Abstract:In this paper, we derive an algorithm to calculate the light traffic derivatives of the mean waiting time in the GI/G/1 queue. The algorithm is based on a simple recursive procedure. It is very easy to implement and very fast.

Abstract:The performance evaluation of many complex manufacturing, communication and computer systems has been made possible by modeling them as queueing systems. Many approximations used in queueing theory have been drawn from the behavior of queues in light and heavy traffic conditions. In this paper, we propose a new approximation technique, which combines the light and heavy traffic characteristics. This interpolation approximation is based on the theory of multipoint Padé approximation which is applied at two points: light and heavy traffic. We show how this can be applied for estimating the waiting time moments of the GI/G/ 1 queue. The light traffic derivatives of any order can be evaluated using the MacLaurin series analysis procedure. The heavy traffic limits of the GI/G/ 1 queue are well known in the literature. Our technique generalizes the previously developed interpolation approximations and can be used to approximate any order of the waiting time moments. Through numerical examples, we show that the moments of the steady state waiting time can be estimated with extremely high accuracy under all ranges of traffic intensities using low orders of the approximant. We also present a framework for the development of simple analytical approximation formulas.

Abstract:Recently, several methods have been proposed to approximate performance measures of queueing systems based on their light traffic derivatives, e.g., the MacLaurin expansion, the Padé approximation, and interpolation with heavy traffic limits. The key condition required in all these approximations is that the performance measures be analytic when the arrival rates equal to zero. In this paper, we study theGI/G/1 queue. We show that if the c.d.f. of the interarrival time can be expressed as a MacLaurin series over [0, ∞), then the mean steady-state system time of a job is indeed analytic when the arrival rate to the queue equals to zero. This condition is satisfied by phase-type distributions but not c.d.f.'s without support [0, ∞), such as uniform and shifted exponential distributions. In fact, we show through two examples that the analyticity does not hold for most commonly used distribution functions which do not satisfy this condition.

Abstract:We derive the MacLaurin series for the moments of the system time and the delay with respect to the parameters in the service time or interarrival time distributions in the GI/G/1 queue. The coefficients in these series are expressed in terms of the derivatives of the interarrival time density function evaluated at zero and the moments of the service time distribution, which can be easily calculated through a simple recursive procedure. The light traffic derivatives can be obtained from these series. For the M/G/1 queue, we are able to recover the formulas for the moments of the system time and the delay, including the Pollaczek–Khinchin mean-value formula.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the departure process of the GI/G/1 queue. We develop a simple recursive procedure to calculate the MacLaurin series of its moments and covariances with respect to a parameter in the service time. Based on this recursive procedure the explicit formulas of the coefficients of these MacLaurin series can be obtained in terms of derivatives of the probability density function of the interarrival time evaluated at zero and the moments of the interarrival time and the service time. One important application of these MacLaurin series is that they can be used to obtain the entire response curves of the moments and variances of the departure process, for example, via interpolation by polynomials or rational functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a queueing model to describe traffic breakdown phenomena caused by perturbations of on-ramp merging vehicles. In congested mainline traffic flow, we assume that a merging vehicle will trigger a jam queue formulation. If this jam queue cannot dissipate before the next vehicle merges into the main road, it could grow into a wide jam and eventually result in traffic breakdown. Different from many existing models that focused on the propagation of jam waves, the proposed model emphasizes the size evolution of a jam queue (local congested vehicle cluster) instead of its spatial evolutions. This new approach reduces analysis difficulties and allows us to directly link microscopic driving behaviors with macroscopic breakdown phenomena. Test results show that the simulated breakdown probability curve (parameter tuning using Next Generation Simulation vehicular trajectories) fits with the empirical breakdown probability curve that is estimated by Performance Measurement System (PeMS) data. This indicates that this new model can account for the probability of breakdown phenomena and help us set an appropriate inflow rate so as to void breakdown and meanwhile maintain a high road capacity.

Abstract:Queueing models can usefully represent production systems experiencing congestion due to irregular flows, but exact analyses of these queueing models can be difficult. Thus it is natural to seek relatively simple approximations that are suitably accurate for engineering purposes. Here approximations for a basic queueing model are developed and evaluated. The model is the GI/G/m queue, which has m identical servers in parallel, unlimited waiting room, and the first‐come first‐served queue discipline, with service and interarrival times coming from independent sequences of independent and identically distributed random variables with general distributions. The approximations depend on the general interarrival‐time and service‐time distributions only through their first two moments. The main focus is on the expected waiting time and the probability of having to wait before beginning service, but approximations are also developed for other congestion measures, including the entire distributions of waiting time, queue‐length and number in system. These relatively simple approximations are useful supplements to algorithms for computing the exact values that have been developed in recent years. The simple approximations can serve as starting points for developing approximations for more complicated systems for which exact solutions are not yet available. These approximations are especially useful for incorporating GI/G/m models in larger models, such as queueing networks, wherein the approximations can be components of rapid modeling tools.

