Abstract:The absorption spectra for overtone and combination bands of SF6 and 238UF6 have been measured using photoacoustic spectroscopy technologies with a CO laser. The band intensity of ν1 + ν2 + ν3 of 238UF6 and 3ν4 of SF6 are reported for the first time as 6.5 ± 1.5 and 5.5 ± 1.5 m/mole, respectively.

Abstract:We present VUV observations of transitions between doubly excited sextet states in O3+, F4+ and Ne5+. Spectra were produced by collisions of an oxygen, uorine and neon beam with a nitrogen gas jet target. Prepared beam-gas experiment yields new and explicit information on doubly core-excited ions. Some observed lines were assigned to the 1s2s2p3 6S-1s2p33s, 3d 6P electric-dipole transitions in O3+, F4+ and Ne5+. Three lines have been reassigned. Present data are the first explicit measurements on transitions between sextet states in boronlike ions by beam-gas spectroscopy.

Abstract:The sensitized dissociation of UF_6 by SF_6 excited with a pulsed CO_2 laser has been investigated in the presence of CO as F atom scavenger.The dissociation yields were examined as a function of CO partial pressure,laser frequency,fluence and the number of laser pulses.The “laser snow”(UF_5)_m and COF_2 were observed in the reaction products.The dissociation rate was first order with respect to the partial pressure of UF_6.The vibrational state densities of SF_6 and UF_6 molecules were calculated using the Whitten-Rabinovitch approximation.The intermolecular V-V energy transfer from excited SF_6 to UF_6 and the mechanism of IR photosensitization of UF_6 were discussed.

Abstract:We present observations of VUV transitions between doubly excited sextet states in O, IV, F V and Ne VI. Spectra were produced by collisions of an O+, (FH)(+) and Ne+ beam with a thin carbon foil target. Some observed lines are assigned to the 1s2s2p(2)3p L-6-1 s2p(3)3p P-6 electric-dipole transitions in 0 IV, F V and Ne VI, and are compared with the results of multi-configuration Hartree-Fock (with QED and higher-order corrections) and multi-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations. 31 new lines have been identified. The sextet systems of boronlike ions are possible candidates for x-ray and VUV lasers.
Reaction of Laser-Ablated Uranium Atoms with CO: Infrared Spectra of the CUO, CUO-, OUCCO, (Η2-C2)uo2, and U(CO)x (x = 1−6) Molecules in Solid Neon

Abstract:Laser-ablated uranium atoms have been reacted with CO molecules during condensation with neon at 4 K. Absorptions at 1047.3 and 872.2 cm(-1) are assigned to the CUO molecule formed from the insertion reaction that requires activation energy. Isotopic substitution shows that the upper band is largely U-C and the lower band mostly U-O in vibrational character. Absorptions at 2051.5, 1361.8, and 841.0 cm(-1) are assigned to the OUCCO molecule, which is formed by the CO addition reaction to CUO and ultraviolet-visible photon-induced rearrangment of the U(CO)(2) molecule. The OUCCO molecule undergoes further photochemical rearrangment to the (C-2)UO2 molecule, which is characterized by symmetric and antisymmetric OUO stretching vibrations at 843.2 and 922.1 cm(-1). The uranium carbonyls U(CO)(x) (x = 1-6) are produced on deposition or on annealing. Evidence is also presented for the CUO- anion and U(CO)(x)(-) (x = 1-5) anions, which are formed by electron capture. Relativistic density functional theoretical calculations have been performed for the aforementioned species, which lend strong support to the experimental assignments of the infrared spectra. It is predicted that CUO is a linear singlet molecule with the shortest U-C bond yet characterized, and it has a U-C triple bond with substantial U 5f character. The theoretical analysis also finds that a distorted tetrahedral geometry of (C-2)UO2 lies much lower in energy than either the bent/linear OUCCO structures or the U(CO)(2) uranium dicarbonyl.

