Abstract:Recently, remarkable efforts have been made in developing wireless communication systems at ultrahigh data rates, with radio frequency (RF) carriers in the millimeter wave (30-300 GHz) and/or in the terahertz (THz, >300 GHz) bands. Converged technologies combining both the electronics and the photonics show great potential to provide feasible solutions with superior performance compared to conventional RF technologies. However, technical challenges remain to be overcome in order to support high data rates with considerably feasible wireless distances for practical applications, particularly in the THz region. In this work, we present an experimental demonstration of a single-channel THz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system operating at 350 GHz, achieving beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate over a 10-km fiber plus a >20-m wireless link, without using any THz amplifiers. This achievement is enabled by using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal with a probabilistic-shaped 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation format, a pair of highly directive Cassegrain antennas, and advanced digital signal processing techniques. This work pushes the THz RoF technology one step closer to ultrahigh-speed indoor wireless applications and serves as an essential segment of the converged fiber-wireless access networks in the beyond 5G era.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 400 GHz carrier wireless transmission system with real-time capable detection and demonstrate transmission of a 60 Gbit/s signal derived from optical Nyquist channels in a 12.5 GHz ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UD-WDM) grid and carrying QPSK modulation. This is the highest data rate demonstrated for carrier frequencies above 300 GHz and also validates the feasibility of bridging between next generation 100 GbE wired data streams and indoor wireless applications.

Abstract:To accommodate the demand of exponentially increased global wireless data traffic, the prospective data rates for wireless communication in the market place will soon reach 100 Gb/s and beyond. In the lab environment, wireless transmission throughput has been elevated to the level of over 100 Gb/s attributed to the development of photonic-assisted millimeter wave and terahertz (THz) technologies. However, most of recent demonstrations with over 100 Gb/s data rates are based on spatial or frequency division multiplexing techniques, resulting in increased system's complexity and energy consumption. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a single channel 0.4 THz photonic-wireless link achieving a net data rate of beyond 100 Gb/s by using a single pair of THz emitter and receiver, without employing any spatial/frequency division multiplexing techniques. The high throughput up to 106 Gb/s within a single THz channel is enabled by combining spectrally efficient modulation format, ultrabroadband THz transceiver and advanced digital signal processing routine. Besides that, our demonstration from system-wide implementation viewpoint also features high transmission stability, and hence shows its great potential to not only decrease the system's complexity, butalsomeet the requirements of prospective data rates for bandwidth-hungryshort-range wireless applications.

Abstract:THz technology with extremely large bandwidth resources is considered as a promising candidate for future generation wireless systems. Particularly, compared to the electronic approach, the photonic approach exhibits a capability of breaking the electronic bandwidth bottleneck, and hence it has been widely used to develop high speed THz communication systems. In this paper, we present our recent development of photonics-aided 350 GHz transmission of beyond 100 Gbit/s, with a special focus on work of extending the wireless distance.

Abstract:Recently,wireless communication capacity has been witnessing unprecedented growth.Benefits from the optoelectronic components with large bandwidth,photonics-assisted terahertz[THz]communication links have been extensively devel-oped to accommodate the upcoming wireless transmission with a high data rate.However,limited by the available signal-to-noise ratio and THz component bandwidth,single-lane transmission of beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate using a single pair of THz transceivers is still very challenging.In this study,a multicarrier THz photonic wireless communication link in the 300 GHz band is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.Enabled by subcarrier multiplexing,spectrally efficient modu-lation format,well-tailored digital signal processing routine,and broadband THz transceivers,a line rate of 72 Gbit/s over a wireless distance of 30 m is successfully demonstrated,resulting in a total net transmission capacity of up to 202.5 Gbit/s.The single-lane transmission of beyond 200 Gbit/s overall data rate with a single pair of transceivers at 300 GHz is con-sidered a significant step toward a viable photonics-assisted solution for the next-generation information and communi-cation technology[ICT]infrastructure.

Abstract:The increasing demand for wireless video-based interactive and multimedia data services explains why 60-GHz millimeter-wave wireless system is a promising candidate to provide multi-gigabit-per-second wireless services. While attempting to generate and transmit 60 GHz signals in a wireless system cost effectively and increase the spectral efficiency to facilitate multi-gigabit-per-second services, this work reviews three radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems based on optical frequency multiplication (up to 6 times) to reduce the bandwidth requirement of optical transmitters. Additionally, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals with multi-level modulation formats (16 QAM) are utilized to achieve an ultrahigh data rate of 28 Gbps within the 7-GHz license-free band and compensate for an uneven frequency response of 60-GHz RoF systems. Negligible power penalty following 25-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission is observed, capable of significantly extending the service range to various applications within a building or campus.

These approaches can effectively reduce the signal baud rate as well as the required bandwidth for optical and electrical devices. We also investigate the problems, such as wireless multi-path effect due to different wireless transmission distance, existing in the large capacity fiber wireless integration system. We demonstrate these problems can be effectively solved based on advanced digital-signal-processing (DSP) algorithms including classic constant modulus algorithm (CMA). Moreover, based on the combination of these approaches as well as advanced DSP algorithms, we have successfully demonstrated a 400G fiber wireless integration system, which creates a capacity record of wireless delivery and ushers in a new era of ultra-high bit rate (>400Gb/s) optical wireless integration communications at mm-wave frequencies.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast terahertz (THz) photonic wireless communication link in the 350 GHz band with up to 100 Gbit/s data rate, with an emphasis on extending its wireless reach. By combining the techniques of using a cutting-edge narrow-band uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) as the THz photo-mixing emitter, spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, we successfully transmit 25 GBaud/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals (overall 100 Gbit/s data rate) over a 350 GHz wireless link with an extended distance of 2 m. This achievement pushes the accessibility of ultrafast 100 Gbit/s wireless communication beyond the state-of-the-art, and makes 100 Gbit/s ultrafast THz wireless communication systems promising for future smart high speed wireless access services.

Abstract:The broadband penetration and continuing growth of Internet traffic among residential and business customers are driving the migration of today's end user's network access from cable to optical fiber and superbroadband wireless systems The integration of optical and wireless systems operating at much higher carrier frequencies in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) range is considered to be one of the most promising solutions for increasing the existing capacity and mobility, as well as decreasing the costs in next-generation optical access networks. In this paper, several key enabling technologies for very high throughput wireless-over-fiber networks are reviewed, including photonic mm-wave generation based on external modulation or nonlinear effects, spectrum-efficient multicarrier orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing and single-carrier multilevel signal modulation. We also demonstrated some applications in wireless-over-fiber trials using these enabling techniques. The results show that the integrated systems are practical solutions to offer very high throughput wireless to end users in optically enabled wireless access networks.
