Abstract:A zoom lens system with no moving elements is reported. The system is composed of three lenses: one glass lens and two liquid crystal (LC) ones almost identical in structure. The focal length of the LC lenses is tunable from negative to positive with two independent applied voltages. The two LC lenses are placed on two sides of the glass lens, and the positions of all lenses are fixed. The image size is changed and the image position on the CCD image sensor plane is maintained by tuning the focal length of each LC lens. The lens power of the LC lenses ranges from −14.7 to 14.0 m−1. Clear images are obtained at various values of the applied voltages and the zoom ratio is approximately 1:2.

Abstract:This paper demonstrated a zoom optical system with variable magnification based on the tunable polymer lens. The designed system mainly consists of two polymer lenses, voice coil motors, a doublet lens and CMOS chip. The zoom magnification can be adjusted by altering the focal length of the two elastic polymer lenses synergistically through controlling the output displacement of the voice coil motor. A static doublet lens in combination with the polymer lenses stabilize the image plane at the CMOS chip. The optical structure of the zoom system is presented, as well as a detailed description including the lens materials and fabrication process. Images with each zoom magnification are captured, and the Spot diagram and MTF are simulated using Zemax software. A change in magnification from 0.13×to 8.44×is demonstrated within the tiny 0.4 mm variation of the displacement load, and produce a 16.1×full range of magnification experimentally. Simulation analyses show that all the radii of the spot diagram under different magnifications are less than 11.3 um, and the modulation transfer function reaches 107 line pairs per mm. The designed optical system shows the potential for developing stable, integrated, and low-cost zoom systems with large magnification range.

Abstract:We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.

Abstract:A four-group stabilized zoom system using two liquid lenses and two fixed lens groups is proposed. We describe the design principle, realization, and the testing of a 5.06:1 zoom system. The realized effective focal length (EFL) range is 6.93 mm to 35.06 mm, and the field of view (FOV) range is 8 degrees to 40 degrees. The system can zoom fast when liquid lens 1's (L-1's) optical power take the value from 0.0087 mm(-1) to 0.0192 mm(-1) and liquid lens 2's (L-2's) optical power take the value from 0.0185 mm(-1) to -0.01 mm(-1). Response time of the realized zoom system was less than 2.5 ms, and the settling time was less than 15 ms.The analysis of elements' parameters and the measurement of lens performance not only verify the design principle further, but also show the zooming process by the use of two liquid lenses. The system is useful for motion carriers e.g., robot, ground vehicle, and unmanned aerial vehicles considering that it is fast, reliable, and miniature.

Abstract:The development trend of optical imaging systems today is lightweight, large zoom, and low power consumption. The traditional zoom imaging system is composed of glass lens, mechanical control module and image sensor. Its working principle is to realize zooming by mechanically adjusting the distance between each lens group.The shortcomings of traditional zoom imaging systems are its complex structure, inconvenient operation and discrete variable multiples. The combination of adjustable focus lens and glass lens makes the zoom optical imaging system lighter and easier to obtain image detail information. In this paper, we propose a variable magnification imaging system composed of a combination of a liquid crystal lens and a glass lens. This variable magnification imaging system consists of an optical lens group, a liquid crystal lens array and a CMOS detector. The optical lens group is a telephoto lens composed of traditional glass lenses.The liquid crystal lens is a liquid crystal device that electronically controls the focal length. The object is first imaged through the optical lens group, the liquid crystal lens array then images the image formed by the optical lens group, and finally the image is received by the CMOS. This is the imaging principle of this system;By adjusting the voltage applied to the liquid crystal lens array to adjust its focal length, and then moving the CMOS mechanically, zoom imaging can be achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a holographic zoom system based on a liquid lens. By loading a divergent spherical wave, the focus planes of the reconstructed image and the zero-order diffraction beam induced by the liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) can be separated. By controlling the focal lengths of the liquid lens and the encoded digital lens on the spatial light modulator panel, we can change the magnification of the reconstructed image very quickly, without mechanical parts and keeping the output plane stationary.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an ultrathin zoom lens system based on liquid lenses. The proposed system consists of an annular folded lens and three electrowetting liquid lenses. The annular folded lens has several concentric surfaces. The annular folded lens is used to get the main power and correct aberrations. The three liquid lenses are used to change the focal length and correct aberration. An analysis of the proposed system is presented along with the design, fabrication, and testing of a prototype. All the elements in the proposed system are very thin, so the system is an ultrathin zoom lens system, which has potential application as lightweight, thin, high-quality imagers for aerospace, consumer, and military applications.