Abstract:The UF(5)(-) and UF(6)(-) anions are produced using electrospray ionization and investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and relativistic quantum chemistry. An extensive vibrational progression is observed in the spectra of UF(5)(-), indicating significant geometry changes between the anion and neutral ground state. Franck-Condon factor simulations of the observed vibrational progression yield an adiabatic electron detachment energy of 3.82 ± 0.05 eV for UF(5)(-). Relativistic quantum calculations using density functional and ab initio theories are performed on UF(5)(-) and UF(6)(-) and their neutrals. The ground states of UF(5)(-) and UF(5) are found to have C(4v) symmetry, but with a large U-F bond length change. The ground state of UF(5)(-) is a triplet state ((3)B(2)) with the two 5f electrons occupying a 5f(z3)-based 8a(1) highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the 5f(xyz)-based 2b(2) HOMO-1 orbital. The detachment cross section from the 5f(xyz) orbital is observed to be extremely small and the detachment transition from the 2b(2) orbital is more than ten times weaker than that from the 8a(1) orbital at the photon energies available. The UF(6)(-) anion is found to be octahedral, similar to neutral UF(6) with the extra electron occupying the 5f(xyz)-based a(2u) orbital. Surprisingly, no photoelectron spectrum could be observed for UF(6)(-) due to the extremely low detachment cross section from the 5f(xyz)-based HOMO of UF(6)(-).

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of gaseous UFx- (x = 2-4) anions, which are investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy and relativistic quantum chemistry. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained for all three species and the electron affinities of UFx (x = 2-4) are measured to be 1.16(3), 1.09(3), and 1.58(3) eV, respectively. Significant multi-electron transitions are observed in the photoelectron spectra of U(5f(3)7s(2)) F-2(-), as a result of strong electron correlation effects of the two 7s electrons. The U-F symmetric stretching vibrational modes are resolved for the ground states of all UFx (x = 2-4) neutrals. Theoretical calculations are performed to qualitatively understand the photoelectron spectra. The entire UFx- and UFx (x = 1-6) series are considered theoretically to examine the trends of U-F bonding and the electron affinities as a function of fluorine coordination. The increased U-F bond lengths and decreased bond orders from UF2- to UF4- indicate that the U-F bonding becomes weaker as the oxidation state of U increases from I to III. Abstract:The vibrational energy transfer in SF6-UF6 system has been investigated using a pulsed TEA CO2 laser for excitation of SF(sic) and SF6* is employed as a sensitizer to excite UF6 molecule. The transient changes in UV absorption of the vibrationally exicited UF6 molecules in 220-320 nm region have been observed. For 2.0 Torr SF6 + 2.0 Torr UF6 system, three different kinds of vibrationally excited UF6 have been found and their V-V intermolecular energy transfer time are 6.8, 9.0 and 26 mu s, the V-T energy relaxation times are 42, 8.0 and 1 ms respectively. The vibrational energy transfer mechanism of SF6-UF6 system has been discussed.

Abstract:The vibrational photochemical reaction of UF6 + HCl was investigated by exciting the ternary overtone of 3-nu(3) of UF6 in an intracavity CO laser system. It was found that the rate of the laser-driven reaction was much greater than that of the thermal reaction and there was a good isotopic selectivity for this photochemical process. The uranium isotope separation factors measured in experiments were around 1.2.

Abstract:We report an experimental investigation on the Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy of buffer-gas-cooled Barium monofluoride（BaF）molecules in a 4 K cryogenic cell.The obtained spectra with a resolution of19 MHz,much smaller than previously observed in absorption spectroscopy,clearly resolve the hyperfine transitions.Moreover,we use these high-resolution spectra to fit the hyperfine splittings of excited A（v=0）state and find the hyperfine splitting of the laser-cooling-relevant A 2 Π 1/2 （v=0,J=1/2,+） state is about 18 MHz,much higher than the previous theoretically predicted value.This provides important missing information for laser cooling of BaF molecules.

