Abstract:This paper studies the conditions under which peer-to-peer (P2P) technology may be beneficial in providing IPTV services over typical network architectures. It has three major contributions. First, we contrast two network models used to study the performance of such a system: a commonly used logical “Internet as a cloud” model and a “physical” model that reflects the characteristics of the underlying network. Specifically, we show that the cloud model overlooks important architectural aspects of the network and may drastically overstate the benefits of P2P technology. Second, we propose an algorithm called Zebra that pre-stripes content across multiple peers during idle hours to speed up P2P content delivery in an IPTV environment with limited upload bandwidth. We also perform simulations to measure Zebra’s effectiveness at reducing load on the content server during peak hours. Third, we provide a cost-benefit analysis of P2P video content delivery, focusing on the profit trade-offs for different pricing/incentive models rather than purely on capacity maximization. In particular, we find that under high volume of video demand, a P2P built-in incentive model performs better than any other model, while the conventional no-P2P model generates more profits when the request rate is low. The flat-reward model generally falls in between the usage-based model and the built-in model in terms of profitability except for low request rates. We also find that built-in and flat-reward models are more profitable than the usage-based model for a wide range of subscriber community sizes.

Abstract:IPTV is an emerging Internet application, and is revolutionizing the entertainment and media industries. In this paper, we examine the current progress in research and development of IPTV systems. We provide an overview of two major IPTV system architectures, namely, the IP multicast architecture and the P2P architecture, and review various challenges, design issues, and interesting research problems in these approaches, more from an ISP's perspective. We also outline a hybrid IP multicast and P2P IPTV architecture, which enhances the system resilience to network errors, while preserving the desirable properties of the IP multicast system.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that traditional Content Delivery Network(CDN) architecture Internet Protocol Television(IPTV) system is expensive to deploy and maintain.Hybrid architecture IPTV system project is proposed.The original IPTV system of CDN architecture is merged with Peer-to-Peer(P2P).This paper analyzes the real data of shanghai telecom IPTV system,designs an approximate model of program popular degree.Experimental results show that,this scheme can cut costs and enhance the scalability,the model of popular degree get about 40% system load reducement as a result.

Abstract:IPTV based on full-duplex networks potentially provides much richer media experiences than traditional TV. However, video contents compressed with non-scalable coding schemes greatly constrain the potential. This paper proposes a new IPTV architecture, which fully takes the advantages of scalable video for adaptation to both networks and devices. Firstly, network adaptation is mainly performed in scalable IPTV servers. An algorithm is proposed to optimally allocate available bandwidth between different frames and different channels, considering the dependency, weighting factors and rate-distortion data of scalable layered streams. Secondly, home gateway provides device adaptation, which is accomplished by reshaping the received scalable video. Considering the existing set-top boxes equipped with hardware decoder, we also propose a fast and effective algorithm to convert a scalable video to a non-scalable one in the home gateway.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed video-on-demand (VoD) as an efficient means for providing reliable streaming service for Internet users. It is known that peer-assisted VoD systems, such as NetFlix and PPlive, generally incur a lower deployment cost in terms of server bandwidth consumption. However, some fundamental issues still need to be further clarified, particularly for VoD service providers. In particular, how far can we push peer-assisted VoD forward, and at the scale of VoD systems, the maximum reduction of server bandwidth consumption that can be achieved with peer-assisted approaches. In this paper, we provide extensive model analysis to understand the minimum server bandwidth consumption for peer-assisted VoD systems. We first propose a basic model that can optimally schedule user demands at given snapshots. Our model analysis reveals the optimal performance bound and shows that the existing peer-assisted protocols are still far from being optimal. How to push the server bandwidth consumption to the limit remains a big challenge in VoD system design. To approach the optimal bandwidth consumption in real deployment, we further extend our model to a realistic case to capture the peer dynamic across continuous time-slots. The simulation result indicates that the optimal load scheduling problem is still achievable through a dynamic programming algorithm. Its design principle further motivates a fast priority-based algorithm that achieves near-optimal performance. These proposed algorithms can significantly reduce the bandwidth consumption of dedicated VoD servers.