Abstract:This paper proposes a zoom lens system based on liquid lenses. The system design consists of a fixed lens and four two-chamber liquid lenses. The chambers are filled with different liquids. The design principle is analyzed. Optimization method is used to get the optimal solution. With the solution, the proposed zoom lens system can obtain achromatic and spherical aberration corrected images in a particular zooming range, and no moving element is needed in the proposed zoom lens system. By choosing proper liquids, it can be designed to work within particular working regions with improved optical performance. We give the detailed simulation examples. Abstract:The invention relates to the field of optical lenses and discloses a liquid crystal zoom lens and a zoom control method of the liquid crystal zoom lens. An annular diffraction electrode structure is arranged on an electrode plate of the liquid crystal zoom lens, and the radius of the annular diffraction electrode meets a condition shown in the specification, wherein rj is the radius of the No. j ring, lambda 0 is the design wavelength, F0 is the constant of focal length, and rho is the phase depth which is greater than 1; and the optical path difference between areas corresponding to adjacent annular diffraction electrode structures meets a condition shown in the specification, wherein delta nLC (V) is the difference of refraction indexes of liquid crystal materials of adjacent areas when an externally applied voltage is V, and d is the thickness of a liquid crystal layer. A driving voltage output by an electric control device is changed and the difference of the refraction indexes of the liquid crystal materials in adjacent areas is controlled so as to implement the zooming. Due to the annular electrode structure with the phase depth rho greater than 1 disclosed by the invention, the requirement of processing accuracy of electrodes can be reduced, and the diffraction efficiency of the lens can be increased; and the driving voltage can be directly output so as to implement the zooming, so that peripheral control circuits can be simplified, and operations are simple.

The LC lens together with a usual glass lens forms an imaging system, and the LC lens plays the role of focusing. Very sharp color images are obtained by the system. Abstract:A micro zoom system without moving elements by use of two liquid lenses is designed and optimized in this paper. The zoom equations of the system composed of two liquid lenses are deduced. The structure parameters including radius and thickness of a conical double-liquid electrowetting based lens are analyzed and calculated. Because the liquid thickness varies non-linearly with the radius of the interface, it's very difficult to optimize a real liquid lens using commercial optical design software directly. Through the Application Programming Interface (API) of the optical design software CODE V, a zoom system with two real electrowetting based liquid lenses is modeled and optimized. A two-liquid-lens zoom system without moving elements, with a zoom factor of 1.8 and a compact structure of 10 mm is designed for illustration. This can be useful for the camera design of mobile phones, tablets and so on. And this paper presents a convenient way of designing and optimizing a zoom system including liquid lenses by commercial optical design software.

Abstract:We propose a zoom liquid lens employing a multifocal Fresnel zone plate. The proposed lens has two optical surfaces: liquid-liquid interface and Fresnel zone plate. The Fresnel zone plate is designed to have a multifocal point and an increased depth of focus. Therefore, the proposed lens has two obvious advantages. Due to increased depth of focus, the proposed lens can realize zooming using only one tunable liquid-liquid interface, which is not available for conventional liquid lens. Thus, it is possible to remove conventional zooming mechanisms from cameras. Besides, the focal length tuning range is also increased, and a lens system based on the proposed lens can simultaneously collect two images with different magnifications. We present the design, fabrication and characterization of the proposed lens. The shortest positive and negative focal length are ∼17.5mm and ∼−34.5mm and the diameter is 5mm. The zoom ratio of the proposed lens reaches ∼1.48×. Our results confirm that the proposed lens has widespread applications in imaging system.

Abstract:For the existent imaging devices, zooming is realized by varying either the distance or the curvature of the lenses. Therefore, the zoom system is either bulky or with a limited zoom range. To further minimize the structure and increase the zoom range, we propose an optofluidic zoom system using liquid optical path switchers. The liquid optical path switcher can be switched between liquid phase and air phase, which varies the refractive index of the optical path. Thus, for the system, zooming is realized by varying both curvature and refractive index, whose principle is quite different from the existent methods. We fabricate an optofluidic zoom system using liquid optical path switchers. The experiment results show that the proposed optofluidic zoom system can achieve a large zoom range from similar to 45 to similar to 70 mm. The system is very compact, and the light efficiency is high. The proposed system increases the zoom range greatly and has potential to be applied in cameras, endoscopes, microscopes, and so on.

Abstract:A liquid crystal (LC) lens with a laterally shiftable optical axis is proposed and demonstrated. The optical axis of the lens can be driven to shift within the lens aperture without compromising its optical properties. The lens is constructed by two glass substrates with identical interdigitated comb-type finger electrodes on the inner surfaces, and they are oriented at 90° with respect to each other. The distribution of voltage difference between two substrates is determined by eight driving voltages, and is controlled within the linear response region of LC materials, thereby generating a parabolic phase profile. In experiments, an LC lens with an LC layer of 50 µm and an aperture of 2 mm × 2 mm is prepared. The interference fringes and focused spots are recorded and analyzed. As a result, the optical axis can be driven to shift precisely in the lens aperture, and the lens maintains its focusing ability. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical analysis, and good performance of the LC lens is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this work, we propose an active optical zoom system. The zoom module of the system is formed by a liquid lens and a spatial light modulator (SLM). By controlling the focal lengths of the liquid lens and the encoded digital lens on the SLM panel, we can change the magnification of an image without mechanical moving parts and keep the output plane stationary. The magnification can change from 1/3 to 3/2 as the focal length of the encoded lens on the SLM changes from infinity to 24 cm. The proposed active zoom system is simple and flexible, and has widespread application in optical communications, imaging systems, and displays.

By applying appropriate potentials on the divided electrode, the LC cell behaves like an optical lens having astigmatic properties; the phase retardation of an incident light beam takes an elliptical shape in the cross-section.