Abstract:A titanium : sapphire ring laser has been used in intracavity experiments to obtain high-resolution photoacoustic overtone spectra of monofluoroacetylene in the wavenumber region 12200–13800 cm −1 . The spectra obtained show very large signal-to-noise ratios (> 1000) for strong absorption peaks. Two band systems, 4ν 1 and 4ν 1 + ν 5 , have been observed. Both of these contain several individual bands which often seem to be severely perturbed. Altogether seven bands in the 4ν 1 band system have been assigned rotationally.

Abstract:Deep UV Raman spectrograph with the laser excitation line down to 177.3 nm was developed in this laboratory. An ellipsoidal mirror and a dispersed-subtractive triple monochromator were used to collect and disperse Raman light, respectively. The triple monochromator was arranged in a triangular configuration with only six mirrors used. 177.3 nm laser excited Raman spectrum with cut-off wavenumber down to 200 cm(-1) and spectral resolution of 8.0 cm(-1) can be obtained under the condition of high purity N2 purging. With the C-C σ bond in Teflon selectively excited by the 177.3 nm laser, resonance Raman spectrum of Teflon with good quality was recorded on the home-built instrument and the σ-σ(*) transition of C-C bond was studied. The result demonstrates that deep UV Raman spectrograph is powerful for studying the systems with electronic transition located in the deep UV region.
Infrared Fluorescence from Laser Induced Sensitized Reaction of SF/sub 6/-Uf/sub 6/-H/sub 2/ System

Abstract:Infrared fluorescence from the sensitized reaction in SF/sub 6/-UF/sub 6/-H/sub 2/ system induced by 10.6 ..mu..m P(24) line of a pulsed CO/sub 2/ laser is investigated. The time resolved IR fluorescence of vibrationally excited HF* is measured with an InSb photovoltic detector and is compared with that from the SF/sub 6/--H/sub 2/ system under similar experimental conditions. Our results show a linear dependence of fluorescence intensity with laser energy density. The time resolved IR fluorescence of HF* is dependent on the partial pressure of UF/sub 6/. The fluorescence intensity obeys the single exponential decay at lower P/sub =/, but non-single exponential decay is observed at higher P/sub =/. The time dependence of the HF* fluorescence intensity is explained with the infrared photo-sensitized reaction mechanism of the SF/sub 6/-UF/sub 6/-H/sub 2/ system.
Spectroscopic Study of a New Electronic Band System 33Δg-A3πu of C2.

Abstract:As one of the most important diatomic molecules in the universe, the spectroscopic characterizations of C2 have attracted wide attention in various fields, such as interstellar chemistry, planetary atmospheric chemistry, and combustion. In recent years, a systematic spectroscopic study of C2 in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region has been carried out in our laboratory by using the (1VUV+1'UV) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization method based on the combination of a tunable VUV laser source and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Two new electronic transition band systems have been reported, following the pioneering work of Herzberg and co-workers in 1969. In the current study, a total of 18 vibronic transition bands of C2 from the lower a3Πu state are experimentally observed in the VUV photon energy range 72000-81000 cm-1, and 6 new upper vibronic levels of 3Δg symmetry are identified, which are assigned as the v' = 0-5 vibrational levels of the 33Δg state of C2. The term energy Te of the 33Δg state is determined to be in the range of 78425-78475 cm-1 (9.724-9.730 eV) with respect to the ground X1Σg+ state, and the molecular constants such as vibrational and rotational constants are also determined, which are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by high-level ab initio theoretical calculations. Irregular vibrational energy level spacings in the 33Δg state are observed, which is tentatively attributed to the strong perturbations between the 33Δg and 23Δg states, as previously predicted by theory.