Abstract:The approximation of a GI/G/1 queue plays a key role in the performance evaluation of queueing systems. To improve the conventional two-moment approximations, we propose a three-moment approximation for the mean queue time of a GI/G/1 queue based on the exact results of the H-2/M/1 queue. The model is validated over a wide range of numerical experiments. Based on paired t-tests, our three-moment approximation outperforms the two-moment ones when the inter-arrival time variability is greater than one.
Equivalent Queue Length Change Rate Models for Congested Traffic Flow

Abstract:To describe the evolution principle of vehicular queue in the congested traffic flow, the equivalent queue length model for a single-lane link and the average equivalent queue length model for a multi-lane link are built based on the two-fluid theory. By applying the calculous, the average equivalent queue length change rate models are deduced for single-lane and multi-lane links respectively. It is found that the change rate of equivalent queue length is relative to the traffic wave speed and they are identical at the special circumstance. Finally, the equivalent queue length change rate models are validated by using the simulation data from VISSIM. The results show that the equivalent and actual queue length change rates approach during the sampling interval and they more approach when the sampling interval is longer. When the traffic flow is in the congested state, the evolution speed of vehicular queue can be described quantitatively and simply by the equivalent queue length change rate model. The model provides the theoretical basis for adjusting the strategy of urban traffic control.

Abstract:The interarrival time random variables at the nodes of queueing networks are typically correlated. The analysis, by ignoring the correlations, may not be very accurate in many instances, especially when the correlations are high. The G/G/1 queue with Markov-modulated arrivals is one of the few models that can be used to study queues with non-renewal arrival processes. The waiting time of the Markov-modulated G/G/1 queue has been studied widely in the literature. In this paper, we study its departure process. We derive the MacLaurin series for the moments and the lag-1 autocorrelation of the departure process. The coefficients of the MacLaurin series are calculated through simple recursive equations, which are then used to approximate the moments and the lag-1 autocorrelation based on Padé approximation. Several numerical examples are provided which show that our method gives very good estimates. Our results on the departure process can be potentially used to develop better approximation methods for general queueing networks.

Abstract:Applying the technique of smoothed perturbation analysis (SPA) to the GI / G / m queue with first-come, first-served (FCFS) queue discipline, we derive sample path estimators for the second derivative of mean steady-state system time with respect to a parameter of the service time distribution. Such estimators provide a possible means for speeding up the convergence of gradient-based stochastic optimization algorithms. The derivation of the estimators sheds some new light on the complications encountered in applying the technique of SPA. The most general cases require the simulation of additional sample subpaths; however, an approximation procedure is also introduced which eliminates the need for additional simulation. Simulation results indicate that the approximation procedure is reasonably accurate. When the service times are exponential or deterministic, the estimator simplifies and the approximation procedure becomes exact. For the M / M / 2 queue, the estimator is proved to be strongly consistent.

Abstract:We consider a single-server queue that serves a finite population of <math>n</math> customers that will enter the queue (require service) only once, also known as the <math>Δ(i)/G/1</math> queue. This paper presents a method for analyzing heavy-traffic behavior by using uniform acceleration, which simultaneously lets <math>n</math> and the service rate grow large, while the initial resource utilization approaches one. A key feature of the model is that, as time progresses, more customers have joined the queue, and fewer customers can potentially join. This diminishing population gives rise to a class of reflected stochastic processes that vanish over time and hence do not have a stationary distribution. We establish that, when the arrival times are exponentially distributed, by suitably rescaling space and time, the queue-length process converges to a Brownian motion with a negative quadratic drift, a stochastic-process limit that captures the effect of the diminishing population. When the arrival times are generally distributed, our techniques provide information on the typical queue length and the first busy period.

Abstract:Applying the technique of smoothed perturbation analysis (SPA) to theGI/G/1/K queue, we derive gradient estimators for two performance measures: the mean steady-state system time of a served customer and the probability that an arriving customer is rejected. Unbiasedness of the estimators follows from results of a previous general framework on SPA estimators. However, in that framework, the estimators often require the simulation of numerous additional sample subpaths, possibly making the technique practically infeasible in applications. We exploit some of the special structure of theGI/G/1/K queue to come up with an estimator which requires at most the simulation of a single additional sample subpath. By establishing certain regenerative properties, we provide a strong consistency proof for the estimator.

Abstract:Since Age of Information (AoI) has been proposed as a metric that quantifies the freshness of information updates in a communication system, there has been a constant effort in understanding and optimizing different statistics of the AoI process for classical queueing systems. In addition to classical queuing systems, more recently, systems with no queue or a unit capacity queue storing the latest packet have been gaining importance as storing and transmitting older packets do not reduce AoI at the receiver. Following this line of research, we study the distribution of AoI for the GI/GI/1/1 and GI/GI/1/2* systems, under non-preemptive scheduling. For any single-source-single-server queueing system, we derive, using sample path analysis, a fundamental result that characterizes the AoI violation probability, and use it to obtain closed-form expressions for D/GI/1/1, M/GI/1/1 as well as systems that use zero-wait policy. Further, when exact results are not tractable, we present a simple methodology for obtaining upper bounds for the violation probability for both GI/GI/1/1 and GI/GI/1/2* systems. An interesting feature of the proposed upper bounds is that, if the departure rate is given, they overestimate the violation probability by at most a value that decreases with the arrival rate. Thus, given the departure rate and for a fixed average service, the bounds are tighter at higher utilization.

Abstract:How to estimate performance gradient is an important issue in the study of discrete event dynamic system (DEDS). The M/G/I queueing system was considered. The non-standard perturbation algorithm based on delta-function was proposed. The strong consistency and asymptotical unbiasedness of the estimator was proved by means of integrating finite increment with infinitesimal one. The special spline functions to approximate delta-function were employed in the algorithm implementation. The sojourn time and busy period length gradient with respect to probability parameter in the system can be estimated simultaneously. The numerical simulation results have indicated that the relative error and value of unbiasedness test for gradient estimation of the system are quite lower.
