Abstract:In visible light communication (VLC) system, the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely used to achieve a high data rate transmission. However, OFDM will cause high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the VLC system. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new interleaved Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) method. We compare the interleaved DFT-S technique to other PAPR reduction techniques, such as Clipping OFDM and conventional DFT-S. The experimental results show that interleaved DFT-S achieve FEC threshold for an overall 2.0Gb/s 32QAM signal over the 1.05m transmission. In addition, interleaved DFT-S presents significant PAPR reduction, low complexity and optimal BER performance, when compared to other techniques.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems are favoured for numerous applications due to their extensive bandwidth and resilience to electromagnetic interference. This study delineates various constructions of Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM) approaches employed in VLC systems. Various factors are elaborated within this context to ascertain a more effective O-OFDM approach, including constellation size, data arrangement and spectral efficiency, power efficiency, computational complexity, bit error rate (BER), and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This paper seeks to assess these approaches' BER and PAPR performance across varying modulation orders. Regrettably, in VLC systems based on OFDM methodology, the superposition of multiple subcarriers results in a high PAPR. Therefore, this study aims to diminish the PAPR in VLC systems, enhancing system performance. We propose a non-distorting PAPR reduction technique, namely the Vandermonde-Like Matrix (VLM) precoding technique. The suggested technique is implemented across various O-OFDM approaches, including DCO-OFDM, ADO-OFDM, ACO-OFDM, FLIP-OFDM, ASCO-OFDM, and LACO-OFDM. Notably, this method does not affect the system's data rate because it does not require the mandatory transmission of side information. Furthermore, this technique can decrease the PAPR without impacting the system's BER performance. This study compares the proposed PAPR reduction technique against established methods documented in the literature to evaluate their efficacy and validity rigorously.

Influence of OVSF Code on Peak-to-average Power Ratio in Code-Division Multiple Access Systems

Abstract:To reduce the signal peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) in code-division multiple access(CDMA) system,the effects of orthogonal variable spreading factor(OVSF) codes on PAPR at the down link transmitter were investigated.The expression of down link signal instantaneous power in CDMA systems was deduced,and the influences of the number of the combined codes with maximum run-length of 8 or longer on PAPR were observed.After the relationship between the maximum run-length of the combined codes and the index of OVSF codes was concluded,the length and the subscript conditions of combined codes with maximum run-length of 8 or longer were obtained,and different OVSF code sets were simulated according to cdma2000 1x physical layer parameters of 3GPP2 standard.Simulation results show that signal PAPR increases with increasing number of combined codes with maximum run-length of 8 or longer,the proposed conditions can provide theoretical foundation for algorithmic design of OVSF assignment with low PAPR for CDMA systems.

Abstract:Light emitting diode (LED) is employed to transmit signals for visible light communication (VLC) systems. Asymmetrically clipped optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) is one of multi-carrier modulations to improve data rates. However, ACO-OFDM signals provide high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and are clipped off to work in a nonlinear LED with a limited range of linearity. In this paper, a non-redundant multi-layer superimposed PAPR reduction approach is proposed for ACO-OFDM VLC systems, where two non-redundant signal streams are superimposed with the ACO-OFDM signal stream for PAPR reduction, requiring no pilot and no side information. A number of multi-layer signals are designed to reduce large-amplitude source signals and enhance small-amplitude source signals. The source signals are not interfered by the designed multi-layer signal streams in frequency domain, as odd subcarriers are occupied by source signals, while even subcarriers are occupied by the designed signals. Simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms a number of existing methods in the literature, and provides performance better than ACO-OFDM with no PAPR reduction, in terms of bit error rate (BER) and complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of PAPR reduction. Abstract:In this paper,the OFDM system which is based on fractional Fourier transform(FRFT) has been introduced,and the function of peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) is achieved.The selected mapping which lowers the PAPR of traditional OFDM system is employed for OFDM systems based on FRFT.Because the density of the signal power is different in different a domain,the PAPR of the signal isn't same.The figures of the complementary cumulative distribution function(CCDF) with different fractional angle have been drawn.Comparing with the system which is based on FFT,simulation results have shown good efficiency of proposed algorithm when the calculation is done in the optimal fractional domain.
Modified PTS-based PAPR reduction for ACO-OFDM in visible light communications

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a modified PTS-based PAPR reduction scheme for ACO-OFDM in VLC systems by exploiting the unoccupied subcarriers to transmit side information. A novel transmitter is presented to apply the PTS technique in ACO-OFDM VLC system without data throughput loss and an original power allocation method is also proposed to mitigate the power efficiency loss induced by the side information signals. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a significant PAPR reduction performance without data throughput loss as well as an improved BER performance when LED nonlinearity exists.

