Abstract:The nonlinear mechanisms for picosecond degenerate four-wave mixing in organic dyes are reviewed and a theoretical description is given. Nonresonant and resonant electronic Kerr effects, saturable absorption and thermally induced refractive index changes are discussed. Experimental studies on a large number of samples are shown and the nonlinear mechanism for each is assessed. In both infrared absorbing dyes (BDN, A9860, S501) and several tetraphenyl porphyrins the dominating mechanism is determined to be thermal in origin. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found in most cases.

Abstract:A new series of poly(p-diethynylbenzene) derivatives with trans structure and long-conjugation side chains were synthesized. These polymers possess good solubility and thermal stability. The maximum absorptions and band gaps depend on the nature and number of the substituents. Third-order nonlinear optical properties of these polymers were characterized with second-order hyperpolarizability as large as ≈10–30 esu in the non-resonant region.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers, for example polydiacetylenes and polythiophenes, possess a relatively large nonlinear refractive index together with an ultrafast relaxation time of this nonlinearity. In the infrared wavelength regions interesting for optical communication they show enhanced response due to multi-photon resonances. By comparing optically similar, but chemically different materials qualitative structure-properties relations can be derived with a view to improving the material response. Using conventional thin film deposition techniques known from microelectronics optical waveguiding structures can be fabricated, leading to the development of polymeric all- optical switching devices.

Abstract:Degenerate four wave mixing of light at 1.055 mu m guided in poly(4,6-decadiyne-1,10 diol bis(n- butoxycarbonylmethylurethane)) planar waveguides has been observed. Diffraction efficiencies of up to 24% have been obtained, with a laser peak power of 2 W. Approximately 50% of the nonlinear mechanism can be attributed to the ultrafast molecular hyperpolarisability of the polymer.<>

Abstract:A long-term stable picosecond dissipative soliton (DS) is achieved for the first time using nonlinear polarization evolution. The environmental stabilization is performed by a Faraday mirror, which can cancel environmentally induced changes in the birefringence of the fiber. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components generates DS pulses with 2.9 nJ single pulse energy and 5.9 ps pulse width. The output power test over 2 hours shows the excellent mode-locking stability of this design.

Abstract:Optical bistability is reported at 514 nm using a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with a polydiacetylene/toluene solution or a polydiacetylene/ polyvinylchloride film. Swithch-up powers of less than 4 mW are observed. The nature of the nonlinearity is a thermally induced refractive index change. Simultaneous degenerate four-wave mixing shows corresponding bistable behaviour of the phase conjugate signal.

Abstract:A photo-cross-linked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone. The characterization of the polymer was done by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectra, ultraviolet spectra and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. The electro-optic film was obtained by spin-coating and corona poling then photo-cross-linked. The film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. An electro-optic measuring system was established based on this film. The results showed that the film has a linear electro-optic characteristic and the voltage sensitivity was higher than that of a GaAs probe.

Abstract:The ground-and the excited-state nonlinearities of two new copolymers are investigated in nanosecond scale at 1064 nm. It is found that the excited-state susceptibility is dramatically larger than the corresponding groundstate susceptibility for each sample. The experimental results also give evidence that superlattice structure of the copolymers can enhance, especially for the excited state, the molecular hyperpolarizabilities significantly. This enhancement may be attributed to the confinement effect of the pump-induced carriers.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical response of the liquid crystalline multiarm star-shaped azodendrimer was investigated in picosecond pulse and CW regimes at 532 nm. The polymer exhibited large nonlinear refractive coefficient in two regimes (n(2) = -2.88 x 10(-13) cm(2) /W and -1.1 x 10(-10) cm(2) /W under picoseconds pulse excitation, whereas n(2) = -1.4 x 10(-6) cm(2) /W and n(2) = -8.8 x 10(-5) cm(2)/W under CW laser excitation in solution and film, respectively). The mechanism accounting for the process of nonlinear refraction was discussed. Abstract:A femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr gate method, using 115 fs laser pulses at 830 nm, has been applied to investigate the third-order nonlinearity of two novel copolymers containing fluorene and tetraphenyldiaminobiphenyl units in their backbones. Ultrafast off-resonant optical Kerr responses have been observed and the magnitude of the second-order hyperpolarizability was measured as large as 10−30 esu. The origin of the extraordinary large value was explored and compared to other organic materials.