Abstract:By analyzing the characteristics of Internet Protocol Television(IPTV) service and the influence of fast forward/backward on the server, a packaging and indexing format of streaming media file optimized for fast forward/backward is proposed. Based on block-level media storage technology, it designs frame type storage strategy. Performance evaluation experiments demonstrate that IPTV server can work more efficiently with the format under fast forward/backward.

Abstract:IPTV is highly advocated in recent years. Today, the growth of the residential users makes it possible to broadcast live video content through global Internet to a great population of end users. In this paper, we mainly describe the design and deployment experiences of a peer-to-peer (P2P) based IPTV system called Gridmedia since P2P is universally recognized as a scalable and cost-effective means for group communication. In order to reduce the playback latency at end users as well as offer resilience to high churn rate in peer community, Gridmedia organizes end users into an unstructured overlay while proposes an efficient push-pull streaming mechanism to distribute video segments among partner nodes. To further verify the prototype, on one hand we conduct extensive experiments over PlanetLab to confirm the overlay architecture and streaming mechanism in Gridmedia can greatly reduce the average playback latency as compared to previous works; on the other hand the practical deployment of Gridmedia system over global Internet also demonstrated it could reliably support large number of users without need of network infrastructure. We also discuss, in a practical way, the issues when perfecting a prototype to a publicly released platform and system performance during live broadcasting CCTV Spring Festival Gala 2006.

Abstract:The unprecedented growth of mobile video traffic is adding significant pressure to the energy drain at both the network and the end user. Energy efficient video transmission techniques are thus imperative to cope with the challenge of satisfying user demand at sustainable costs. In this paper, we investigate how predicted user rates can be exploited for energy efficient video streaming with the popular HTTP-based Adaptive Streaming (AS) protocols (e.g. DASH). To this end, we develop an energy-efficient Predictive Green Streaming (PGS) optimization framework that leverages predictions of wireless data rates to achieve the following objectives 1) minimize the required transmission airtime without causing streaming interruptions, 2) minimize total downlink Base Station (BS) power consumption for cases where BSs can be switched off in deep sleep, and 3) enable a trade-off between AS quality and energy consumption. Our framework is first formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) where decisions on multi-user rate allocation, video segment quality, and BS transmit power are jointly optimized. Then, to provide an online solution, we present a polynomial-time heuristic algorithm that decouples the PGS problem into multiple stages. We provide a performance analysis of the proposed methods by simulations, and numerical results demonstrate that the PGS framework yields significant energy savings.

Abstract:As a promising standard of television, Internet protocol television (IPTV) gains increasing popularity with its on-demand services. However, supporting scalable on-demand IPTV services remains to be an important challenge. Existing IPTV architecture dedicates a regional station to serve subscribers in the respective region regardless of temporal and spatial dynamics in service demand. This may cause significant imbalance of resource utilization and service provisioning delay among stations, especially with increasing subscribers and service catalog. In this paper, we propose CiTV, a collaborative Internet TV service platform that achieves efficient and scalable IPTV service delivery through interstation collaboration. First, CiTV employs a novel request dispatching algorithm that enables stations to autonomously dispatch requests among themselves and achieves low per-view cost and load variance at the same time. Second, CiTV also leverages a distributed content placement algorithm to globally optimize content utilization at multistation level, which is important for deployment scalability. Last but not the least, CiTV also ensures service delivery quality and efficiency through fine-grained collaboration scope control. We perform both theoretical and empirical analysis of CiTV. Our experiment results suggest that CiTV significantly improves the scalability of on-demand IPTV services for the existing IPTV architecture.
Distributed Optimal Datacenter Bandwidth Allocation For Dynamic Adaptive Video Streaming

Abstract:Video streaming systems such as YouTube and Netflix are usually supported by the content delivery networks and datacenters that can consume many megawatts of power. Most existing works independently study the issues of improving quality of experience (QoE) for viewers and reducing the cost and emissions associated with the enormous energy usage of datacenters. By contrast, this paper addresses them both, and jointly optimizes the QoE, the energy cost and emissions by intelligently allocating datacenter bandwidth among different client groups. Specially, we propose a distributed algorithm for achieving the optimal bandwidth allocation. The algorithm novelly decomposes the optimization process into separate ones, which are solved iteratively across datacenters and clients. We demonstrate its convergence by both theoretical proof and experimental validation. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm converges very fast and achieves much better QoE-cost balance than existing approaches.

