and fabrication of promising multifunctional materials for biology, medicine, and energy and display technologies.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated an enhanced performance of polymer solar cells by incorporating functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) decorated with CdSe/ZnS core–shell colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) into copolymers of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as active layer. Short-circuit current density and power conversion efficiency of the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM:(CdSe/ZnS-SWCNTs)/Al solar cells can be enhanced by more than 31 and 23 %, respectively, as compared with the control device ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM/Al. This enhancement is due to the high electron-transporting ability of SWCNTs and the increased absorption of CdSe/ZnS CQD in visible region. It shows an applicable way to improve the efficiency of polymer solar cells by incorporating suitable quantity of CQDs-decorated SWCNTs with suitable kinds of CQDs and suitable acid treatment to the SWCNTs.
Click multiwalled carbon nanotubes: A novel method for preparation of carboxyl groups functionalized carbon quantum dots

Abstract:As potential alternatives to conventional semiconductor quantum dots, fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have received increasing research attention in biomedical fields owing to their splendid advantages of low cytotoxicity, strong fluorescence and excellent water dispersion. However, the preparation procedures of CQDs with designable chemical properties and functions are complicated and low efficient. In this work, we developed a facile, economical and straightforward strategy to prepare CQDs by a one-step thiol-ene click reaction between multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and thiomalic acid (TA). The successful synthesis of CQDs was confirmed by a series of characterization data. The results manifested that CQDs were well combined with TA through surface thiol-ene click chemistry. In addition, the optical property is also desirable, the maximum emission wavelength was located in 500 nm and CQDs still could emit strong blue fluorescent light after irradiation with UV irradiation for 3 h. Besides, the pH value makes no significant changes for fluorescence emission wavelength of CQDs and CQDs can emit strongest fluorescence in weak acid solution. Furthermore, CQDs could be internalized by cells and show great cell dyeing performance and low cytotoxicity. All these features imply that TA functionalized CQDs possess great potential for biological imaging. The one-step thiol-ene click strategy provided a novel tool to prepare functionalized CQDs with great potential for biomedical applications.
A Facile Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of Graphene Quantum Dots for Organic Solar Cell Efficiency Improvement

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials have successively remained at the forefront of different research fields and applications for years. Understanding of low-dimension carbon material family (CNT, fullerenes, graphene, and graphene quantum dots) has arrived at a certain extension. In this report, graphene quantum dots were synthesized from graphene oxide with a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Compared with conventional time-consuming hydrothermal routes, this novel method requires a much shorter time, around ten minutes. Successful formation of quantum dots derived from graphene sheets was verified with microscopic and spectroscopic characterization. Nanoparticles present a diameter of about 2-8 nm, blue emission under ultraviolet excitation, and good dispersion in polar solvents and can be collected in powder form. The synthesized graphene quantum dots were utilized as a hole transport layer in organic solar cells to enhance the cell quantum efficiency. Such quantum dots possess energy levels (Ec and Ev) relevant to HOMO and LUMO levels of conductive polymers. Mixing P3HT:PCBM polymer and graphene quantum dots of sufficient extent notably helps reduce potential difference at interfaces of the two materials. Overall efficiency consequently advances to 1.43%, an increase of more than 44% compared with pristine cells (0.99%).

Abstract:A complex quantum dot circuit based on a clean and suspended carbon nanotube embedded in a circuit quantum electrodynamic (cQED) architecture is a very attractive platform to investigate a large spectrum of physics phenomena ranging from qubit physics to nanomechanics. We demonstrate a carbon nanotube transfer process allowing us to integrate clean carbon nanotubes into complex quantum dot circuits inside a cQED platform. This technique is compatible with various contacting materials such as superconductors or ferromagnets. This makes it suitable for hybrid quantum devices. Our results are based on eight different devices demonstrating the robustness of this technique.

Abstract:A new method to enhance the stability of quantum dots (QDs) in aqueous solution by encapsulating them with conducting polymer polyaniline was reported. The polyaniline-encapsulated QDs were then decorated onto graphene through π-π interactions between graphene and conjugated polymer shell of QDs, forming stable polyaniline/QD/graphene hybrid. A testing electronic device was fabricated using the hybrid in order to investigate the photoinduced charge transfer between graphene and encapsulated QDs within the hybrid. The charge transfer mechanism was explored through cyclic voltammetry and spectroscopic studies. The hybrid shows a clear response to the laser irradiation, presenting a great advantage for further applications in optoelectronic devices.
Synthesis of Single-layer Graphene-nanocomposite directly from graphene oxide

Abstract:Assembly of semiconductor nanoparticles, such as quantum dots (QDs), on matrices has been extensively studied for their promising optoelectronic applications [1-7]. To enhance the photocurrent generated by these semiconductor-matrices systems, it is essential to retard the recombination of electron-hole species in the semiconductors by molecular electron-relay semiconductor structures or efficient electron-transport matrices, such as the conductive polymer films or carbon nanotubes (CNT) [3-7]. The superior electrical conductivity and flexible atom-thin two-dimensional feature of graphene would make it an excellent electron-transport matrix. Herein, we report the synthesis of graphenequantum dots (G-QD) nanocomposite directly from graphene oxide by a facile one-step reaction. Comparing with CNT, the large 2D flexible atom-thin layer of graphene makes it easier to control the distribution of CdS on graphene sheet and to fabricate future optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In situ growth of ZnO quantum dots (QDs) on the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) was realized via a mild solution-process method, and their application in field emission device was demonstrated. High resolution transmission electron microscopy observation revealed the conjugation between ZnO QDs and MWCNTs. Field emission arrays based on ZnO QD/MWCNT hybrid nanocomposite exhibited significantly improved luminance intensity and emitting dot density when compared with the MWCNT-only arrays. It is proposed that the introduction of the ZnO QDs on the sidewall of MWCNTs can enhance the tunnelling probability, and result in the improved field emission property for the hybrid emitters.