Abstract:One of the primary challenges faced by visible light communication (VLC) systems employing optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This study is dedicated to designing, simulating, and evaluating bit error rate (BER) and PAPR reduction methods tailored for the VLC broadcasting system. The asymmetric clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) scheme is highlighted in this work for its impressive performance. Therefore, the proposed PAPR mitigation methodologies applied to ACO-OFDM. The proposed PAPR reduction strategy involves 5 distinct precoding methodologies. The PAPR was mitigated by 3.485 dB after applying the DST precoding methodology. Still, the WHT precoding methodology can achieve PAPR reduction by 1.131 dB, without BER performance degradation, with respect to the conventional ACO-OFDM system. Furthermore, the work addresses another challenge in VLC systems: the bit error rate (BER). This is accomplished by introducing approaches to Time Domain Noise Cancelation and Frequency Domain Noise Cancelation (FDNC). The BER performance of these 2 receiver models is nearly the same. The simulation results indicate the system performance enhancement after applying noise cancellation approaches by 1.65 dB at the 4-QAM modulation scheme and 2.97 dB at the 1024-QAM modulation scheme. The 16-QAM modulation scheme, after applying DST and WHT methodologies alongside noise cancellation approaches, can enhance both PAPR by 20.83% and 6.76%, but the E b /N 0 performance enhancement by 10.10% and 14.64%, respectively. Additionally, the effectiveness and validity of the proposed schemes are verified by comparing them with relevant literature reviews on PAPR reduction techniques and selecting an optimal choice among them.

Abstract:An optimal bit-and-power allocation (BPA) algorithm for visible light communication-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (VLC-OFDM) system is proposed and demonstrated. It is such notable that the signal noise in VLC-OFDM system is not addition white Gaussian noise and its power changes with the received signal power through experimental measurement. Thus the optimal Hughes-Hartog BPA algorithm based on variable noise power is presented. Compared with the traditional BPA algorithm, the experiment indicates that the proposed optimal BPA algorithm can achieve about 15.9% improvement of data rate for VLC-OFDM system.

Abstract:DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) has been proposed in visible light communication (VLC) to overcome the limited modulation bandwidth of light emitting diode (LED). Due to the implementation of the inverse fast Fourier transform at the DCO-OFDM transmitter, DCO-OFDM suffers from its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which restricts its use in some VLC applications, especially where the optical power efficiency is a crucial requirement. That is because the LEDs used in VLC systems have a limited optical power-current linear range. To this end, a novel discrete Fourier transform spread-optical pulse amplitude modulation (DFTS-OPAM) signal scheme based on the single carrier-interleaved frequency division multiple access (SC-IFDMA) signal is introduced in this paper to address the high PAPR issue of OFDM. DFTS-OPAM is achieved by considering a PAM as an SC-IFDMA data symbol and duplicate the output vector of the fast Fourier transform at the SC-IFDMA transmitter side. Simulation results show that the PAPR of the proposed scheme is 7 dB lower than that of DCO-OFDM. Furthermore, this significant PAPR improvement is experimentally investigated where the practical results show that the proposed scheme can provide more 2.5 dB reduction in the average transmitted power requirement compared to DCO-OFDM and can subsequently increase the maximum achieved distance between the transmitter and the receiver up to 44%.

Abstract:One of major drawbacks of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex(OFDM) technique is the huge dynamic range of signals,which presents a high crest factor during the symbol period and thus degrades the efficiency of the power amplifier.This paper focuses on the Phase Shift Keying(PSK) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulated(QAM) OFDM signal,investigating the crest factor,derivative and coherent time variance of the signal′s envelope properties,deducing the tighter limits of crest factor through the Cumulative Complementary Distribution Function(CCDF) based on level crossing rate theory.The research results are analyzed through computer simulations.

The expression indicated the negative exponential relationship between the PAPR cumulative distribution probability and the PAPR threshold , and it could be the basis to analyze the factors affecting the signal PAPR property. Furthermore , based on the analysis of the signal envelope power and the discovery of the time2frequency relationship in the envelope power ex2 pression , the factors affecting the PAPR property of the signal were studied , and the following conclusions were reached : the PAPR property of OFDM2CDMA signal could be improved by taking the spreading codes with good correlation proper2 ty , but had nothing to do with the type of digital modulation schemes. And it was also concluded that the PAPR of the lightly loaded system was larger than that of the fully loaded system. Simulation results demonstrated the validity of the conclusions of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Visible light communication has been attracted attention because of its ubiquitous and safety. However, faults of LED communication are that the value of optical power shows nonlinear characteristic to input current and the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) characteristic deteriorates. To reduce the PAPR, we propose a PAPR reduction method by applying adaptive clipping with adding a peak mitigate signal. We also propose a performance enhancement by applying Frequency Symbol Spreading (FSS) and Priority Power selection (PPS) to improve the BER performance. With the proposed method, we achieve a significant PAPR reduction as large as 8dB compared with the conventional VLC-OFDM.