Abstract:We present a laser spectroscopic study of the Ã1Πu – X̃1Σg+ transition of 13C mono-substituted C3 in the 378–406 nm region. The 13C12C12C and 12C13C12C isotopologues are produced in a pulsed jet expansion, by DC discharging a gas mixture of ∼0.3% C2H2/Ar (with ∼1% 13C natural abundance). By using laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy, thirteen vibronic bands belonging to the Ã1Πu – X̃1Σg+ electronic transition have been recorded for 13C12C12C and 12C13C12C, eleven of which have not been reported before. The transitions cover the three fundamental vibrational modes (ν1,ν2l,ν3). For all the vibronic bands, the full width at half maximum of spectral lines is found to be narrower than 0.023 cm-1, allowing to determine the transition frequencies with an absolute accuracy of ∼0.003 cm-1. Moreover, rotational analyses of the high-resolution data have yielded accurate spectroscopic constants for the upper vibronic states studied here. The 100–000, 04+0–000 and 12−0–000 bands of 13C12C12C, and the 02+0–000 and 04−0–000 bands of 12C13C12C are found to be less blended by spectral features of 12C3, and thus may be used for astronomical searches of 13C12C12C and 12C13C12C in the space.

Abstract:Reactions of laser-ablated uranium atoms, cations, and electrons with O-2 during condensation with excess neon produce UO, UO2, UO3, UO2+, and UO2- as characterized by infrared spectra with oxygen isotopic substitution and B3LYP/pseudopotential calculations. Differences in low-lying states for UO2 give rise to substantial shifts and ground state reversal between argon and neon matrices. A series of B3LYP/pseudopotential calculations has been undertaken on oxide species related to the uranyl dication by the addition of one, two, or three electrons. Several electronic states have been characterized for each species. These simple, low-cost calculations predict vibrational frequencies which match those observed in neon matrices extremely well (typically 3-5% too high). The ground state of neutral UO2 appears to have (3)Phi(u), symmetry, while (2)Phi(u), ground states are implied for UO2+ and UO2-.

Abstract:Employing the dual laser plasma technique, we measured the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photoabsorption spectrum of F 2+ ions, spanning the energy range from 53 to 93 eV with an energy resolution ( E/ΔE ) of 866. The measured spectrum is carefully analyzed by comparing with the available reference data and theoretical calculation using the Cowan code. We identify prominent transitions to the Rydberg series 2s22p2ns/nd and 2s2p3np from the ground level and remarkable transitions to the 2s22p2(1D)nd2D states from the 2s22p32D metastable level. Transition energies and line profile parameters are determined by fitting the identified absorption features. The calibration of the spectrometer with well-known transitions allows us to provide line positions for well-resolved resonances with an uncertainty of 20 meV. The reported experimental data of F 2+ significantly contribute to the fundamental atomic database, offering valuable benchmarks for theoretical calculations with potential applications in astrophysics and plasma sciences.

Abstract:High-resolution transmission spectra of radiatively-heated low-z C10H16O6 plasma have been measured on 'Xing-guang II' laser facility by using a flat held grating spectrometer. Absorption lines of oxygen and carbon ions in the region of 1.6-5.0 nm have been observed clearly and identified. Using the unresolved transition array model, rye also calculated the transmission spectra of C10H16O6 plasma. The measured transmission spectrum has been compared with the calculated one.

Abstract:Abstract We report ultraviolet and far-vacuum ultraviolet (FUV) absorption spectra of solid molecular oxygen recorded over the wavelength region 110–365 nm for temperatures between 9 and 30 K; in which, the light source was dispersed from a synchrotron. The UV/FUV spectra of solids O2 deposited at various temperatures appeared distinctly different profiles due to variation of compositions of α-O2, β-O2 and the imperfect crystal structure at the specific temperature; in addition, the icy sample exhibited its own scattering curve deposited at specific temperature. Resolved from the thermal ramping technique, the absorption spectra of solids α-O2 and β-O2 were established in the wavelength region 110–250 nm at 9 K and 30 K, respectively, for the first time.