Abstract:A photo-crosslinked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The characterization of the polymer was made by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-vis, and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. An electro-optic film was obtained by spin coating of the polymer and corona poling then photo-crosslinking reaction. An external electro-optic measurement system was established based on the film and reflective light path configuration, and successfully applied to measure the electrical signals propagating on the under-test circuits. The poled and crosslinked film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. The measuring principle was analyzed by electro-optic tensor matrix and index ellipsoid methods. The results showed that the designed polymer film had the linear electro-optic effect, the voltage sensitivity of the system was measured to be 5 mv/ at the condition of 1 kHz input signal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract:By means of homogeneous stepwise condensation method, both the Ni-polyyne copolymers with PPh(3) and PBu(3) ligands, and modified pi-conjugated nickel-containing copolymers have been synthesized and confirmed by infrared (IR) analysis. The Ni-polyyne copolymers obtained are yellow powder having a (M) over bar(w), of about 1 similar to 2 x 10(4) and a molecular weight distribution (MWD) of less than 3, and they are soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl(3), and toluene. Their third-order nonlinear optical properties have been investigated by a degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique. The effect of the nature of the ligands attached to the nickel atoms, the structure, and the length of pi-conjugation between the 2 metal centers in the main chain on the hyperpolarizability gamma of the Ni-polyyne polymers have been discussed. The maximum susceptibility chi((3)) and hyperpolarizability gamma of the Ni-polyyne polymers reach 5.17 x 10(-12) and 2.30 x 10(-30) esu, respectively. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:The third-order nonlinearity of a low-bandgap conjugated organic polymer has been assessed. Degenerate four-wave mixing experiments (at 1.064 mum using picosecond pulses from a passively mode-locked neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser) on solutions of the polymer have permitted the determination of the microscopic third-order nonlinearity gamma. The polymer exhibits unusual behaviour which is solution concentration dependent. This behaviour is thought to be due to aggregation effects and strongly suggests that the bulk response of the material is large, the third-order nonlinearity being of the order of ten times greater than that of polythiophene.Following preliminary studies, a sample of the same polymer with a greater average molecular weight was also measured and was found, within an order of magnitude, to possess the same third-order nonlinearity.

Abstract:Optical waveguiding in dielectric planar ion-exchanged glass waveguides coated with nonlinear polydiacetylenes is studied. Two polydiacetylenes were used in order to measure intensity-dependent guided waves, but a nonlinear optical response can only be seen for one, namely p-3BCMU. For the TM2-mode the real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of p-3BCMU is determined to be Rex (3) = -3.10−19 m2/V2 at 1.064 μm using both shift in modenumber and nonlinear coupling.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity at a wavelength of 1.064 μm has been studied in a range of soluble conjugated organic polymers using the technique of degenerate forward four-wave mixing. This technique enables determination of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility | χ (3) | of the material. In all cases, determination of the response time of the material nonlinearity is limited by the experimental resolution (≈ 70 ps). Measurements of | χ (3) | as a function of polymer solution concentration were performed and contributions from both real and imaginary components were observed and estimated. The origin of the imaginary contribution in these ‘off-resonant’ conditions was investigated by intensity-dependent measurements of the four-wave mixing signal. In solutions of poly-3 and -4(butoxycarbonylmethylurethane diacetylene), (BCMU) in both chloroform and chlorobenzene, a dependence characteristic of a fifth-order nonlinear interaction is observed. Furthermore, in chloroform solutions of poly(3-butylthiophene) a seventh-order nonlinearity is observed. These high-order nonlinearities are associated with two-photon and three-photon resonant enhancement of the four-photon process and are characterized by fifth- and seventh-order susceptibilities, χ (5) and χ (7) respectively. The presence of imaginary contributions to the optical nonlinearity in all materials investigated implies that this nonlinearity is dominated in all cases by the nearest resonance. This conclusions renders redundant such simplistic models as the free-electron model.