Abstract:Discrete-Fourier-transform spread orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM) draws increasing attention by its prominent advantage in low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). DFT-S-OFDM originate from the single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) which is the uplink multiple access scheme for 3GPP LTE. Although DFT-S-OFDM has been introduced to optical communication, detailed discussion on this scheme is still necessary. In this paper, we study the PAPR performance of DFT-S-OFDM in optical transmission system and compare the performance of different subcarrier allocation method. Meanwhile, we propose to utilize interleaved subcarrier allocation and demonstrate that obvious improvement in input power range and BER at high input power will be achieved.

Abstract:Wide usage of Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in visible light communication (VLC) systems aids in sharing immense multimedia files. But, an increase in the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) becomes a setback for OFDM. This paper focuses on PAPR reduction and encrypted image transmission in OFDM-based VLC systems using masking approach. The proposed technique generates a mask with the random sequence from a Pi-based coupled chaotic map (PCCM). The ciphering of the transmitted image data involves twofold administration of the PCCM mask. First, the image data is confused using Arnold's Cat Map (ACM), and then the PCCM mask is applied. For the second time, the PCCM masks are applied on the equal-sized blocks of the subdivided image data at the Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) mapper stage, hence secures the transmission path. The proposed masking scheme frustrates statistical, brute-force and differential attacks and has a large key space of about . The PCCM based masking scheme is able to reduce PAPR from 13.5 dB to 6 dB, with 56% reduction percentile when compared to the normal OFDM system, and the same is validated by Complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF). The decryption quality of the PCCM mask based encryption approach is proven better with high correlation coefficient and output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. This scheme also maintains the condition of the image shared with a Bit error rate (BER) improvement of 1.2 to 1.5 dB compared to the normal OFDM system. This proposed technique is evaluated by simulation experiments.

Abstract:Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA), which combines single carrier modulation with frequency domain equalization, is a promising transmission technique in 3GPP LTE. In this paper, for SC-FDMA signals with localized sub-carrier mapping scheme, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) distribution is analyzed and simulated. It is shown that different modulation schemes will lead to different PAPR of LFDMA signals. In this case, the modulation scheme should be selected carefully so as to make a better tradeoff among PAPR, system performance and spectrum efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a novel OFDM-chirp modulation scheme with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). The OFDM-chirp modulation signaling jointly utilizes the frequency-domain chirp modulation and OFDM signaling technique, which can deal with the disadvantages of traditional OFDM modulation including high PAPR, sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO), poor Doppler tolerance and strong inter-carrier interference (ICI). We also introduce an analytical approach to evaluate the corresponding symbol error rate (SER) under CFO in Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results verify the superiorities of OFDM-chirp modulation signaling over traditional OFDM signaling schemes.

Abstract:This paper explores the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) influence of the base band orthogonal-frequencydivision-multiplexing (OFDM) signal and the multiband orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing ultrawideband (MB-OFDM UWB) signal, and compares the performance of discrete fourier transform spread (DFTspread) scheme with clipping filter (CF) scheme to reducing PAPR in MB-OFDM UWB signal. On this basis, this paper also puts forward a scheme for restraining the influence of high PAPR and frequency selective fading (FSF) in 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) MB-OFDM UWBoF system, which is based on the combination of DFT-spread and pre-compensation. The results of simulation show that this scheme can improve the receiver sensitivity by 3.30 dB after the transmission of 70 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with the bit error rate (BER) of 1.0 x 10-3, which compared with the situation without DFT-spread and pre-compensation.

PAPR Reduction with Pre-chirp Selection for Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing

Abstract:Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a promising new multicarrier technique for high-mobility communications based on discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT). By properly tuning the pre-chirp parameter and the post-chirp parameter in the DAFT, the effective channel in the DAFT domain can completely circumvent path overlap, thereby constituting a full representation of delay-Doppler profile. However, AFDM has a crucial problem of high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), stemming from randomness of modulated symbols. In this letter, a novel algorithm named grouped pre-chirp selection (GPS) is proposed to reduce PAPR by strategically varying the pre-chirp parameter across subcarrier groups. Initially, it is established that key AFDM properties are maintained when implementing GPS. Next, we proceed to detail the operational procedures of the GPS algorithm, elucidating its principle for PAPR reduction and emphasizing its computational efficiency advantages. Finally, simulation results employing the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) validate the effectiveness of the proposed GPS in reducing PAPR.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely studied and adopted in visible-light communication (VLC) systems because of its high spectral efficiency and low-complexity implementation. However, OFDM-based VLC systems suffer from a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), along with the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a subcarrier grouping scheme for an OFDM-based VLC system is proposed. This scheme exploits the property that one LED lamp usually contains multiple independent LED chips. In the proposed scheme, all OFDM signal subcarriers are divided into groups, and each group is transmitted by an individual LED chip while the same receiver structure is maintained. The PAPR is reduced significantly because only some of the subcarriers are located on each LED chip. Hence, the achievable input power can be increased, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a lower bit error rate (BER). Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved by over two orders of magnitude. Moreover, an adaptive switching mechanism is also proposed in this paper, in which a subcarrier grouping scheme is employed adaptively when the required input power is high. Simulation results validate that the proposed mechanism can enhance system robustness significantly.