Abstract:As IP becomes the predominant choice for video delivery, storing the ever increasing number of videos for delivery will become a challenge. In this paper we focus on how to take advantage of user viewing patterns to place content in provider networks to reduce their storage and network utilization. We first characterize user viewing behavior using data collected from a nationally deployed Video-on-Demand service. We provide proof that users watch only a small portion of videos (not just for short clips, but even with full-length movies). We use this information and a highly flexible Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulation to solve the placement problem, in contrast to traditional popularity-based placement and caching strategy. We perform detailed simulations using real traces of user viewing sessions (including stream control operations such as Pause, Skip, etc.). Our results show that the use of a segmentbased placement yields substantial savings both in storage as well as network bandwidth. For example, compared to a simple caching scheme using full videos, our MIP-based placement using segments can achieve up to 71% reduction in peak link bandwidth usage.
Towards Low-Latency and Energy-Efficient Hybrid P2P-CDN Live Video Streaming

Abstract:Streaming segmented videos over the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an increasingly popular approach in both live and video-on-demand (VoD) applications. However, designing a scalable and adaptable framework that reduces servers energy consumption and supports low latency and high quality services, particularly for live video streaming scenarios, is still challenging for Over-The-Top (OTT) service providers. To address such challenges, this paper introduces a new hybrid P2P-CDN framework that leverages new networking and computing paradigms, i.e., Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and edge computing for live video streaming. The proposed framework introduces a multi-layer architecture and a tree of possible actions therein (an action tree), taking into account all available resources from peers, edge, and CDN servers to efficiently distribute video fetching and transcoding tasks across a hybrid P2P-CDN network, consequently enhancing the users latency and video quality. We also discuss our testbed designed to validate the framework and compare it with baseline methods. The experimental results indicate that the proposed framework improves user Quality of Experience (QoE), reduces client serving latency, and improves edge server energy consumption compared to baseline approaches.

Abstract:Today a large portion of Internet traffic is video. Over The Top (OTT) service providers offer video streaming services by creating a large distributed cloud network on top of a physical infrastructure owned by multiple entities. Our study explores insights from video streaming activity by analyzing data collected from Korea's largest OTT service provider. Our analysis of nationwide data shows interesting characteristics of video streaming such as correlation between user profile information (e.g., age, sex) and viewing habits, viewing habits of users (when do the users watch? using which devices?), viewing patterns (early leaving viewer vs. steady viewer), etc. Video on Demand (VoD) streaming involves costly (and often limited) compute, storage, and network resources. Findings from our study will be beneficial for OTTs, Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and Carrier Network Operators, to improve their resource allocation and management techniques.

Our main idea is to design a mechanism that alters the distribution of user requests to another distribution which is much more cache-efficient, but still remains 'close enough' (in terms of cost) to fulfil individual user's preference.

Abstract:P2PTV refers to television media streams being distributed to large numbers of viewers on the Internet via peer-to-peer overlay networks. In the design of P2PTV systems, there is a fundamental trade-off between the better Quality-of-Service (QoS) desired by the viewers and the lower resource consumption preferred by the P2PTV distributors as well as the internet service providers (ISPs). This trade-off is partially caused by the time-varying and limited capabilities of the overlay connections. Observing the potential duplication of the television media streams, we propose a metadata based delivery framework for P2PTV. In contrast to previous efforts, this framework distributes the original media streams as well as the associated metadata information simultaneously. As a result, the streaming clients at the viewer side are able to identify duplicated content segments in media streams and avoid requesting the duplicated content multiple times. In this way, the P2PTV distributors, ISPs and viewers could reduce their upload bandwidth consumption. Moreover, the distributors within this framework can discriminate various media content according to time constraints such that they could apply different uploading policies to live, pre-recorded and hybrid media content. The streaming clients are even allowed to slightly time-shift local playback schedules such that viewers have an opportunity to experience better P2PTV services.

