Abstract:A 3.125 Gb/s photonic impulse radio ultra-wideband signal is created using the incoherent optical field summation resulting from the cross gain modulation of an uncooled distributed feedback laser injected with an external cavity laser. After 50 km of fiber and wireless transmission over 2.9-3.3-m, successful detection using a digital signal processing receiver is achieved.

Abstract:We present experimental demonstrations of in-building impulse radio (IR) ultra-wideband (UWB) link consisting of 100 m multi mode fiber (MMF) and 4 m wireless transmission at a record 4 Gbps, and a record 8 m wireless transmission at 2.5 Gbps. A directly modulated vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) was used for the generation of the optical signal. 8 m at 2.5 Gbps corresponds to a bit rate--distance product of 20; the highest yet reported for wireless IR-UWB transmission.

Abstract:We propose an approach to generate ultrawideband (UWB) pulses with tunable high-speed modulation based on pulse compression. Flexible generation of up to a record 5 Gbits/s on-off keying impulse radio UWB signals are successfully demonstrated as well. We also investigate 5 Gbits/s on-off keying bit-error-rate (BER) performance after 40 km single mode fiber transmission by employing a digital signal processing receiver, and the BER below forward error correction limit is achieved. Abstract:The generation of photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse signals using an uncooled distributed-feedback laser is proposed. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate bit-for-bit digital signal processing (DSP) bit-error-rate measurements for transmission of a 781.25-Mb/s photonic UWB signal over fiber links. The DSP algorithm is described, the generated UWB signal is shown to comply with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission requirements, and transmission of 1.71times105 UWB bits over fiber is demonstrated without error.

Abstract:In this paper, we comprehensively review our research work on system wide implementation of photonically generated IR-UWB signals based on relaxation oscillations of a semiconductor laser. Firstly, we present our novel approach as a flexible method for photonic generation of high speed impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) signals at 781.25 Mbps with on-off keying (OOK) and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation formats. We further advance the state-of-the-art to include multi-Gigabit IR-UWB signal generation. Both OOK and BPSK signals comply with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation. Secondly, we implement UWB fiber transmission systems and study hybrid fiber-wireless transmission performance at a system level. This is accomplished by employing our digital signal processing (DSP) assisted receiver. The photonic generation method is superior to the state-of-the-art electronic generation method in terms of transmission bit-error rate performance. Moreover, photonic IR-UWB generation is shown to be capable of longer wireless reach due to its lower bandwidth limitation. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the integration of a relaxation oscillations-based UWB photonic generation system into existing wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PON) infrastructure. This provides converged Gigabit indoor wireless and wireline access services.

Abstract:We theoretically analyze the channel capacity of a 5th-order Gaussian pulse-based ultra-wideband (UWB) system and experimentally demonstrate 2 Gbit/s UWB-over-fiber transmission systems incorporating wireless transmission. Both electrical and photonic UWB pulse generation methods are employed and its performance is compared. By utilizing optimum UWB pulse design and employing a digital signal processing (DSP) receiver, a bit-error-rate above the forward error correction (FEC) limit for 8 meters of wireless emission is obtained in our photonic generation UWB system. A noticeable increase in the channel capacity is achieved compared to previously reported results.

Abstract:In this letter, an all-optical incoherent scheme for generation of binary phase-coded ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radio signals is proposed. The generated UWB pulses utilize relaxation oscillations of an optically injected distributed feedback laser that are binary phase encoded (0 and pi) and meet the requirements of Federal Communications Commission regulations. We experimentally demonstrated a 781.25-Mb/s UWB-over-fiber transmission system. A digital-signal-processing-based receiver is employed to calculate the bit-error rate. Our proposed system has potential application in future high-speed UWB impulse radio over optical fiber access networks.

Abstract:The performance of radio-over-fiber optical transmission employing vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), and further wireless transmission, of the two major ultra-wideband (UWB) implementations is reported when operating in the 60-GHz radio band. Performance is evaluated at 1.44 Gbit/s bitrate. The two UWB implementations considered employ dual-carrier modulation orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DCM-OFDM) and binary phase-shift keying impulse radio (BPSK-IR) modulation respectively. Optical transmission distances up to 40 km in standard single-mode fiber and up to 500 m in bend-insensitive single-mode fiber with wireless transmission up to 5 m in both cases is demonstrated with no penalty. A simulation analysis has also been performed in order to investigate the operational limits. The analysis results are in excellent agreement with the experimental work and indicate good tolerance to chromatic dispersion due to the chirp characteristics of electro-optical conversion when a directly-modulated VCSEL is employed. The performance comparison indicates that BPSK-IR UWB exhibits better tolerance to optical transmission impairments requiring lower received optical power than its DCM-OFDM UWB counterpart when operating in the 60-GHz band.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic up-converted 25 Gbit/s fiber-wireless quadrature phase shift-keying (QPSK) data transmission link at the W-band (75-110 GHz). By launching two free-running lasers spaced at 87.5 GHz into a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at the central office, a W-band radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal is generated and distributed to the remote antenna unit (RAU). One laser carries 12.5 Gbaud optical baseband QPSK data, and the other acts as a carrier frequency generating laser. The two signals are heterodyne mixed at a photodetector in the RAU, and the baseband QPSK signal is transparently up-converted to the W-band. After the wireless transmission, the received signal is first down-converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) at 13.5 GHz at an electrical balanced mixer before being sampled and converted to the digital domain. A digital-signal-processing (DSP)-based receiver is employed for offline digital down-conversion and signal demodulation. We successfully demonstrate a 25 Gbit/s QPSK wireless data transmission link over a 22.8 km SSMF plus up to 2.13 m air distance with a bit-error-rate performance below the 2 × 10-3 forward error correction (FEC) limit. The proposed system may have the potential for the integration of the in-building wireless networks with the fiber access networks, e.g., fiber-to-the-building (FTTB).

Abstract:We present a long-distance ultrafast THz photonic-wireless communication system by combining frequency-, polarization- and spatial- division multiplexing techniques. An aggregated net rate of 1.034 Tbit/s over record 100 m at 300 GHz is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:We present a simple architecture for realizing high capacity W-band (75-110 GHz) photonics-wireless system. 42.13 Gbit/s 16QAM-OFDM optical baseband signal is obtained in a seamless 15 GHz spectral bandwidth by using an optical frequency comb generator, resulting in a spectral efficiency of 2.808 bits/s/Hz. Transparent photonic heterodyne up-conversion based on two free-running lasers is employed to synthesize the W-band wireless signal. In the experiment, we program an improved DSP receiver and successfully demonstrate photonics-wireless transmission of 8.9 Gbit/s, 26.7 Gbit/s and 42.13 Gbit/s 16QAM-OOFDM W-band signals, with achieved bit-error-rate (BER) performance below the forward error correction (FEC) limit.