Abstract:With the rapid development of wireless access technologies and mobile terminals (eg tablet, smartphone), end users are able to enjoy abundant applications with heavy workload on mobile platforms from anywhere at anytime. However, due to limited terminal size and portable requirement, mobile devices are difficult to provide sufficient computation and battery capacity, hence making the Quality of Experience (QoE) of mobile platform applications hard to guarantee [1].Among the different sorts of heavy-workload applications, media streaming is a representative one [2]. Since media content needs to be transmitted, decoded and played on mobile devices, the energy of both wireless network interface, processor and screen is cost during the entire process. Recent literature has shown that transmission costs up to 50% of total energy on average [3, 4]. In the literature, media content encoding/decoding [5, 6] or traffic shaping [7, 8] are usually employed to reduce transmission energy cost. The former one needs to modify the media encoding/decoding pattern to reduce the amount of transmission or change the traffic pattern in a more energy-efficient way, while the latter one is transparent to both source and destination and is more flexible to multiple video/audio encoding/decoding formats.
Evaluating QoS Parameters for IPTV Distribution in Heterogeneous Networks

Abstract:The present work presents an architecture developed to evaluate the QoS parameters for the IPTV heterogeneous network. At its very basic level lie two software technologies: Video LAN and Windows Media Services with two operating systems: Windows and Linux. Three types of streams are analyzed, which will be transmitted to a Linux VLC client through means of the aggregation and access servers. The first stream is generated in real time by a capture camera, processed by the encapsulated VC-1 encoder and sent to the Media Server, while the second one is of VoD(Video on Demand) type and the third one will be handled by DVBViewer through the MPEG TS form. The first stream is transcoded in H.264-AAC such that the Linux stations will recognize its format. Through the simultaneous transmission of the three streams, we are analyzing their performance from a QoS parameters point of view by means of an application implemented in C programming language. The stream transporting the DVB-S television content was proven to ensure the best performance regarding loss of packets, delays and jitter.
Assessing VoD pressure on network power consumption

Abstract:Assessing the energy consumption or carbon footprint of data distribution of video streaming services is usually carried out through energy or carbon intensity figures (in Wh or gCO2e per GB). In this paper, we first review the reasons why such approaches are likely to lead to misunderstandings and potentially to erroneous conclusions. To overcome those shortcomings, we propose a new methodology whose key idea is to consider a video streaming usage at the whole scale of a territory, and evaluate the impact of this usage on the network infrastructure. At the core of our methodology is a parametric model of a simplified network and Content Delivery Network (CDN) infrastructure, which is automatically scaled according to peak usage needs. This allows us to compare the power consumption of this infrastructure under different scenarios, ranging from a sober baseline to a generalized use of high bitrate videos. Our results show that classical efficiency indicators do not reflect the power consumption increase of more intensive Internet usage, and might even lead to misleading conclusions.

Abstract:In a video on demand system, the main video repository may be far away from the user and generally has limited streaming capacities. Since a high quality video's size is huge, it requires high bandwidth for streaming over the internet. In order to achieve a higher video hit ratio, reduced client waiting time, distributed server's architecture can be used, in which multiple local servers are placed close to clients and, based on their regional demands video contents are cached dynamically from the main server. As the cost of proxy server is decreasing and demand for reduced waiting time is increasing day by day, newer architectures are explored, innovative schemes are arrived at. In this paper we present novel 3 layer architecture, includes main multimedia server, a Tracker and Proxy servers. This architecture targets to optimize the client waiting time. We also propose an efficient prefix caching and load sharing algorithm at the proxy server to allocate the cache according to regional popularity of the video. The simulation results demonstrate that it achieves significantly lower client's waiting time, when compared to the other existing algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of how to design an energy-efficient simulcast scheme for base stations (BSs) to deliver multiple resolutions of IPTV programs simultaneously in a fixed wireless network. We refer to this problem as the energy-efficient IPTV simulcast (EES) problem. We first provide the problem definition of EES and prove that EES is NP-complete. We then formulate the problem as a mixed integer linear program (MILP) and provide a heuristic approach, named VD-RingCover. We prove that the RingCover algorithm, which is a subroutine of VD-RingCover, can obtain the minimum energy consumption for the single base station case (named EES-SB). Our numerical results show that the MILP can solve the small scale problem properly and that the VD-RingCover achieves good results in both large and small scale problems.
